LUBBOCK, LET’S DO LUNCH!

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK is April 7-13 this year. We want all of our volunteers to know how much we truly appreciate all that they do!!

LMOW has fifteen staff members only nine of which are full time. We rely on volunteers to deliver all of our meals.

Cambridge Dictionary definition of ‘volunteer’: “vol*un*teer: a person who does something, esp. for other people or for an organization, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it.” According to our recipients a volunteer is so much more!

Each week day, more than 59 volunteers come to LMOW to deliver meals to our recipients. On average, it takes about one hour to deliver a route. Volunteer Program which is the largest number since the program’s inception. There are a variety of local businesses that are involved - from very small offices with just a few employees to very large corporations that have over 100 staff members currently trained to deliver. Businesses or organizations choose how often they would like to volunteer based on their schedules and availability. For instance, some companies may only deliver one route one day a month, some may deliver several times each week, and others deliver multiple routes in one day but only once or twice a month.

All volunteers must attend our volunteer orientation and pass a background check. Our Volunteer Coordinator, Barbara, offers on-site training at the business to facilitate the process.

If your organization or business is interested in becoming part of the Corporate Volunteer Program, or if you would like more information, please contact Barbara at (806) 792-7971. We would love to get your group involved in the best volunteer job in town.

A note from the Executive Director, Lisa GillilandLubbock Meals on Wheels offers a special volunteer opportunity for area businesses and organizations through

our Corporate Volunteer Program. This program started over fifteen years ago and allows local businesses to become involved in meal delivery. It is a great way for local companies and organizations to get involved in the community without their employees and members giving up their free time on weekends or evenings. It can also be an excellent team building experience when employees deliver in pairs. Only a couple of people from each business are out of the office for the delivery so it does not put a strain on the company’s productivity and resources. This arrangement is also very beneficial to our program since it not only fills the critical need for delivery volunteers, it also offers built in substitutes to cover routes since there are almost always other employees that can fill in as needed.

We currently have 41 businesses and 11 organizations participating in the Corporate

“Thank y’all so very much!!! There were days that I did without because I could not drive. I have gained about 20 pounds since joining your program. Thank y’all again.” —S.F.

“Thank you for the shower of blessings on the “12 days of Christmas!” I am still full of the joy all those gifts brought me. How did you know just what I needed?!! Just like Santa in the “good ole days!” Slippers, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, shampoo and fuzzy wuzzy snuggle blanket for these extra cold nights & days. Snacks and treats from Girl Scounts and others, even toys and treats for my cats AND also for Henry. God Bless you and everyone with you and especially those who come with meals daily. —Much love,” S. S.

“I want to thank you and everyone at Meals on Wheels for getting a meal for my mother at lunch. I know that it is a healthy meal that I have had problems getting for her while I am away at work. It gives me great comfort knowing she is taken care of during the day. God Bless. —G.B.

The answer is always...

DO WE NEED VOLUNTEERS? YES!

Although Lubbock Meals on Wheels has over 1,500 volunteers on the books, we always need more! Many of these people deliver through their company or group, so they may only deliver every couple of months. Others become

ill, go on vacation, and have other interruptions that keep them from being able to volunteer. As we transition into the summer months, our volunteers’ schedules often change. While some people can only deliver in the summer months, others are away during this time of year. Summer is a great time to

get your children, grand-children, and ‘great-grands’ involved with LMOW. As much as we love having new faces around here, our recipients love it even more! You don’t have to commit to a weekly route. You can deliver as often or as little as you are able. Check us out at lubbockmealsonwheels.org.

“The cliché is that it is for a good cause, but I do it because I enjoy the people. I know that I am needed and that I am appreciated.”

“I enjoy getting to work with the Staff at LMOW and the interaction with all of the volunteers. I volunteer because it’s a lot better than working.”

“I love volunteering because I meet a lot of nice people. They wait for me to visit with them. You get so attached you don’t want to give them up. I love taking care of the people.”

“I continue to volunteer because of the blessings I get from our clients. We are helping them but in turn they are heling us. They are blessed but they bless us.”

“I really like the people. It’s my way of giving back to our community.”

“Seeing the people that really need someone to reach out to them no matter what social economic level they are in. They always need someone

to reach out to them. It makes me feel good to know that they have people who care for them and knowing I have a part in that.”

“I just love people. It comes from the heart. I feel a connection with the people we serve. They make our day just as we make theirs.”

“I get satisfaction seeing the clients and being able to provide them something every day.”

“It is really gratifying to be able to connect with the people we serve.”

“My daughter started delivering when she was a high school student. She graduated and my husband and I took over her route

when she went off to college. I have been delivering ever since. My favorite thing about volunteering is seeing my clients every week.”

“Helping the people who are less fortunate than us. Sometimes this maybe the only warm meal they get all day.”

