As you may have noticed, the Lafayette Catholic School System updated its mission last year. A framed picture of the new mission is now located in every classroom as well as in all four of our schools’ front offices. The LCSS mission now reads as follows:

The Lafayette Catholic School System, centered on Jesus Christ, educates the whole person in a culture that is:

• sustained by Gospel witness and service;

• imbued with a Catholic worldview;

• supported by a community of faith;

• distinguished by academic excellence; and

• committed to student success.

The mission was updated as part of our accreditation, which recommends our mission statement be reviewed regularly. Over the course of nearly a year, we utilized a mission committee, various source materials and stakeholder surveys to write, refine and approve this new mission. The mission is packed full of meaning, and below is a brief explanation of each bullet point.

• Gospel Witness: As part of the New Evangelization, the Church calls us to bring the Gospel to the world. Our schools are a place where we can encounter and live our faith and learn to take our faith out into the world.

• Christian Service: As Catholics, we are called to follow Christ’s example and to serve others. The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy as well as Church social teachings give us inspiration and a guide in our service to others.

• Catholic Worldview: A Catholic Worldview is a view of the world through the “lens of divine revelation.” Catholicism is a comprehensive way of life that should animate every aspect of how we, as Catholics, view the world.

• Community of Faith: A community of faith is modeled after the Christian family and in many ways is an extension of the family. Additionally, as a community we support the mission of the Church; respect the dignity of every person; welcome and invite others to be participants in this community of faith; and create an environment that fosters and strengthens the faith of the individual.

• Academic Excellence: Academic excellence refers to more than just good grades or classroom “rigor.” Rather, it includes the integration of academic standards, 21st Century learning and Catholic teachings in the classroom as well as through co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

• Student Success: With partnerships between the school, parents, the religious, and the extended community, we challenge our students to develop more than just isolated skills. Rather, our students develop their whole person. Our students are taught and practice our nine Core Gospel Values and the seven 21st Century Skills. These values and skills are part of the classroom as well as integrated into our athletic teams and our extra- and co-curricular programs, all of which lead to student success.

For a more detailed explanation of the mission, check out my blog series on the mission from the 2015-2016 school year.

Mrs. Traci (Heath) Haan is a native of Lafayette, graduating from Lafayette Jeff and Purdue University. After graduating from Purdue, she married Central Catholic alum Pat Haan, and their family grew to include five children: Stephanie (CC ’09), Brett (CC ’11), Alexandra (CC ’12), Megan (CC ’15) and Annie (CC 7th grader).

Mrs. Haan began her career teaching high school and middle school math at Frontier and Benton Central Schools. Fortunately for us, in 1998, armed with 12 years of teaching experience, she joined the faculty at Central Catholic, where she is in her 19th year of teaching math to our students. Mrs. Haan also serves as the Math Department Chair and has helped train and mentor many of our young teachers over the years.

When asked about Mrs. Haan’s impact at CC, Principal Neil Wagner said, “Mrs. Haan is one of the most effective and efficient teachers I know. Her ability to incorporate our mission into the classroom is outstanding.”

Mrs. Haan currently teaches Algebra I, Algebra I Lab and Honors Geometry. The Algebra I Lab was created to assist students who need extra attention in order to pass the End-of-Course Assessment (ECA), required by the State of Indiana to graduate from high school. “Mrs. Haan does an exemplary job of preparing students for the ISTEP+ exam,” Wagner said. “She is the reason why our math test scores are so high.”

This is a fact not lost on the parents and students at CC. One parent commented gratefully, “Mrs. Haan quickly evaluated my son’s challenges and helped us form a plan that resulted in success.”

When asked what she enjoys most about teaching at CC, she said, “I love living my faith 24/7. I also appreciate that our students are from families that share my values of faith and education.”

“Traci is totally committed to our Catholic schools as witnessed by our students every day in the classroom,” Wagner said. He added she is “ideally suited to guide our young students.”

