SOMETIMES, WHEN BUYING SOMETHING, you can getmore than you bargained for! Just ask Kelly Hotchkiss andJanet Staite. When they purchased their property on the F&GLine, there was an ‘extra’ or two thrown in for good measure,- extras such as a wonderful old workshop/garage building ashort distance from the house. The old building containedanother unique bonus: an oldsafe!
Kelly’s and Janet’s new home, you see, was built on the siteof the former MacFarlaneSawmill, which was the firstmill on the Island to be pow-ered by publicly-generatedelectricity. The old edifice, thought to be the office, wasthe last surviving buildingfrom those days. When themill ceased operations in themid-1950’s, the propertypassed into the hands of anAmerican couple, Elmer andGladys Crane. On buying theproperty, they also inheritedthe mill’s safe, which was leftbehind in the former office. That safe, which is some sixfeet high, five feet wide andfive feet deep and embeddedin the concrete floor, wasgoing nowhere!
Over the years, the property’sowners are thought to havetried, without success, to break
the combination or break into the safe. Perhaps some did andthe last owner had even tried to sell it online to whoeverwanted to try opening it, but there were no takers. Its buildershad done a thorough job, except … they didn’t count onKelly Hotchkiss coming along!
Although neither a lock-smith nor a safecracker,Kelly has strong tradesskills, particularly as amillwright, as well as aninquiring, logical mindand a LOT of patience! “Allin all, it took me a littleover 2 months and many, many sheets of notes, tocrack the combination.” hesmiled. “but I DID havesome help!” He demurelydeclined to offer details, but shares that he did havethe benefit of an old cardcontaining what wasthought to be the combi-nation to the mysteriousvault … but wasn’t.
It may not have been theactual combination but itdid offer a good startingpoint. “We had what wasthought to be a three-number combination, butit wasn’t. It was FOURnumbers in a completely

different sequence.” he explained. “Ihad to listen for the tiny, almost in-audible click of the 4th number, which took some doing. I also real-ized that, given the age of the safe, thetumblers themselves would probablyhave become worn over the years, complicating matters even further.”
The safe is thought to have been builtcirca 1855 and hasn’t been openedsince the early 1970s. Kelly’s researchthen gave him an even stronger moti-vation to not get it wrong: “Althoughdesigned to be as unbreakable as pos-sible, these safes often contain whatwas called a ‘Safecracker’s Nightmare’in behind the locking mechanism. It’sa nasty surprise for a safecracker whomight be able to force the outer doors- a surprise like a glass cyanide cap-sule or less lethally, a faceful of teargas!”
“When I finally did get it open, theshock! My heart was pounding in my
chest!” he recounted. Afterclosely examining the internalmechanisms, mostly solid brass,he carefully and meticulouslycleaned the parts, then, havingfound the lock key inside, re-closed and locked the door.“Are you nuts?!” we screamed.“What if you couldn’t open itagain?” Kelly hadn’t been wor-ried, confident that he hadtaken his time and done every-thing carefully and correctly, and he was right. He oh-so-carefully dialed the combina-tion again, then inserted the keyand voila! The safe opened onceagain, as smoothly as silk.“Then I changed the combina-tion to one of my own making.”he grinned.
“So tell us!” we begged. “Whatwas in the safe? Were there bagsof gold, diamonds, jewellery
and cash? Secret codes? Or was it just empty? C’mon, tell us!

We won’t tellanybody!” weurged and ca-joled. Kellymerely smiled, exchangedamused glanceswith Janet andthen … openedthe doors.
What lay insidewas indeed abountiful treas-ure, but of a dif-ferent sort! Thesafe, havingdone its duty forso long, had be-come a gianttime capsule! Inaddition to themill’s files fordaily operations, there were alsodetailed pettycash and payrollrecords, invoices,

