WATSON: When this case began, it had been some time since I had seen Holmes. After my marriage our paths crossed less frequently, but I knew he remained at our old lodgings, buried among his books and instruments, alternating between cocaine and ambition. That he remained deeply attracted to the study of crime there was no doubt. I often noted his name in the papers, associated with cases abandoned as hopeless by the official police. SFX: MUSIC UP

WATSON: To my friend Sherlock Holmes she isalways the woman. I have seldomheard him refer to her under anyother name. In his eyes, sheeclipses and predominates the wholeof her sex. I believe his feelingsfor her were as close to love as his precise and perfectly reasoning mindwould allow.

WATSON: When this case began, it had beensome time since I had seen Holmes. After my marriage our paths crossedless frequently, but I knew heremained at our old lodgings, buriedamong his books and instruments,alternating between cocaine andambition. That he remained deeplyattracted to the study of crime therewas no doubt. I often noted his namein the papers, associated with casesabandoned as hopeless by the officialpolice.

SFX: MUSIC FADE OUT

WATSON: One Summer's night in '88, as I wasreturning from a call to a patient, Ipassed by the old door in BakerStreet.

SFX: VIOLIN SOLO UP

WATSON: I heard the strains of his violin,glanced to the open window above, and felt a keen desire to see Holmesagain. A quick knock at the door, upthe stairs, and I was in the presenceof my old friend.

SFX: VIOLIN OUT

WATSON: Hullo!

HOLMES: Watson!

WATSON: Good evening, Holmes.

HOLMES: Have a chair, will you. Wedlocksuits you. You have put on eight anda half pounds since I saw you last.

WATSON: A mere eight I think.

HOLMES: Indeed? I should say your scales needa calibration. And in practice againI see! This evening's patient was bythe riverside I note.

WATSON: Ha! I should know better than toask, but how can you deduce this?

HOLMES: It is simplicity itself. A gentlemanwalks into my rooms smelling ofiodoform, with the black mark ofsilver nitrate on his rightforefinger, and a bulge in his leftovercoat pocket where he has secretedhis stethoscope ... Ah, Watson, Iwould be dull indeed not to pronouncesuch a man an active member of themedical profession.

WATSON: Bravo Holmes! But the patient ...surely --

HOLMES: There, inside your left shoe, I notefresh scrape marks at the edges ofthe sole where you have attempted toremove mud, but enough remains toidentify. By its grey color I canstate with certainty that the mud inwhich you trod is composed mostly ofcommon river silt.

WATSON: To hear you explain it, it seems soridiculously simple, Holmes. I fearmy eyes are not as good as yours.

HOLMES: You see, Watson, but you do notobserve.

WATSON: Quite so, I am afraid.

HOLMES: Well, you have arrived at anopportune moment to engage in someobservation. Have a look at thisenvelope.

WATSON: It is addressed to you here. No noteof the sender. No postmark. Handdelivered.

HOLMES: And the letter inside.

WATSON: Ah, yes. "There will call upon youtonight, at a quarter to eighto'clock, a gentleman who desires toconsult you upon a matter of importand urgency to a great house ofEurope. You are known to betrustworthy, this account we havefrom all quarters received. Be inyour chamber at that hour, and do nottake it amiss if your visitor wears amask." This is indeed a mystery,Holmes? What do you imagine itmeans?

HOLMES: I have no data yet, and it is acapital mistake to theorize beforeone has data. We must not be temptedto twist facts to suit theories. Now, apart from the message, whatdoyou deduce from the letter itself?

WATSON: It appears a man's hand. There is nosignature or monogram, so he is beingquite circumspect. By the quality ofthe paper the gentleman is presumablywell-to-do. The stock is peculiarlystrong and stiff.

HOLMES: Peculiar -- that is the very word. It is not an English paper at all. Hold it up to the light.

WATSON: I see a watermark: Eg-P-Gt. Themaker I presume.

HOLMES: Not at all.

WATSON: No?

HOLMES: No. G with the small t, a commoncontraction, stands for Gesellschaft,which is German for company. The P,of course, is for papier. Now theEg, that is most interesting. I hadto refer to the Continental Gazetteerfor that. It stands for Egria,located in Bohemia, noted for itsnumerous glass factories and papermills. So, my good man, what do youmake of that?

