Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane as he “waits” before those who accuse him, taunt him and finally crucify him. It’s in times of passivity and passion, Vanstone shows us, that real spiritual growth happens. In a pocket at the end of the book you’ll find a copy of an essay written shortly before the death of Dame Cicely Saun-ders, founder of the modern hospice movement, and expressed the meaning and relevance the book had for her life, especially when she became a patient at St. Christopher’s Hospice: The main message of the book is an integral part of my thinking: that receiving and being passive in life is as important as being active. Too often we think of the dependent—the unemployed, the disabled, and the sick – as not worthy because they aren’t active. I am reminded of this as I am faced with the physical hampering of my disease, being confined to bed or a wheelchair, as well as the pain. Vanstone brings meaning to the status of dependence.

volunteer spotlight—march 2018 This month I would like to note our nimble-fingered members of the St. Francis Needlework Guild. These saints-of-the needle meet on the 2nd Monday of each month to knit/crochet prayer shawls, hats, scarves, baby blankets and caps for con-gregation members and those in need from the Shepherd’s Table, Rex Hospital, Wake Medical Center and the Christmas at Sea Project of the Seaman’s Institute. Those contributing to this group include: Betty Dietz, Jane Hawkins, Kathy Mac-Leod, Jackie May, Debbie Mills, Mary Norris, May Sherrod, Jennifer Tlusty, Meriwether Walker, Bonnie Wheeler and Lynn Wiss. In addition, the group meets at Bonnie’s home, May takes care of emailing the group and Meriwether handles the finished items for a blessing and distribution. I think it’s always nice to have our volunteers recognized for all they do. There may be times I miss someone, and I apologize up front !! My knowledge is limited to those who have volunteered for things I have set up, to names given to me by the coordinator. Thanks to ALL of you that do things for others with no thought of any-thing in return !! You don’t know how you have touched others hearts and changed their lives for the better !!! Hugs to all !!
