SYNOPSIS

This thesis is a survey of theatrical presentations in

Saskatoon from 1912 to 1930. No attempt is made to propound theories

based upon these facts.

About three-quarters of this thesis presents a day-by-day

compilation of professional stage productions and locally produced

shows that appeared in the major Saskatoon Theatres from 1912 through

1921.

In the remaining one-quarter of the thesis the theatrical

productions from 1922 through 1930 are dealt 'With under five headings:

Vaudeville, Repertory Companies, Local Shows, Travelling Shows and

Specials. Under each heading, trends are reported and notable or

recurring shows are listed.

A concluding chapter is added, in which the particular years

1912, 1922, 1925, 1929 and 1930 are compared in order to emphasize

the differences between the earlier years of flourishing professional

theatrical entertainment and its later, rapid decline.

An appendix comparing the lowest and highest prices of admission

in 1912, 1920, 1928 and 1930 concludes the thesis.

1912 was a busy theatrical year for Saskatoon. Vaudeville

shows were negligible, but there were fourteen repertory companies that

appeared for varying periods of time. The companies were: Tom Marks'

Company, HaITY Bernard's Company, the Allen Players, HaITY D. Marr's

Vjestic Stock Company, the Eckhardt Company, the Gus Forbes Stock

Company, the Permanent Players, the Sherman- Cleveland Opera Company,

the Orpheum Players, Fred A. Byers and Company, Miss Jeanne Russell

and her Company, the Le Monaie Musical Comedy Company, Sanford Dodge

and his Company, and the Lewis and Lake Company; Then, too, over fifty

different appearances were made by travelling shows.

If a person wished to do so, he could spend a long weekend in

Saskatoon watching: the Sherman-Cleveland Opera Company perform. I.h!

Follies £1 1911 on Thursday, February 29, at the Star Theatre; the

Eckhardt Company perform 1.D. Bisho'E's Carriage on Friday, March 1,

at the Orpheum Theatre; and on Saturday, March 2, the All-Star English

Company perform Kleshna in the afternoon and. Edged in

the evening.

By 1922 the complexion of theatre in Saskatoon had undergone

changes. Fourteen travelling shows appeared; six shows presented. were

locally produced; only one repertory company, the Hildebrand Dramatic

Company, appeared and presented thirteen different shows; but thirty

eight different vaudeville shows put in an appearance.

If Our theatre_goer of 1912 were to return in March of 1922, he

would be able to see only one vaudeville show from Thursday, March 2,

128

Page 135: A SURVEY OF - HARVEST

129

through Saturday, March 4; whereas, in 1912, he had four different

choices of stage offerings in a similar three-day period.

On page J of the Saskatoon Daily Star for Friday, October ;,

1924, the following article appeared:

Arrangements have finally been made to open Pantagesvaudeville at the Empire theatre for two days only eachweek during this season. The days will be Monday and

Tuesday with the usual matinees each afternoon and one

show each evening.

UNSU CCESSFUL FINAN CIALLY

"The last two years have not been financiallysuccessful in bringing this form of entertainment to

Saskatoon," G. A. Stuart, manager, said tOday."Vaudeville patrons genearally;;ii) do not know the greatexpense involved, but to give an idea of the cost of these

acts, the bills seen here last season averaged over $2,200per week for salaries alone. On top of this is the greatexpense of operating, advertising, etc. The management ofthe Empire wishes it understood that they appreciate thebusiness given by about 1,500 regular vaudeville fansthat can be depended upon each week, but as this is farbelow the required amount to maintain the vaudeville succes

sfUlly it will be necessary to have a larger patronage thanheretofore.

LAST CHAN CE

''Unless a better showing is made this season, it isthe last time that Pantages vaudeville will operate inSaskatoon. Statements were made last week that this isthe smallest city offering Pantages between Chicago andSpokane. This can be enlarged to the fact that it is

probably the smallest city on the entire circuit. Questionsare often asked why do we not get Orpheum vaudeville inSaskatoon. It 'WOuld be like building a 20 story officebuilding here at present. And it might be stated thatin quality and cost of bills Pantages vaugeville todayis not very far behind the best type or LSii/ vaudevillein America.

GREAT PIC,WRE FEATURES

Manager Stuart also announces today that in additionto the regular Pantages bills he will offer every otherweek two great pf.ctur-e attractions. First the Jack

Page 136: A SURVEY OF - HARVEST

130

Dempsey series of "fight and Win" pictures featuringJack Dempsey himself. Secondly, the latest in tworeel comedy pictures "The Telephone Girl" series alltaken from the stories by H. C. Witwer which have beenand are still running in Cosmopolitan magazine. Thesewith a one..reel feature news or cartoon feature 'Willopen with the first bill here on October 20th and 21st.

Every other week will be shown a high class feature

picture. These pictures will be big attractions andfirst run features, he promises. In this way the twoforms of entertainment will be combined in one.

Wednesday 'Will be a "dark" day at the Empire eachweek. Road attractions 'Will occupy the last half ofthe week instead of first half as formerly announced.

The prophecy in the foregoing news report that, tnless a better show-

ing is made this season, it is the last time that Pantages vaudeville

will operate in Saskatoon.", was verified in 1925 when the last five

Pantages vaudeville shows appeared at the Empire Theatre. The Daylight

Theatre ran vaudeville acts from 1925 through May of 1929.

In 1925, despite the loss of the Pantages Vaudeville, live

theatre was very much alive in Saskatoon. Ihring this one year, in

addition to the programs of three repertory companies (the Broadway

Players, the Pepper-Box Revue and l<Iiss Arlie lla.rks and her Players)

fifteen travelling and four locally produced. shows were presented.

In 1929, d.espite the loss of the vaudevil.le shows at the Daylight

Theatre, Saskatoon audiences had the choice of seeing: fourteen

travelling shows; four locally produced shows; and the repertory

company of !liiss Arlie Marks.

In 1930, our theatre-goer of 1912 would have had. a difficult

time finding a professional show to attend. No vaudeville and no

repertory companies appeared. Only four travelling shows passed

through the city, and. only one locally produced show of any note

appeared.
