A PUBL ICAT ION OF THE

    Journey to Growth 3

  • With one year of Journey to Growth (J2G) almost complete, VP of Marketing Heather Holmes reflects on how much has happened.

Last year at this time, I was about three weeks into the job and just familiarizing myself with the plan and the board of directors, says Holmes. Its crazy how much weve accomplished in twelve months.

J2G is a five-year economic initiative aimed at diversifying the regional economy commonly referred to as southeast Minnesota. J2G focuses on food processing, computer systems and design, manufacturing, medical technology, and convention and tourism.

The 44-page plan started nearly three years ago during a discussion between then Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce President John Wade and President of Rochester Area Economic Development, Inc. (RAEDI), Gary Smith.

We were both very involved with Destination Medical Center (DMC) and started discussing the possible down side of a 20 year plan for intentional growth in the healthcare field without a contingency, J2G Board Chair Wade explained. We are already 40% dependent on one industry and both sides realized a complementary plan to strengthen our other industry sectors would be beneficial to the entire region.

To ensure industry sectors will be supported, a steering committee of over 55 people representing both the public and private sectors throughout the region was formed. A national search for firms specializing in regional economic development was also conducted.

When we received Market Streets proposal, it was unanimous. Its credentials were top notch, Smith described. They had worked with over 130 communities throughout 34 states with successful outcomes.

Market Street started in April of 2013, conducting community analysis, data gathering, interviewing regional stakeholders and creating the actual plan. Originally, the plan outlined a strategy for economic diversification for the three county Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), however the footprint has grown.

Currently, J2G covers communities within a 10 county area, but its not border bound, Holmes acknowledged. This can be difficult for some people to grasp because we are so accustomed to borders. It really has to do with how business is conducted and commuting patterns, how people live, work and play. J2G is not confined or defined by county lines.

Throughout December of 2014, the J2G Board of Directors settled on a 10 committee structure, each headed by two co-chairs. The committees charge is to execute the plan, which includes 11 goals with more than 40 strategies. To date, J2G has 130 volunteers from throughout southeast Minnesota and continues to welcome anyone interested.

Journey to Growth is volunteer driven and its volunteer led. To be honest, we need more regional representation at the table. J2G is about changing our conversations and thinking as a connected and cohesive region, then acting as one. This will make us much more competitive in the global marketplace, Smith described.

In addition to volunteers, J2G relies on the support of its implementation partners, including: Community Economic Development Associates (CEDA), the Winona and Red Wing Port Authorities, Albert Lea Economic Development Agency, Austin Community Development Associates (Austin CDA), the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, and the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to RAEDI, the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce provides assistance in the areas of workforce, talent, governing, and diversity and inclusion. Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce President Rob Miller stresses the importance of supporting this initiative.

J2G overlaps with a number of the Chambers pillars and it just makes sense that as partners we work together to ensure we are moving forward without duplication. We all want to see the success of our neighbors. At the end of the day, thats what were doing...looking out for each others best interests as a region, Miller remarked.

2016 promises to be both an exciting and challenging year for the J2G team. With a year under their belt, the J2G committees are now creating the framework for projects and specific initiatives, some of which come with a cost. J2G is a 501c3, with an estimated price tag of $1.2 million to support the work for the next five years.

We have raised the funds needed to date and are thankful for those businesses and communities who have stepped forward. We will need more to do the same in the next year if we are to obtain the resources needed to carry the plan forward, Smith pointed out.

In addition to the imminent committee requests for funds, J2G is looking at branding the southeast Minnesota region. Think Silicon Valley, Technology Square, Napa Valley or closer to home: The Iron Range and Twin Cities. A national search for a firm specializing in regional branding will be conducted and a regional branding task force will be created.

To me, this is the opportunity to create a legacy, Holmes said. It will be a heavy lift and not a cheap one. But imagine a hundred years from now when this region will be identified by something we helped to create. That is a very powerful thing.

As first time business owners, it has been quite the process learning whats most important

about operating and expanding our business. We learned at a vending convention that joining the Chamber of Commerce was a GOOD WAY TO EXPAND YOUR NETWORK AND RESOURCES. So we joined, and it has proven to be EXCELLENT ADVICE. Since then, weve attended several events and met a ton of new people. The Chamber has expanded our network in ways not possible had we not joined, and the amount of BUSINESS LEADS that weve gained has been incredible! Weve got things happening in our business right now that came solely from the Chamber. Now, whenever were in need of a service of some type, before we do anything, we check to see if anyone in the Chamber offers what were looking for. The Chamber offers a WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES to anyone whos willing to go get it, and thats what we like so much about it. One thing is for sure, OUR BUSINESS IS BETTER SINCE WE JOINED.