When she’s not teaching, Mrs. Haan enjoys working outside in her garden and helping her children with 4-H projects. She and husband Pat, a district sales manager for Monsanto, also enjoy Purdue baseball games (son Brett was a pitcher for Purdue), and are fans of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.

The Lafayette Catholic School System family is grateful for all our outstanding and faith-filled teachers, including Mrs. Traci Haan!

CONNECTIONS | SUMMER 2017 5

This past summer, I took a mission trip to Appalachia with six other girls my age and two of the greatest teachers/mentors/human beings CC has ever staffed.

Over the course of the week, I made friends, served a community, and — most importantly — grew in my faith in God. It was hot. It was hard work. It was wonderful.

The mission trip we went on was organized through Glenmary Home Missioners, whose mission is to “serve the spiritual and material needs of those living … in the South and Appalachia, and proclaim and witness … the power of God’s love, mercy and justice.” The house we went to is located at the top of Mt. Joppa (lovingly called “Toppa Joppa”) and is one of the sites for Glenmary.

Most of my actual serving experience took place at a construction site. Our project was to build a ramp for a woman named Maybelle. She is 80 years old and can’t get up and down her stairs very easily anymore. Our group worked in the 90-degree heat for a couple hours each day. I learned how to hammer, drill, measure wood and put in spacers for the base of the ramp. It may not sound like much, but I was proud of my contributions to the site. However, the real impact the worksite had on me was not in the work I did, but in the experience of working on the team. Every 25 minutes or so, I would stop to hydrate and just soak in what was going on around me. I truly saw the face of Christ in all those around me — the workers, the mountain managers, and in Maybelle.

A group of us came together to help this woman. None of us, not even the mountain managers, were from this area or had been a part of this community for very long. But there we were — shoveling the dirt, hammering the wood and chatting with Maybelle.

There was a certain ease and atmosphere that made me feel like I’d been a part of this community for years. I felt like I was building a ramp for a neighbor and a friend, not a person I had met just that week. That is the power God has. He brings together communities and strangers, and He makes them one. If I hadn’t been Catholic or a student at CC, I wouldn’t have gone on this trip. I wouldn’t have met Maybelle. I wouldn’t have discovered my passion for volunteering. None of this experience would have been the same if God wasn’t there.

What do you enjoy most about your current position? Always the kids. I currently get to inspire the entrepreneurial mindset of collaboration, innovation, integrity, relevance and rigor. I laugh every day with and sometimes at my students as well as myself. I work 70-90 hours a week and have few regrets. Anything worth doing is worth doing well, and someone who can do can always do! I love seeing humans in my three-year cohort grow, evolve and find their passions.

How did your faith and your education at Central Catholic prepare you to serve others?I was taught the value of a small community at Central Catholic. I was a member of the swim team, and with no pool at Central Catholic, we had to work harder and be more dedicated by being at the YMCA at 5 a.m. to practice. I was also a member of band and choir, a small community within the Central Catholic community. I’m drawn to underserved niches and helping them build and thrive in small communities.

Central Catholic also taught me the importance of kindness and the love of humanity — accepting each other as humans and loving one another despite and because of our differences. In my current position, my students are 92% designated at-risk, low-income, special needs, impoverished and second-language learners, and I am creating solid business owners. I had teachers who believed in me and believed in differences being appreciated at CC, and I took that with me in my career pathway.

The golden rule is something I still teach. If we make this non-negotiable in our business owners of tomorrow, imagine the difference American Capitalism could be.

In what other areas have you been successful?I have had numerous ‘wins’ in helping first-generation, special needs students, and other students who would never have achieved, believed or loved — who had no idea there are humans who have a capacity to love authentically because their worlds have been filled with hate and violence and anger and poverty. I am awarded by every student who goes to college or is better for knowing me.

I have ‘won’ the self-esteem farmers only get from seeing their flowers bloom and become fruits and their fields become plentiful.

