THE DETROIT FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

The Detroit Festival of the Arts was on shaky ground forawhile in the wake of the "Attack on America" hitting in NewYork, and Washington DC. Many entertainment acts had tobe cancelled, and the entire festival was in danger of beingcancelled. The Detroit Council for the Arts and the artists gottogether and pulled it through. And the Show went on asplanned. It was what was needed to show that we have theAmerican Spirit to go on in the face of this devastatingtragedy. The Scarab Club bustled as a steady stream of people cameto visit—It can be likened to a Noel Night. People askedabout the Club, check out the number of new members. Many Scarab members were there to welcome the people, take them on a tour of the Club, and to give them informationabout the Club.(7 was very impressed with how the members showed off their"Jewel of the Cultural Center.")

JIM SLACK MEMORIAL: "Post-Mortem"Jim Slack's retroactive works are on exhibition at the BiddleGallery in Wyandotte. The Scarab Club should schedule atrip to this exhibition—every artist needs to see these works! His work is beyond belief—that we have had a master artistliving amongst us and never knew it. His work is incredible! It is emotional, passionate, inspiring, tragic, even humorous, and you will NEVER see anything like it in your lifetime. Hewas such a prolific artist that all of his works would have tobe displayed in a huge warehouse size gallery. He was agenius! He kept illustrated Journals and bound 4 inch high11X14 Sketchbooks that contained drawings, paintings, writ-ings and poetry. In one particular sketch journal there is a colorful paintingwith the following untitled poem on the page beside it:

Lef's pretend this isa Landscape.Let's pretend those paintsmudges are trees.Let's pretend those squigglesare bushes.Let's pretend the pencil marksare birds.Let's pretend those red stainsare clouds.Let's pretend I 'm an artist.Let's pretend you're anaudience.Let's pretend this is aLandscape. But paint can neversmell like flowersAnd a critic can onlypretend to pretend.
