Jerry goes out, saying he is going to go fishing in themiddle of the night, and his son follows him out to see what he is really doing out of suspicion. Jerry goes down to the river and opens a coffin. Jerrys son runs home with the nightmarish image of acoffin chasing him.The next morning, Young Jerry asks his father what aResurrection- Man is, and says hed like to be one whenhe grows up.

There is an unusual amount of early drinkng in theDefarges wine shop.Monsieur Defarge comes in with a road mender named Jacques.The road mender is asked to leave, and Defarge confers with the other Jacques characters.One Jacques expressed uncertainty about the safety andsecrecy of their register, but Defarge claims that his wifeknits it using symbols that no one but herself understands.The two Defarges take the road mender to see Versailles.

A policeman tells Monsieur Defarge that there may bean English spy stationed in Saint Antoine named JohnBarsad.Barsad tries to trick her into complaining aboutpoverty or about Gaspards execution.It becomes clear that Gaspard is the prisoner.Monsieur Defarge enters the wine shop and deniesthat the village shows sympathy to Gaspard.The spy tries to tell the Defarges that he knows aboutDoctor Manette.He reveals that Darnay is the nephew of Monseigneur.

Summary/Brief Analysis A upper class man named Foulon became a target forthe revolutionaries, he insults the poor by stating that

if the peasants ate grass they wouldnt be starving. Foulon fakes his own death but is later captured he ishanged three times as the first two times failed(therope broke).

The Revolutionaries beheads him, puts his head on aspike, and fill his mouth with grass.

Summary/Brief Analysis A fellow revolutionary meets up with anotherrevolutionary and discusses the direction of ainfamous aristocrats(murdered Marquis)chateau. The men head to the Chateau and set it on fire aloyalist of the Marquis rides to a group of soldiers andrequests assistance, none is given.Gabelle a tax collector for the Marquis is nearly killed,he takes refuge on the rooftop of his house from whichhe sees the burnings of the Chateau and many otherBuildings.

Summary/Brief AnalysisMr. Lorry is told to secure any assets that belonged to TellsonBank in France.Darnay warns Mr. Lorry about the dangers of France, Lorry agrees to bring a bodyguard, Jerry Cruncher.Lorry gets a letter sent to the Marquis St. Evremonde, he isinstructed to deliver it to the Marquis, Darnay says that he knowsthe Marquis; to hide his identity, he says that he will see to it thatit will be safely delivered.Darnay opens the letter and finds out that Gabelle the tax

collector is asking the new Marquis to come to France to savehim from the Revolutionaries.Darnay is determined to go save Gabelle and leaves a letterbehind for his wife and his father in law.

As Darnay travels through France he is frequently stoppedand questioned.Eventually when he arrives in France is captured andplaced in a prison called La Force.The Prison guards hands over Darnay to the WineMerchant Defarge they converse, Defarge asks why Darnay came to France, Darnay answers by asking Defarge forassistance, Defarge declines.

Darnay is put back into prison this time into a cell thatmeasures five paces by four and a half, which may hintthat he has arrived to Tower 105 at the Bastille prison!
