WHAT IS WISDOM?Recently certain incidents have striked me a lot. In media I saw a learned professor
taking his aged mother, forcing her to walk through the steps and pushing her from the
upstairs thus resulting in the death of the mother. Yet another of a mother who was
deserted by the children was taken care by some charity workers and on calling the
children regarding her death didn’t even care to attend and do the last funeral rites.
Recently in Attapady, the killing of Madhu has raised questions regarding the moral
values of the people. He was beaten to death because of stealing food as he was hungry.
That too the incident was being recorded in the mobile and being celebrated. What is
important in all the above incidents are that the people involved are educated. What is
education? Is education merely having an academic qualification. Education becomes
meaningful if it is only related with God.
When we view the book of Proverbs, it always insists on wisdom. What is Wisdom? Let
us look into Proverbs 1:20-33.
1) Wisdom’s invitation is public
It’s a public invitation. Its not secret. In the instance of Noah we see the invitation
was clearly made but people didn’t believe. Today also we witness many incidents
where wisdom is crying aloud. I remember a person in my parish life who was
addicted to alcohol. After lots of advice to move away, he refused it. But he
contracted cancer in his throat and had to suffer a lot. He was struggling to drink a
glass of water. Wisdom is around you but many-a-times we don’t embrace it.
2) Wisdom’s invitation is urgent
It is stated that wisdom is crying aloud. It’s with a sense of urgency. God is calling
Adam-“Where are you?”. This is the voice of a broken-hearted God. When we sin
God is calling us to turn away from sin. The incident of the Great Titanic shows that
the captain was given the signal of a huge iceberg amidst the route but didn’t heed
to it and thus resulted in the greatest disaster.
3) Wisdom’s invitation is patient
In Verse 22 there are three sorts of people mentioned:- simple, mockers and fools.
Simple people are those who are open to everything and easily led away. Mockers
From the Vicar

are those who laugh at holy things. He ridicules the word of God. Fools are those
who hate knowledge. In this new generation we view many people easily being
led away, ridiculing the Word ,the very faith life and hating knowledge.
4) To attain wisdom, Repent
Repent means to change our mind. Wisdom is Jesus Christ Himself. Accpet Him as
the Lord of your life. It is revealed through God’s Word. How great is Jesus’
wisdom? He was questioned by many people regarding many issues. The listeners
were bewildered at his answers.
Conclusion:
Now our children are about to enter a new academic session. “The fear of the Lord
is the beginning of Wisdom”.(Prov1:7). Our Lord has shown us the way in which He
grew. He was in the temple asking questions to the elders as well as responding to
it. During his teenage he could have spent time in other activities but he spent time
in the Father’s house. Do not be ignorant about the Word. Read the word and study
it. Be regular worshippers and respect your parents, teachers and elders.
As we have traversed one more financial year, I take this opportunity to thank all the
office-bearers and committee members for their sincere hard work in every activity
of the parish. I also thank my brother Subin achen and his family for their whole-
hearted work. Thanks to all the members who have supported, prayed and
responded to the needs of the church. Lets work together again for His glory. Do not
forget the formula- Wisdom=God + knowledge
Yours in His Service

The mission fields in the state of Odisha are a clear manifestation and echo the thoughts
of James, the disciple of Jesus Christ- “A man is justified by works, and not by faith alone
(James 2:24). An enriching experience, the Odisha Mission Tour was undertaken from
23rd to 27th January. Under the leadership of our vicar, Rev. Roby Jacob Mathew and
convener Mr. M.M. Thomas, 19 members from our parish, participated in the tour.
Our first visit was to the oldest mission field in the state- The Odisha Mission at Khariar
Road, a town in the Nuapada district. Supervised by Rev. Ronald Raju and Rev. Vijish
George, the mission runs eight Balwadis and a school in which 288 students are
enrolled. There are four hostels for boys and girls which provide accommodation to 118
students. The students welcomed us with a handmade bouquet and by singing their
traditional welcome song in Odiya. Our next two field visits were to, two villages-
Maharani Marypur and Silda - where community work and Gospel preaching are
undertaken by evangelists, working under this mission. The next morning, we left for
Komakhan, a village in Chhatisgarh to visit Gurukul Vidya Peeth, followed by a visit to
Christian Fellowship Hospital, Nav Jyoti Vidyalaya run by Dr. Mathew.
On the evening of 24th January, we left for our next mission field- The Kalahandi
Mission- which is under the guardianship of Rev. Dr. Jacob George and Rev. Shibu
Thomas Skaraiah. Established in 2000, there are Balawadis, a Mission Gramjyoti School,
Mar Thoma English Medium School, two hostels comprising of 43 students and a health
care center functioning under this mission. The Mission caters to 18 villages in

