The class of "51" presents this "Log" in memory of our

high school days. Leafing through our joys, sorrows and ac-

complishments, we have selected the best and proudest moments

for this year book. It is a diary which will remind us in later

years of familiar spots, and familiar faces; of graduation's solemn

march, the diploma and the handshake which marked our final

link with childhood.

With this we give you the 1951 "Log."

To the parents, always our counsellors, loving sustainers, sharers of our joys, heartaches,

mistakes, ambitions, we, the class of 1951, dedicate this book with all the love and

gratitude deeply felt, too little spoken, during the winged years of the happy youth,

you have given us.

MR. CHARLES SCHONEMAN

We, the Senior Class of 1951, extend to you our appreciation for all that you

have done to help us and make our Junior and Senior years ones to remember.

With your help and co-operation we put on a highly successful Junior-Senior

Reception. With your able guidance we have raised the money necessary to

finance such important class projects as the J. S. R. and the Senior Prom. Our

yearbook was published only through the patience you showed through all our

blunders and inexperience. We want to express our gratitude for the time, en-

ergy and inspiration you have given us, and hope you will accept our sincere

thanks and grateful appreciation.

April 21, 1950, was an important date, for at that time we, as Juniors, presented thegraduating class with a formal dance. TheRed Bank High School gymnasium has beenconverted into a Southern plantation, a rosegarden, and a starlight room—but never be-fore have the couples walked into an aquaticatmosphere.

Before the dance every member of theclass contributed his efforts toward decora-tion, publicity and entertainment and the re-sult was worth all the work and fun putinto it.

Glittering fish, violin-playing lobsters, sparkling octopi, bright seaweed, and foamy, green sea walls were all part of the wonder-ful memory of the Junior-Senior Reception.

With four lettermen returning from last year, Coaches Pingi-tore and Phipps began to mold in early September the 1950edition of the Red Bank High School Football Team.

The score of the first game gave a rather dismal outlook forthe rest of the season when the Buccaneers were soundly trouncedby a powerful Princeton eleven, 32-21. The remaining contestswere all close, well-fought battles, with Red Bank winning three, losing and tying one.

After the loss to the Little Tigers, Manasquan's Big Blue cameto town, only to go back disappointed, with a 7-6 defeat, as aresult of a Jeffrey's-to-Cook pass. Manasquan's Morgan scoredin the third quarter, but the conversion failed.

The Rumson Bulldogs really showed their teeth and threw ascare into the Pingitore men, but Keating's six-pointer allowedthe Bucs to attain a 6-0 victory.

A strong Leonardo outfit had a difficult time with the Maroonand White, but the Lions clawed and scratched their way, withthe aid of the Trezza brothers, to a 13-0 triumph.

The Buccaneers most gallantly fought defensive game wentout the window as a strongly favored Asbury Park eleven scoredin the fourth period to win 6-0.

The second game of the interboro rivalry with Red BankCatholic proved highly successful for our own gridders. This13-0 victory, highlighted by the brilliant running of Pete Reeveswho went on a 60-yard jaevet, broke a jinx, for Red Bank HighSchool had never won a game on a Monday.

A sad day in Red Bank brought the Scarlet Fliers of Neptunescoring over the one-game favored Buccaneers to the tune of 7-0.

The best game of the year came on Thanksgiving Day withthe underdog Buccaneer eleven playing Long Branch to a 7-7tie through the brilliant pass-catching of Sonny Thornton andthe rifle-arm of Andy Larabee.

Following in the footsteps of last year'schampionship team, Red Bank once againenjoyed a brilliant season.

The Round Robin served notice to oppos-ing teams that Rew Bank was not to bebeaten if Coach Pingitore and some mightysharp ballplayers had anything to say aboutthe matter—and they did. After taking threegames in succession in the Round RobinTourney, they continued winning, showingno partiality, conquering good, bad andmediocre teams; and when the smoke ofbattle had cleared, the standings showed RedBank in first place, a result of twelve vic-tories and no defeats.

A large share of the credit for this year's

sparkling team must go to the coach, whoguided the boys through their second regu-lar season without a defeat.

One of the best reasons why Red Bankwas always on top was found in the perform-ances of the team's captain, Pete Reeves, whose skillful playmaking and accurateshooting were instrumental in the success ofthe year's quintet. Other outstanding playerswere Billy Cacciatore, whose set shots madethe twine in the basketball nets wish it wereused for tying packages; both Russell andGene Booth were steady players, and JoeCondina, a sophomore, used his height togood advantage for the maroon and whitecause.

Once again this year the West BergenPlace Athletic Field bustled with activity asanother baseball season began.

