However, we are not told the content of his teaching. What is important is that Jesus taught with authority; the kind of authority that the Scribes did not possess. In teaching, Jesus was not simply offering his opinion or handing on traditions. He spoke as one who had authority in himself to reveal the meaning of the Scriptures. Jesus’ teaching also had the effect of exposing evil in order that it could be expelled as we see in the expulsion of the unclean spirit from the man who was possessed. They also recognize the connection between Jesus’ teaching and his power to dispel evil. Because of this, Jesus’ fame spread throughout Galilee.

“I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose restraint upon you, but for the sake of propriety and adherence to the Lord with out distraction.” In St. Paul’s letter to the

Corinthians 7:32-35, Paul instructs us how to order our lives, how to live our lives daily for the Lord. Our lives must be prioritized accordingly with God at the center of all we do and all we are as Catholics. To hold your rela-tionship with God in the highest esteem, the key to your daily life, is to trust Him in all things and to pray to Him through all situations. To live for Christ is to live for oth-ers. During difficulties, Padre Pio was known for telling his parishioners to, “Pray, hope and don’t worry. Worry is a waste of time.” By turning your heart to the Lord, all others things do fall into place. A new perspective may help you find peace and the answer you are looking for. Learn, Act, Connect and Pray- Living for God calls us to prayer to see through God’s lenses with compassion for others and kindness. St. Paul calls us to “cling to the Lord” and by doing so watch as your hope, peace and joy grow and your cares, anxieties and concerns diminish as you see yourself and those around you in a new light, as you put Christ first.

    Deuteronomy 18:15-20. Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9. 1 Corinthians 7:32-35. Mark 1:21-28.

Teaching with Authority. Jesus begins his ministry with us this liturgical year doing two things. He is teaching with authority – like no other. And his teaching spills into action for the benefit of another – mercy at work. How is Jesus astonishing me by what he teaches? How am I listening for his words, his call, his teaching? How is my listening spilling out into mercy thoughts, mercy action, mercy works?

The SVDP will host a White Elephant Auction in Belleville. Details to follow. They are looking for donations of all types of wrapping paper. Please see Maryann Klosterman, Rose Jordan or Joan Scharf if you have any questions.

As we prepare to enter the Lenten season, I hear many talk about their ideas of what they will give up...perhaps we can think in the terms of what we can pay forward. Do you know an elderly person who needs a daily call; or a food pantry that needs supplies or help, etc. Jesus did not give up...he gave of himself for the benefit of others!