WATSON: The paper was made in Bohemia.

HOLMES: Precisely. And the man who wrote itis German.

WATSON: Really?

HOLMES: Yes. Note the peculiar constructionof the sentence "this account we havefrom all quarters received." NoFrenchman or Russian would havewritten that. No, only a German isso uncourteous to his verbs.

SFX: HORSE CARRIAGE APPROACHES OUTSIDE

WATSON: What else?

HOLMES: What else, indeed. Who is thisGerman, who writes upon Bohemianpaper, and prefers to wear a maskrather than show his face?

SFX: DOOR OPEN AND CLOSE (off). FOOTSTEPSAPPROACH

HOLMES: I believe we shall meet ourmysterious letter writer now.

WATSON: Shall I go then, Holmes?

HOLMES: Certainly not, Doctor. Stay whereyou are. This promises to be mostinteresting. It would be a pity foryou to miss it.

KING W: You had my note? I told you I wouldcall.

HOLMES: Pray take a seat. This is my friendand colleague, Dr. Watson, who isoccasionally good enough to help mein my cases.

KING W: You may address me as the Count VonKramm of Bohemia. I would prefer ifwe spoke alone.

HOLMES: I am sorry, but it is both of us ornone.

KING W: All right then. As this matter mayhave an influence on Europeanhistory, I must bind you both toabsolute secrecy.

HOLMES: I promise.

WATSON: And I.

KING W: You excuse please the mask. Theaugust person who employs me wisheshis agent unknown to you. And Iconfess also the title I gave is notmy own.

HOLMES: I was aware of that.

KING W: I am instructed to employ yourservices for avoiding an immensescandal ... a compromising of areigning family of Europe.

HOLMES: Am I to know the name of thisreigning family?

KING W: The matter implicates the great Houseof Ormstein, hereditary kings ofBohemia.

HOLMES: (pause) If Your Majesty, King WilhemGottsreich von Ormstein of Bohemiawould proceed to state your case,then I should be better able toadvise you.

KING W: Wha-? Ah, Mr. Holmes, they said youare clever. You are right. I am theKing! Why I should attemptconcealing it?

HOLMES: Why indeed.

KING W: You please understand, sirs, I am notaccustomed to doing such business inperson. Yet the matter ... so ... delicate ... I dare not confide it toanother. Therefore, I come incognitofrom Prauge for the purpose ofconsulting you.

HOLMES: Then, pray consult.

KING W: The facts are briefly these: Somefive years ago, during a lengthyvisit to Warsaw, I made acquaintancewith the well-known Americanadventuress Irene Adler. The name isfamiliar to you?

HOLMES: Yes. At the time the Imperial WarsawOpera prima coloratura, no doubt?

KING W: This is true.

HOLMES: Watson?

WATSON: I believe she now resides in London.

KING W: This is also true.

HOLMES: And Your Majesty became entangledwith this adventuress lady, wrote hersome compromising letters, and is nowdesirous of getting those lettersback?

KING W: Yes, but how --

HOLMES: Was there a secret marriage?

KING W: Absolutely not.

HOLMES: No legal papers or certificates?

KING W: Nein!

HOLMES: Then I fail to follow. If theseletters are produced for the purposeof blackmailing Your Majesty, how isshe to prove authenticity?

KING W: There is the writing.

HOLMES: Bah! Forgery.

KING W: My private note paper.

HOLMES: Stolen.

KING W: My own seal.

HOLMES: Imitated.

KING W: My photograph.

HOLMES: Bought.

KING W: We are both in the photograph.

HOLMES: Oh, dear! Your Majesty has indeedcommitted an indiscretion.

KING W: I was mad -- insane -- but such apassion I could not control!

HOLMES: You have compromised yourselfseriously.

KING W: I was only Crown Prince then, young,foolish ... but I tell you, no mancan resist such a beautiful andremarkable woman.

HOLMES: The photograph must be recovered.

KING W: With it she will not part.

HOLMES: Your Majesty must pay. It must bebought.