Boasting a handful of veterans and a newskinned infield, which had in recent yearsgreatly handicapped play on the diamond,Coach Phipps called for all candidates to re-port for practice.

Although the team lacked lettermen, many newcomers fought to gain berths leftvacant by graduation.

Johnny Overton handled much of thepitching for the Buc's, with Russel Boothalso doing some hurling. The power at theplate came from classy shortstop JackieLewis, outfielder Hank Newton and catcherChubby Gambacorta.

Those who saw much action were JohnnyValentine, Johnny Lewis, Jackie Lewis andBill Cacciatore, all on the inner defense; andDick Keating, Hank Newton and GeneBooth handling most of the duties in theouter pasture.

Having taken the sweat pants and spikedshoes out of moth balls for the comingtrack season, Coaches Paladino and Jacoubsscanned their material in an effort to findlikely prospects to wear it.

Only about a dozen boys could be seendisplaying their talents on both the cinderpath and in field events, but even with thissmall turn-out, much was expected of the en-tire team.

The boys participating in each event wereas follows:

HOCKEY

Once again the hockey season has rolledaround. The girls climb into their gym suitsand ready themselves for their future gameswith neighboring schools. Mrs. Smith givesthem instruction on the various skills andreviews the rules of the game. The girlsmay lose some games, but they certainlydon't lose their good sportsmanship.

BASEBALL

A sure sign of Spring is the dragging outof bases, bats and balls from crowded closets. The "weaker sex" takes preliminary prac-tices seriously, getting ready for the big gamewith Leonardo, our only opponent.

There is strong competition between thetwo teams, both striving for a victory; butRed Bank has held its own in the games wehave played against Leonardo in the past.

BASKETBALL

Enthusiasm was overflowing with the startof basketball season. Neptune went down todefeat when we surprised them with a finedisplay of teamwork. Then we lost a hardgame to Asbury; but wound up the seasonwith a final record of four victories out ofsix games, thanks to Mrs. Smith's patience.

One of the greatest ambitions of everyhuman being is to ascend the ladder of suc-cess. Some people expect to get there merelyby good luck. Although this may have a bear-ing on one's progress, it should not be givenmuch dependence. As you go along throughlife, do you ever stop to consider how somemen, and women as well, have won the posi-tions which they hold? Some started humblyand worked and worked persistently, over-coming many handicaps until they had reach-ed their long sought goal. It took some years, but they had the courage and perseverancethat brought success. They aimed high, roseabove the crowd, and became people whowere admired because they were determinedto make something of themselves and to suc-ceed. To a portion of the citizens of RedBank, the former graduates of the Class of'51 of Red Bank High School, this prophecyis humorously, happily, but humbly dedicated.

The road to the top was not smooth, butrocky, and before they reached the summitthere were many bumps, which did not dis-courage them. They didn't give up; therewas always an opportunity, and good thingscame to those who worked. They were notlike the straw on the ocean that drifted aim-lessly. There was an object toward whichthey directed their efforts. There were sacri-fices to make, but when they won they beganto enjoy life and laugh at those who hadmade fun of them when they strove so dili-gently. They were always vigilant and onthe alert for opportunities. They became suc-cessful because of courage, ability and back-ground. They are the former graduates ofR.B.H.S. who, back in 1951, crossed thethreshold of a strange, new world. Manyyears have passed since that eventful day inJune, and because of hard work recognitionhas been won throughout Monmouth Countyand even beyond.

The town of Red Bank has grown into aprosperous and more modern business sectionbecause the Daily Register has become anation-wide paper under the editing of JaneWhite and the publishing of Merna Handle-man; John Crawford has become a promi-nent Broad Street lawyer with private secre-taries, Ingrid Borchardt and Barbara Brower, and stenographers, Ida Palmer and Jo AnnMiller; Ethel West is now the head clerk forthe Red Bank State Board, and her secretariesinclude Geneva Davis, Gloria Irons, MaryJane Covert, Pauline Jackson and MarieMannello; Mozelle Ogle has opened hersecretarial school and employs Loretta Maz-zaroppi as one of the teachers; William Sher-wood and William Smith have acquired out-standing positions as two of the most reliabledoctors in town; Russell Glover says that un-dertaking is a cinch; William Conover, a den-tist on the corner of Monmouth Street, em-ploys Mary Lou Maxwell as his dental assist-ant; Russell Booth has become a well-knownmechanical dentist. Yes, the many years have proved profitablefor the Class of 1951. They have witnessedand been part of the heartbreaks, hardshipsand sorrows of life; but, their bravery, cheer-fulness, unselfishness and service have aidedthem immeasurably. They did not brag ofexpect something for nothing. They remem-bered only that success is the goal of life, andthe Class of '51 reached that great goal.

