PASTOR’S CORNER
Friends,
In preparation for this column, I did an internet search for “most popular children’s Halloween costumes Among the many lists I found were plenty of superheroes and Disney characters; a good number of the classics (nurse, firefighter, etc.,) which
are now grouped as “first responders”; and some of the old stand-bys (soldier, cowboy, and yes, the ever-easy white sheet for a ghost). With all but the last, I am not seeing the concern raised often in recent years that celebrating Halloween is merely a veiled plot to lure our kids into devil-worship and the occult. Even with a Casper the Friendly Ghost costume, I am not seeing these as the last step before needing to call in an exorcist.
Please don’t get me wrong. I do believe that there are many things in our world which try to subtly convince us that the works of the devil and the presence of evil are merely superstitious tropes of ages past. But a child dressing up like Captain America or a doctor, might not be the way that Lucifer is working today.
We also need to understand the origins, history, and purpose of celebrating All Hallows Eve (aka Hallowe’en) as the vigil to our celebrations of All Saints and All Souls Days. University professor and Dominican priest, Fr. Augustine Thompson, once opened a column on the subject clearly stating that. “Halloween’s origins are, in fact, very Christian. Halloween falls on October 31 because of a Pope, and its observances are the result of medieval Catholic piety.”
With All Saints Day being the celebration of all the souls already in heaven, and All Souls Day being a remembrance of all those in purgatory, Fr. Thompson tells us that the Irish in particular were inclined to remember and pity the souls which may have been damned to hell. “After all, if the souls in hell are left out when we celebrate those in heaven and purgatory, they might be unhappy enough to cause trouble. So it became customary to bang pots and pans on All Hallows Eve to let the damned know they were not forgotten.”
In the Middle Ages, Catholic faithful would visit churches and shrines to honor the saints, and then go to cemeteries and mausoleums to remember the souls in purgatory. Many would honor saints, heroes, and ancestors by wearing the garb of their lives and their times in history. Even the giving of treats is traced back to begging at the doors to churches or gates to cemeteries, or even going home to home, asking for a small bit of food in exchange for a promise to pray for the deceased loved ones of the givers.
It is in the melting pot of America that, like other holidays and Holy Days, the traditions of varied cultures and ethnic groups have been blended together into much of what we do now for Halloween and the holy days which follow. Most of this is fine for celebration by the children. But all should give equal consideration to honoring and celebrating all the faithful souls who have gone before us and praying for the souls in purgatory or hell.
The last thing to mention in our considerations of All Hallows Eve, All Saints, and All Souls Days, is that we should all take seriously these reminders of mortality. There is a Latin phrase “memento mori” which means “remember your death.” We don’t do this to be morbid or to allow fear to well up within us. Rather, we remember the fact of our impending death so that we might properly live and make the most of the lifetime we have and to increase our attentive trust that Christ’s Resurrection was for all of us a victory over death.
So, let the children celebrate Halloween, and then let the family celebrate All Saints Day (a Holy Day of Obligation) and All Souls Day.
Blessings to all.