Being a member of the Chamber has provided me with an AWESOME NETWORK of motivated business owners, OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE BACK to the entrepreneurial community, and has served as a launchpad for Strut Brandings SUCCESS in this wonderful community. I am PROUD TO BE A MEMBER of the Chamber, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND membership to all emerging & established businesses who want to prosper in the Rochester area.

The Rochester Chamber of Commerce is not only the largest Chamber in the state, but I believe the MOST DYNAMIC. Ive been a Chamber member since taking over Minuteman Press about 5 1/2 years ago. I enjoy the NETWORKING with other business professionals and owners like myself, and truly believe there is a positive dynamic in SUPPORTING AND LEARNING from each other. We all face competitive forces, not just locally, but nationally and globally. By working together as a Chamber team, we can adopt best practices and continue to make Rochester a DESIRABLE PLACE TO OPERATE A BUSINESS. Additionally, I believe that the CHAMBER STAFF IS COMMITTED to this same vision and utilizes continuous improvement.

Founded in 1954, the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota (EFMN) is a non-profit organization that offers programs and services to educate, connect and empower people affected by seizures. EFMN also leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure, and overcome the challenges created by epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes people to have recurrent seizures, or brief disruptions of electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy affects more Americans than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinsons disease combined. It is the most common neurological condition in children, and the fourth most common in adults behind stroke and Alzheimers disease.

EFMN has been leading the effort to help people rise above seizures for over 60 years. Last year, EFMN served over 150,000 people. People with seizures need access to resources, connections with others and opportunities to learn more about epilepsy. EFMN envisions a world where people with epilepsy realize their full potential.

Mayo Clinic is one of only 200 Level 3 or 4 epilepsy centers in the country. The Rochester area is brimming with bright medical minds as well as people living with seizures. EFMN is here to educate, connect and empower people in the region.

Imagine having a seizure on the school bus during the first day of school or during a job interview. One in ten people will have a seizure in their lifetime, and one in 26 will develop epilepsy. Its important for people to know how to respond. EFMN offers FREE training for school bus drivers, teachers, coaches and workplaces in Rochester and surrounding areas.

DOWNLOAD THE APP! Help is as close as your phone in EFMNs new Seizure First Aide app, available at efmn.org/app, on Google

Play, and the App Store. This app provides step-by-step first aid during a seizure, a timer function and videos of different seizure types. Its another way EFMN is helping support the 60,000 people in our community with epilepsy.

Contact Lisa Winkowski, EFMN of Rochesters dedicated staff person who helps people rise above seizures in the region, at [email protected] or 507-287-2103 if your business would like FREE TRAINING to learn how to respond to a seizure.

People in Rochester can also attend educational workshops, support groups, fun events for families and EFMNs annual Rise Above Seizures Walk.

WITH PAUL R. LANDRY, SALES MANAGER, COUNTRY INN AND SUITES ROCHESTER SOUTH, MNWhat made you want to join the ambassador program? I have always attended most Chamber events, and after talking with Chamber Ambassadors like Wes Duellman and former Chamber Ambassador Neal Engleman, I figured that I should apply and get benefits of helping the Chamber while promoting the Country Inn and Suites Rochester South, MN. There are some great people helping as Chamber Ambassadors. I guarantee you will make some very memorable great friends as a result of being a Chamber Ambassador.

What has been the most positive experience in your ambassadorship? I love meeting

new businesses and folks in the community. I have made many great, deep, and meaningful friendships with fellow Chamber Ambassadors. I would count these Chamber Ambassadors as my best friends in Rochester. Helping at the Annual Chamber Golf Outing is also a blast.

How has being an ambassador provided you with personal growth? Being a Chamber Ambassador has really drawn out my

personality and networking ability. Now when I go to an event, I have no problem interacting with any attendee and making great friendships. I am much more confident and also known around town. One also has to be pretty organized to keep up with the events to attend.

How do you offer assistance to Chamber members? To be a successful Chamber Ambassador one just really needs to show up at events and help out. One can volunteer to help at events as much or little as their jobs allow. Foremost is to present yourself and the Chamber positively, interact with Chamber members and thank them for being Chamber members. We also attend ribbon cuttings and events. If I do not have an answer to a Chamber members question, I direct them to the appropriate Chamber staff that can help them.

What goals do you have for the ambassadors? The Chamber is very good at asking for input and I am not shy to share any ideas that could improve the Chamber Ambassador program or Chamber members experience. I am ecstatic that I joined the Chamber Ambassador program and was given the opportunity to share my gifts, talents and abilities as a Chamber Ambassador.

A WORD OF ADVICE:ENSURE YOUR DATA IS UP TO DATE. Employee DataEmployers should have a Federal Form W-4 Employees Withholding Allowance Certificate on file for each employee, along with any applicable state and local withholding tax forms. Remind employees to submit amended W-4 forms if filing status, exemption allowances, or exempt status has changed since the last filing of their Form W-4.

