We may still be at the dawn of a new year, but for Save the Mothers, our new fiscal year began some months ago. As a result our team has recently been working on preparing our Annual Report (enclosed for your perusal), and I’ve been looking back at all we have accomplished to date.

When I say “we” I want you to know that I include you! That’s because, frankly, Save the Mothers would not be here without your support and the support of others like you.

Save the Mothers is a grass roots organization. From a small circle of friends who believed in our vision (when we launched in 2005)—that no mother or her child should die of preventable causes—we have grown to a slightly larger circle of passionate supporters that spans countries and continents. But you might be surprised to learn that the people who donate their time, money and resources to keep Save the Mothers going number in the hundreds, not thousands. We need every one of you and are deeply grateful for your donations, prayers, and volunteer efforts.

How do they help? They allow us to educate and cultivate East African game changers—those bold, bright, brash and creative visionaries who believe they can make a difference in and through their professions to save the lives of mothers and babies.

I think of Kenneth Oluka who began the Save the Mothers program in 2006. He is a journalist who works with an organization that publishes newspaper materials for young people in South Sudan. The paper deals with issues of safe motherhood, reducing child marriage and other vital reproductive health messages. His influence is extending to vulnerable young people desperate for this kind of material.

I’m grateful for the many donors who have contributed towards Kenneth’s education and the educations of others like him in the program. In general, students fund a large portion of their tuition costs—however there are some who need significant assistance. All students benefit from the networking program that is supported through Save the Mothers; it keeps graduates connected and advocating for safe motherhood over the long term.

We also continue to work in 9 Ugandan Hospitals through the Mother Baby Friendly Hospital program. Nearly 20,000 mothers deliver each year in these hospitals combined.

Help us to encourage and support more students and save the lives of mothers and their babies in 2016 by sending us your donation today, using the enclosed response card and envelope.

In other news, spring will soon be here, and volunteers are once again actively planning the Steps to Deliver Change walks, held Mother’s Day weekend. Consider joining them! These are fun, family events and we are seeking people to host walks in communities across North America. For more information, please contact event coordinator, Marian Ralph by email: [email protected].

If you are interested in being part of a VISION TRIP to see the work of Save the Mothers, and to observe the impact of these game changers as well as the need within the hospitals, please contact me directly ([email protected]). It will be a one-week, self-sponsored trip, which includes the potential for a short safari. The tentative dates are March 13-20 or 20-27, 2016. The trips will be subject to having adequate enrolment. It will be a life changing experience! Children (over 10) are welcome.

Regarding the Save the Mothers’ 2014–15 Annual Report (for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015): from time to time, we receive queries from interested supporters asking about the administrative overhead and promotional costs required to run our programming in East Africa. It’s important to understand that our balance sheets are not able to reflect all the funds leveraged and received by Save the Mothers within East Africa and the USA. These funds are not, therefore, included in our financial reporting. For a more in-depth explanation, please see the statement in the Annual Report titled, “An Explanation of Save the Mothers’ Balance Sheet.”

Thank you, again, for your past support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese, Executive Director, Save the Mothers.

P.S.: I am very excited about STM’s new book, due to be published this spring, called The Game Changers: True Stories about Saving Mothers and Babies in East Africa. Watch for more information about the book’s availability in our monthly e-newsletters. If you haven’t signed up for our e-newsletter yet, please do so at www.savethemothers.org so as not to miss any of our organizational news!