ALUMNI CORNER

Dawn Fregosa (CC ’88)

Meet Dawn (Whitney) Fregosa. Dawn is a Central Catholic alumna from the class of 1988. After graduating from Central Catholic, Dawn attended the University of Dayton. She then became involved with a franchise in South Florida called Mad Science, which encourages kids to learn about science through fun, after-school programs and activities. Dawn later sold that franchise and began consulting with small business automation around the U.S. While living in Santa Cruz, Calif., Dawn saw a Teach for America ad that asked, “Do you want to help urban kids succeed?” Dawn decided she did.

Dawn first worked in middle school before choosing to leave mainstream public schools for the charter school world. Her teaching career evolved to teaching high school English before adding a credential in biology. Dawn helped found three high-performing charter schools in urban San Jose and Oakland. She continued her education and earned career technical credentials in business, finance, sales and service and marketing. She also became a master teacher/trainer in entrepreneurship through the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). Dawn currently works at San Leandro High’s Business Academy.

In 2016, Dawn was presented the John C. Whitehead Global Teacher of the Year Award by NFTE. With that award, she was also given $5,000, which she used to help one of her students, who was homeless, with college expenses.

Dawn was named the Bay Area Global Educator in 2012. She was also named a Microsoft Hero in Education that same year and was nominated by the San Francisco Giants as a teacher of the year by her students in 2011.

Dawn lives with her husband, Richard, who also attended private Catholic schools and is a digital audio visual designer who designs and develops ‘smart’ houses and facilities, such as the Patriots Stadium and the White House. They have two children, Laurel and Tres.

Every year for Dawn’s birthday, she posts a “Pay It Forward” challenge that involves doing a kind act and posting it on her Facebook page. Her former students, who are now based all over the world, all participate. Dawn said, “The world wins because of the compassion of the humans I have taught.”

BOYS TENNIS (Patrick Moeller, Coach)Record: 8-6 due to several rain-outs

Top highlights of the year: The highlight of the year was seeing the strong effort and hard work by our Singles players to earn the right to play and succeed at the Hoosier Conference Tourney. Patrick Tharp at #1, Thomas Gothard at #2, and Jonah Switzer. Thomas lost a hard-fought match that lasted late into the September evening. Although Patrick and Jonah did not win their respective titles, they did earn All-Conference honors. I had three opposing head coaches from other teams compliment me on what great sportsmanship we had displayed. Signature win: 4-1 over Twin Lakes. They have a good program and came into our match with a 7-3 record.

Most improved player: Joe Regich, who was new player to the team. He was a baseball player nursing a leg injury from early spring. Great athlete that became a tennis player!

Looking forward: We will be very strong at the top of the lineup. Seniors Patrick Tharp, Adam Novak and Jonah Switzer will be pushed hard by a couple of younger guys in the battle for the top three Singles slots. Patrick Tharp will play #1 Singles for the 4th straight season.

SPORTS

BOYS SOCCER (Joseph Yeaman, Coach)Record: 12-7

Top highlights of the year: • Placing 5th in conference after never having the lead in any

game. And going through two penalty shootouts• Winning the first Sectional championship in the school’s

soccer history • Our Sectional game against Benton CentralSignature win: West Lafayette

Most improved player: Noah Martinez

Looking forward: Next year, we are looking forward to defending our Sectional championship and seeing the run we make in the three-class system.

VOLLEYBALL (Brad McCarter, Coach)Record: 33-5

Top highlights of the year: • Winning the Hoosier Conference• Winning the Sectional• Winning the Regional• Making the Semi-State FinalsSignature win: Our Semi State semi-final versus Pioneer. This was a hard-fought five set match, and both teams were competing at an extremely high level. We were able to take control in the 5th set and move on to the Semi State finals later that evening.

