Juliet Cullinan is one of the world’s most respected wine promoters, a visual taster and host to the oldest and most exclusive festival in South Africa. Her first festival, 29 years ago, was a watershed moment for wine enthusiasts and marked the beginning of some of her unprecedented firsts.

A member of both the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, the exclusive Burgundian society of only 12,000 world wide members and The Ordre des Côteaux de Champagne - the official Champagne fraternity, possibly one of the very few people to be inducted into both.

Having embarked on her career as the first female wine journalist in Johannesburg, her knowledge of wine styles, oenological techniques, local and international regions and wine craftmanship has gained her recognition across the globe from South Africa to New York, London and Europe. Juliet’s passion for the vine, took all the snobbery out of wine and made it accessible to everyone. Her definitive voice and views on early Cape winemaking techniques and contemporary styles have earned her the respect of connoisseurs the world over.She has made wine accessible through her artistic interpretations of tastes and aromas. In 2005 she launched the first wine images depicting the flavours found in grape varieties. A wine glass filled with the distinctive flavours of a “New World vintage” with bouquets of fruit, flowers or spices of each.

Juliet has designed wine symbols to visually describe the structure of wine, without having to write tasting notes out in longhand, which she launched at the 2005 Gourmet Voice in Cannes.

In 2009 she created the first Google Vineyard Streetviews using South Africa’s top wineries. She went on to work with Google creating the first Virtual Reality wine tour using Google’s innovative 3D Glasses for guests seated on Vesper scooters at the 2017 festival.

She introduced QR codes with links to the wineries on the Monte Carlo Wine & Business Club 2011 catalogue; redefined wine as a fine art, by matching varietal wines to paintings from the Standard Bank private collection and created the first bespoke bread and wine pairings using flavours found in wine as ingredients in the 2006 “Decorex Bread and Wine tasting”.

This years Juliet uncorks new ‘made-to-measure’ wine wheels: fact-filled reference discs defining grape varieties and fruit flavours, that slip around the stem of a tasting glass.

They are a quick reference to show tasters what to look for and flavours to expect.

The 2019 Festival brings together "the old school classist (older generation) and the “new school” contemporary wine taster (millennial). Each with their own views and taste preferences, both contributing to the style of Cape winemakers’ wines of today and harvests of tomorrow. “Our Wine Wisdom Workshops offered at the Juliet Cullinan Standard Bank Wine Festival this year are tailored for both the experts and the influencer”, says the First Lady of Wine.

Wine is not a one-size-fits-all approach and it takes a personal connection. This year our guests can view the catalogue online and design their own personalised tasting sheet.

Newman Sigoga, sommelier at the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton, will be guiding you through your tasting. In his words, “I grew up in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, where in my experience, wine was only served in hotels and restaurants. The concept of wine and the appreciation thereof was foreign to me - a mystery! Coming to South Africa in 2009 was a watershed moment. Although very few people in the townships drink wine, I discovered the culture of wine. I’m studying for my Cape Wine Masters and my dream is to open a wine shop in the future.”

Steve Steinfeld better known as "The Joburg Foodie," to 40k strong social media followers over the past 4 years, showcases the countries finest food & wine events. His effervescent passion for wine spurred Steve to completing his WSET level 2 course & launching The Joburg Foodie’s Seriously Good Wine Society - "the" wine club for a younger generation wishing to drink seriously good wine without taking themselves too seriously. Targeting young at heart 25-35 year olds who enjoy epic tastings, meeting winemakers and scoring some pretty great deals!

A TASTE OF SOMETHING NEW - COMING FULL CIRCLE

Introducing a new era of mutual understanding between the generations was the motivation behind my development of wine wheels - fact-filled, easy reference mandalas peppered with flavourful possibilities, that work in varying combinations for everyone.

Both ‘old school’ classists and ‘new school’ contemporary tasters, contribute to the style of flavours designed for the wines of today and harvests of tomorrow. There are no rights or wrongs here, only explorations of the nuances.

Over the years I’ve learnt, however, that trying to tell people of any generation how to live their lives or enjoy their wines, is futile. They will ignore you. And rightly so. Different tactics and techniques are called for when it comes to the fruits of youthfulness, especially those living under the yoke of varsity budget constraints. I wanted to let them experience for themselves how a fine wine can encapsulate the sensation of eating warm plums in summertime.

An upbringing that introduces vinicultural concepts from an early age is my personal ideal. My familial memories are dappled with sunshine and toasted in good wines stored in dark cellars for perfect maturation. My father and grandfather instilled in me the old-school art of tasting by uncorking the bottle ahead of time to ‘breathe’. They chose ideal venues, paired fish with white wine, and steak with reds. They relished the analytical approach - sniffing, swirling around the palate; assessing the soils, grapes, region, age and cellar master skills.