Kalahandi, one of the poorest districts in India, with 55% forest land. The gravity of the
situation was understood when we visited Matakupa village, set in the interiors of
Daringbadi Hills and Benaguda Forest. The tribal community residing in the village are
still bearing the brunt of the caste system. The women folk have inked their faces, to
make themselves unappealing and thereby evade the eyes of the upper caste sexual
predators. To top that, they have no access to communication and medical facilities and
the region is prone to malaria and contagious diseases. The nearest hospital is at a
distance of 60-80 km. There is a government Balawadi working in a deplorable
condition and the schools located in the nearest town have a physical structure but
simply lack one thing: teachers. The work of Kalahandi Mission is commendable against
this hostile backdrop. The villagers sustain themselves by farming and selling plates
made of coconut leaves. Amidst all the hiccups, the villagers gave us a grand welcome,
greeting us with songs in Kui, an oral language, with no script, and a worship session.
They even provided us with lunch; the lunch being special because all the items were
their own grown produce.
From Matakupa, we left for Kalinga Mission, where our first visit was to village
Rajupathar Mandali. After having refreshment, we had a glorious worship session with
the villagers. The villagers sang, danced and gave glory to God. Thereafter, Rev. Sherin
Mathews, the director of the Kalinga Mission gave us a brief information about how the
Mission was established in 2010, at a time when the state of Odisha was still bearing
the brunt of violence against Christians. By 5 PM, we left for Bissamcuttack, in Raygada
district. The next morning, we celebrated Republic Day and later the students put up a
programme, consisting of songs, dances, and musical play. After fruitful completion of
the Mission Tour, we proceeded back to Delhi via Vishakapatnam.

“THERE IS NO COMFORT GREATER THAN THE ARMS OF JESUS.” THE BIBLE
Church Herald
Recently India awoke to a heinous crime in God’s own country that shook our collective
conscience. Madhu was a 27 year old individual. His only crime was that he stole some
rice and looked the part of a homeless person. For this he was mercilessly beaten by a
mob and killed. Youngsters, the future of our nation, did what they know best. They
clicked selfies with his body and posted videos of his gruesome beating.
Rohith Vemula was a PHD student at the University of Hyderabad. His only crime was
that he was a dalit who dared to dream and attain an education. Our society collectively
failed him the day he committed suicide due to the discrimination that he faced every
single moment of his life.
Mohammed Ikhlaq was a 52 year old family man with two sons. One of them was
serving the nation in the Indian Air Force. On 28 September 2015 he and his son were
dragged out of his house and beaten. He was brutally killed in front of his wife and
children. His only crime was a suspicion that he was eating beef which was later found
out that he wasn’t.
As a society we are responsible for each and everyone of these incidents and National
Crime Records Bureau data shows us that these aren’t just a few exceptions. Incidents of
communal violence, violence against women are increasing by the day.
They are a result of an education system bereft of morals and value based education. As
a result we are churning out engineers, doctors, graduates by the millions but they can’t
be called educated.
In a nutshell an educated person is one who can choose between wisdom over
foolishness, good over bad, virtue over vulgarities, empathize with the plight of another
, then they are educated regardless of the academic degrees that they have .
Drawing an analogy from the famous movie 3 idiots.
“A lion performing stunts in a circus will be called well trained and not well educated”.
Let us look at this issue in more detail.
Educated barbarians
An education without moral values as we can see from the above examples essentially
creates a menace for the society. Today we can see that our universities are creating
Are we educated or literate?

highly skilled barbarians who wish to succeed regardless of how they do so. In fact we
should fear these individuals more as they have the potential to unleash greater harm.
An uneducated thief may steal Rs. 13Lakhs from an ATM by breaking in but a skilled
barbarian would be able to y out with Rs. 13000 crores and still lead a comfortable life
of luxury as Mr. Nirav Modi very clearly shows.
Intellectual education inuences our head whereas value based education inuences
the heart. If we want to build character in our offices, homes and society we must
achieve a minimum level of moral and ethical literacy.
Education that builds fundamental traits of character such as honesty, compassion,
courage, persistence, empathy and responsibility is absolutely essential.
Empathy deficit
Empathy is the ability to share another person’s feelings and emotions as if they were
our own. When we broaden the ambit of our concern and empathize with the plight of
others less fortunate than ourselves it becomes hard not to act. We need to understand
that to a great extent the comfortable lives that we lead are by virtue of our being born in
good families, prosperous communities with the right opportunities. Hence it Is our
responsibility to help those that weren’t so lucky.
Our education can only be meaningful when we empathize with the sufferings of the
millions who are not able to raise their voice as they are too busy trying to find a square
meal a day. Being part of middle class the responsibility falls on us to raise their
concerns.
“Jesus became what we are in order that we might become what he is.”
The very fact that God himself was born as a son of man was because God completely
empathized with human experience and in consequence suffered for our sins.
Way forward
In our fast paced world today social isolation is widespread and social interactions are
now maintained through technology.
We need to develop social consciousness in our youngsters .India with its 600 million
young people is supposed to be the powerhouse of the world if it manages this
demographic dividend. Without moral education this might just end up being a
demographic disaster.
The highest result of education is tolerance. An educated individual will end up breaking
the shackles of superstition, caste violence and antiquated customs that are keeping us
back hence ensuring that our country emerges more stronger and prosperous.
Let us all strive to be educated in the true sense of the word and not be ill-educated and
hence leave this world a better place than we found it.
