Special Guest Speaker dr. Stephen Sands, Psyd,earned his doctorate in child and school Psychology from new york University and completed his fellowship in clinical neuropsychology at thememorial sloan kettering cancercenter. Dr. sands is an associateProfessor of medical Psychology inthe Departments of Pediatrics andPsychiatry at the columbia University medical centerand is the Director of the valerie fund Psycho-socialand Palliative care Programs and co-Director of thecenter for comprehensive Wellness.
Dr. sands is a child psychologist who provides mentalhealth services to patients and families currently undergoing treatment within the pediatric hematology,oncology and stem cell transplantation program at thecolumbia University medical center and the morganstanley children’s Hospital of ny-Presbyterian. as a pediatric neuropsychologist, Dr. sands performs neuropsychological evaluations for pediatric hematology,oncology and stem cell transplantation patients as partof ongoing clinical research studies that evaluate the impact of treatment. He provides clinical assessmentsfor those returning to school or those off treatment whomay benefit from receiving appropriate educationalplacements and remedial interventions. Dr. sands is on the steering committee of the Behavioral sciencecommittee and the cns Brain tumor committee withinthe children’s oncology group (cog), the primary research consortium of over 270 Pediatric oncology programs across north america. Dr. sands is also onthe scientific council of the international society for Pediatric oncology (sioP) and is actively involved in numerous national and international research studiesexamining the late effects of treatment for pediatric cancer and blood disorders. lastly, Dr. sands has published numerous articles in peer reviewed medicaljournals on the late effects of treatment for pediatriccancer and blood disorders.
