THE PROGRAM GUIDE OF HAWAII’S PUBLIC TELEVISION STATION JUNE 2013 | VOLUME 31, NUMBER 6
A Purpose Fulfilled Dr. Failautusi Avegalio
The Long Story Short guest pictured on this program guide cover, Dr. Failautusi Avegalio (better known as Dr. Tusi), memorized great passages of literature as part of his formal education. He hasn’t forgotten, and he can take a discussion in bold new directions by offering
a well-selected quote from a classical master. However, he doesn’t need other people’s words to speak wisdom. Like other guests on Long Story Short, he speaks from life experience. In a conversa-tion, these individuals illuminate the room with an observation casually made in the course of telling a story or answering a question.
Here are some of many examples from the program:
■ Dr. Tusi, director of a Pacific economic development program:
“Just when you think things are falling apart, they’re coming together.”
■ Momi Cazimero, graphic artist and business owner:“The first time somebody said, ‘You cannot do that, ’ and I did it, I thought: ‘Okay, the next time somebody said I cannot, I remember the first time
somebody said no’…You build on each one of those things that you’re able to overcome. You build the next can-do.”
■ Corbett Kalama, business executive and trustee of charitable foundations:
“Until we move past what dis-unifies us into what unifies us, we will never have the resolution of our ills that we are looking for.”
■ Kealoha, slam poet:
“I’m looking for people who can interface on all different kinds of levels…We can grow together and spiral and build off each other’s thoughts. I’m really not into debate as much as I’m into…elevation and building on thoughts.”
■ Kelvin Taketa, nonprofit leader:
“I really believe that the thing that distinguishes us as a species is the fact that in every human’s life, there’s a desire for greater

On the Cover This month on Long Story Short, the Director of the Pacific Business Center at the University of Hawaii Shidler College of Business explains how he uses iike – the Samoan word for attunement – to form partnerships within the community. See pages 4-5.

meaning. And that greater meaning is almost always about something beyond themselves.”
■ Pegge Hopper, artist:
“It’s kind of nice to have things come to you slowly, to work for them. Because as you get older, you appreciate things more and more and more.”
■ Roy Sakuma, ukulele impresario:
“When we have something that goes against us, that makes us a little sad or hurt, we tend to dwell on it. And that’s what I try to teach people not to do. And that’s why it’s so important to have hope. Once you have hope, you have the building block to help yourself in life.”
■ Brian Keaulana, waterman and business owner, speaking of his father, Buffalo Keaulana:
“Dad was always one where, he doesn’t force you to follow his footsteps. He always planted us and said, ‘Walk on the side and make your
own footsteps. Learn from me, but you’re on your own path, too.’”
■ Dr. James Scott, school president:
“…What makes healthy institutions work is this balance between, on one
hand, continuity, history, tradition…and innova-tion, change, and creativity. And I think holding that tension is an art form.”
■ Leona Rocha Wilson, inventor and business owner:
“I think to grow, you must listen. And there will be many, many people in your life that will share many wonderful areas of improvement for you.”
■ Jimmy Borges, PBS Hawaii Board Member, vocalist and cancer survivor:
“I always believed that my journey was going to be suc-cessful. I wasn’t afraid to fall down and get up, wipe myself off, and start all over again. There’s a song like
that. But I just felt that that was the norm. If you don’t succeed at something right away and you fall down, you get up. And if you keep doing that your whole life, you will be successful.”
There’s more wisdom where this comes from! I invite you to hear from guests on new and archival Long Story Short programs online or read written tran-scripts at PBSHawaii.org/ourproductions/longstory.

twist of fate brought Failautusi Avegalio from a coastal village in American Samoa to a teachers college in Kansas.
Right after he graduated from high school, the Samoan newspa-pers published names of local scholarship students.
“My name starting with an A, Avegalio, was the first on the list,” he told Wilcox. “The family was absolutely sure I must be the smartest kid on the island, because I was named first on the list.”
A Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox Dr. Tusi Avegalio
PREMIEREJune 25 | 7:30 pm
In a new episode of Long Story Short,Leslie Wilcox talks with Dr. Failautusi “Tusi” Avegalio, Director of the Pacific Business Center at the University of Hawaii’s Shidler College of Business.
Samoan and Western wisdom guide his mission in helping businesses form partnerships in the Pacific region.
A Purpose Fulfilled
That same day, Avegalio went to enlist in the Marines. His father found him outside the recruit-ing office and urged him to go to college instead. Avegalio obeyed.
Avegalio earned education and social science degrees from Kansas State, Truman State in Mis-souri and Brigham Young in Utah, and became Dr. Avegalio. He more commonly goes by Dr. Tusi.At the UH Pacific Business Center, which helps orga-nizations conduct business in the Pacific region, Dr. Tusi bridges traditional Pacific Islander values and Western thought.
“If you only have a foot in one world, reconciling dilem-mas may be an impossible thing,” Dr. Tusi said. “But having a foot in both worlds, I can move back and forth very comfortable [sic] in both of these worlds.”
What can be un-comfortable but
necessary: having difficult conversations between parties. “When things seem to be really dismantling all around you, they actually may be part of the process in which the next stage in your life and your journey needs to prepare itself. Because the existing foundation isn’t working, so it needs to crumble in some way, and then reconfigure.
“It takes wisdom to understand this process,” Dr. Tusi added. “You must have the courage to confront the dismantling when it does happen in your life, to stay the course.”
Although he has no direct experience in the busi-ness world, Dr. Tusi is adept at forming community partnerships. To do this, he uses a skill called “attun-ement”—intuition based on experience. Samoans call this iike; Hawaiians call it ike.
“My more quantitatively-oriented colleagues are wondering, ‘What are you talking about?’” Dr. Tusi said. “Our ancestors used iike to navigate. I think that’s what enabled them to achieve their destina-tions, and in a very small humble way, I was able to tap into that.”
Dr. Tusi expanded on the navigation example to illustrate iike. “Only you can sense when it’s time to turn into the wind and reach for shores yet un-touched,” Dr. Tusi said. “Like my mom said, anybody can hoist an anchor and unfurl a sail. You know how to do that, but it’s knowing when to do it, and more important, why do you do it.”
Dr. Tusi’s mother envisioned her son returning to the Pacific to raise the quality of life for its people. According to Dr. Tusi, his role at the Pacific Busi-ness Center is an expanded version of that dream.
In Dr. Tusi’s words: “I’m fulfilling a purpose, but on a greater scale.”

