‘Tis the season when the NYS Fair has begun, a sweatshirt is required in the evening, and glue sticks are at an all time low price. Per the usual, my to-do list remains very long, despite a summer that seemed busier than ever, to get the job done. Surely I’ve sounded much like a broken record in my communications with my invites and reminders (ok, borderline nagging) to get all librarians to speak up, step up, and follow up. I, however, make no apologies and thank you for doing what you are doing and remind you that these are jobs that are never done and there are always more librarians we need to get to join our movement.

STEP UP and be a part of the NYLA-SSL Leadership team by: Contacting your regional rep (names in the back) and help out in your region to plan

events, create PR materials, attend meetings, share information, recruit members Thinking out of the box and leading on the Ways & Means committee, Exhibits

committee, SiSSLer, Vendor Liaison team, Summer Institute team, Public Relations team, Website and Social Media Teams and more! (many folks stepped up at Cornell this summer….I’ll be in touch and THANKS!)

Participating at your District level through School Improvement Teams, curriculum teams, and community engagement task forces…be the VOICE that makes connections through the library.

SPEAK UP and share how you and the library program can empower:

Parent groups (attend meetings, share resources, write a grant together) Public librarians (collaborate and succeed) Civic organizations (Rotary, YMCA, local museums, and more!) Teachers and Administrators (find the gaps and fill them) Legislators (thank them, persuade them, support them, educate them)

FOLLOW UP so all that you know gets “OUT THERE” by:

Sharing what you learned at conferences, workshops, webinars Providing your Board of Ed members with reports, articles, data, invitations, accolades Write and get published (newspapers, SiSSLer, District publications, social media,

journals) to share best practices, student voice, and the impact of libraries on teaching and learning

Shortly after press time we will usher in Sara Kelly Johns as NYLA President. She will join the dynamic national team of Gail Dickinson (AASL President), and Barbara K. Stripling (ALA President). The timing is perfect to maximize our opportunities to make an impact. Step up, speak up, and follow up—it’s our duty.

Looking forward to seeing you in Niagara Falls, Rochester, Hartford, and Syracuse and in the mean time find me via email, @spkowalski on Twitter or on our active NYLA-SSL Facebook page. Thanks for all you do to move us onward and upward. Sue Kowalski, NYLA-SSL President

Meet SSLs Library Board Members and Affiliates

Name: Pauline Herr What you do for organization: Past President (2011-2012), presently NYSCEA representative. Member since: Hmmm...15 years or so? Time flies in this profession! Current location: Retired from the Arlington School District, but have joined the Board of Trustees for the Pleasant Valley Free Library (my hometown library). Why you decided to become a library professional: When I graduated with my education degree, there were not many teaching jobs available, so I decided to get my Masters’ Degree while I had the time to give to it. I always loved reading and the library, so it seemed a good match. (Unknown to me at the time, my elementary principal had a conversation with my mother and suggested this profession for me!) Interesting Fact about being a library professional: It doesn’t grow old; it’s always changing: hour-to-hour, day-to-day, year-to-year. You meet and work with the best people and you really can make a difference. Working with kids and teachers is a blessing! (It certainly keeps you young!) k inds of libraries! I worked in special libraries, serials, legal, research, and higher education!

In my spring last column as your AASL Delegate I talked about meeting the challenge and finding yourway to attend the AASL National Conference this fall. I want to continue with this discussion andprovide you with the relevant reasons to make this journey to Hartford, CT. Yes, I said this three times to emphasize how importantthe opportunity to speak directly to vendors can be. It is not always about the free stuff! Exhibitsprovide the occasion to discuss and ask relevant questions of vendors. Ok, the free stuff is great too! My real life example - this year when I went to ALA Annual in Chicago one of my member librarieswanted me to ask Proquest about a printing issue. Proquest took the time to discuss the problemwith me and followed up after the conference to answer my question. Now this could have beenhandled over the phone but truly the opportunity to discuss what you need in your library isimportant. The value of face-to-face conversations has somuch power. It shows me that myconversation mattered and they agreed that for this a specific online product the printing featureneeds to be improved which Proquest is working on.