ledgers, cheque books and pay stubs, many including thenames of well-known Islanders of the time. There were oldcertificates and World War II US War Bonds in the names ofseveral long-deceased people, as well as mortgage papers, birth and death records, original land deeds and much more- perhaps worth nothing monetarily now, but worth an incal-culable fortune in historical value. “We’ve talked with ourlawyer about that and we both plan to continue diggingdeeper into it all.” confided Kelly.
The safe was also a ‘safe’ haven for Elmer and Gladys Crane’spapers and memorabilia, including Elmer’s birth and deathcertificates and the Doctor’s Autopsy Report and even hiswallet, identity papers, Social Security, driver’s licence andeven – this might come as a shock to those who knew himhere – US Government and Pentagon identification.
Although Elmer and Gladys were the ‘second owners’, there isalso a thread of evidence indicating that they were friends orassociates of Robert MacFarlane before taking over and werealso involved with the running of the sawmill. Kelly and Janetwill be digging further into that story as well. There are a lotof threads upon which to pull, and they all seem to be quiteintertwined. “There’s just too much to tell!” sighed Kelly.
Elmer died in 1962 and we haven’t yet learned where he isburied, while Gladys died in 1972 and was buried in WestVirginia. She left her estate (and the safe) to her mother LeliaMae (Stevens) MacDonald, who died in 1990 at 98 years oldand is buried in Hilton Beach – the same Lelia who onceworked with – and reportedly loaned Robert MacFarlane the$5,000 he needed to start the sawmill in the first place, backin the early 1940s!
The possibilities and the until-now hidden stories of peoples’lives going back more than a hundred years - stories that havelain dormant in the old safe - are now out in the light of day, waiting to be discovered. And for that, Kelly and Janet plan toseek expert help in moving forward, working with both theIsland’s Historical Society and Museum to piece it all to-gether, fill in the blanks in the story and preserve the impor-tant documents and letters for posterity.
OLD SAFE . . . continued from page 3
Page 5
When asked if the Historical Society might be moderately interestedin helping Kelly and Janet unravel the historical windfall, PresidentBarbara Davies could barely suppress her excitement. In telling usabout when she first told her group about the possibilities of meetingand working with Kelly and Janet, she laughed “You can bet that’s onefield trip we ALL want in on!”
The Island Clippings offers its profound thanks to Janet and Kelly forsharing what will surely become the talk of the island as this fascinat-ing story unfolds. We want in on it too, Barbara!

Northerners Ripped Off by Gas Prices
ON JUNE 16TH, MPPs Gilles Bisson, (Timmins-JamesBay), Sarah Campbell ( Kenora-Rainy River), France Gelinas (Nickel Belt), Michael Mantha (Algoma-Manitoulin) and JohnVanthof (Timiskaming-Cochrane) wrote an open letter toGlenn Thibeault, Ontario Minister of Energy, demanding action on gas price gouging in Northern Ontario.
In their letter, the MPPs stated:
Dear Minister,People across Ontario, and especially the North, are beingripped off at the gas pumps.
As an opposition MP you were vocal on this issue. Now is thetime for you to act. As the Minister responsible for the OntarioEnergy Board, you should direct the OEB to monitor gas pric-ing, reduce volatility and increase competition. This is some-thing you can do today.
As every driver in Ontario knows long weekends often lead tobig spikes in gas prices. We are calling on you to act now, beforethe Canada Day long weekend.
We are also calling for a meeting at your earliest convenience todiscuss ways to get gas prices and energy prices in Northern On-tario under control.
There is something seriously wrong when Sudburians pay abovethe average 90% of the time, and when drivers in Sudbury con-

Over 15 years’ experience
sistently pay more than people in North Bay, something youhave suggested is price fixing. As you know, this isn’t unique toSudbury: all across Ontario there are communities beinggouged.
In the past you specifically highlighted the fact provinces canand should take a leading role in regulating prices and endinggouging, noting, “A way to deal with rising prices could be regu-lation, [Thibeault] added, and with that, ‘anything is on thetable... ‘There’s regulation in place in places like NewBrunswick and other Atlantic provinces where ... it’s not all of asudden going to jump on a Friday ... by five or 10 cents a litreand then drop back down on a Monday.’”
You went further, noting that “The Government needs to bringforward a system that allows consumer complaints and con-cerns to be properly heard.”
Why does this matter to people? As you, yourself, told the Sud-bury Star in November 2014,
“When they have to worry about putting another 10 bucks ingas in their car, it takes away from food on the table”
This summer, people across Ontario will be heading out on theroad to visit friends and family, go fishing, camping and enjoythe outdoors. They deserve to pay a fair and predictable pricewhen they fill their tanks.
For years you promised people you wanted to take action to getgas prices under control. Here’s your chance to act.

July marks the 8th Year Anniversary of Comedian/PhilosopherGeorge Carlin’s death. Although known mostly for his razor-sharp wit and irreverent, acid tongued comedy rants, he wasalso an astute student of the human condition. Here’s one of hismore serious works, simply entitled:
Something To PonderBy George Carlin
THE PARADOX OF OUR TIME in history is that we havetaller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but nar-rower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buymore, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller fam-ilies, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degreesbut less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more ex-perts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and praytoo seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’veadded years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way tothe moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street tomeet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but notinner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things.
We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve con-quered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, butlearn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learnedto rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to holdmore information, to produce more copies than ever, but wecommunicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big menand small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancierhouses, but broken homes.
These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwawaymorality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills thatdo everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time whenthere is much in the showroom window and nothing in thestockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter toyou, and a time when you can choose either to share this in-sight, or to just hit delete.
Remember to spend some time with your loved ones, becausethey are not going to be around forever.
Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to youin awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leaveyour side.