The Romantic Manifesto ‒ an emotional connection thetaster makes the moment the wine is sipped ‒ is thegolden thread that binds them all.

The Contemporary Quaffer:The millennial wine drinker lives in the moment, sampling flavours as they arise, without preconceived expectation.

Impulsive, visual, dynamic, engaging several senses at once, the contemporary quaffer rapidly texts, takes pics, tweets, and posts on social media in between engaging with others irl (in real life). Not for them the cosy tête-à-tête!

A TASTE OF SOMETHING NEW -COMING FULL CIRCLE

Screw caps or corks? Dark green or transparent bottles? Who cares? Contemporary quaffers are less analytical, more experimental, and, for them, instagrammability is key. That’s why they seek photographic perfection and style – that perfectly designed glass, bottle, label or signature –over the ideal flavour of the grapes.

So long as there’s visual personality - a gourmet picnic hamper, silk fabrics or flowers providing a measure of class and photographic potential to the newly launched wine, they’re happy.

The Classical QuafferWhile both generations have romantic connections to the taste in the glass, experience, memory and personal tasting history come into play here.

Expecting certain definite flavours, tastes, and maturation from the wine, the classical quaffer looks at the label, country, terroir (climate, soils and slope aspect) grape varietal, oak maturation, and the age in the bottle.

While a wine may surprise the Classicist palate or nose with its weight, depth, elegance, flavour and age, preconceived expectations based on knowledge and experience, are generally met.

QUEEN OF THE TASTEVIN

Juliet Cullinan describes her induction into les Confrérie des

Chevaliers, a knighthood of wine kinship, at the Château du

Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy’s Cote d’Or region.

On 5 May this year, one of my lifelong dreams bore fruit when

the Chevaliers du Tastevin, a vinaceous fraternity that pledges

allegiance to Burgundy invited me to join their aspirational

society.

With only 12 000 members world-wide selected on merit,

talent, lively conversation, and dedication to the vine, I could

barely breathe with excitement during the intense build-up

to the exclusive banquet where I would be invited to join this

society of vintage distinction.

Crested envelopes with the franked confrérie logo from

Beaune brought news of my induction and seating plans on

elegant textured paper. A separate card printed with images

of the dress code made it clear that “black tie and long evening

dresses is obligatory”.

The deep guttural moan of French horns blown by huntsmen

in jackets, jodhpurs, and black boots heralded our arrival to

the impressive 12th Century Château du Clos de Vougeot,

where its 50 hectares of vineyards planted by Cistercian

monks continues to make the famous Clos de Vougeot Grand

Cru.

We sip locally-made Crémant de Bourgogne and introduce

ourselves. Low heeled shoes are preferable in these cobbled

courtyards and I joined the other guests in all their finery, sporting the silver saucer-shaped tasting cups that identify

members. The colours of the ribbon representing Burgundy’s

red and white wines. Voluble greetings and eager discussions

on food and wine are heard before we approach the original

centuries-old wooden wine press for the prestigious gathering.

French Horn players and court jesters dressed in red, green,

and yellow serenade the guests with stirring traditional

music as the Grand Conseil of Chevaliers in gold-trimmed

red academic gowns and flat caps fashioned after the attire of 16th-century theologians, with the tastevin as their symbol

perform the Gallic ceremonies.

As the chevaliers introduce me and say the Juliet Cullinan

Standard Bank Wine Festival in French, I take a second to savour the delicious moment of being the first South African woman to be publicly honoured in this way.

I was knighted in honour of wine saints with an 84-year-old petrified grapevine root kissed on both cheeks, signed my name with a feathered pen and finally the coveted red and gold ribbon was bestowed upon me.

Experiencing all the pomp and circumstance, I consider

it ironic that this elite fellowship was formed during the

economic crisis in 1934, when Camille Rodier and Georges

Faiveley invited their friends to Nuits-Saint-Georges for an

unforgettable banquette with a gallant welcome.

The epitome of French appreciation for gastronomy, each

chapter pledges to honour and promote Burgundian, produce

her great wines and tourism. An Impressionist Utrillo painting

is just one of many awe-inspiring works of art, tapestries, and

sculptures on display.

A procession of waitrons bearing traditional fare on silver

platters serve the six-course, silver-service dinner to 500

guests. Dishes and wines are amusingly described as we all

sing traditional songs with by Les Cadets de Bourgogne, the

Burgundy folk singers, in traditional dress featuring

beards, flat black caps, and operatic voices might have been the same men who sang in those early days. We laugh, and

revel in the array of gourmet dishes and wines interspersed

with toasts, and more wine, amid more trumpeting and French

horns.

I'm privileged to be part of this brotherhood with its rituals

and ceremonial traditions of a bygone era. Promoting wine

and gourmet dishes in honour of my tastevin is exactly what I

intend to continue doing!
