Lord’s Prayer Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray … And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.” – Luke 11:1-4 When the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray, He does not respond with comments about posture, attitude, or sentiment. Rather, Jesus provides specific words that serve as a foundation on which all Christian prayer and life is built. The Lord’s Prayer is the greatest of all prayers because our Lord Jesus Christ personally gave this prayer to the church.

How To Use This Devotion

As the disciples ask, “Lord, teach us to pray,” so we also ask Jesus to teach us to pray. Use this daily devotion (10 devotions in total) to deepen your understanding of The Lord’s Prayer and persistently pray to God for all of our needs of body and life. Each devotion includes a reading from Luther’s Small Catechism, a short Online Teaching, and a Prayer Station Activity. First, read through the Catechism Reading. Then, watch the short online teaching (from our pastors – connecting the daily reading to our lives). Finally, complete the Prayer Station Activity. This Study on the Lord’s Prayer will culminate on the first Thursday in May – the annual date for the National Day of Prayer. We give thanks for the gift of prayer. We trust that our Lord both hears and answers all prayers.

The Lord’s Prayer Tuesday April 28, 2020

Catechism Reading As the head of the family should teach it in a simple way to his household Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on prayer.

Prayer Station Activity We pray the Litany (an ancient prayer teaching us to bring all things to our Lord in need) together. At the beginning and at the end of the Litany, there are three cries to the Lord to have mercy. The Lord loves to have mercy. The Lord came to have mercy. And the Lord continues to have mercy – upon us.

The Introduction Wednesday April 29, 2020

Catechism Reading Our Father who art in heaven. What does this mean? With these words God tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father.

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on the Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer Station Activity Complete the “Good or Bad Father Activity” to consider the role of fathers and children. After completing the activity, close by saying a prayer. Remember, to thank our Heavenly Father for making us His beloved children and for always listening and answering our prayers.

11

Fathers – Good or Bad In the space below, list ways that make a great dad and bad

traits that make a dad.

We call God “Father”. He is the best father that anyone can have.

What does this word tell us about God and our prayers?

The First Petition Thursday April 30, 2020

Catechism Reading Hallowed be Thy name. What does this mean? God’s name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also. How is God’s name kept holy? God’s name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as the children of God, also lead holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to God’s Word profanes the name of God among us. Protect us from this, heavenly Father!

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on the Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer Station Activity Complete the “God’s Name Activity”. On the following page, fill out the chart, reflect, respond to the question, and pray. In your prayer, ask God to help you to use His name well and to cherish the preaching and teaching of His Word.

Page 13: A Study on the Lord’s Prayer… · The Lord’s Prayer is the greatest of all prayers because our Lord Jesus Christ personally gave this prayer to the church. 4 How To Use This

13

God’s Name In the space below, list ways that you keep God’s name holy

and ways that you fail to keep God’s name holy.

Ways God’s Name is Kept Holy

Ways God’s Name is Dishonored

In Holy Baptism, God places His name upon us. Through this washing of the water and the Word, we bear

God’s name in all we say and do. How can you gently admonish those who unknowing misuse God’s name in speech or

teaching?

The Second Petition Friday May 1, 2020

Catechism Reading Thy kingdom come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God’s kingdom come? God’s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on the Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer Station Activity We pray for our community, our neighborhoods, and even our neighbors. On the following page, identify a few of your neighbors (or their houses if you don’t know their names – yet) and pray for them. In your prayer, ask God to bless their family, professions, health, school, etc. Make sure to include a petition that your neighbors would also trust in our Lord Jesus and believe in Him.

The Third Petition Saturday May 2, 2020

Catechism Reading Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also. How is God’s will done? God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will.

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on the Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer Station Activity Respond and reflect to the following questions. Close in prayer by asking God to provide wisdom, protection, guidance, energy, and strength to lead – to our pastors, principal, teachers, and leaders.

No Obstacle Can Stand In God’s Way

1. Christians have always encountered

obstacles when bringing the Gospel to the world. What obstacles do you see in the world

that hinder the spread of the Gospel or keep people from knowing Jesus?

2. What things in your life threaten to pull you

away from the Word of God?

+ Pray for God to provide wisdom, protection,

guidance, energy, and strength to lead – to our pastors, principal, teachers, and leaders.

The Fourth Petition Sunday May 3, 2020

Catechism Reading Give us this day our daily bread. What does this mean? God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to all evil people, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving. What is meant by daily bread? Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a devout husband or wife, devout children, devout workers, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, self-control, good reputation, good friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.

The Fifth Petition Monday May 4, 2020

Catechism Reading And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. What does this mean? We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment. So we too will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on the Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer Station Activity We pray the prayer asking our Father in heaven to graciously forgive our sins for Christ’s sake.

21

We Pray Together

Let us pray, Most merciful Father, our sins make us unworthy to ask anything of You. For the sake of Your dear Son, do not condemn us for our sins, but hear our cries for mercy and forgive us our trespasses. As You have forgiven us, we, too, pledge to sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

22

The Sixth Petition Tuesday May 5, 2020

Catechism Reading And lead us not into temptation. What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on the Lord’s Prayer.

Prayer Station Activity Make a list (and pray) for those who have forsaken the Christian faith. Ask God to return the wayward and erring – making them wise to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Seventh Petition Wednesday May 6, 2020

Catechism Reading But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven.

Online Teaching Watch the short online teaching on the Lord’s Prayer.

The Conclusion Thursday May 7, 2020

Catechism Reading For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. What does this mean? This means that I should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has promised to hear us. Amen, amen means “yes, yes, it shall be so.”