KING W: She will not sell.

HOLMES: Stolen, then.

KING W: Twice attempted. Once her luggagediverted. Nothing. Burglars ransackher London house. More nothing!

HOLMES: Do you know what she proposes to dowith the photograph?

HOLMES: And how, precisely?

KING W: In three months I wed ClotildeLothman von Saxe-Meningen, seconddaughter of the King of Scandinavia. A marriage such as this ... myconduct ... a mere shadow of doubtwould end the matter.

HOLMES: Are you sure she has yet to use thephotograph?

KING W: I am sure.

HOLMES: And why?

KING W: Because she said it would be sent tocertain newspapers on the day myengagement is proclaimed to thepublic. That will be Monday.

HOLMES: Oh, then we have three days yet. That is very fortunate as I have oneor two matters of importance to lookinto just at present.

KING W: But I --

SFX: CHAIR SCRAPE FLOOR

HOLMES: Your Majesty is staying in London?

KING W: Yes. At the Langham by the nameCount Von Kramm.

HOLMES: I shall drop a line to let you knowhow we progress.

KING W: Could you not attend to this matterpresently?

HOLMES: I am sorry, no. But in due time,Your Majesty. And as to money?

KING W: For the photograph, I would give aprovince.

HOLMES: For present expenses.

SFX: SOUND OF BAG OF COINS STRIKING TABLE

HOLMES: And the mademoiselle's address?

KING W: Briony Lodge in St. John's Wood.

SFX: DOOR OPENS

HOLMES: Good night, Your Majesty, you shallhere from us shortly.

KING W: I anxiously await news, sir.

SFX: DOOR CLOSES

WATSON: One thousand pounds, Holmes!

HOLMES: Hmm? Ah, yes. Well, Watson, I havesome matters to attend to. If youwould be so kind as to return heretomorrow at three o'clock. Therewill be a task for us to accomplish.

WATSON: (fade out) Why, of course, I shallsee you tomorrow ...

SFX: MUSIC BRIDGE

4 4INT. BAKER STREET SITTING ROOM -- AFTERNOON

SFX: CLOCK CHIMES FOUR O'CLOCK

WATSON: (to self) Late again, Holmes?

SFX: FAST FOOTSTEPS UP STAIRS AND DOOROPENS

HOLMES: Ah, Watson! Sorry to keep youwaiting, but I have had quite theadventure. I am sure you cannotguess how I have employed my timetoday!

WATSON: By your interesting choice of dress,I can see that you have beenportraying one of your characters ...for the purpose of watching thehabits and house of Miss Adler, Isuspect.

HOLMES: Quite right! But the sequel wasrather unusual, as I am sure you willagree. I left this morning in thecharacter of a stableman out of work. There is a wonderful comraderie amonghorse men. Be one of them and youwill know all there is to know.

: *I soon found Briony Lodge, a bijouvilla, garden at back, built out infront to the road, two stories, largesitting room to the right. Chubblock to the door, but preposterouswindow fasteners which a child couldopen.

: *I then strolled down to the mews andthere lent a hand to the othercarriage and stablemen, rubbing downthe horses, for which I received inexchange twopence, two fills of shagtobacco, and as much information as Icould desire about Miss Adler, to saynothing of a half dozen other peoplein the neighborhood in whom I wascompletely unintersted.

WATSON: And what of Irene Adler?

HOLMES: To the men of the mews she is thedaintiest thing under a bonnet onthis planet. She lives quietly,sings at concerts, drives out at fiveevery day, and is home at seven sharpfor dinner. Seldom goes out in theevening unless it is to sing.

WATSON: Not quite the adventuress King Wilhemdescribed.

HOLMES: She has only one male visitor, but agood deal of him. He often callstwice a day, never less than once. He is the lawyer Godfrey Norton ofTemple. See the advantages of thecabman as a confidant?

WATSON: Indeed. But the involvement of alawyer in this matter sounds ominous,Holmes.

HOLMES: My thoughts exactly at the time. What was the relationship betweenthem and what is the object of hisrepeated visits? Had she transferredthe photograph to his keeping? I wasin this line of reasoning when ...Ah, I fear I bore you with details,Watson.