Most improved player:Gretchen Kuckkan - Gretchen took her game to another level as a sophomore this past season. She became a more complete player, reliable not only on the offensive side but in our serve receive and defensive parts of the game as well.

Looking forward: We are looking forward to bringing back a very experienced and talented group of young ladies from last year. We have once again strengthened our schedule and look to contend for yet another Hoosier Conference and Sectional title this coming fall.

CROSS COUNTRY (Mike DeBoy, Coach)

Top highlights of the year: The 2016 cross country season was a huge success. For the first time in a number of years, the Knights were able to field both a boys and girls team in the Sectional. The girls placed 7th and the boys 10th.

Most improved player: Miriam Walker paced the Lady Knights as a freshman. She was the City-County meet champion. Miriam also was a semi-state qualifier as an individual. Sydney Sterrett was a regional qualifier for the 3rd straight season. Matt Cleveland paced the boys all season and was an individual regional qualifier.

Looking forward: The Knights’ outlook for the future is bright. They must replace two stalwart seniors in Sydney Sterrett and Jacob Normington. Everyone else returns for 2017.

GIRLS SOCCER (Bill Kerr, Coach )Record: 15-5-2

Top highlights of the year: • We won our 1st ever Sectional and Regional titles• We beat perennial power Guerin Catholic for the 1st time ever• We tied Lafayette Harrison for the 1st time everSignature win: Beating Guerin Catholic

Most improved player: Jill Presutti

Looking forward: We should return all but four of our varsity starters, and we have strong players who are ready to step in and compete for varsity time. The returning players know what it takes to be successful, and I expect them to work hard to achieve the goals we set for ourselves.

SPORTS

BOWLING (Greg Claxton, Coach)Record: 6-7. Tied second in conference with McCutcheon.

Top highlights of the year: • Losing to Harrison on a tiebreaker in first match of the season

(Harrison went undefeated in conference play.)• Jacob Lewis rolling a 299 game• First year to have a player sign to bowl at the collegiate level. • Jarret Whitehead will bowl for Ancilla College next year

Most improved player: Troy Zhu started the season with 137 average and ended the season at 168. He also worked his way into the starting rotation.

Looking forward: Four starters will be returning next year, including the top average bowler on the team. We also hope to advance to Regionals next season.

VARSITY FOOTBALL (Kevin O’Shea, Coach)Record: 12-1 (Undefeated Regular Season, Hoosier Conference Champions, Sectional Champions, Lost in Regional Championship Game)

Top highlights of the year: • Defeating Guerin Catholic 34-13 after falling behind 13-0 in

the first two minutes of the game• Ben Tharp’s game-winning TD catch vs. West Lafayette• Winning the Conference Championship by defeating Tipton

for the 2nd time that seasonSignature win: Beating Guerin because that game was won by the big guys on the O-Line and D-Line doing their jobs, but the kids would probably say coming from behind to beat West Lafayette in the final moments of the game.

Most improved player: QB Avery Denhart. He had a career year passing and led the conference in most categories. Avery became a great leader and gave off a quiet confidence that helped the whole team remain calm in difficult situations. Stats: 3,266 yards passing, 69% completion rate, 34 TDs, and only 9 INTs.

Looking forward: The team will have several talented and experienced players coming back next year. The real excitement, however, will be to see how some of the players who have had to wait for their shot at playing time will take hold of the opportunity.

A number of our seniors are talented, but have had to wait behind some pretty good players over the last few years. The team’s success will ultimately ride on how well players like this step up, use their skills, and lead the other members of the team.

With this combination of experienced players and guys who are itching to get their shot on the field, the future should still be bright for the Knights.

SPELLBOWL (Katie Canarecci, Coach)Record: 1st place winner of Class 4 Area Competition more than five years in a row

Top highlights of the year: This year the High School Spell Bowl teams took first place in their area competition. The Central Catholic Spell Bowl senior members were Lucy Ayala, Ethan Harding, Sam Milazzo and Jessie Stein. Juniors members were Dorinda Andrews, Ted Hamacher and Becky Hutzel. Our sophomore speller was Oliva Perigo, and the freshmen new to our team were Madison Jacot, Madison Jaynes, Ambrose Ringo and Isaac Switzer.