Legislative Committee The NYLA Legislative Committee met at the Capitol for a mini Advocacy Day on June 3rd. We met with The Division of Budget, The Assembly Ways and Means, The Chief of Staff for Speaker Sheldon Silver and with Dean Skelos, Majority Coalition Leader. Even though we were meeting primarily to thank the Legislature and Governor for the $84 million in Library Aid (even though this leaves Library Aid $16.9 million below the 102.4 million that is stipulated in Education Law) and show how it is being used and how more is needed (paving the way for asking for an increase next year) all of the libraries represented were able to talk about the legislation on our list of priorities. For SSL it allowed Danielle Yeomans and myself to emphasize the roles School Library Systems and School Librarians play in the role of education and the plight of many elementary librarians just when they are needed more then ever to achieve the skills needed in both research and digital literacy emphasized in the common core and the PARC tests that are going to be implemented. Legislation Passed Three library related bills have been signed into law by the Governor. Library/BOCES Contracts for High-Speed Internet, Creation of the Reed Memorial

Library District and Library Card Info Distributed to Students (S.2018Farley/ A.3560Nolan) This bill will require school districts to disseminate informational materials about applications for public library cards to students when such materials are provided by the public library. This item addresses the prohibition in some school districts against distributing information for any outside groups and promotes publicly funded library resources to public school students. This will help to pave the way for school librarians and public librarians to collaborate for the common good of our students. September is Library Card Month! The Digital Literacy item (S.2855 Farley) was passed in the Senate but did not reach the floor of the Assembly Other Items of Note Library Advocacy Day is Thursday, February 27, 2014. The Legislative Committee will meet on August 28th to discuss Budget and Legislative Priorities for 2014.

SLSA Rep Pursues New Opportunity as Public Library Director

Congratulations and best of luck to SSL Member April Bliss. April was the School Library System Coordinator at Jefferson-Lewis BOCES. She recently accepted a position as the public library director at Dunham Public Library in Whitesboro, New York. April was an active member of the School Library System Association and the Jefferson Lewis Library Association. She served as a liaison between SSL and SLSA and her leadership in that position was significant. Through these positions, April played a key role in connecting libraries and librarians to the resources that empowered them to do their jobs. April exemplified advocacy and lead the way for others to write, speak, and educate stakeholders about the value of libraries and certified librarians throughout the State. She plans to remain active in NYLA, the PAC, and other avenues that advocate for libraries. April shared her news and said, “I am very sorry to leave my SSL colleagues, but I know we will still work together whenever possible.” On behalf of NYLA-SSL, we thank her for her dedication and wish her well in the new position.

TASK MASTERS, OUT OF THE BOXERS needed ASAP

SSL is on the move and we need you! Due to some internal transitions with some of our board members taking on new roles, we need you to STEP UP. Each of these committees need a GO TO person (CHAIR) but don’t need to be done SOLO! The positions include but are not limited to: Ways & Means Committee Chair: work with mentor Lisa Perkowski and coordinate items we will sell to our members and friends to advocate and raise money. MUST attend spring SSL conference. If you want to HELP but not CHAIR, holler! Exhibits Chair: work with mentor Lisa Perkowski and manage shipment of the exhibits board and materials to various locations. Most helpful if you have a FED EX operation near you. Must coordinate with folks to set up exhibit if you can’t be in attendance. SiSSLer Advertising Chair: work with mentor Bea Angus to learn the ropes and maintain current partnerships and get new ones to support the SiSSLer; work with Conference planners, as well, to create mutual exchange opportunities for vendors and members Public Relations Chair: work with existing committees to curate resources that will help showcase our organization via print, online, products, and conferences We have short term (project) positions available and those that require more ongoing input. As your APPR expects collaboration and professional growth, this is a great way to meet this: “Librarian is active leader in the school community in education, technology, and research- based practices; Librarian serves in decision-making process in district, provides leadership in local School Library System (SLS), state, and national associations, and shares knowledge widely.”

