This program was incorporated into the summer school program at Clinton Schools, summer 2011.

The program was designed to make students more aware of the illustrators of some of their favorite stories and the style of art that the illustrators use in their books.

The Program

Each of the three days of the program began with a book talk of a few of the books from that days author.

An artist and art teacher from town then instructed and assisted the students in applying the technique of each of the authors to their own art work.

Eric Carle creates his illustrations from painted cut-outs he collages into a scene. The students planned their scene, selected

paint colors, painted, and then cut out the scene and glued it onto their background paper.

For this program we used the method that Willems uses in the Knuffle Bunny books. In these books, simple drawings are added to a black and white photo background. The same simple drawings are also seen in the Pigeon books, except on a solid colored background. Old calendar pages

were used as the background for these projects.

Robert Sabuda is well known for his amazing pop-ups. For this day of the program we printed outlines for some of his pop-ups from his website. The students then followed the directions on

how to make each pop-up.