Best match/meet: Our success at the area competition placed us 8th in the State in our class size.

Looking forward: With a younger team, I am looking forward to a great season next year. The top six teams participate at State. With a little more studying, we could definitely be a contender next year.

EXTRACURRICULARS

ROBOTICS (Jackie Jansing, Coach)Record: 11-8-1 and won the State Promote Award

Top highlights of the year: This season was highlighted by hosting Central Catholic’s first-ever robotics competition, Bash on the Wabash. The team capped off the event by being part of the winning alliance along with team 11272 Genesis Robotics from Faith Christian and team 12014 The Fire Wires from Goshen, Ind. By winning this event, the team then qualified for the State Championship!

Best match/meet: Along with our alliance partners 3537 Mecha-Hampsters, we scored a state record of 245 points during a single match at State.

Looking forward: We plan to continue to spread the message of FIRST and STEM education by participating in Caterpillar’s Anniversary celebration. We are currently trying to find a new location for the team. We build our robots from scratch and need adequate space for both our tools and the practice field. We also hope we will be able to host another qualifying tournament in the future.

MOCK TRIAL

SPEECH(Jason Newcomb and Katie Canarecci, Coaches)

Top highlights of the year: This was an exciting year for the speech team. Central Catholic has a rich competitive speech history, but with the help of new head coach Jason Newcomb, we started public speaking competitively again.

Best match/meet: Sections was the best Speech Meet. Our three original members were joined by three other speakers - John Hudson, Sydney Rose and Olivia Schaefer. Everyone performed well, and although we didn’t have anyone place at that competition, their scores were very strong.

Most improved students: Austin Gick, Adriana Sambolin Lefranc, and Carlos Velasquez - they were core team members and they earned enough points to qualify for National Association of Speech and Debate Association membership (organization formerly known as the National Forensic League).

Looking forward: We are looking forward to growing our team and reminding our competitors these Knights are ready to Speak and Destroy!

This school year is a “Gold Medal” year for the members of St. Boniface and St. Lawrence School Band. Under the excellent direction of Mr. Don Isaacs, we had 100% participation in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest at Harrison H.S. Every child walked away with increased self-confidence and the knowledge they could perform in front of judges and do exceptionally well. Each student musician was awarded a medal, 99% of which were “Gold” – the highest honor! There is a great enthusiastic spirit in band. Our numbers have swelled from last year at both schools. During the school day, Don Isaacs takes individuals and small groups for lessons on a weekly basis. On Tuesday, the “Advanced Band” members from St. Lawrence and St. Boniface practice together after school. On Wednesday, the “Beginning Band” plays together after school. Together, students from both schools “Strike Up the Band.” Additionally, the elementary band performed at Central Catholic before Christmas. And during Catholic Schools Week, we invited the families to “Breakfast with the Band” so they could enjoy coffee, juice and donuts while the band played in the St. Boniface gym. In March, the elementary band paid tribute to each school by playing both the St. Lawrence School song and the St. Boniface School song. It was a show of unison and solidarity. Much more important than entertainment and competition is the value of music in our lives. Love, joy, sadness, glory — these are things words struggle to express, but music handles naturally. Music is the shortest route to the deepest emotions. In the liturgy of the church, music unifies the congregation. Music also instructs. St. Basil the Great, an early Church Father, was admired by many Christians for his wonderful sermons. But Basil told his congregations most people will remember nothing of his sermon when they got home, but they would find themselves singing the tunes hours later. Music, band and singing are all part of a life rich in expressing the glory of God.

