Gavilan College Moments• Gavilan College was originally established in 1919 as San Benito County Junior College. Gavilan College will be celebrating 100 years of education. The Gavilan College District invites the community to join us in our Centennial Year Celebration beginning in 2019.

• In 1969 Gavilan College hosted El Teatro Campesino’s 3 Actos.

• In 1977 Gavilan was only the second college in the state to appoint a woman to the position of Athletic Director.

• The chapel was used in a scene in the 1981 mini-series East of Eden. Several Gavilan staff were used as extras in the production.

• The arboretum was opened in 2013, although most plantings date back to 1966, when the Gilroy campus opened.

One tree, an Omeo Gum (Eucalyptus neglecta), is the current national champion tree. This means that it is the largest known example of its species in the United States. This tree can be seen at the southeast corner of the administration parking lot.

CommencementSpeakerJenny Dearborn, MED, MBA

Jenny Dearborn is a champion of equality and diversity.

A leader in learning, leadership, and business culture, Jenny began her career as an instructor and instructional designer and is currently the Executive Vice President and Chief Talent & Leadership Officer for SAP’s 90,000+ employees worldwide.

Jenny is a regular contributor to mainstream business and industry news media. In 2017 she won Female Business Executive of the Year at The Stevie Awards and the international Athena Leadership Award. In 2017 and 2016 she was recognized by the Financial Times as one of the top 20 global executive LGBTQ allies. Jenny was recognized in 2014, 2015 and 2016 as one of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Technology by the National Diversity Council. She received the 2014 Silicon Valley Women of Influence Award and the 2013 Silicon Valley Tribute to Women in Industry Award. In 2015 she was Executive Producer of the popular twice-monthly radio show “Game Changers: Women in Business” on the Voice of America Radio Network to support advancing women in business.

Jenny earned an MBA in Organizational Development from San Jose State University, a Masters of Education and Teaching Credential from Stanford University, a Bachelors of Arts in English Literature from University of California at Berkeley and an Associates of Arts degree in Social Sciences from American River College in Sacramento.

She has embraced her personal challenges, Dyslexia, ADHD and OCD, that were formative in her youth and now harness them as sources of strength. Multi-hyphenated, Jenny is a film producer and professional artist, painting large-scale acrylic on canvas pop-art as well as a competitive athlete.

Gavilan College is privileged to host Ms. Dearborn as a Commence-ment Speaker to the Graduating class of 2018.

Honorary Degree RecipientRoberta Hughan

For Gilroy resi-dents, the name Roberta Hughan is synonym-ous with the City itself.

Roberta was born, raised, schooled, worked and volun-teered within her beloved City of Gilroy. She has two sons, a daughter, and five

grandchildren. And she is very proud that all five grandchildren have graduated from universities.

Following her graduation from UC Berkeley’s College of Architecture in 1955, Roberta went on to work at achitectural firms in Berkeley and San Francisco, eventually returning to Gilroy working at her own firm of Hughan and Hughan, Architects in 1964.In 1977, Roberta was elected to the Gilroy City Council and re-elected in 1981.

Roberta set a presidence when she was elected as Mayor of Gilroy in 1983 and re-elected in 1987 through 1991 as she was the first woman to have ever been elected as Mayor in Gilroy.

Similarly impressive are Roberta’s appoint-ments: Board of Directors to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Board of Directors of the California Air Resources Board, Member to the Santa Clara County Valley Transportation Agency Citizen’s Advisory Group, Gilroy Historic Heitage Committee and to the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women

It is, however, her volunteer positions that truly exemplify her commitment to the community Roberta calls home and her integrity to those in her community: Theater Angels Art League, American Association of University Women, various Women’s rights organizations, St. Joseph’s Family Center, St. Mary’s School parent groups and to the Gilroy Garlic Festival Advisory Committee…just to name a few.

For all her endeavors and dedication, Gavilan College recognizes Ms. Roberta Hughan.

Posthumous Honorary Degree RecipientAntonio Del Buono

Antonio Del Buono has best been described as a man whose faith in mankind was always evident - he was a fighter for every cause in whch he believed.

At the age of 10, following the death of his father, Antonio was forced

to leave school to support himself and his mother. Although not participating in a formal education, he never stopped reading or learning – such was his desire for knowledge. Influenced by his reading of the social movements in the 1930s and affected by the depression, Antonio began his personal involvement in the organization of farm workers, which continued to his last days.

During the 1940s Antonio met and was influenced by Sol Alinsky, Cesar Chavez, and Fred Ross, so much so that he became the first president of the Oxnard, California Community Services Organization. He organized voter registration drives and worked extensively in local and statewide campaigns through 1974.

In 1965, Antonio was the pioneer for the fledgling California Rural Legal Asssistance program, and organized communities to begin legal services for the poor working in Madera, Merced, Fresno, and Gilroy. He later became involved in senior citizens’ activities, taught social workers at San Jose State University and became a lecturer at countless universities as well as a featured speaker.

In July 1999, the Gilroy Unified School District opened the doors to the new Antonio Del Buono Elementary School – dedicated to a man whose quest for knowledge could not be deterred.

Antonio was known to have said, “A good education builds a good citizen.”

Gavilan College honors Mr. Antonio Del Buono; his fight for justice, equity, and his continued desire for knowledge.

Associated Student of Gavilan College, President Jorge Adam Lopez-Rosas (Adam)

Jorge Adam Lopez-Rosas has been an active member of the Associated Students of Gavilan College (ASGC) for the past two years as Vice President of Marketing and currently as President.

Adam is currently working as a tutor on campus assisting students with their academic needs while also holding an additional part-time job off campus.