GAIN EMPLOYEE CONSENT FOR W-2 ELECTRONIC DELIVERY. If your business has the ability to deliver form W-2 electronically through your payroll provider, remind your employees that they must consent to electronic delivery. If consent is not given by the employee, a paper W-2 is required to be delivered.

UPDATE YOUR STATE UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE (SUI) TAX RATE ANDFEDERAL/STATE FILING FREQUENCIES. Each calendar year, your business is assigned a unique, state-specific SUI tax rate and federal and state withholding filing frequencies based on your employment history. Submit updated rates and frequencies to your accountant or payroll service provider to avoid potential tax penalties.

SUBMIT PAYROLL ADJUSTMENTS AND COMPLETE BONUS/SUPPLEMENTAL PAYROLLS. Submit any payroll adjustments for employees, such as voided or manually issued employee checks, and any holiday or year-end bonuses to your payroll service provider before your year-end payroll report.

PREPARE AND REPORT ALL MISSING WAGES OR FRINGE BENEFITS. Employers are required to report items such as fringe benefits, tips, COBRA payments, employee moving expenses and others to your payroll service provider before the companys year-end payroll report.

IMPORTANT YEAR END DATES:February 1, 2016: Distribute Form W-2 to employees. Complete and file Form 940 and Form 941.

February 29, 2016: Complete and file Forms W-2/W-3 due to Social Security Administration if filling by paper.

March 31, 2016: Complete and file Forms W-2 due to Social Security Administrative if filling electronically.

The Chamber is open for business! On November 19th, we officially cut the ribbon and opened our newly renovated Chamber offices. My heartfelt thanks go out to HGA Architects and Engineers and Schwab LLC for designing and delivering a beautiful new space for the Chamber. Both persevered through all the complications that come from working with a 40-plus

year old building and from being good neighbors and accommodating needed upgrades to the buildings structure.

I am also very appreciative of the investment that Jaguar Communications made in the Chambers membership. The Jaguar Communications Video Conference Center provides members with access to a state-of-the-art facility that seats up to 40 people and includes a 70 interactive touch screen display and connection to Jaguars lightning fast, fiber-optic network. This conference center is available to Chamber members for their use. Contact our office for more information.

I want to thank all of the members who supported our Annual Member Celebration this year. As most of you know, even though this popular event sold out last year, we decided to cut ticket prices in half to make this event more accessible to our smaller business members. We shoe-horned as many of you as we could into the Rochester International Event Center, so you could gather to network and celebrate with this years award winners. The 2016 celebration will also be cozy, but were

looking forward to the completion of the Mayo Civic Center so we can stretch our legs in 2017!

Finally, thanks to all of you, our members. Were closing out 2015 on a high note. In October, we broke through the 1,500 member mark and were continuing to grow. Weve added new programming to promote the diversity of our business community and to give our smaller businesses new opportunities to learn and grow. In 2016, we will continue to focus on our small business members and we will continue to support the non-profit organizations in our community. These organizations are among the largest employers in the area and provide strength and compassion to our economy.

The Chamber staff wishes you all a happy holiday season and a prosperous 2016.

COMMUNITY MATTERS:JOHN KIRCHNER DISCUSSES FEDERAL ISSUESOn Friday, November 6th members of the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce gathered at Canadian Honker Events at Kahler Apache to hear from the U.S. Chamber of Commerces John Kirchner about the wide variety of federal issues that impact our area and their businesses.

Kirchner began the program by evaluating the United States economic outlook. While unemployment in the United States is currently low, our labor force participation rate is the lowest it has been since 1976. This is partly because there are 5% of people that are able to work, but are not working or looking for employment which means both our labor force and the economy still have a lot of room for growth.

After discussing the economy, Kirchner spoke about another big issue that is facing our businesses, state and communities; transportation. There is a significant need for a well funded, long term, transportation bill. At least 28% of Minnesotas transportation funds come from the federal government and when they do not fulfill their end of the bargain, we end up with budget shortfalls and failing infrastructure.

Kirchner also noted the U.S. Chambers support of an increase in the federal gas tax as a dedicated funding source that will primarily impact those that use the roads. The federal gas tax has not been increased since 1990 and according to the U.S. Chamber, it is time to tap this resource again to fund our transportation infrastructure needs.

To close out the event, Kirchner discussed the current issues concerning the power of federal regulatory agencies. Currently, there are three big issues that are outside of the hands of elected officials and in the hands of federal regulators: Joint Employer Standards, Waters of the United States and the Fiduciary Rule. Each of these issues could impact businesses and property owners greatly. Passing the rule-making process to the regulators makes it harder for individuals to impact change on final details of these rules.
