President’s prattleBy the time this magazine arrives we should be over the Christmas and New Year’s festivities and many of you will still be enjoying the holidays. Having Dion and Christina home from school over the Christmas holidays is a long distant memory for me but I know we made the most of our time together. We are only into our second week of December as I write this and yet I have already heard many parents lamenting (while shopping) what to do with their kids over the school holidays. I wish and hope that you all were surrounded by family and friends, were able to relax and maybe even received something nice. While Volvo was established in 1915 (as a subsidiary of SKF Bearings), both Volvo Group and Volvo Cars consider the official founding date to be on the 14th April 1927, when the first car, the Volvo OV4 Series, affectionately known as “Jakob”, rolled out of the factory in Hisingen Sweden. That means Volvo turns 90 Years Old in 2017.We had a number of events to cover in December. Firstly the Voldat tune up and inspection day on Saturday the 3rd December. Numbers were down on previous years and Doug has provided some photos elsewhere in the magazine. The annual Christmas Party was held on the next day and we tried a new venue, being the East Malvern RSL. We were greeted with turmoil in the kitchen with some event (explained as an accident) occurring the day before and resulting a number of staff not turning up for work. Thankfully the staff that did attend worked with us and we were able to proceed. We had 30 people attend this Christmas Party. We then had the last night meeting held for the year, again at Voldat on Wednesday 7th December. While I was disappointed with the turn up we did get some new members on the night. A big thank you to John Brady for running the BBQ and ensuring everyone had enough to eat. Our last event for the year was the Country Christmas Party at MotoBean in Malmsbury on Sunday the 11th December. We had 30 people attend this event with people coming from far and near. Bruce came all the way from near Hamilton and Laurie came up from Safety Beach. There was also good attendance from Melbourne. I would like to thank the following for providing raffle prizes: Berry Motor Group, Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM), Voldat, and Allan Abbott. I would like to thank Mark Hoffmann for once again organising the magnificent trophies and Werner Golla for his help and support.

The RACV Classic Car Showcase is drawing ever closer and will be on Sunday 19th February 2107 at Flemington. This will be a special event to coincide with the 90th Anniversary of Volvo. As per normal everyone is welcome so ensure your pride and joy is prepared and ready. We will not have a BBQ at this event but members of the Committee are working on an alternative lunch and drinks will be readily available.Again don’t forget the National Rally to be held in Warwick 5th to 7th May 2017. The Sunshine State Volvo Club (SSVC) will be the host club. Look to the SSVC pages of this magazine for updates. Also we will give you updates on the Dutch Volvo Club’s 120 Tour of Australia.Lastly, I attended the AOMC’s 40th Anniversary, President’s Dinner in October and the main discussion point from all the Presidents (representing over 200 Clubs) was how to get younger members involved in both joining a club and in attending events. While many of the clubs represent long gone marques such as Packard and Riley other specialised in specific models such as the R & S Series Valiants. The future of any automotive club depends on an ability to attract new members and to provide members with a range of activities and information. While we are currently lucky with Volvo’s not only attracting a diverse group of people and also enjoying a renewed popularity, we cannot get complacent. The AOMC is seeking ideas on how to address the problem (getting younger members) and if anyone has any ides or would like to provide some input please feel free to contact me.

Until next timeHeino Nowatzky

Please be aware that VicRoads have strict guidelines for eligibility of cars on the Club Permit Scheme (CPS), including acceptable modifications. Effective February 2015 with the changes to the CPS, the rules for modified vehicles were clarified and an M-plate was introduced. Any vehicle that is modified beyond that which is acceptable under the standard CPS must have VASS approval (an engineer’s certificate). Please refer to the VicRoads website where all details are clearly spelled out. It is not the Club’s position to advise on legality or interpretation of the regulations. If the Club

becomes aware that a vehicle on the CPS has been modified beyond the rules for the standard CPS without the appropriate engineering approvals, we will contact the owner and give them a chance to obtain the approvals. If the owner does not comply or does not reverse the modifications, we will be required to contact VicRoads and advise them that the vehicle is not eligible for the CPS and VicRoads will then take the necessary actions. If you have any questions, please contact the President or one of the Club Permit officers.