Adam is an intelligent, talented, kind, and compassionate individual who wants nothing but the best for every person he encounters on his journey. His approachable, supportive, and understanding demeanor is what makes him such a humble and noble leader on campus. In fact, Adam is an active club member, a representative of the President’s Council, and consistently volunteers to assist with campus activities.

As a first-generation student, Adam’s goals are to obtain an Associate of Science from Gavilan College and transfer to a four-year university to pursue aerospace engineering.

Adam is respected not only among his student peers, he is held in high esteem by Gavilan faculty, staff, and administration as he is recognized as a true leader.

Outstanding ScholarGilroy Early College Academy

Sameera KhanAn outstanding graduating GECA student, Sameera Khan graduates tonight with an Associate in Art and Certificate of Achievement in Liberal Arts-Multiple Subjects.

As a biochemistry and public health double major who will be transferring to UC Berkeley, Sameera aspires to pursue a career in healthcare. Sameera’s altruistic and humble nature is apparent as she states: “I’m very passionate about combining my love for sociology and science to help make advances in rural health care whether it be through research, community programs, or some mixture of the both!”

In addition to her scholastic achievements, Sameera has also been involved with the Miss CEO and Interact Organization which empowers young women in the community to become leaders.

Sameera’s strength stems from those who have been her strongest source of inspiration – her parents. Immigrating from Pakistan, Sameera witnessed and recognized the inequity and discrimination her parents have faced. With their fortitude and determination they have encouraged by example Sameera’s drive to pursue her passions.

Maria de Jesus Rios-ZendejasAvid reader and writer, Gavilan College’s Outstanding Scholar, Maria de Jesus Rios-Zendejas graduates tonight with an AA-T and CA in English and is looking forward to studying English at Sonoma State University beginning Fall 2018.

Her aspirations are not only to teach and publish her own book, Maria looks forward to making others as passionate about English as she is.

Maria credits her love for the written word to her father thanks to his reading stories to her as a child. As a young adult, Maria states that she can always be found with a pen in her hand, whether it be on the bus at the duck pond, or at home, she can be found doing one, or the other.Maria recognizes her parents as the source of inspiration and success, having taught her humility, integrity, and true strength of character.

“My parents have indubitably been my biggest inspiration. Every day of my life, I have seen hard work personified in both my mother and father… they are working as hard as ever for me and for everything they have. Eighteen years ago, they brought me to this country. They sacrificed so much of themselves to give me the opportunities they never had. They continue to work themselves to the bone so I won’t have to. Everything I am and will ever be is because of them.”

It is the pleasure of Gavilan College to present Maria de Jesus Rios-Zendejas as the Outstanding Scholar for Gavilan College’s class of 2018.

Gavilan College’s Health Services IS Alice Dufresne Reyes.

Alice’s career at Gavilan began in 1994. In her 25 year career she has: provided support to students and staff; presented for small groups, at the College’s

Professional Learning Days, within the community, and at State conferences. For the past 15 years, she has taught the Human in the Life Cycle course.

Alice received her AS in Nursing at Chaffey College, followed by her BS in Nursing at Sonoma State, and her MSN at UC San Francisco.

Alice’s contributions to the Gavilan College community are surpassed only by her dedication and love for Gavilan. She has overseen a variety of awareness initiatives over her career: bringing the National AIDS Quilt to the campus in December 1994; HIV testing on campus; the 1st LGBTQ Coming Out Day; Pandemic Flu and suicide intervention training, implementation of Kognito online peer support; the Student Health 101 online magazine, and Not Anymore sexual violence awareness video. Her advocacy for Mental Health and health education awareness and services are too numerous to list, but

Jennifer graduated from San Francisco State Univ-eristy majoring in Modern European History.

At Gavilan in addiation to teaching Early and Modern American History and California His-tory, Jennifer is a part of the Service Learn-ing Committee, has been a member of the Gavilan Academic Senate, and is currently the Student Learning Outcomes Faculty Liai-son.

Jennifer’s students admire her passion for

include: the installation of a NAMI kiosk in the Student Center; AED installation on campus; Veteran’s Van visits; Furry Friends during finals week; and her TV program “Let’s Ask Alice” (which ran for 10 years in the community).

Alice’s greatest legacy, however, is the Annual Health Faire, which will celebrate its 25th year in October of 2018.

Everyone knows Alice for her gentle strength, her knowledge, and her compassion and putting others first. It is with profound admiration that we recognize Alice Dufresne-Reyes as Full-time Faculty of the Year.

Find someone that you connect with on campus be it the staff such as a class faculty, College Health Nurse, Secretaries in any of the offices, your Counselor, Coach, Staff in the financial aid office, or the library, etc. Find someone to share your story with and let them know how you are doing. Get involved in one thing on campus, and/or attend one thing that you don’t have to for a class but just because. Be part of the Community…”

Rho Alpha Mu Honor Society Honor society membership has a long history in America, beginning when tutors and advanced teaching assistants joined forces to share scholarship discussion, and recognition of merit through an organization designated a Phi Beta Kappa, which was founded in 1776 at the Col-lege of William and Mary.

In 1926 the California Community College Honor Society was formed under the title Alpha Gamma Sigma. It is affiliated with the National Junior College Honor Society and the Phi Beta Kappa Organization of four year institutions.

Rho Alpha Mu, the local chapter of Alpha Gamma Sigma, was formed in 1976. The Greek letters stand for RAM, the Gavilan College mascot. Eligibility for membership requires at least a 3.0 grade point average. In addition, members are required to complete ten hours of community service each semester, and participate in fundraising and other club activities.

To be eligible for life membership in Alpha Gamma Sigma, students must maintain a 3.25 grade point average in at least 60 units of college work and have been a member in good standing for at least two continuous semesters.