Contact [email protected] for more info; if you already have - thanks!

SSL BOARD MEMBER WINS DEWEY FELLOWSHIP

Congratulations to Jill Leinung! Jill is this year’s NYLA Dewey Fellowship winner for the Section of School Librarians. Dewey Fellowships are awarded to three NYLA members, selected by designated sections to attend the NYLA Annual Conference. Dewey Fellows are chosen on a basis of the following criteria: 1) Five or more years of experience as a librarian (MLS not required); 2) record of accomplishment in library profession; 3) involvement in activities to advance the library community. Jill Leinung is a school librarian in East Greenbush Central Schools. She held previous library positions in Hudson City Schools and North Warren Schools. Jill graduated with a BS in English Education from Oneonta in 1978 and received her MLS in Public and School Library Science from the University of Albany in 1979. Having served as a legislative representative to SSL since 2007, she is also the current Region IV representative for SSL. Additionally, she is a member of YSS and a Legislative Representative to the Eastern NY Library Media Association (ENYSLMA) and has been since 2007. Jill does professional presentations and workshops titled, “Birds in Your Backyard,” “The Hudson River-Journey into Inquiry at the THV Summer Institute,” and “The Hudson River: An interactive Journey into Inquiry and the Common Core”. She has also written and received grants, including “Digging up 400 Years of History—the Archaeology of the Dutch”, which was sponsored by the Hudson Valley Federal Grant and done in collaboration with the Albany Visitor’s Center and Fort Craillo. Jill participates in professional development related to school library programs and many that show integration of local history, arts, science, and inquiry. A great deal of outreach is done to maximize services, programs, and talents of local resources, organizations, and agencies, such as the Columbia County Historical Society, where Jill is a docent, and the Kinderhook Militia (1st NY Regiment Albany county—an 18th Century Reenactment Group), of which she is a founding member. Jill initiates and maintains active collaborative partnerships with her public libraries and volunteers by providing story hours during their summer reading program and this year coordinated a summer dig to align with the NYS summer reading program. Jill will take over as President Elect (Vice President) of NYLA-SSL during the Fall 2014 conference. She will serve as part of the leadership team for the next 3 years. We are honored to have Jill represent our organization as this year’s winner. Congratulations, Jill and we know you will continue to lead by action and example.

Rosina Alaimo and Maxine Kamin Step Off Board

By Pauline Herr, Sue Kowalski, and Karen Sperrazza

For decades, our colleagues have dedicated time, energy, and passion to our profession by serving on the NYLA-SSL (formerly SLMS) Board in varying capacities. We are beyond grateful for their commitment and leadership and know their influence will impact generations to follow. We thank them for all they have done and will continue to do in their roles as mentors and guides for those who are following in their footsteps. We welcome many new folks to the team and share our appreciation with those who are stepping aside and advising those taking on their roles. As Rosina Alaimo and Maxine Kamin step off the SSL Board, their reflections on their years of service reveals the benefits of active involvement in SSL. Rosina Alaimo has been a member of NYLA/SSL for 27 years. A partial list of her leadership positions on the SSL Board includes Secretary, President for 2 years, AASL Delegate, and Membership Chair. “The ability to communicate, collaborate, and network with many excellent school librarians throughout the state has impacted my interactions with students, teachers, administrators and parents, and my professionalism. Being a member of NYLA/SSL has validated the importance of my profession.” Maxine Kamin joined NYLA/SSL in 1996. She began her service to the organi-zation serving as the SLSA representative on the SSL Board. For the last 10 years she has served as Awards Chair. “It’s with immense pleasure that I have notified librarians and administrators that they have won an award. The best part of my involvement in SSL was meeting my colleagues from all over New York.”

