Dear Members,

It has been a busy summer. The Chamber has made a number of changes and decisions, and I’m going to take this opportunity to fillyou in and then wrap up at the end with a call to arms.

We launched our second new website in less than two years. The previous website, launched in April of 2016, was cutting edge and had a whole world of functionality. It also was confusing, not desktop friendly (it assumed that 90% of people would be utilizing thewebsite on their phone), and required a lot of effort for simple functions.

So we listened, and we responded, and we launched a completely new website this summer built around direct feedback from you. It is still “cutting edge” in a lot of ways, but its functionality has been streamlined. We removed the extraneous bells and whistles. It is now desktop computer friendly. And the feedback has been extremely positive!

We re-organized our Membership Committee. The new result is the Outreach Committee, whose new charter is to encourage all members to increase their level of activity and participation. They will be sending cards, making phone calls, and dropping by to say hi.They will be issuing invites and listening to complaints and praise.

We also made the decision to cancel our Gateway to Local Government Luncheon. 75% of that decision was based on an inability forus to secure a speaker for the event that met our standards of quality and value. The other factor is the event just doesn’t seem to exciteour membership, in spite of its past success. The bulk of the participants were not members, and the sponsorships we had were oftensponsoring to support the Chamber, not necessarily the event itself.

All three of these things are a direct response to a new managing philosophy in your Chamber of Commerce. Do you know why wehad a Membership Committee? Because “Chambers of Commerce have Membership Committees.” Do you know why that first newwebsite was so “cutting edge” and complicated? Because “Entrepreneurs demand the height of innovation.” Do you know why we helda Gateway luncheon, and even have a Government Affairs Committee behind it? Because “Chambers of Commerce have GovernmentAffairs committees and events.”

Moving forward we are going to try our best to base our plans and decisions on what our specific membership wants and needs. Who cares what every other Chamber of Commerce in America does? We care about what YOU need. And I know that will be apparent as The Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce continues to grow and expand and improve into the future.

Which brings me to my call to arms. The September Breakfast Connection is also the Annual Meeting of the Membership. It is a requirement of our By-Laws that we hold one, and that a certain percentage of our membership is in attendance (we need 47 businesses represented). You need to be there. You need to be there not because of our By-Laws, but because this is YOUR Chamber, and it is important that you are seen, heard, and informed. It is important that you take ownership in our process and our community. That is what makes our Chamber great. Please mark your calendar for September 14th, at 7:00 a.m. I look forward to seeing you there.

Your President,Jacob Millwee

The red carpet rolls out on the evening of September29 when the Chamber presents Night at the Oscars atthe Heights Theater which has been a fixture on 19thstreet since it opened in 1929. Oscars represent one ofthe highest honors for actors and actresses. Althoughthe official name originally was the Academy Award of Merit, it changed in 1939 when it became known as the Oscars. Oscar, who? The exact nickname’s origins are unclear. The most widely known story goesthat Academy librarian Margaret Herrick, who had thegig in the 1930s, saw the statue and said it looked likeher Uncle Oscar. Voila, the Oscars!

What could be more appropriate than a vintage theater and a Heights historic landmark as the site for musical entertainment, a wine pull, live and silentauctions, our achievement awards presentations, newboard member recognition and much more?

Wow, what a nice array of impressive live auctionitems provided by member teams of the ChamberBoard of Directors to date:

Gold Patron prof i le

The Chamber welcomes The Flying Locksmiths of Houston as a new Gold Patron member. Unusual name? Yes, because the business was founded by William McMenimon Sr., who was a pilot and a locksmith! The business has been flying since its founding in 1946. This successful business routinelydoes commercial locksmith work for high-profile businesses such as JP Morgan Chase, Starbucks, Brookdale Senior Living,Marriot, and others.

Today, Richard Gomelsky runs his business from a Houston office. There are also sister locations serving the Woodlands,Katy, and Sugarland, as well as 70 local offices in most major markets across the U.S.. If you are wondering what this business does, think of them for their ability to offer cutting edge commercial locksmith services that range from simple re-keys and commercial grade mechanical locks, all the way to high security locks, as well as electronic card and bio-metric access control systems. A wide variety of other products and services are also available, such as expert commercial safe repairs, door and hinge repairs, and are easily reviewed by going to www.flyinglocksmiths.com/houston-tx.

Their mission statement, according to Richard is simple: “We provide new age security solutions backed by three generations of family values, with a focus on customer servicethat is second to none.”

The Richmond Avenue office has five employees and all take pride in their expert workmanship, warranty and offers attractive discounts to fellow Chamber partners. Exhibiting an impressive personal business philosophy, Richard says: “We understand that being able to provide safe and securehomes and commercial facilities is our customer’s top responsibility to their loved ones, employees, and customers.”Backing up his philosophy is the fact that each of their technicians are licensed, insured, and dedicated to giving high-quality customer service. The Chamber welcomes the Flying Locksmiths organization, looks forward to their support, and appreciates their staunch adherence to exemplary business performance.

Familiar Faces

With credit toJourney’s song,Don’t Stop Believing, thismonth’s familiarface and “SmallTown Girl,” Dee Farino was

just that, as she grew up in Elgin, Texas(for the uninitiated, it is pronounced likethe word “begin)!” Just a few miles fromAustin, she attended all three localschools and remembered cruising up anddown the main drag, or getting “gussiedup” for the local SPJST Lodge dance.

College beckoned and Dee made thejourney to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos (now known as Texas State University) and majored in journalism. Joining the workforce saw her working in an Austin women’sapparel shop. Feeling the desire to max

her major, Dee next worked with different publishing companies, first as agraphic artist and then editor of anotherAustin real estate publication. Today sheis president of Third Coast Impressionsand serves her clients with expert print-ing knowledge and dedicated service.

Looking for better opportunities andgreener pastures, she migrated to Houston and began her career in whatwas to become a specialization in design, print and mailing services. She says“Houston provided me with countlessopportunities that would have beenmore difficult to achieve in Austin.”

A Chamber member for 12 years, Deefelt the Chamber was a good fit for herand did provide a wide array of network-ing opportunities. Dee has held Chamberpositions on the Board of Directors andthe Executive Committee. In fact, she is

the Chair Elect and will assume thoseduties beginning in October of this year.Although not a gem partner, she describes herself as a “sparkle” partner, and the title is very apropos based on her dedication to the Chamber.

So, what does an “uptown girl” now, liketo do? How about reading, sketching, traveling and interacting with people tofind out more about their lives, loves anddreams. Known to her family as Honey,Dee has been married for 13 years andhas a “beautiful smart” daughter and a“handsome” teenage son. Whole-heartedChamber advocates, of which Dee issurely one, enhance the entire organiza-tion and never fail to exhibit a “sparkling”desire to see the Chamber grow andprosper. Thank you Dee Farino for beingthe consummate volunteer who alwaysraises her hand!
