BING CROSBY SWINGING ON A STAR PRESENTED BY BRUCE HAMBROMonday, December 17th, 2pm, $3/personBing Crosby was America’s early and mid-20th century beloved crooner as well as its first multi- media star. Crosby’s revolutionary relaxed and mellow singing style entranced millions of listeners worldwide, and inspired numerous other singers such as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Dean Martin to follow in his giant footsteps. Bing topped the record charts with more than forty #1 hit recordings. Eventually, Crosby had the distinction of becoming the “most recorded voice in the world”. Bing Crosby—Swinging on a Star is an informative program that reviews the highlights of the historic career of “Der Bingle” including his starring roles in two of film history’s greatest musicals-- White Christmas and High Society. Among many classic Crosby tunes heard in this presentation are Road to Morocco, White Christmas, Swinging on a Star, I’ll Be Seeing You and True Love. Sign up at the Center!

MONEY SMART FOR OLDER ADULTS PRESENTATIONTuesday, December 18th, 12pm, Boxed lunch will be served. Financial exploitation has been called “the crime of the 21st cen-tury” with one study suggesting that older Americans lost at least $2.9 billion to financial exploitation in 2010 by a broad spectrum of perpetrators, including persons they know and trust, as well as strangers. Cognitive impairment diminishes the ability of some older adults to make financial decisions and to detect frauds and scams. Elder financial exploitation can result in the loss of the ability to live independently. It can also result in a decline in health, broken trust, and fractured families. Awareness is the first step. Planning ahead for financial wellbeing and the possibility of diminished financial ca-pacity is critical. Reporting & early intervention are vital to preventing loss & recovering loss when possible. Money Smart for Older Adults is designed to provide you with information and tips to help prevent common frauds, scams and other types of elder financial exploita-tion in your community. Please share this information with others.Sign up at the Center! Sponsored by StonehamBank.

ASK THE NURSE The holidays are fast approaching and I find myself feeling sad. I want to enjoy the holidays and not feel so depressed. What can I do?
Dear Reader, you are not alone. The holiday season often brings unwelcome guests. It can be a financial burden, feelings of being overwhelmed, stressed and depression to name a few.
The holidays don’t have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. If someone close to you has recently passed away or you can’t be with loved ones, realize that it is normal to feel sadness and grief.
Reaching out can help that lonely feeling. Look for community, religious or other social events. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships. Stick to a budget. Before you go gift and food shopping decide how much money you can afford to spend. Then stick to your budget. Don’t try to buy happiness with an avalanche of gifts.
Remember don’t abandon healthy habits. Don’t let the holidays become a free- for- all. Overindulgence only adds to your stress and guilt. Take a breather. Make some time for yourself such as an exercise class, taking a walk, listening to soothing music, reading a good book, popping into the Senior Center, lots of fun things to do there. Stay connected.
Don’t let the holidays become something you dread. Instead, take steps to prevent the stress and depression that can descend during the holidays. Learn to recognize your holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal demands and with a little planning and some positive thinking, you can find peace and joy during the holidays.
Now Dear Reader, that’s a lot to take in. So while you are relaxing have that nice cup of tea and some holiday cookies and maybe take in a Hallmark movie.
Peg Drummey, Stoneham Board of Health Nurse, answers your questions on health. To submit a question, check at the front desk or email [email protected].

Program Spotlight
The holidays are a time to enjoy friends, family and food! And with them right around the corner, you will be barraged with lots of your favorite foods. But how are you going to enjoy the holidays and not regret eating too much and gaining weight? Here are some tips from Mystic Valley Elder Services Registered Dietitian Candace Quigley on how you can still enjoy eating your favorite foods without regret.
Weeks before the holiday arrives, be sure to get some exercise and eat healthy. As the season gets into full swing, not only will you be celebrating on that holiday but you will most likely be attending holiday parties. Unfortunately, holiday celebrations tend to be all about food. On average, Americans gain approximately 1-2 pounds around the holidays and it tends to stick and accumulate over the years.
No skipping breakfast! High fiber foods will satisfy hunger.
Don’t arrive at your party famished because you will be more likely to eat too much. If dinner is going to be late, then have a healthy snack before you go out.
Most people will consume several handfuls of chips and dip, nuts, puffs, and other appetizers. Choose only one favorite item and don’t graze all day until the meal starts. Don’t hang around the food table; Focus on people, not the food.
Enjoy your favorite beverage and then switch to water or a non-calorie drink. Try to stay away from punches, eggnog and mixed drinks. Try flavored sparkling water.
When dinner is served, there are usually a lot of choices. Choose those items that you only have on the holiday or are special to you. You could start by putting vegetables on your plate before you put the entrée on it. Survey the entire table before you take any food. Decide which foods are worth eating and which you can ignore and stick to that decision.
Eat slowly and savor every bite; it takes 20 minutes before your stomach registers that you are full.
You don’t have to be a member of the clean plate club. You can leave some bites behind.
If you plan on having seconds, wait at least 20 minutes. Even though a lot of the foods are healthy, they all have calories and should be enjoyed in moderation.
Go ahead and have dessert! Just keep it a reasonable portion and eat slowly. Again, pick an item that is your favorite that you only have during the holidays.
Say NO to food pushers! Smile and say “thanks for making that delicious dessert, but I am full right now. Can I take some home for later?”
Get some physical activity—before, during or after the celebrations. Go for a walk before you leave to go to the party or maybe you will have time after dinner. Still watch your football game but get up between quarters and during ads to mobilize yourself.
Get right back on track with healthy eating and exercise the day after each holiday.
