Learn a lesson from the fig treeThe part of the Gospel that talks

about the fig tree got stuck in my head so I decided to ask people what they could teach me about figs. I heard: It’s

what’s on the inside of a Fig Newton. Adam and Eve covered themselves with fig leaves. Jesus curses a fig tree in the Bible. They pair well with brie and a good wine. I’m going to let you guess who told me what.

Please allow me to share with you a few things I have since learned about figs and fig trees.

The great thing about parables is that they make a parallel to things that we know a great deal about; that’s the whole point. So it makes sense that figs are mentioned more than any other tree in the Bible because for the people of Jesus’ day, figs and fig trees were ubiquitous.

Jesus didn’t say that the fig tree would blossom. It’s because the flower is hidden inside the fruit. I would even like to think it is a symbol of the fig’s humility. No pomp and circumstance, just the presence of the leaves make known the fruitfulness it promises.

Most fig trees bear fruit twice, once in early spring and then again in the summer or early fall. The first fruit is a product of the remnants of the fall crop; the fruit isn’t very good if it’s edible at all. The second crop is hearty and delicious.

Curiously, the only way the fruit ripens is when it is attached to the branch. If you pick them off the tree early, they don’t ripen. If you don’t pick the fruit when it does ripen, it will fall to the ground and it can make the roots rot and kill the tree.

As we come closer to the feast of Christ the King and around the corner to Advent I would invite you to think about what those few sentences about the fig tree might mean for you and what Jesus has promised us. You may find you know more than you think.Peace and good,

Rosa RodriguezExecutive Assistant to the Liturgy Office

LITURGY CONNECTION

Simple Thoughts... Most of us have seen in person, or images, something like a sidewalk preacher standing on a milk crate, holding a sign with a Scripture verse sketched out, yelling “The end is near!” The readings we hear today can sound a bit like that on the surface. And in some ways, Jesus, in the Gospel, was talking about the end of time. He was also talking about the end of his own life. But wait, there’s more! We can frame the readings with the psalm, “You are my inheritance, O Lord.” Now, we can look deeper. Jesus is, as the 2nd reading describes, the one sacrifice to redeem the sin of all, opening the heavens for us. If the earth should be consumed in some fiery comet or end on whatever the next day some ancient calendar ends, it shouldn’t matter. We know not the time. Jesus told us we won’t know, and its amazing how many people continue to try to figure out what God Himself said is not ours to know. What we can know: Jesus came into this world to be in relationship with us and His death proves His love for us. His resurrection shines as a beacon of what is to come. So when the end (or our end) should come, His one life and His love is proof that He is our inheritance, and that inheritance in Him is life eternal.

Concept of the new Conventual Church of Our Lady of the Angels at the Franciscan Renewal Center as of Oct. 2013. Subject to change.

The design of our new church continues to take shape...

As we continue to design, develop and refine our new places of gathering and worship, we invite you to keep

this process in your prayers. Together we share the work of RENEWING LIVES now and

for generations to come.

Special Collection Next Week

Next week we will take up the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). CCHD is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independence. See the flyer in this week’s bulletin for more information.

For those of you who have opted to use the Collection Envelope Boxes, you will find an extra envelope for this special collection in your box. If you do not use our envelope system, or if you have misplaced yours, or in case you forget them, you can always request an extra envelope at the Front Desk. Thank you.

Are you moving away?A wonderful aspect of being part of a church community like the Casa is the relationships formed from being involved in worship and ministry activities together and just “doing life” with brothers and sisters in Christ. So, when the time comes to move away, it may be difficult to say good-bye to your church family. Please consider letting us “send you off ” with our blessing and

prayers. Give us a call or email, and we will be happy to offer a blessing. Also, if you would like to remain connected to us after you move, there are lots of ways to stay informed about what is happening here via email and our website, plus social networking (like Facebook and Twitter.) And, of course, you are always welcome to come home for a visit at any time!

Let’s Celebrate More Franciscan Saints!

St. Agnes of Assisi was the sister of St. Clare and her first follower. Two weeks after Clare’s departure, Agnes followed. Her family tried to drag her back out of the monastery, but her body became

so heavy that even several knights couldn’t budge her. Her uncle Monaldo tried to strike her with a sword, but his arm became paralyzed. She was then left in peace to live a life of austerity, partaking only of bread and water and wearing a course habit. She is the patroness of Catholic Charities. Celebrate her feast day on November 19.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary was the daughter of the King of Hungary but chose a life of penance and simplicity even when she married and lived at court. Elizabeth had such love for the poor that she would take loaves of bread from the court kitchen and feed those outside the gates. Because of this, she is known as the patroness of bakers; she is also the patroness of the Secular Franciscan order. St. Elizabeth’s feast day is November 17.

