Dover’s Triple Threat Economy According to Brian Gottlob, Principal

at PolECon Research, Dover is positioned for continued growth in the coming years. Gottlob shared this view at the chamber’s recent economic forecast breakfast at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Joining Gottlob, was Gerry O’Connell, director of KW Commercial, and Pamela Goodwin, executive recruiter at CoWorx Staffing Services.

According to Gottlob’s research and predictions, the state of New Hampshire will outperform the nation in job growth despite lagging every year since 2012. He forecasts jobs will grow at a rate of 2.5 percent in 2016, compared to the national

average of 2 percent. The Seacoast will be a main driver

in this statewide job growth, as the Dover/Durham region has more than doubled the performance of the state in that area over the past decade. Gottlob sees no reason why that trend would not continue. “Growth is going to be very concentrated in a couple of areas,” Gottlob said. “We’re lucky enough to be in one of those areas.”

Dover is not simply adding jobs, though. Gottlob’s research shows that since 1990, the percentage of Dover’s population with at least a bachelor’s degree has increased more than anywhere else in the state. “Not only are we adding people to our labor force,” Gottlob said. “But we’re adding skill level to our labor force.” Additionally, a very large number of workers, 54.9 percent, in Dover are between the ages of 25 and 44, which the panel believes to be one of the strongest indicators of future economic growth.

The panel was optimistic for the future of Dover economically. Gottlob believes attracting families and individuals to the city is just as important as bringing in businesses. Dover has been doing well due in part to its affordable portfolio of commercial and residential real estate options, its attractive quality of life and plentiful cultural amenities for young families to retirees. “It’s important to make New Hampshire business-friendly,” Gottlob said “and it’s also important to be individual and family-friendly.” Gottlob’s data slides may be viewed at www.dovernh.org/news.

The Education Committee continues its work to bring elements of Dover’s education and business communities together. One example is the Committee’s Bridge to our Future event which brings area high school students together with representatives from several area businesses. The March 17th after-school event provides dozens of students with the opportunity to explore potential career paths, engage with future employers and contribute to the future workforce.

Needmoneyforcollege?TheEducationCommitteecanhelp!TheCommittee is seeking nominations for its annual Student Scholarship award. High school students and returning-to-college students with a background in community service are encouraged to apply. The application can be found on the Chamber website and is due at the end of April.

The Government Affairs Committee continues to be active and engaged.Inthelastquarter, theCommitteehasspentsignificanttimeconsidering the issue of the proposed expansion of Medicaid in New Hampshire and ultimately decided to vote in favor of the expansion, with a letter of support to the New Hampshire Legislature.

Similarly, the Government Affairs Committee considered an expression of support for Eversource’s Seacoast Reliability Project which is a project to increase the size and capacity of power lines through Madbury, Durham and Newington. After hearing presentations from Eversource and considering the matter, the Government Affairs Committee, and Chamber board, voted in favor of a letter of support to the Site Evaluation Committee for the State of New Hampshire.

On January 28, the Government Affairs Committee hosted another successful Economic Forecast Breakfast. The speakers this year included Brian Gottlob of PolEcon Research, Gerry O’Connell of KW Commercial and Pamela Goodwin of CoWorx Staffing Services, LLC. The economic news in Dover continues to be good and the forum attracted a capacity crowd.

In the last quarter, the Government Affairs Committee has continued to invite a list of interesting speakers including Robin Comstock of the New Hampshire Workforce Housing Coalition, George Regan from New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, and Deputy Mayor Robert Carrier and Superintendent of Schools Elaine Arbour.

NEMO Founder/CEO Wins Statewide AwardThe New Hampshire Union Leader has

named NEMO Equipment’s Founder/CEO, Cam Brensinger, to its 40 Under Forty for 2016. Celebrating its 15th year, the 40 Under Forty panel, comprised mostly of business people from throughout New Hampshire, chose 23 men and 17 women for the class of 2016 that, according to the Union Leader, have made professional and personal contributions towards making New Hampshire a better place.

According to the Union Leader’s website, “Innovation is at the top of Cam Brensinger’s list of priorities, as his company, NEMO Equipment, Inc., looks to market and design the highest quality products for outdoor adventure… Noting his company is on solid ground, he said one of his company’s biggest challengesreflectsonethatmayimpacttheentirestate, whichishowto attract the next generation of creative, well-educated, lifestyle-oriented employees… to prioritize strong public schools, local parks with amenities for jogging and biking, beautify our urban centers, and invest in civic spaces and cultural attractions,” said Brensinger.

“NEMO has gotten a good deal of recognition over the years, but most often within our industry. Having grown up in Manchester, winning an award from the Union Leader feels different—it really hits home and connects me back to my childhood. It makes me realize how many years have already passed, the surprising directions life can take you, and how lucky I’ve been so far. It’s really an honor and one I hope to continue to earn,” said Brensinger.
