PUBLISHED MONTHLY JULY 2013

A TRIBUTE TO JACK TEMPLETON (FROM THE OTHER FRED WARK)

(Editorial note: Fred Wark is our past Board

President and still is on the Board of Directors)

I owe Jack Templeton special thanks. He was responsible for providing me the

opportunity and privilege to serve on the board of Lafayette Industries. My

connection with Lafayette has family ties.

In the mid-sixties, my father (the first Fred Wark) worked with Jack on a

committee at Manchester United Methodist Church to raise funds for and to build a

new sanctuary. They did so successfully. From that experience and weekly fellowship, they became good friends.

In 1970 my family left St. Louis. In the early 1980s and now retired my folks returned to St. Louis to be closer to

their adult children and back in a city they loved. While reconnecting with past acquaintances Jack told my father

about Lafayette (Jack was board president then) and invited him to join the board of directors, which he did.

My father shared with me his experiences with the workshop staff, directors and workers. It was clear he was

enjoying himself. Having developed a personal desire to “do good” along with the encouragement of my

employer, I asked about and was offered a seat on the board in the mid-1980s.

Having two Fred Warks on the board at once made the board conversations interesting – often requiring members

to identify me as “the younger” (I’m not a Junior) or as “the other Fred Wark.” Routinely, Jack made each new

board member a name plate for use during the board meetings. I got mine at the third meeting I attended. Jack

cleverly unconfused the identity situation. I became “Frederick Wark,” which I don’t use but it was better than

being “the other Fred Wark.”

Peace be with you, Jack.

FRIENDS OF LAFAYETTE INDUSTRIES NORTH By Judy Way

For Calendar:

There will be no Knights of Columbus Dance at Valley Industries in July. The next dance is scheduled for

August 9.

The next meeting of Friends of Lafayette Industries North is at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, in the

Lafayette North conference room.

Friends of Lafayette Industries North Annual Family Picnic & Auction.

Several employees of Lafayette North and their families & friends attended the employees’ picnic on Sunday, June

9, at American Legion Post 338 in Overland. Thanks to all of you who braved the threatening weather forecast to

join us and enjoy the afternoon.

The first objective of our picnic is to provide good food and a fun social afternoon for the employees. In spite of

the fact that we had to escalate our schedule and eliminate some of the planned activities due to the threatening

weather, the smiling faces of the employees proved that we accomplished that objective. The other objective is to

raise enough money from our auction, white elephant sale, and raffles to fund the employees’ holiday party and

provide each employee with a gift. We are pleased to report that we raised enough money to plan a great holiday

party and to fill Santa’s bag with special gifts for the employees.

None of that would be possible without the generosity of our donors and the attendees who bid so generously on

our auction items. Please help us thank our donors by patronizing their businesses when you can:

All of you who stepped up and helped us with all aspects of the picnic and, of course, our executive

committee, who spent so much time & energy planning and executing the entire picnic and activities.

Congratulations to our raffle winners:

Kathleen Niemeyer won the Silver Dollar City tickets

Pam Burton won the Cardinals Baseball tickets

Debra Coleman won the Six Flags tickets.

The Bar-B-Que basket raffle put together by Sheryl Hardy was won by Jerry Phillips.

The 50/50 drawing winner, Kimberly Sykora, donated her winnings back to Friends of Lafayette Industries North,

doubling our proceeds from the raffle.

Thanks to all of you who attended and helped with the picnic. We couldn’t do any of this without you.

ENTERPRISE DONATION By Denise Bovyn (Proud Mother)

My name is

Denise Bovyn and

I am from

Enterprise Fleet

Management. On

June 5th

I

presented a check

to Lafayette

Industries for

$1,500 from the

Enterprise Holdings Foundation, which was founded to enable Enterprise employees to give back to their local

communities and to organizations that they are personally involved in, and feel passionate about supporting. I am

the proud Mom of Jamie Bovyn, a Lafayette employee. Mary Beckerle, Development Director for Lafayette, says

she wants to thank Denise for sponsoring Lafayette so that they could get this grant!

WALK, RUN ‘N ROLL

On Sunday, May 19 Dana Thebeau, along with her parents and aunt, attended the Walk, Run ‘n Roll event that

was held at Busch Stadium. There was a pregame rally with food and entertainment. Dana met Jack Clark, a

former 1st Baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, and had her picture taken with him. The walk was held on the

track inside Busch Stadium. It was really awesome being down by the field. There were so many people there,

what a great show off support. We stopped by the resource fair and then went upstairs to our seats to watch the

game and have our free hot dog and soda, all of which came with the walk. Everyone had a great time!

THANKS TO BILL FLORENT AND CASSIDY TURLEY REALTORS By Mary Beckerle

In May, Bill created Casey’s Challenge in honor of his daughter, Casey, an employee at Lafayette. He challenged

Cassidy Turley employees to pay $5.00 per guess to guess how close he could get to the hole in 10 shots at the

2013 Lafayette Golf Shootout. He raised over $3,000 and we had a lot of fun with this contest!

THANKS TO THE MORROW FAMILY By Mary Beckerle

When Lynn and Margaret Morrow found out that the first day of

Lafayette’s Golf Shootout fundraiser was cancelled because of rain on

June 1st, he generously donated $2,500 to make up for the loss of revenue.