For those club members who have classic cars on Club Permit plates in Victoria, it is MANDATORY that your membership is paid up. If your membership is lapsed and the police pull you over to check your details, they can contact us to confirm your membership is current. If not, you will be fined for driving an unregistered vehicle - fine is around $700 plus! Do the right thing - you’re saving a lot of money by not having to pay full registration fees, so the least you can do is keep your membership paid up. It’s not that hard, and a lot of you are slack and un-financial at any given time!

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: When you put a new car on club plates, you must let Greg Sievert know the car details and plate number. If we are contacted by Vic Roads and they ask about your car, and I don’t have it on my database, you could get in serious trouble! When your club membership renewal form is posted out in the magazine before your membership is due to expire, check over the list of cars and make sure everything is up-to-date on the list. If it isn’t shown on the renewal form, I don’t know about it.

Email me ([email protected]), call (0401 713 595) or post any updates to the club PO box.

The committee has developed a set of guidelines and expectations for members with cars on the permit scheme.

Note for new Club Permits initiated beginning February 2015, the documentation required and forms have changed with the new rules developed by VicRoads. The expectation is that members will bring their VicRoads Club Permit renewal forms to a night meeting or club event for signature instead of just posting to the club for signature.

The following Committee members can sign VicRoads Club Permit renewal forms: Heino Nowatzky, John Johnson and Greg Sievert.

Ed’s noteThe new year has started off with a bang. For affeciandos of the now gracefully aging 240s, the Victorian section adds a new (hopefully) regular column on these wonderful machines. And Mark Hoffmann, whose exquisitely presented cars have graced and won many a show and shine commences another column on the art of turning an average car into a shining exemplar.

With so much in the Victorian Club notice board this issue, some has had to go on this page. If you have a car on club plates, then make sure you read the information below.

Lots to read in here, and of course, lots of pictures too, so without

further ado, here is the first for 2017. Enjoy it, and many thanks to the contributors.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS! (AS AT 10 DECEMBER)

YOUR MEMBERSHIP

CLUB PERMIT CARS

Lisa Zeeher Andrew & Martine Charalambous (Holden Kingswood) Harry Maciejewski & Jenelle Taylor (240GL)

As of 10th December we have 299 financial members and 26 members who are un-financial, bringing our total member count to 315. If you are unsure of your membership expiry date, please look at the details above your address printed on the fly sheet inserted with your most recent club magazine. PLEASE BE SURE WE HAVE YOUR CURRENT EMAIL ADDRESS ON FILE as membership forms will be emailed to all members about a month before your membership is due. Please review your details and return the form with your payment, or if you pay via direct deposit, you can email me any changes. Be sure to put your name and membership number in the direct deposit transaction description so

we know where the money is coming from! WHY? Because we still get direct deposits that say something like “Bendigo Bank - Family Membership” with no account name, and no membership number or member name. Your name does not automatically come through with your bank transfer (depending on your bank) so you really do have to put your name and preferably membership number in the transaction description if you want us to know where the money is coming from. If you have any questions about your membership, please contact the Membership Secretary, Greg Sievert, 0401-713-595 or email [email protected].

BREAKING NEWS: Be sure to check your club permit expiry date! VicRoads is supposed to send out a renewal about 8 weeks prior to the expiry, but we have had a number of members, especially with cars put on the scheme recently, who have not received renewals and their cars may not have been properly recorded on the VicRoads database. If you are unsure, contact VicRoads to confirm. It is your responsibility to ensure your permit is current, so I recommend putting a reminder in your calendar a few weeks before the permit is due to avoid getting caught out!

