How to stay warm, look great, and help

TRU avoid greenhouse gas emissions

caused by burning more natural gas

than needed to keep campus buildings

comfortable.

Layering SustainablyThe clothing choices you make affect more than just campus energy use.

Things to keep in mind:

• Think vintage: Find great deals at second hand and consignment shops.

• Ditch the dyes: Choose less dyed fabrics with natural fibers such as wool, silk, linen or organic cotton that will be more durable (avoid synthetic materials such as polyester and acrylic).

• Give your clothes a second life: Mend your clothes, shoes and apparel (take them to a tailor or cobbler for repairs). Look for opportunities to donate or re-cycle clothes. When clothes are no longer wearable, repurpose them as rags for cleaning.

• Seek recycled materials: Look for clothing made from recycled materials (like Patagonia, who has made fleece jackets made from old plastic bottles for more than 25 years!)

big test. *Cold-weather exercise tip: Avoid cotton if you plan on exercising outdoors; it actually

pulls heat away from your body if you get even a little sweaty.

Hint: If choosing down fill for this layer, be sure to look

for products certified with responsible down standard

(responsibledown.org). That way you can feel good about what’s

keeping you warm - even as you’re walking home because you missed the bus....again.