More recently, Broadway babies such as Stephen Schwartz, Marc Shaiman and Andrew Lippa represent a sampling of the Jewish talents who continue to leave their mark on musical theater. p.m. on April 15, two bomb blasts turned the Boston Marathon finish line from a scene of triumph to tragedy, leaving three dead, hundreds injured and a city gripped by heartbreak and terror. Less than five days later, the key suspects were identified and apprehended, with one dead, the other in custody. How did investigators transform the chaos of the bombing into a coherent trail of clues, pointing to the accused killers? NOVA follows the manhunt step-by-step, examin-ing the role modern technology, combined
with old-fashioned detective work, played in cracking the case. With the help of top crimi-nal investigators and anti-terrorism experts, NOVA explores which technological innova-tions worked – and which didn’t – in the most notorious case of today, and how the world of crime fighting could be transformed tomorrow. 10:00 INDEPENDENT LENS The Revolutionary Optimists Amlan Ganguly is a lawyer-turned-social entrepreneur who has transformed some of the poorest slums of Kolkata by empowering children to become leaders in improving health and sanitation. Using street theater, dance and data as their weapons, the children have cut malaria and diarrhea rates in half, increased polio vaccination rates and turned garbage dumps into playing fields. Instead of feeling powerless and doomed to perpetuate the cycle of poverty, these children are developing the tools and attitudes to create opportunities for them-selves and their communities.

Aloha PBS Hawaii, I live in South Carolina, and last night, I watched the Jake Shimabukuro documentary. Thank you.Our PBS doesn’t usually show Hawaii based programs, so it was a very nice surprise. I left Hawaii in 1989, just before Jake became a name there. And so I never sought out Jake’s music. I’m more old school, C & K, Kalapana, Rap. But now I’m going to have to catch the next con-cert in Atlanta, it’s a four hour drive. And also, the Sendai part, I couldn’t stop crying. My grandparents left Sendai for Hawaii many years ago. So, even though I don’t know any one from there, I’m sure many of my relatives perished. Anyway, just wanted to say Mahalo nui loa. Hey, you can take the girl out of Hawaii, but my heart is still Hawaii, I just happen to be residing in South Carolina. Sincerely, Merle Burge

Business and Foundation Support
“When my kids were young, they were huge fans of Curious George,” explains Brian Yonehara, owner of Pigtails & Crewcuts. “That made choosing a program to sponsor a little bit easier.”
A proud sponsor of Curious George for the past several years, Pigtails & Crewcuts is committed to supporting educational programming in Hawaii.
“My wife, Grace, and I grew up watching Sesame Street. Those nostalgic memories, along with the value of giving back to the community and knowing that we are supporting a great organization, were key in our decision to become PBS Hawaii sponsors.”
Pigtails and Crewcuts is a hair salon dedicated to making haircuts fun and stress-free for young patrons and their parents. Mahalo nui loa to Pigtails & Crewcuts for your business support. If you or your business would like to become a PBS Hawaii community partner, please contact Tatsu Sasaki at [email protected] or (808) 973-1990.
“This made me feel my learning was put to use. I got to see what I was there for and I had that feeling I was part of it.” – Elijah Eriksson “It was a very fun, but stressful experience. It was amazing throughout the entire filming process I never realized how many people would see it. Knowing it was on TV and online is truly inspirational.” – Pierce Humble
“In collaborating with others, I learned how to work as a subordinate well. Usually, I’m taking the lead and I learned to take orders. And I don’t have to be weak, just a team player.
After seeing a finished product, it feels good.I have something to be proud of, and my audience isn’t just my mom
or my classmates. I can look back at something official.” – Lahela Maxwell
“It was a stellar, informative experience. I would like to work in video production after high school and it really gave me a professional experience.” – Shea Anderson

worth putting on my resume.” – Houston Lowry
“This was an amazing experience.I loved when Lawrence [Pacheco] and Robert [Pennybacker] came down and helped us, I learned so much, thanks. Makes me super happy, it’s something I can put in my portfolio.” – Lauren Masden
“This informed me on the skills needed to be in a production team,
made me realize how important the little things do to add up and become a big thing, showed me how important teamwork is and if
one person doesn’t do their part, the whole project fails.” – Skye Parker
“Participating in PBS Hawaii’s HIKI N –O program was pretty rad! I think it was an interesting opportunity to participate in it.
