Colin Powell visits Sudan
USA’s response to Sudan
On June 30, 2004 Colin Powell went to Sudan to view the situation. He said there were definite signs of genocide.US began writing a plan for the UN to place economic sanctions on Sudan.
Problems for the US
If the United States makes Sudan mad then they may not help us in the war on Terrorism.
Since Osama bin Laden once lived in Sudan we need them to help us in the war.
UN ResponseUnited Nations World Food Program has provided food to 82 out of 154 refugee camps.
They demanded that the government of Sudan disarm the rebels.
They have not yet passed a resolution to place economic sanctions on Sudan.
Why no sanctions?
Both China and France get large amounts of oil from Sudan.
They do not want to make Sudan’s government mad.