There is an old proverb that says, "Do not lookto the past," but after graduation we love to turnthe clock back and remember when . . . .

FRESHMAN YEARS

Yellow school buses unloaded, and many insig-nificant figures stepped out to take a look at whatwas going to be their Alma Mater four yearshence . . . Red Bank High School. The Little Silvervictims walked proudly to the entrance and pre-tended that so large a school didn't scare them.Shrewsbury huddled together, hanging on to oneanother for dear life. Needless to say, Holmdel,Tinton Falls, Colts Neck and Fort Monmouthdidn't feel much different. There were, however,a few Freshmen who knew this new world, andfor them was the triumph of having been in RedBank Junior High for three years.

The difficulties disappeared quickly, and the classbecame organized. Remember the campaigns forclass officers and the election of our two under-standing and hard-working advisors—Mrs. Oakleyand Mr. Wiley? Bill Sherwood became Presidentand was ably assisted by Marilyn Lowenberg, Vice-President; Myrna Stalberg, Secretary, and TerryDor em us, Treasurer.

Time flew quickly, and right around the cornerwas graduation and the wonderful Freshman ClassDance that goes with the "big step." Branch Ave-nue was transformed into Broadway when thegraduating class displayed its talents in "Life WithBobby Sox," starring Jean Osborn, Bill Ottingerand John Crawford.

Thus ended our first big year, but we knew wehad three more glorious ones to follow.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

A wonderful thing happened this year . . . ourclass became complete when River Street Schooljoined the ranks. With it came many hard workers, athletic stars and lasting friends. Mr. Schonemanhelped to organize the class, new officers wereelected, and the good old money-raising campaignsbegan. This meant all those terrific events in theSenior Year would be ours.

The thrill began when we saw the Sophomoreboys on the basketball court or handling the pig-skin on the football field. And most important wasfollowing the cheers of the Sophomore "pep gals"—Rosa Lee Roth and Kitty Hamlet.

We studied and worked diligently, for this wasthe gateway to our future.

JUNIOR YEAR

This was our year. Magazines! Tags! Rulers! The drive was on! Every member showed hisclass spirit by putting everything he had into work-

ing for the class. By now we were well represent-ed in all activities: Buccaneer, Red Cross, StudentCouncil and the majorettes. We elected FredDiMaio, Tom Gambacorto, Anne Burrowes andBill Graham as our leaders.

Do you remember the fun we had during Eastervacation while working on the Junior-Senior Re-ception? The under-water theme was put in thecategories of "highly successful" and "unique."

We owe many of our successes to Dr. Hibbsand Mr. Sisson who help us greatly in guiding usin our chosen fields.

SENIOR YEAR

We . . ., we've reached our goal, too quickly, too painfully. We were lucky enough to see thecoming of Mr. Hurley whose help and friendshipwe shall never forget. Our graduating officerswere Bruno Talerico, President; Shirley Anderson,Treasurer, who contributed much to the progressof the class. We all remember the efficiency ofMozelle Ogle, our capable Secretary, and of KarlHaviland, our Business Manager.

How can we ever forget Pete Reeves, RussellBooth and Skippy Smith on the basketball courtand Bill Sherwood and Butch Talerico on the foot-ball field!

Jean Osborn presided over the Student Councilwhile Jane White became "headman" on the Buc-caneer and, by picking up an issue, we could easilyunderstand how she obtained the position. MernaHandleman took charge of the Red Cross Counciland put the Red Bank High School Chapter inthe news.

Under the capable direction of Miss Thompson, the Senior Class once again turned to Broadwayand presented "Dear Ruth" with Pat Wells andDick Keating. Clyde Lindner received the Bauschand Lomb Scientific Award and also representedRed Bank in the Oratorical Contest.

The battle was on again for raising money andthe fact that every member of the class had a handin it was most important and satisfying.

In May the Juniors reciprocated and entertainedus with a JSR that becomes one of the fondmemories. The Class gave many dances of variouskinds, but it is needless to say which sticks in ourminds—the Senior Prom.

And so we thank Mr. Schoneman, Miss Thomp-son, Mr. Haviland, Mr. Hurley—and may I shortenthis list by saying that the Class of '51 extends itsdeepest gratitude to the faculty, to the students, toanyone who has any connection with Red Bankfor everything it has given us.

The end came with a day in June, but literallyspeaking, it was not the end, tor in years to come,we'll remember when . . . .