SLMSSENY; School Library Media Specialist of Southeastern New York Region III

SLMSSENY Nina Levine, President SLMSSENY (School Library Media Specialists of Southeastern New York) held their annual meeting, the Rip Van Winkle Brunch and Award Presentation, on May 18, 2013, at Cosimo’s in Poughkeepsie, NY. The speaker at the brunch was the 2013 Rip Van Winkle Award winner, Jennifer Donnelly, author of A Northern Light and Revolution. When the afiliate nominated Donnelly for this award, they did not know that she had written the foreword to an edition of Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle. Was this coincidence? After listening to Donnelly share her writing process, those of us fortunate enough to attend think not. Donnelly’s presentation was wonderful and all present were treated to an amazing talk and slideshow. SLMSSENY also awarded two Bea Griggs Memorial Incentive Grants, one to Collette Politzer for Chestnut Ridge Middle School, Spring Valley, NY, for her proposal involving Playaways and one to Julie Zweibel of Upper Nyack Elementary School, Upper Nyack, NY, for her podcast program. Both award winners represent Rockland County. At the brunch, we elected the SLMSSENY 2013-14 oficers: Nina Levine, President; Tara Thibault-Edmonds, President-Elect; Sheri McNair, Treasurer; and Teri Richardson, Secretary. Regional representatives include Melissa Iamonico (Southern Westchester), Melissa Heckler (Putnam/Northern Westchester), Colette Politzer (Rockland), Karen Cissel

(Orange) Gayle Pulley (Sullivan), and Linda Fonda (Ulster). Jaclyn Heaney is our Awards Chair. Terese Linton will oversee the Rip Van Winkle Award. Joy Alter is co-chairing Membership with Gayle Pulley. Nina Levine, SLMSSENY President, recognized and thanked outgoing board members, Chris Banuls (Treasurer), Susan Polos (Secretary), Tara Thibault-Edmonds (Ulster Rep.) and Terese Linton (Orange Rep.). SLMSSENY met in June to welcome the new board and initiated plans for events for the 2013-2014 school year. One priority is ensuring that the group has email and snail mail addresses for every school librarian in the region so that they are reaching everyone with newsletters, email blasts, and event liers. They are also trying to lend support to the many colleagues who were excessed in the seemingly rampant elimination of elementary positions. This year two newsletters were published and mailed to all members. The group is looking forward to hosting the 2015 SSL Conference. Nina Levine and Tara Thibault-Edmonds are Co-Chairs of the 2015 Conference. The SLMSSENY blog can be found on our website: http://www.slmsseny.org/ through the SLMSSENY Scoop link. We have updated our website and continue to promote our blog.

ENYSLMA Kali Nagler, President ENYSLMA went to the Eric Carle Museum where we saw an exhibit of Mo Willems – an extensive and humorous look at his work. We also saw an exhibit of the artwork which appears in the book – A Garden of Ordinary Miracles – An Alphabet Book by Robert Zakanich which is a lower ABC book showing the creative thought process of the author and illustrator which resulted in the inal glowing illustrations. The ENYSLMA Fall program is a Murder Mystery Tour of Historic Cherry Hill in Albany. It begins at 9:30am followed by a lunch at The Tailored Tea at 12:30 which is housed in the house where the murder was planned. Register for the event

by September 20th – see www.enyslma.org for the registration form. The Cherry Hill program will feature an exclusive presentation including primary source documents and a traveling exhibit on the Murder Mystery. Members will have the tour and the tax and gratuities paid by ENYSLMA. This should prove to be a valuable program to attend as the common core encourages museums and schools to work together to deliver curriculum. ENYSLMA’s two year membership cycle has come around and members should send in their dues – the membership form is on our webpage.

