A SEASON OF GIVING

Part 1 – Giving Self

Romans 12.1-2

In search of a hero

The world longs for heroes .

Consider the heroes of faith listed in Hebrews 11. (Note 11.38a)

The challenge (Romans 12.1-2)

What does it mean to be a living sacrifice?

Be holy – live in a way that is acceptable to God.

Are Timothy and Epaphroditus heroes? (Philippians 2.19-30)

Timothy – a son (2.19-24)

He is probably Paul’s closest companion. (1 Corinthians 4.17)

He has a genuine faith (2 Timothy 1.5) – even from his childhood. (2 Timothy 3.14-15)

He is a model servant who cares deeply for the Philippian church.

He is an example of one who does not look for his own interests . (2.4)

He represents a stark contrast to those who preach out of envy and strife. (1.15-17)

He is a servant of the gospel (2.22) – like Jesus before him. (2.7)

Epaphroditus – a brother (2.25-30)

He shares Paul’s bonds of affection for the Philippian church. (2.26)

He shares common feelings, work, and even danger with Paul.

He gambles with his own life in associating with Paul.

His service and sacrifice are examples for others to respect and follow.

He risks sickness and even death for the sake of Christ and His church. (2.30)

What about us?

We celebrate the life of one who “ … made Himself

of no reputation … ”

Are we truly willing to be a living sacrifice?