THANKS TO ALL WHO MADE MARDI GRAS, 2019 A SUCCESS!Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Mardi Gras, 2019 was lots of fun, as always. This year we raised over $104,000 with over 1,400 people in attendance. There was plenty of food with thirty-seven restaurants featuring their fare, entertainment by Bo Garza, table-side entertainers, a large silent auction, Character Selfies photo booth, and the always fun activity area. The Mardi Gras King and Queen (Nick Kraynok and Brittany Escobar) provided entertainment, judged booths, and got people up and dancing!

The 27th Annual Annie’s Chat & Chew was on April 13th this year. This delicious fish fry, in memory of our longtime volunteer Annie Sanders, benefits Lubbock Meals on Wheels. Annie’s family and friends fried fresh catfish and prepared lots of homemade sides and desserts. The youth in the community provided some fun entertainment. It was a great time to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ Pet Program is currently helping recipients care for 202 dogs and 98 cats. We are sending out almost 2,000 pounds of pet food each month. Thanks to your generous donations specifically to this special program, we are able to help pets and their humans stay together.

“Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.” ~ Orhan Pamuk

• Dogs’ ears are extremely expressive. It’s no wonder! There are more than a dozen separate muscles that control a dog’s ear movements.

• While the Chow Chow dogs are well known for their distinctive blue-black tongues, they’re actually born with pink tongues. They turn blue-black at 8-10 weeks of age.

• Dogs have about 10 vocal sounds.

“Cats are connoisseurs of comfort.” ~ James Herriot

• An adult cat can run 12 miles per hour and sprint 30 miles per hour.

• Cats have over 100 vocal sounds.

• Cats bodies are extremely flexible-their skeleton has 230 bones. (The human body has 206 bones.) This helps with their flexibility and allows them to fit through very small spaces.

“At UNITED SUPERMARKETS, it’s long been said that first and foremost we’re in the people business... we just happen to sell groceries. To us, that means that beyond delivering the best possible service experience and the highest quality products to the guests that visit our stores,

it is also our responsibility to actively work to make our communities the best they can be. A company with core values like ours attract truly great people with a passion for servant leadership and it’s those very people who are out making a difference in the communities we serve.

We are proud to support them in both individual and company organized community service. Since 1916, ultimate service in our stores and in our communities has been a core value of our company and it’s something that every company leader we’ve ever had has kept a priority.

It is important to us that our team members feel empowered and supported to serve and give back.”

~ MARY MYERS, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS MANAGER, UNITED SUPERMARKETS ~

SPECIAL DELIVERY…

LPD Day!In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. This year, on Wednesday, May 15th, the Lubbock Police Department will deliver all of Lubbock Meals on Wheels’ hot lunches to over 820 recipients on 59 different routes.

We appreciate the support we receive from LPD each year. We are excited to have LPD officers help provide meals to our homebound, elderly, and disabled recipients.

Every day, but especially during Police Week, please be sure to show your appreciation to LPD and all local Peace Officers. They put their lives on the line for us and provide support in more ways than most of us realize.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED W/ LMOW? My disabled uncle lived in San Antonio, away from any of our family that could take care of him on a day to day basis. The local Meals on Wheels program made it possible for him to continue to live on his own for many, many years. After he passed, I decided I needed to give back to the program that was so important in his life, so I became a volunteer

driver for Lubbock Meals on Wheels. I delivered a regular route for several years and truly believe in the mission of the organization and the dedication of the staff and volunteers. I am honored to now be a part of the staff.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A NONPROFIT PROFESSIONAL?The fact that I can help make even the smallest positive impact on someone’s life, especially those in need.

WHO DO YOU FIND INSPIRATIONAL?People with artistic abilities. Those who can draw, paint, sing, play an instrument, etc. I have no artistic ability

at all and find those who are artistically gifted inspirational.

DO YOU HAVE ANY KIDS AND/OR PETS? I love pets and recently lost my “puppy” who lived with me for 16 years. I hope to adopt a new rescue dog sometime in the near future.

WHAT CAN YOU SIMPLY NOT RESIST? Talking. I am sure people wish I would shut up! (no we don’t, Weldon)

YOU ARE A NEW ADDITION TO A CRAYON BOX. WHAT COLOR ARE YOU AND WHY? I think I would be the YELLOW crayon and my contribution to the pictures would be to try and bring light and sunshine.

WHAT WOULD I FIND IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR RIGHT NOW? Stay out of my fridge and mind your business! Okay, lots of cheese. It’s my favorite food group.

IF YOU COULD BE A SUPER HERO, WHAT POWER WOULD YOU POSSESS? Easy! The power to manipulate lottery numbers!

WHAT IS YOUR MIDDLE NAME? Kregg

WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE DISH THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY WON’T EAT? Not a big fan of sushi. Everything else is fair game! Oh, and if you cooked the sushi, I would eat that too!