Family Faith Activities Nov. 15 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Changes are coming! Many times we do not welcome changes as they can be uncomfortable and scary, especially for little ones. We can find security in our relationships and confidently accept change knowing we will continue to be loved by our family and by God. We can impart this sense of trust and confidence in our children by our daily assurances that nothing can change our love for them. Jesus teaches us that things in our world will change and the world itself will come to an end. We don’t need to be afraid because God’s love for us will never end. Gather your family and ask each person to complete this statement “If I knew for sure that the world would end tomorrow, I would...." Read Mark 13:24-32 and discuss:• What will happen when the Son of Man comes in glory?• Who is the Son of Man?• Who will be gathered and saved?• When will this happen?Paper Plate Clouds: Give each person a white paper plate and cotton balls to make a cloud. Come up with encouraging words to help each person live their lives in readiness for Jesus’ return. Write or draw those words and ideas in the middle of the plate.

Heaven: Have each person draw a picture of what they think heaven is like. Share and describe each picture. Summarize by explaining that God wants all people to live together forever in heaven with God, Jesus and

the Holy Spirit. We can only imagine the beauty of such a glorious place.Concluding Prayer: Glory be to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.

In the midst of a busy life, many people find it difficult to notice God’s action in their daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, many of us long for a more conscious experience of God’s presence and love.

A spiritual director/companion is trained to listen and encourage you to explore a closer relationship with God through conversation, listening and prayer.

For what we have received from God’s bounty, we return to the Lord with gratitude! Join in this festive liturgy where the community gives thanks together.

We invite you to bring food for the poor to Mass on this day. Although the food may not be able to reach the needy in time for Thanksgiving dinner, it will visibly connect this holiday to our service of the poor and can help to replenish the shelves of a local food distribution program after Thanksgiving.

Many people bring canned food to Mass each week —thank you for your generosity!!

You are invited to bring a loaf of bread from home – we will bless it at Mass, for you to share

at your dinner table.

The success of this year's Renewing Lives Breakfast was possible because of the hard work of our fabulous volunteers and staff. We are grateful for them all, including the Casa gardeners and the children and youth g r o u p m e m b e r s w h o c o l l e c t e d natural materials from our grounds and constructed the centerpieces for the day, the hosts who gathered friends at their tables, those who welcomed guests at the registration tables and all who provided the behind the scenes work to create this event. And a special thank you to our generous sponsors who helped underwrite the cost of the event!

About the Franciscan Renewal Center

The Franciscan Renewal Center began in 1951 as a place for retreat programs. Affectionately known as the “Casa de Paz y Bien” or simply “the Casa,” it is today a Catholic renewal center in Paradise Valley, Ariz., offering spiritual growth, healing and transformation that moves lives into the service of others. The Casa is an active religious community of the Order of Friars Minor — part of the worldwide Franciscan family, following in the footsteps of Sts. Francis and Clare of Assisi. The Casa is a wholly owned entity of the Franciscan Province of Saint Barbara, based in Oakland, Calif., that works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.Activities at the Casa include daily and Sunday Mass, retreats, gathering space for non-profit groups, licensed behavioral health counseling, as well as more than 50 volunteer ministries that give aid to the poor or vulnerable, empower individuals to improve their circumstances, and build community fellowship.

How can a gift cost less than another gift? Giving appreciated property such as real estate or securities instead of cash can reduce the "cost" of a gift. Avoiding capital gains taxes by giving appreciated property reduces the "out of pocket" cost of making a gift. Look over all of your assets and consider their potential for you and the Franciscan Renewal Center, our “Casa.”

RENEWING LIVES Campaign committee members and the Casa's staff are deeply committed and working tirelessly to bring the vision into reality. Check here each week for the latest progress on the Casa's Master Plan.

Retention BasinsDigging has begun as scheduled. Trucks will be hauling 10,000 cubic yards of dirt over the next week. Please be aware of construction vehicles while driving and walking on the property.

Note: The area north of the Meditation Chapel and east to the oleander line will be cordoned off. The Ramadas, Labyrinth, Stations of the Cross and desert walk will be unavailable through early December. Even when there is no activity, please respect the construction barrier.

The New Church of Our Lady of the AngelsFinal dimensions on all of the windows are in place, and art glass designs are being firmed up. We are in the process of acquiring bells for the bell tower. The Church Design Committee continues to refine items for the interior of the church. Stay tuned: A decision on the construction contract will be made in the coming weeks.

Community Life Center (CLC)Preliminary drawings are expected by the end of January and will be shared with the CLC Advisory Group at that time.

Assisi Solar ProjectCurrently, we are awaiting the permit from APS. Our contractor, Advanced Energy Systems, will provide a construction schedule to the Casa for approval when this process is complete.
