A Snapshot Analysis of Caltech’s Hazardous Waste Stream

June 23, 2009
April 6, 2009 – June 22, 2009
IntroductionThe EHS Office collects all hazardous waste tags from April 6, 2009 to June 22, 2009. The tags are sorted in order to determine the following:
• The amount of tagged hazardous waste collected
•The volume of waste generated by division
Collection Method
• All tags were collected from April 6, 2009 and June 22, 2009 by Caltech’s EHS Technicians– One Lab Pack and Approximately Six Solvent Runs
• Quantity was noted by staff if it was expressed as a percentage by the end user
• All tags were routed to Karen for analysis
Solvent Runs vs. Lab Packs
• A Solvent Run is a pick up of all consolidated flammable solvents and any pre-profiled hazardous waste that is ready to be taken
• A Lab Pack is done when all hazardous waste from the 90 Day Storage Facility is packed and shipped by our hazardous waste subcontractor

Limitations
• Some waste collected on Lab Pack days are not captured because they are “forgiveness” cleanouts
• Waste volume is at best an estimate by either the end user or EHS Technician
• First two weeks of collection had spotty compliance with respect to quantity notation
