1. Backgroud1. Backgroud

- During the period following Doi Moi Viet Nam has experienced significant economic development with many people having more purchasing power to be able to shift to a more diversified diet that includes increasing share of animal protein.

- Animal movement from farm to market especially from production units in rural areas to consumption centres in urban areas has also intensified.

- The ‘Eco-health’ approach proposed here aims to link surveillance data and knowledge about zoonoses.

2. Research objectives2. Research objectives

1. To estimate occurrence of ‘selected zoonoses’ using human and animal surveillance data.

2. To measure incidence/prevalence in detail of ‘priority zoonoses’ within pilot communities & households – taking into account community priorities.

3. To study ecological, agricultural and social risk factors for the 2 ‘priority zoonoses’ and identify possible risk factor based interventions.

3. Research methodology3. Research methodology

Retrospective studyRetrospective studyData will be collected on both veterinary & public health information from the Department of Animal Health & Ministry of Health by reviewing available data, weekly/month reports from Binh Phuoc & Tien Giang provinces.

Cross-sectional Cross-sectional studystudy

- Focus group discussion: using PRA tools to assist with choice of zoonoses.

- Interviewing farmers, households and veterinarian.

- Priority zoonoses ranking.

4. Progress made4. Progress made

• Selected the diseases (ECoZEIDs) for survey and study: Avian influenza (H5N1), Rabies, Leptospirosis, Meningitis (Streptococcus suis)/PRRS, Viral encephalitis (Japanese B Encephalitis).

• Completed the retrospective study and PRA.• Found the hot spots: – Tien Giang province with 2 districts in Cai Lay (Tan

Binh) and Cho Gao (Trung Hoa). – Binh Phuoc province with 2 districts: Dong Phu (Dong

Tien) and Loc Ninh (Loc Hiep).

• To complete report of project

• Evaluation results of the project

• Raising awareness for Animal health and Human health of zoonosis

• Organizing workshops for stakeholders on the results achieved of the project

• Changing the awareness of zoonosis transmission by local authorities

• Making policy markers.