The sound of violins filled the halls of St. Mary Cathedral School the afternoon of February 9 as our third-grade students got to play “Mississippi Hot Dog” together on violins! Although it wasn’t a typical day in music class, we have taken the opportunity every year to engage third-grade students by inviting the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra [LSO] “Strings Attached” outreach program to our school. Through a grant LSO attained, they bring in up to 40 violins, and give local classroom students in mid-elementary grades a half hour, hands-on experience to play a violin! This program is a wonderful enhancement and culmination of an instrument unit our third graders do in our music class each year. Having Orff instruments in our classroom along with using our technology capabilities, students engage and research the instrument families and how they are similar, yet like a family, each has their own role. Getting to play the violin, which is an instrument fairly familiar to students at this age, moves them from a passive learner to the music maker! Just holding the instrument appropriately is easier said than done, but we can see in the students’ faces they take this half hour with an instrument seriously. Who knew you call the base of the bow where you hold it the “frog,” or the area of the bow that goes across the strings is made from horsetail hair?! Our third-grade students do now!

Karen Isaacs of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, and a local educator and performer, takes the time to help each student play a “solo” just to try to get a moment of clarity for each student. Although no one is ready for an audition for the New York Philharmonic, this experience is a starting point for students to consider playing an instrument. It also gives them a greater appreciation for those who become accomplished musicians. Thanks to LSO for this great opportunity!

12 CONNECTIONS | SUMMER 2017

A Trip of a LifetimeBy Kristen Weintraut, German Instructor and World Language Department Chair Every other year, the German Club at Central Catholic takes a trip to Europe to experience the culture and put our language skills into practice. The opportunity is afforded to those students who have had three years or more of German at Central Catholic. In June 2016, a group of 25 Central Catholic students and 16 chaperones traveled to Europe for an 11-day adventure. The group spent time in the four German speaking countries - Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The trip was packed with so many incredible opportunities and learning experiences for the students and the adults. It was the trip of a lifetime! The group met very early Monday morning on June 13 to head to Indianapolis for the day of travel to Germany. Everyone was very excited and rightly so! We had all prayed together on the bus before departure, but the Good Lord thought we could use a little blessing from Bishop Doherty as well. After check in, we spotted him across the airport and stopped him to come over and say hello. Everyone definitely had a pretty spirited feeling after his well wishes and blessing. After our flight, we arrived in Frankfurt, where we met our tour guide Sonja, who was with us the entire trip. Throughout our 11-day trip, we visited both small, picturesque villages like Rothenburg as well as large, modern cities like Munich. We were able to encounter and learn about the culture, history and language of the countries through visiting numerous places including: the Church of Our Lady; the Viktualienmarkt (a city market); the famous English Gardens; the Hofbrauhaus; Rathaus BMW World; the Olympic Park in Munich; a salt mine in Salzburg, Austria; Dachau concentration camp; Neuschwanstein Castle; the Alps; the Sammlung Rosengart art museum, which featured a Picasso exhibit; the Rhine Falls, the largest plain waterfall in Europe; the Black Forest; the town of Heidelberg, famous for its university, the oldest in Germany, and for the dilapidated castle overlooking the Neckar River; a Rhine River cruise; the Cologne Cathedral, which features high Gothic-style twin spires; Beethoven’s house; and the Museum of German History in Bonn.

Another large part of the cultural experience was the food! We had some very incredible meals, and I think everyone came home with chocolate, candy and more. The students have a newfound love of Mezzo Mix, a Coca-Cola recipe of Coke and Fanta, and Döner Kebab, a Turkish delicacy of fresh veggies and meat sliced with spices and sauce in a flatbread. The many beautiful cafés and gelato stands will also be missed. The biggest culture shock for our group was paying to use the toilets and for water; you have to ask for “Stilleswasser,” or you will get carbonated mineral water.