The Morrow’s were already Major Sponsors for this event. If it was up to

them, they wouldn’t want this additional donation advertised – but we

just couldn’t resist spreading the word of such generosity! Left: Suzy Morrow helps Rob Libera with the raffle drawing for the 2013 golf shootout

OUR ALASKAN CRUISE By Mike and Polly Rutherford (Proud Parents of Alicia Rutherford)

We recently celebrated our 40th

Anniversary on

an Alaskan Cruise and Land vacation. Pictured

here are a few of their favorite memories:

cruising Glacier Bay and visiting the Mendenhall

Glacier in Juneau. Alicia enjoyed the change of

routine too, by spending more time with her

brothers while still working at Lafayette, and she

also enjoyed a week at camp.

NANCY TAYLOR TIES THE KNOT

March 2012, Selwyn proposes to Nancy May 2013, workshop shower for Nancy June 2013, Selwyn and Nancy Swe

On June 15, 2013, after being engaged over a year, Nancy Taylor and Selwyn Swe tied the knot at Webster Groves

Baptist Church. Due to limited seating Nancy wasn’t able to invite everyone she wanted to, but several folks from

Lafayette were in attendance to witness her wedding ceremony. Then that evening she and Selwyn had their

reception at the Magic House in Kirkwood. Seating again was limited, but everyone seemed to have a good time

and got a chance to visit some place that they don’t usually go. We can remember when Nancy first mentioned

Selwyn as someone she as going out with, but at that time she didn’t seem to be looking for a commitment type of

relationship. However, their feelings grew, and while they were at a marathon in March of 2012, and after

crossing the finish line, Selwyn dropped down on one knee to ask for Nancy’s hand in marriage. In May of this

year Karen Van Berkel, Nancy’s boss, put together a shower for her with gifts from the folks at both Lafayette

West and North. Then finally on June 15th

they said their “I Do’s” and a new life began for both of them. We

wish them every happiness in the years ahead, and know that they will have a great life together. Congratulations

to Mr. and Mrs. Selwyn Swe!

ODDS ‘N’ ENDS By The Editor

1. If you can help out, we need some forks, spoons and knives for our folks to be able to use for their lunches,

in case they forget. If you can spare some of these lying around the house, just stick them in a bag and

bring them to Lafayette. A reminder to everyone to please make sure that folks are bringing any utensils

they need in their lunches. Lafayette doesn’t provide these.

2. This reminder is my second one – Becky S. is the person who gets notes about vacation times, days you

want off or being picked up early or arriving late. You can email me at [email protected]

or send me a written note, but please be sure that I get it. PLEASE!

2013 LAFAYETTE WEST PICNIC

The picnic coordinators would like to thank all the volunteers who helped

with the Lafayette West Family Picnic on June 2nd. This event was a success

due to your participation, and we are grateful. Although it was overcast, the

employees seemed to have a good time and enjoyed themselves. In addition,

Putt Putt, the dunking booth and photo booth were fun additions this year.

Thanks to our Board, Rob Libera, and several of our staff for your guidance,

support and various donations. Left to right: Rob Libera, Judy Miller (picnic

planner), Trudy Wojciechowski (recruiter for Special thanks to Mike McGowan for spending a majority of the event in the

picnic volunteers), Carol Gage (picnic planner) dunking booth.

2013 LAFAYETTE WEST GOLF SHOOTOUT By The Editor

The Sanchez Family grab one of excellent “Dogs” We have a group of golfers trying to show their best swing Aren’t we pretty?

Dunking booth was a popular place! Families came and just enjoyed the day! Miniature golf was a family time!

Dunker and Dunkee become friends Putting in a last bet on the raffle Our fantastic staff

The 22nd

Golf Shootout had two different faces for the Lafayette folk. First, because of an event conflict at the

Center, it was held later than usual this year, the weekend of June 1st–2

nd. This just happened to be the beginning of

some serious flooding in St. Louis. The Shootout was held at the Family Golf & Learning Center in Kirkwood, and

Marshall Road runs along the Meramec through there. Saturday, June 1st, was a washout for the Shootout. Both

ends of the road leading into where the Golf Center is located were flooded out. Thankfully the crest for the

Meramec moved on down the river and activities in the industrial area were able to resume on a limited basis. Day

two of the Shootout was a huge contrast to the first day.

Day two was overcast, a little on the cool side and folks were ready to get out and have a good time. There was

lots to do this year. Families were able to play free miniature golf, so competition on the small greens was fierce.

We also had lots of activity as golfers did their best to sink a Hole-in-One. People were also still able to purchase

raffle tickets for a try at a $1,000. There was also a photo booth where you could either take a serious picture or

dress up for a goofy one. If that wasn’t enough to get you excited, we also had a dunking booth where folks could

take a chance at seeing whether they could hit the lever, releasing our “Dunkee” into the water. Finally there was

the picnic itself. We got a bigger tent this year so there was plenty of room for everyone. Everybody got a free hot

dog, drink and chips. It was good eating!

Hopefully next year our weather will cooperate more and we will have a nice warm, but not too warm, day with

no flooding and just enough rain for the farmers. This year was a huge success and thank you to everyone who

made it great, despite the obstacles.
