A Study of the Spatial Distribution of Suspended
Sediments and their Settling Behaviour in the Dartmouth
Lake System
By: Lori Wrye
Supervisor: Dr. Paul Hill
Purpose of this Project
1.Understanding the recent changes in sediment input into Lake Micmac and the Shubenacadie Canal
2.Understanding the fate of fine sediments discharged into the lakes (i.e. looking at how long it takes the sediment to settle in the water column)
This project can be broken down into 2 components;
Methodology
• Sampling– Periodic collection of
suspended sediment Samples
– Event Based sampling
• Laboratory Technique– Suspended particulate
mass (SPM)– Size-specific clearance
rates

Significance
• Supervisor:– Wants to compare between fresh and
salt water sedimentation
• Society:– Important to preserve the natural lake
habitat– No one likes brown water!