Our group was also able to participate in the incredible experience of seeing and hearing the Mass in another language in a different country. You may not know all the responses in the target language, but you understand what is going on. The Church really is UNIVERSAL! The students were able to pray the Our Father in German, and many even understood a good amount of the homily. I know it was a very rewarding and special experience for all. I was very pleased with the entire trip. Everyone learned more about German history and culture and grew to have a greater respect for its people, and they really seemed to enjoy themselves and the fellowship as a group. The students were so respectful, responsible and fun. They definitely made the most of their experience and truly made us all proud. I know they all hope to travel more in the future, wherever life takes them, and I pray their spirit for adventure and knowledge never leaves them! I would like to thank all the parents and chaperones of this group as well as the students. We all worked very hard to plan and fundraise to make the trip a possibility. It makes me so happy to see the fruits of our labors, in and out of the classroom, so incredibly rewarded. Thank you for your support of the German program at Central Catholic.

Alles liebe, Frau Weintraut

KNIGHTS TO REMEMBER

Jack “Tapper” R. Bogan, Jr., Class of 1965Son of Jack and Mary (Krabbe) Bogan, Jack “Tapper” Bogan attended St. Boniface Grade School before attending Central Catholic High School. While at CC, Jack participated in several sports, the Monogram Club, and student council, and he enjoyed the many friends he made during his school years. “To this day, many of my closest friends are a direct result of my involvement in Central Catholic, both as a student, parent, and as an adult,” Jack said.

He graduated from CC in 1965 and then attended Purdue University’s Krannert School of Business. After college, he entered the insurance business with The Mitchell Agency in Lafayette in 1969, where he has worked for more than 40 years. Jack is a leader in his field and believes “helping our customers get through tough times” is the best part of his job. A lifelong resident of Lafayette, Jack has been active in many organizations and projects in the church and community. He has always been dedicated to the school system, and was active in helping raise funds to keep CC open when it closed in 1991. Jack has also established and funded a scholarship for the Lafayette School Corporation, showing his desire to not only have LCSS prosper, but all students in the community.

Jack continues to give back to Central Catholic by donating his time as the boys golf coach. And the most important part is the life lessons the boys are learning. “We are all challenged regarding our Faith at some time during our life, some more than others. I honestly believe my Catholic education at St. Boniface and Central Catholic enabled me to survive those challenges.”

Jack and his wife, Connie, have three children, all of whom attended Lafayette Catholic Schools: Edward (class of ‘91), Telly (class of ‘94), and Jackson (class of ‘97). Jack and Connie have six grandchildren, several of whom also attend LCSS.

Thomas L. Ferriter, Class of 1973During his time at Central Catholic, Tom participated in CYO, the Monogram Club and YCS. He enjoyed all things high school — proms, pep rallies, games, dances, lighting the gas jets in Mrs. Nagersanker’s chemistry classroom, skipping out of Mrs. Hernandez’s Spanish class through the window (although she caught him later), and meeting his future wife.

Tom celebrated with the entire LCSS community when CC beat Jeff in the 1973 Sectional Final, 57-56. “That is such a good memory for me because although we are scattered across the country, I have joined my classmates — the senior members of the team — for several days each summer after all these years,” Tom said. “We still enjoy our bonds created at CC.” Tom attended Purdue University where he earned degrees in business and engineering. He is also a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Tom began his career in 1979 with the Quaker Oats Company as a shift supervisor, working his way to become plant manager. In 1995, he joined the HJ Heinz Company as general manager before returning to Quaker Oats in 1997. He joined Bush Brothers & Company in 2002 as senior vice president of supply chain and was promoted to president and COO in 2006. In 2009, he became the first non-family member to serve as president and CEO of Bush Brothers.

Tom has participated in nonprofit organizations across the country and currently serves as president of the Board of Directors of Second Harvest of East Tennessee, a nonprofit that distributes more than 18 million pounds of food and grocery products in 18 counties surrounding Knoxville. Tom and his wife, Kris, CC alumna class of 1974, have resided in Knoxville since 2002. They have three children, Erin, Tim and Tara, as well as six grandchildren.