WATSON: Not at all! Pray continue.

HOLMES: It was just prior to noon, and over apipe, I sat contemplating turning myattention to the gentleman's rooms inTemple, when a hansom arrived. Agentleman sprang out, calling for thecabman to wait. He did knock at thedoor, but then brushed past the maidwho opened it with the air of a manwho is thoroughly at home.

WATSON: Mr. Norton.

HOLMES: Yes. He was in the house about halfan hour and then emerged in more of aflurry than before. He called to thedriver: "I must be at the Church ofSt. Monica in the Edgeware Roadwithin thirty minutes. But first toRegent Street."

: *Away they went. I wondered if Iwould do well to follow him, when upthe lane came a neat little carriage,with the coachman's coat but halfbuttoned. Why, it hadn't even cometo a stop before she shot out thedoor and darted into it. "The Churchof St. Monica, John, as fast as youdare!" she cried.

: *This was quite too good to lose,Watson. I dashed over to the streetand saw an empty cab. Before thedriver could object to such a shabbyfare, I jumped in and promised theman half a sovereign if he reachedthe church in less than twentyminutes.

WATSON: My word!

HOLMES: My cabbie drove fast. I don't thinkI ever drove faster, but still theothers were there before us. I paidthe driver and hurried into thechurch. There was not a soul theresave the two whom I had followed anda clergyman at the altar. I quicklysat in a pew and bowed my head, likeany idler who had dropped intochurch. Suddenly, to my surprise,the three turned and looked towardme.

WATSON: No!

HOLMES: Godfrey Norton then came runningtowards me shouting, "You! Youthere!" And before I could duck outthe door, he had me by the arm.

WATSON: Holmes!

HOLMES: I, too, thought my plans seriouslymenaced, that I had been recognized,but no! By the arm I was pulled upthe aisle, Norton proclaiming "Come,man, we've only three minutes!"

WATSON: Three minutes?

HOLMES: What came next was a blur to me. Theclergyman, now evidently satisfiedwith the participants, then proceededto marry Irene Adler and GodfreyNorton. It was done in an instant. There I stood, Watson, a handsomegentleman on one side, shaking myhand, a very beautiful lady on theother thanking me profusely, and aclergyman beaming in front of me. Myarrival, it seems, just saved Mr.Norton from dashing out to the streetin search of a best man to witnessthe marriage! As we left the church,the new bride said, "I shall returnto Briony and see you at the park atfive." Mr. Norton then left.

HOLMES: The lovely Mrs. Norton then presentedme with this gold coin in thanks formy service. I intend to wear it onmy watch chain in memory of the mostpreposterous afternoon I ever havespent!

WATSON: This is a very unexpected turn ofaffairs, I must say.

HOLMES: Yes, but it simplifies the matter ofthe photograph.

WATSON: In what way?

HOLMES: The photograph is double edged now. Its publication would only risk herhappy marriage, too.

WATSON: Then the King has nothing to fear.

HOLMES: Perhaps not for the immediate timebeing, but there is always the chanceof future demands. Therefore, I havedevised a way to retrieve it from herhouse this very day.

WATSON: Her house was searched by the King'sagents.

HOLMES: Pshaw! They did not know where tolook.

WATSON: But you know.

HOLMES: I will not look.

WATSON: No?

HOLMES: She will show me.

WATSON: Surely she will refuse.

HOLMES: She will not be able to. Now, Idesire only some cold beef and aglass of beer. Afterwards I havesome arrangements to see to, and Icould use your assistance, Doctor.

WATSON: I shall be delighted.

HOLMES: You don't mind breaking the law andrisking arrest?

WATSON: (fade out) I will be there ...

SFX: MUSIC BRIDGE

5 5EXT. BRIONY LODGE -- EVENING

SFX: CARRIAGE TO STOP

WATSON: (off) If you could wait here, my goodfellow, I shall be back shortly.

HOLMES: Watson! This way, we have but a fewmoments.

SFX: FOOTSTEPS

WATSON: Holmes! You're dressed as aclergyman?

HOLMES: An inspired choice given thisafternoon's events. You have thepackage?

