The challenges of a poverty / survival mindset on our economy and communities.

While quality education and training is an important part of empowering a new generation, Jirah’s approach is

to address the needs of the whole person. It is from the “wholeness” of a person’s identity that they are able

to legislate their lives and make responsible productive choices and impact society in a meaningful way.

The effects of poverty are broad and touch on many facets of life. Poverty impacts negatively in the way

young people think and that becomes their paradigm unless they acquire a new mindset. While some people

place the emphasis on poverty or lack, we at Jirah focus on mindsets rather than circumstances. History is

filled with testimonies of people that were born into poverty and changed there thinking or perspective and

rose above their circumstances. Poverty thinking leaves people living far below their potential. Poverty causes

people to focus on issues of survival rather than personal development.

In many cases when our youth are given an opportunity or second chance to get educated and qualified, they

often drop-out because of pressing financial challenges in the home that force them to work as casual and

semi skilled laborers.

A poverty mindset has a negative affect on a persons:

• Sense of identity, self-worth and ability to achieve;

• Roles and responsibilities and the ability to self-regulate;

• Understanding of personal reward linked to sacrifice;

• Understanding of jobs verses careers;

• Understanding of quality productivity in relation to time utility and money earned;

• Understanding of co-operation and problem solving skills within a people orientated value system;

• Understanding and ability to be objective.

Benefits to the learners:

Provides a nurturing environment for those living in dysfunctional homes and communities.

Provides accommodation for learners from outlaying areas and other provinces to be included in the

Trade School service.

Provides security for those who cant join the project or drop out of the project because they need to

earn an income as part-time semi and unskilled laborers in order to survive.

Provides a nurturing environment for those who are orphaned or come from single parent and social

grant households.

Provides a structured living environment under our military/mentoring/ whole person ethos.

Benefits to Industry:

Many companies have divisions, plants or outlets in various areas and provinces that are sometimes at a

distance from quality mainstream education and training. Our Boarding Home service will allow companies to

include learners from outlaying communities where companies operate and register them into Jirah Academy -

Trade School. This will add tremendous value to companies Further Education and Training portfolio and CSI

responsibilities within those outlaying communities. The learners will not only benefit from our unique Trade

School approach, but will also benefit from a life changing experience of spending 2 years under our Boarding

Home ethos.

The costs of running the Boarding Home is 100% tax deductible through our section 18 A PBO status. Monthly

stipend costs can be largely offset towards the cost of accommodating the learners.

Project partners:
