She currently serves as an interpreter in Minnesota state district and federal courts. A former law professor and practicing attorney, Ms. Najarro Smith had a distinguished legal career in her native country of Guatemala. She graduated at the top of her class from the Rafael Landívar Jesuit University, where she later served on the law school faculty as professor of civil and criminal procedure. She served as Chief of Staff for the special habeas corpus court created in Guatemala during the 1980s, charged with searching for disappeared persons. As an attorney in private practice representing IBM, she obtained a landmark decision from the Supreme Constitutional Court concerning freedom of information in a government contract dispute. In Minnesota, Ms. Najarro Smith has served on the Board of Directors of the Center for Victims of Torture, the Emerson School Program Council, the International Institute of Minnesota and the Sexual Violence Center. She chaired the International Relations Committee of the League of Women Voters of Minneapolis and was appointed her to serve as a member of the Implementation Committee on Racial Fairness in the Courts.