240 Register page(s)Welcome members, to this issue’s Volvo 240/260 Series Register Page. I hope all members weathered the holiday season and associated festivities safely and happily. To kick off a brand new year in Rolling, myself and magazine editor Adrian Beavis recently discussed my using this space over the coming months for a series of brief but regular articles devoted to the subject of car care. It seemed to us that there is a comparative wealth of material in the magazine on matters mechanical or related to vehicle restoration, but fairly little on cosmetic care and upkeep of the finished vehicle. This happens to be one of my favourite subjects. In fact, given that I’m often asked what products I use and how I keep my Volvos looking their best, and in light of the fact that the car care market these days offers the consumer such a bewildering range and breadth of products, it seems like a good opportunity to offer some advice and tips which have been borne from trial and error and experience, and which I hope might help to dispel some confusion and enable others to select the right products for the job and achieve the best possible results for their expense and effort. I’d like to point out though that I’m merely an enthusiast and not

a professional vehicle detailer. But if, as the saying goes, the world is made up of “go-ers and show-ers”, then I have to admit to fitting squarely into the latter category. Whilst I insist on having my cars perform well and to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible, beyond that I’m more interested in having them look their best than making them go as fast as possible. So for the months ahead in Rolling, I plan to be talking car care. If you have any tips of your own to share, or if you would like to agree or disagree with any of my suggestions, please feel free to let me know at [email protected]

Now, any discussion of car care related to paintwork should probably start at the beginning, with washing for instance. But this time around, I’m going to be so bold as to jump ahead a few steps as I’d like to share a true “pro’s tip” that I myself only discovered a couple of years ago. As any bottle of cleaner, polish or wax will tell you, aside from the accumulation of dirt that comes with weather and usage, our cars’ paint finishes are constantly bombarded by atmospheric pollutants and airborne contaminants such as industrial fallout, insect droppings and tree sap, to name a few. These contaminants might

barely be visible, or they might appear as tiny black dots on the paintwork, but they adhere to and degrade the finish, and are not easily removed by washing or even polishing. Mere waxing, whilst protecting a polished surface, will only seal in these impurities if they aren’t removed beforehand. Ultimately though, the more time a car spends parked outdoors and the environment in which it is located, such as under trees, near factories or in salt air, etc. greatly impact the paint surface.

As an example, back in 2007 I purchased a fairly clean and original 1991 740 wagon. The car had been a family workhorse, was parked on the street and was far from immaculate, but I was able to see through the superficial to a car that I could return to a near new standard of appearance. The main key to this was original factory paintwork free from damage or sub-standard repairs. Volvos have always had a high standard of factory finish so I looked for originality and I knew that the clear coat over the metallic gold paint could, with the right products and effort, be re-surfaced, nourished and sealed to look almost as good as new again. On closer inspection though, one thing frustrated me in getting to that point. On the horizontal surfaces, such as

Victorian club news and articles

Page 9: A U S T R ALI A NO.230 JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2017...March Wed 1 - Night Meeting, 8PM. Guest Speaker: TBA. South Camberwell Tennis Club, 332 Burke Rd, Glen Iris (enter from Bickleigh

the narrow shoulder on the doors just below the bottom trim of the side windows on the 740, the paintwork was utterly peppered with the kind of contaminants I spoke of earlier. It literally looked like someone had indeed spread black pepper over the paintwork and that it had been baked on. The countless tiny black dots had accumulated over 16 years of exposure to the elements, giving the surface the texture of sandpaper. These proved extremely stubborn to remove as they were resistant to even my best efforts with the most aggressive “clear coat safe” products. My solution, ultimately, was very labour-intensive and frustrating. With a plastic scraper and methylated spirits for lubrication, I removed all the visible contaminants literately one spec at a time, before moving on to any further polishing. I just couldn’t leave it as it was.

