I hope for my graduate collection to be

viewed as an exhibition. It is a halt in

time, to capture and re-tell memories

that are held within clothing. I have

specifically placed focus on personal

family stories since the Chinese Cultural

Revolution (1966-1976). The collection

objectifies and presents the experiences

of three generations within my family: from

my Popo (paternal Chinese grandmother) to

my Baba (father), and also me.

I have designed garments which cross

classical fashion boundaries, steering

from what usual connotations of ‘fashion’

are, and instead functioning across both

commercial and non-commercial contexts.

The collection should be appreciated as

a build-up of memories and experiences

coming together with the present in

both wearable and scultpural ways; to be

appreciated whether it is on a living and

moving body or not.

Rather than designing in full looks,

I have experimented with designing in

single garments, drawing on tracing

paper and manually layering and

piecing the single designs together.

Working in this way allowed for varied

compositions, and meant that I could

play around with layering different

pieces together in numerous ways.

This method also resonates with how

I personally dress and style myself,

making the designing process more

personal to me. Rather than thinking

about my personal dress sense as

‘looks’, I prefer to jigsaw my clothes

together in a different way to how I

wore it previously. I want to encourage

individuals to pick and select garments

to style in a personal way.

In order to address my collection’s life after construction,

I have considered the impact of transporting it to another

space through creating a online exhibition platform: linking

a digital space to my process portfolio will carry the

relevance of documentation and human interaction with my

collection relevant in future years to come.

The popularity and dominance of QR codes being used in daily

life is ever-increasing, particularly in China, whereby almost

anything can be controlled with a mobile phone. Linking

elements of my collection process to a wider digital space

through just the scan of a code would be a way for the viewer

to have a personal connection with my exhibition. These

codes could be situated at the bottom of portfolio pages

and next to images or text. Individuals could then be taken

through am intensified journey of more in-depth and detailed

explanations, whilst being able to manoeuvre the digital

space in any location or time.

As a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, our degree catwalk

show was cancelled. Creating a QR code that could take viewers

into a VR space would be fascinating. It would provide an

opportunity for my garments to be seen on a body in motion.

Perhaps there could even be a way for the garments to be

placed onto photographs or videos of these individuals, so

that a personal connection can be built to juxtapose such a

socially fragmented time.

creating a virtual space to link to my