SLST East Cheryl Naslund [email protected] Slsteast.ning.com A new SLST-East website is under construction, to replace the Ning which cannot be accessed in some schools. Although it is not nearly complete, the site hopefully will help local librarians to access advocacy materials, news, calendars and contact information, while also serving to maintain the organization’s minutes and iles. Located at https//sites.google.com/site/slsteastbinghamton/, the site will continue to grow in the new school year. Annarose Foley has begun uploading data, including a directory of schools in Region VIII. SLST-East members met for the last time of the school year on May 6, at the Four County Library System, and enjoyed a potluck supper and a fabulous presentation by Starr Latronica. Starr reviewed

hundreds of new books for children and teens, and shared her review copies and galleys with the members. The meeting, as it always does, drew the largest attendance of the year. Although elections were to be held at the meeting on May 6, there was no slate on which to vote, and members did not feel that they could hold an election without the input of the members who were not in attendance. A nominating committee was formed, and elections will be held at the irst meeting of the 2013/14 school year. The SLST By-laws were posted to the Google Drive, and members were encouraged to review the document and to suggest changes. The By-laws will be updated at the irst meeting of the school year.

Section of School Librarians Board Briefs Ithaca, NY August 2013

The SSL Board met on the Saturday and Sunday before the Leadership Institute at Cornell University. Since, as Sue Kowalski eloquently pointed out,

“…we must continue to advocate for the impact that strong school libraries and librarians have on the teaching and learning that happens in the communities. We must ensure that our organization is well respected for its strong membership, efficient information outlet, and professional learning opportunities”,

she led the Board in a Strategic Planning exercise, similar to the one that she participated in at ALA in Chicago, focusing on these three crucial areas. These areas were based on ongoing conversations with members and SSL Leadership about ways to improve productivity and efficiency of the organization. After breakout sessions on Saturday, several actions were suggested that could positively impact membership, communication and professional learning, and plans to implement them were proposed. As always, members are invited and encouraged to share their time and talents to help with these efforts. Sue

Kowalski will be leading the charge to implement the shifts and continue the solid work the organization has always done. She will be seeking leadership and input from current board members and others who are interested in short term and long term projects and planning. Members are encouraged to step up in the spirit of leadership and advocacy for the profession, the organization, and personal development. Revisions to the Policy Book continue, and this review and the resulting updates should help with the plans that were suggested as a result of the Strategic Planning exercise. Our strategic planning session determined that many of our gaps in service and efficiency would be streamlined by updating information and having it readily accessible to all members. Also, as the re-affiliation process continues, the organization will have better information about its affiliates, which will improve communication and membership issues. Librarians will be happy to know that, as a result of years of hard work by library advocates, recent changes to a section of the Education Law now allow school librarians to offer instruction in grades k-12 on “digital literacy", as opposed to the dated

and limited term “internet safety”. To continue these efforts, librarians and library supporters are encouraged to participate in Legislative Lobby Day, May 4th and 5th, 2014, and NYS Library Legislative Advocacy Day, February 27. Librarians are encouraged to visit the EngageNY website, where many changes are taking place which can help with implementation of the Common Core Curriculum. Also, the AASL site lists many awards and grants that can help librarians develop their library programs. Exciting plans are coming together for the Spring SSL Conference, “Expect MORE”, which will take place on April 24 to the 26 in Syracuse. Links to the online registration and more information can be found at http://cnysl.weebly.com/2014-ssl-conference.html

Much of our meeting focused on the concept of ADVOCACY through LEADERSHIP within school buildings, districts, communities, regions, NYS, and

the entire country. This can and must happen via becoming an instructional leader, reaching out to current and potential partners within and beyond the school community, becoming engaged in the many avenues of leadership available to members in formal and informal capacities. The next Board meeting will take place at NYLA in September, followed by meetings on February 8 and 9, and also at the Spring meeting on April 24 at ONCenter in Syracuse. Specific details on times and locations will follow as we firm up the process that will best meet the needs of those attending and support cost efficiency. Members will continue to hear and see evidence of our ongoing commitment to making connections that matter. In the mean time, all are encouraged to contact Sue Kowalski at [email protected], via our NYLA-SSL Facebook page or at twitter @spkowalski. Be part of the transformation! Join us!