Fast foward a couple of years, and I was glad to be older and wiser, and to know that I’ll never have to repeat that process on any future second-hand car I might acquire. Enter the Clay Bar. If you are at all like I was, you might have heard the term but never really looked into what a clay bar is or claims to do. Once the domain of the professional detailer, clay bars are now available from all the major car care brands and retailers, and for my money they are the closest thing to the proverbial magic bullet that exists in the car care realm. As I mentioned, I jumped the gun a bit in opting to discuss clay bars first off in this article, so it’s worth noting that using a clay bay is a preparatory step in a car care regimen that need only be done occasionally, such as once a year or even less frequently. A car should be “clay barred” before polishing and waxing, assuming the surface is basically sound, but after any compounding or “cutting” to restore a neglected surface.

If you’ve seen or used a clay bar, you will know that it is an innocuous-looking little block of pliable play doh-like yellow clay that punches above it’s weight in terms of what it achieves for the cost or the effort put into using it. In fact, one of my favourite things about using a clay bar is that it is a manual car care activity that involves minimal physical effort and is actually a pleasure to use, as there’s no vigorous rubbing or buffing involved, and the product leaves no residue. In other words, the benefits are well worth the modest input in effort.

Clay bars are always used in conjunction with those ubiquitous spray on, wipe off “instant detailer” products, the kind which aim to enhance the appearance of an already clean car by removing dust and fingerprints and temporarily adding gloss, such as one might do as a quick spruce up before a display day. When a clay bar is used, the one and only purpose of the spray detailer is to act as a lubricant for the action of the clay. Working one section at a time, it’s simply a matter of liberally spraying on some detailer, then gliding the clay bar over the paintwork in a back and forth motion using only minimal

pressure. If there are visible contaminants as discussed, you can literally watch them disappear as they are sheered off the surface and suspended in the clay. When the clay surface becomes darkened from the dirt and impurities it lifts from the paintwork, simply knead it into a new form with a fresh surface and continue on. As far as the spray detailer is concerned, you need to use it generously

to keep the surface well lubricated and you will know when to keep spraying as the clay will want to”grab” at the surface rather than slipping easily over it. Expect to use around two full sized bottles to clay bar the whole vehicle, and finish off with a spray of detailer and a final wipe with a microfiber cloth after completing each panel.

Returning to the example from my 740, a clay bar would have tackled this job with ease. Given the severity of the problem, some repeated back and forth application to the area would have been needed, but ultimately a clay bar is the only way to effectively remove that kind of stubborn surface contamination and prepare the surface for polishing.

So, your paintwork generally looks good, and you are unsure as to whether you really need

to clay bar your vehicle prior to polishing and waxing? There is a simple test. Our finger tips are very sensitive detectors but even on clean hands, oils on the surface of the skin inhibit our ability to glide over paintwork and to feel the tiny irregularities. To overcome this, place an ordinary plastic supermarket bag over your hand. Then, on a clean and dry car, run your fingertips over a surface like the bonnet

or boot lid. Does it feel glassy smooth like a painted surface should, or does it feel more like fine sandpaper, or like there are countless tiny grains on the surface? If you are like me the first time I tried this test, you will be in for an unpleasant surprise! Through the thin plastic bag material, our fingertips can detect all the surface contamination that might otherwise be invisible to the eye but which

actually degrades the finish and prevents your paintwork from looking it’s best. So if you intend to go to all the effort of polishing and waxing your car yourself, it is well worth the investment of initially using a clay bar to ensure you have a clean surface to work with. Perform the plastic bag test again after using a clay bar and you will be amazed at the difference.

Which clay bar to buy? To my knowledge, they

7

Page 10: A U S T R ALI A NO.230 JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2017...March Wed 1 - Night Meeting, 8PM. Guest Speaker: TBA. South Camberwell Tennis Club, 332 Burke Rd, Glen Iris (enter from Bickleigh

all perform the same job. As you will hear me say time and again in these articles, my personal favourite car care brands are Meguiar’s and Mother’s (for reasons of product quality and range) and I tend to stock a combination of products from these two brands. Clay bars are available individually like small bars of soap, but it may be more economical to buy them as a kit where you get two bars, a bottle of spray detailer, and a microfiber cloth.