We are excited to announce the following alumni as the 2017 KNIGHTS TO REMEMBER:• Jack “Tapper” R. Bogan, Jr., Class of 1965• Thomas L. Ferriter, Class of 1973• Kristine S. (Harless) Ferriter, Class of 1974• Deacon James B. Rush, Class of 1976

KNIGHTS TO REMEMBER

Kristine S. (Harless) Ferriter, Class of 1974Kris was born in Lafayette to Fred and Barbara Harless. She is one of seven daughters, all of whom attended the Lafayette Catholic Schools. During her time at CC, Kris was a member of CYO, Tri-Teens, YCS, and the white-gloved cheer block. “Some of my favorite memories were staying after school and coming in on the weekends to work on posters for all the games. I also loved Father Greer’s English class. He was a hard teacher, but I learned so much from him.”

After graduating from CC, Kris attended Purdue University, McHenry County Community College in Illinois, and Columbia College in Chicago, where she studied interior design. In 1978, Kris married Tom Ferriter, and they have continued to support each other as their family grew and Tom’s career progressed. Over the years, Kris and her family moved eight times with Tom’s job. Although Kris worked part-time jobs in most locations, most of her effort was put into settling her family into new schools and churches and making new friends.

Kris volunteered in many ways in each city, particularly with churches and schools. She taught religious education, confirmation classes, Brownies and Cub Scouts, and she is a past member of Junior League and Guardian Angels, which is a Catholic women’s group that provides food for the poor in Tennessee. She has also chaired many fundraisers and school events.

The Ferriters settled into Knoxville 15 years ago, where Kris became involved with Catholic Charities of East Tennessee. Kris started volunteering with The Pregnancy Help Center, which is one of the Catholic Charities’ many agencies. Kris has also been a weekly adorer at Adoration Chapel for five years, and she currently delivers Mobile Meals. The Ferriters also started the Maurie Ferriter Scholarship Endowment Fund to help CC students afford tuition.

Kris and her husband, Tom, CC alumnus class of 1973, have three children, Erin, Tim and Tara. They also have six grandchildren.

Deacon James B. Rush, Class of 1976Jim attended St. Mary Grade School and then Central Catholic, where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He was captain of the football team and named to the All-State football team in his senior year. He served as a class officer and received the Monsignor Potthoff academic achievement award. He was a proud member of the “Skitcher’s” and Spelunking Clubs, which provided many fond memories.

He married Loretta Hogan in 1982. They have been blessed with four outstanding children. Jacob (married to Rachael Eberhard) and Mary both graduated from CC in 2006. Sarah graduated in 2008, and Luke is currently a freshman. Twin granddaughters, Addilynn and Coralynn, complete the Rush lineup. Jim graduated from Purdue University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering. He worked as a project engineer for Bridgeport Brass before moving to Lafayette to join his father Jim, his uncle Joe and his son Steve in the family business, Rush Metal Products.

Jim earned his Master of Science in industrial administration from Purdue University in 1988, graduating with honors. Jim worked at AO Quality Stamping and MED Institute before deciding to serve the church full-time in 2014. He was admitted to the program in 2009 and was ordained in 2013. Jim credits his vocation in part to the selfless sacrifice modeled by so many people who make Catholic education a possibility in our community.

Jim coached many teams and worked to help launch CC’s entry into the Little Gridiron football program. He has taught CCD, was a Eucharistic minister at Saint Elizabeth Hospital for 26 years, and served on the Board of Directors of the Bauer Community Family and Resource Center.

Jim is assigned to St. Lawrence Parish as a deacon and serves as Ecumenical and Interreligious Officer for the Diocese of Lafayette. He enjoys a ministry at the Tippecanoe County Jail, volunteers with the Read-to-Succeed program, and is a weekly adorer at the St. Elizabeth Adoration Chapel.