WATSON: Yes, of course.

HOLMES: Good. Everything is arranged. We butawait the imminent arrival of MissAdler, ah, Madame Norton. NowWatson, there will be some commotion,perhaps some slight unpleasantness,but you must not interfere, youunderstand?

WATSON: I am to be neutral?

HOLMES: To do nothing whatever. When it hasended, I shall be conveyed into thehouse. At this time positionyourself -- there -- at the base ofthe window.

HOLMES: Inside I will ask for air to clear myhead, and the window will be openedwide. In your pocket you have a self-igniting plumber's smoke rocket. Pullthe cap, toss the rocket into theroom, and shout a warning of fire. Others will quickly join in and carryforward the alarm, while you returnto the top of the lane and await myarrival. I hope I have made myselfclear?

WATSON: Perfectly. You may rely on mecompletely.

SFX: CARRIAGE APPROACHING LOW

HOLMES: Excellent! I hear the lady'scarriage. I must prepare for myrole.

WATSON: I am still in the dark.

HOLMES: It is no mystery, my friend. You ofcourse saw that everyone on thestreet was an accomplice?

WATSON: I guessed as much.

HOLMES: When her carriage came down the lane,I stepped close and improvised beingstruck. The cries of the crowdreinforced the deception. I felldown, and played injured. It is acommon trick used to extort moneyfrom the gullible. But dressed inthe clothes of a common clergyman,who would doubt?

WATSON: No one.

HOLMES: I was carried in to the sitting roomand asked for air. When the windowwas opened you had your chance.

WATSON: Yes, but I thought it was to providedistraction, a diversion while yousearched for the photograph.

HOLMES: Not at all. When a woman fears herhouse afire, she will rush to thething she values most. A mothergrabs at her baby, a young woman herjewel case. And our adventuress,Irene Norton, rushes to retrieve ...

WATSON: The photograph!

HOLMES: The photograph. Exactly. In themidst of the smoke and shouting, sheresponded beautifully. I watched herclosely. Her eyes darted to the bell-pull beside the fireplace mantle. Asshe moved towards it, the carriagedriver interceded and hurried herfrom the room. I then had my chance.

I had barely time tohide it in my breast pocket when thedriver returned to assist me, thepoor injured vicar. I think he wasquite surprised as I ran right pasthim and out the front door.

WATSON: Well done, Holmes! The King will bepleased.

HOLMES: Yes, he will. Our work is nearlycomplete, Watson.

SFX: CARRIAGE SLOWS

DRIVER: (off) The Langham, gentleman.

SFX: CARRIAGE STOPS, PASSENGERS DISEMBARK

HOLMES: Here you are driver.

SFX: CARRIAGE STARTS AND FADES

HOLMES: I have sent word ahead that we wouldbe here with news for Count VonKramm. I suspect we --.

SFX: FOOTSTEPS UP

VOICE 2: Good-night, Mister Sherlock Holmes.

WATSON: Who was that gentleman?

KING W: But she could not love him.

HOLMES: I am in hopes that she does.

KING W: Why?

HOLMES: Because a woman who loves her husbanddoes not love Your Majesty andtherefore is not likely to interferewith any of Your Majesty's futureplans.

KING W: Yes, I see. If she had only been ofmy station. What a queen she wouldhave made. May I have thephotograph?

HOLMES: Of course.

IRENE: (fade up) Sherlock Holmes. Allow meto commend your performance. Untilthe alarm of fire, I was taken incompletely. You had done so well,that I admit, I did nearly betraymyself ... but at the last moment, Imanaged to restrain my impulses.

: *Remember, I too am an actress, andafter I noted your keen observationof my actions, I engaged in a littleplay acting, just as you had done, todivert your attention where I wished.

: *Then as I stood outside my house, Iwondered if you had been misled, andif you had found what you thought wasthe desired item.

: *Well, I did not wait long before thepoor, injured vicar came racingthrough the front door and up thelane ... a most miraculous healing Imust say!

: *I then returned home, penned thisnote, and left to meet my husband andembark this very night on ourhoneymoon. Therefore, when youarrive, you will find the nest empty.