Like with anything, buy a quality product, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and put in the required effort for the best possible result.

So, for those car care devotees among us for whom the clay bar is something new, I hope my advice proves to be useful and satisfying. As I mentioned, I’ll endeavour to use this segment of the magazine to address a different aspect of car care each issue throughout the year. If you would like

to get in touch with me on the subject, or if there is a particular aspect of car care you would like me to address, please feel free to get in touch with me.

Until next time, I wish all members pleasant and safe motoring.

‘Volvo 240 Guy’Welcome to a new column where we will discuss the iconic Volvo 240.

Now before getting started, let me be clear that in presenting this column, I am in no way seeking to please anyone, or pander to any particular interests that may exist out there. My aim is to present my thoughts about this car and what it is about. I believe that after having owned several dozen of them over the last 30+ years, I feel qualified to comment.

There is a wealth of information on the web about the 240. There are umpteen videos on YouTube about it. If you are after that sort of dribble, stop now, and go onto your computer.

In my humble opinion, when you say “Volvo”, the immediate image that comes to mind is the 240 series, produced from 1974 to 1993. I believe in all about 2.8million. Yes, today’s Volvo looks sharp, with flowing lines, but does it stand out?

When the first 244 was launched, it had the unique shovel nose, and safety bumpers. Nothing else looked like it. It was THE SAFEST car in the world. It had see-through head rests, and a dash from a space ship. It was posh, comfortable and strong.

It had large tail lights and big headlights. People unkindly referred to its styling as “box-like”, when rather it was subtle, classy, practical and different to your average Japanese tin

box or Ford/Holden truck of the day.

If you drove a 2 series in the 1970s and the 1980s, you were somebody. You aspired to own one.

We had import quota restrictions back then, which limited the number of 200’s that came into Oz. Volvo got around this by doing a deal with Nissan and assembling CKD cars in Melbourne. So this loophole resulted in a proliferation of standard paint (as the local models were) 244’s (and some 264’s) that were seen in posh suburbs in the capital cities. Back then, Volvo Australia had a marketing department.

From 1976, it had DAY RUNNING LIGHTS, when this was only something dreamed up by manufacturers 40 years later. This made the car even more distinctive on the road.

Subtle changes over its almost 20 year lifespan meant that if you could fix one of the early models, you could also fix one of the last models. And they were/are good to work on! (Some may complain about the 264’s engine accessibility, but it was simple compared to an 850 for example).

So, although I am only scratching the surface, forget your P1800’s, 122’s and so forth, the 240 series is to be regarded as THE classic Volvo. Go and buy one now, before they get too dear.

So you bought an old Volvo some years ago and had 15,000 kilometres of trouble free driving and you have heard that old cars are fetching big prices and you wonder if your car would qualify.

VETERAN

Well to start with your car cannot be a veteran because veteran cars are like veteran soldiers of wars 50 to 60 years ago. They qualify because they managed to dodge the bullets and bombs on the battlefield and survive the dangers of civilian life. They qualify because they are still around – cars are much the same.

Veteran Cars were built before the First World War. So only cars built between 1886 and1914 qualify. With the exception of the first T model Ford built in 1908 when it was the first mass produced car; other cars were hand built in small numbers

Karl Benz

In 1885, German mechanical Engineer, Karl Benz designed and built the world’s first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine. On January 29, 1886, Benz received the first patent for a gas-fuelled car. It was a three-wheeler; Benz built his first four-wheeled car in 1891. Benz & Cie., the company started by the inventor, became the world’s largest manufacturer of automobiles by 1900. Benz was the first inventor to integrate an internal combustion engine with a chassis - designing both together.

