2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

HOPE ACADEMY

A remarkable, God-centered education for the youth of the city.

A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST

Who is happy on the day that a crop of wheat is harvested?

The harvesters? Definitely! The planters? Absolutely! Those who carried water to the plants? No doubt. Those who weeded? Certainly. Even the person who bought the seed and the fertilizer? Of course!

All the laborers rejoice equally on harvest day. Each one is important. Each one is necessary, even

though no one’s work is sufficient alone.

What about God? Is He happy about the harvest?

It turns out that He is the happiest of all the laborers because without His part, all is lost.

This annual report tells the story of another bountiful harvest of righteousness at Hope Academy—

a harvest you had a hand in producing. Read about our work together with great joy.

In summary, 425 students were blessed with a most remarkable, God-centered education;

you got the unmitigated delight of participation; and best of all, God got the glory. A golden triangle, indeed!

3 ELEMENTS OF CLASSICAL EDUCATION AT HOPE ACADEMY

3

"The goal for my class is for my students to grow in wisdom and virtue, by exposing them to truth, goodness,

and beauty; seeing the truth of God can change their lives."

Debbie HarrisKindergarten Teacher, at Hope since 2000

Truth, Goodness, & Beauty

CLASSICAL FRAMEWORK

Hope Academy is classical in that it is an education in truth, goodness, and beauty, and therefore, ultimately an education for the glory of God.

1

Hope Academy is classical in its curriculum. We teach the fine arts and Latin; we foster wonder in the study of the creation; we teach the Great Books, which means that across all grades, we teach the greatest Book of all.

2

Hope Academy is classical in its methods of instruction. We make use of rhymes and songs in the elementary grades to reinforce learning, and Socratic discussions and debates in the upper grades. We teach with the aim of not merely informing the mind but forming the hearts of our students to love what God loves.

3

6

"Each of us has faced odds that could have devastated lives, relationships, and hope. But by God's grace, we are all here today. He has gone above and beyond so that we might live lives that point to His goodness."

"The parental involvement component is crucial. I love the community and camaraderie it creates, especially at Saturday school. When I saw

how respectfully the students interacted with the teachers — and that parents could get a good nugget of truth —

I came to appreciate the required participation."

Steven Wood Father of Hope Academy Student

Moms' Bible Studies are offered in Spanish and English, to foster both emotional and spiritual maturity.

Hope Academy cares holistically for families through spiritual, emotional, and practical services.

SPIRITUAL

SUPPORT

HOME

VISITS

Each fall, our teachers visit every single one of our students at his/her home.

This builds a strong partnership between parents, teachers, and students.

Most families paid $60 per month in tuition.

Parents gave back at events, by volunteering in the classroom, and throughout the school.

Parents attended seven mandatory events per academic year.

PARENT

COMMITMENTS

Twice a year, every parent attends Parent Involvement Day for a class observation and parenting workshop.

In 2015, we began monthly classes to equip Kindergarten parents and help them build community with each other.

Every student at Hope Academy memorizes the Declaration.

We go to Hope Academy, a Kingdom School. We exalt the name of Jesus.

We recognize His presence here. We believe in God the Father,

God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We believe the Bible to be God’s holy word,

to be complete truth, a guide to our feet.

I am created in the image of God, and He loves me, beyond my imagination.

God calls me to love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ—to listen and obey—to listen and obey the first time,

not the second time or the third time, but the first time.

To use words with kindness; to respect God’s creation and all authority;

to not seek harm against another, but to love and encourage others

and to serve my community.

For I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

I can be a teacher, a lawyer, a parent, a missionary, a doctor, a musician, a coach, a business owner,

a computer programmer, or a poet.

We will display a crown of beauty instead of ashes; the oil of gladness instead of mourning;

a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.

We will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.

OUR VOLUNTEERS

"You're making an impact. I see it every day. Your investments are having huge ripple effects

into the futures of these young men and women."

Sue Pearce Assistant Principal in the Upper School

Each week our amazing volunteers read with students, taught chess, ran mathematics and robotics clubs, mentored students, helped in the classrooms, assisted with office & building projects, etc.

121 REGULAR VOLUNTEERS

For the last nine years, John Edgerton has spent two days a week teaching students the art and joy of playing chess! Last year alone, there were over 638 games of chess played by 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders.

638+ GAMES OF CHESS PLAYED

Every Wednesday morning for 11 weeks, a faithful volunteer, Doug Smith, held a hospitality club for 4th graders. By serving hot chocolate and apple cider to Hope Academy staff, the students learned the importance of service and hospitality. Every cup was served with a smile!

440+ CUPS OF HOT COCOA SERVED

Throughout the year, numerous churches, businesses, and schools partnered with Hope Academy to do some amazing things: landscaped, cleaned, painted, helped teachers, donated school supplies, hosted a Christmas store for families, and more!

It does not include in-kind donations, Title Funds, Free/Reduced Lunch Reimbursements, or School District Reimbursements. 2. The facility expense represents Hope Academy's share of the building expenses. Teen Challenge contributes roughly an additional $260,000 to cover building costs. 3. Hegenes Management manages the Building Financials on behalf of Hope Academy. Both sets of financials are rolled together and audited annually. Complete audited financial statements are available upon request (the 2015-2016 audit was not completed at the time of this publication).