Gottlieb Daimler

In 1889, Daimler invented a V-slanted two cylinder, four-stroke engine with mushroom-shaped valves. Just like Otto’s 1876 engine, Daimler’s new engine set the basis for all car engines going forward. Also in 1889, Daimler and Maybes built their first automobile from the ground up, they did not adapt another purpose vehicle as they had always been done previously. The new Daimler automobile had a four-speed transmission and obtained speeds of 10 mph.

Henry Ford

In spring, 1896 Ford completed his Quadricycle. In 1896 after two years Quadricycle was finished. It was four o’clock on the morning of June 4 when Ford pulled his car and made a tour of Detroit. Later he made a trip to his father’s farm located 40 km. Henry made two more, which only keeps one in the Ford museum in Detroit You could say that the Quadricycle was the start of the Ford Motor Company. In more recent times 10 replicas have been constructed and are now housed in various museums.

Since the model T was built until 1927 it qualifies as a veteran or vintage depending on which year it was built.

VINTAGE

Vintage Cars were built between 1915 and 1930

Volvo

Since the first Volvo was not built until 1927 and those built in 1928 and 1930 qualify as vintage.

There is a “Post Vintage” classification from 1930 to 1945.

1938 PV52 owned by John Johnson of the Victorian Club is possibly the oldest Volvo in Australia and can be classified as either Post vintage or Classic.

Post Vintage referred to cars from the 30s until the end of WWII, however after this point it all becomes a bit hazy.

1935 PV36 “Carioca” a luxury streamlined Volvo was advanced for its time and roomy and luxurious it was expensive and only 500 were built. So if you have one hidden away in your garage it would be unique and worth a lot of money

CLASSIC

Some people refer to a car made in the 1940s as a Classic, while others may consider cars from the 1980s to Classics. Classic Car insurance generally kicks in for cars 20 years and older. For states that operate the 90 day Club Permit Logbook Scheme a car must be at least 25 years old at the time of issuing the permit. It only costs a quarter of full registration and insurance is cheaper.

The “Bay to Birdwood” Classic Rally is held every two years from Adelaide to the National Motor Museum at the town of Birdwood about 75 kilometres north-east of Adelaide.

Classiceligibility Bay to Birdwood

Only those motor vehicles built on or after 1st January 1956 and on or before 31 December 1978 are eligible to take part in the event. The eligibility for the rally be frozen at 1978 was that the rally has been attracting 1800 entries and increasing and to move the eligible date up each rally would mean that large numbers of more modern cars would have qualified and made the rally too large to handle.

Vintage and classic cars are rather like vintage wine like the Penfolds Grange at $850 per bottle –cellar it for 10 or 15 years and it will get even better but some cars are like cheap plonk – if they were ugly and unreliable when new they will never be worth collecting no matter how long you keep them!

Most of the expensive cars like the Ferrari and the Bugatti are Classic cars from the day they were built – you just have wait 25 years.

Volvos sold in Australia that are classics that can be driven every day are the 122s, P1800 and the 144 models. They are fun to drive and parts are still available from a firm in Sydney.

Grumpy: veteran, vintage or classic?

Volvo 164.

The 164 was introduced in 1969 and sold until 1975... 46,008 164s were built before the car was superseded by the 264 in 1975. The 164 was Volvo’s first venture into the luxury segment since the end of PV 60 production in 1950, and was the first six-cylinder Volvo since the PV800 last produced in 1958.

The front could be described “as a only mother could love”. It was introduced as a competitor for Mercedes and BMWs and was well equipped and finished. Despite being relatively heavy, the 164 gave favourable fuel economy compared to other 6-cylinder European cars of similar dimensions such as the BMW 530. This was back in the early 1970s when petrol was cheap. Today they are worth keeping as a display car but are too thirsty to drive every day.

The advantage of owning these classics is that they shared many of the same mechanicals. For example you can fit a 144 2litre motor to 122 in place of its original 1800cc motor.

A very rare classic is the 444 and 544 series. The examples in Australia were imported from overseas and were good examples of Volvo’s post World War 2 design. There are probably only 5 or 6 in the country.

So there you have it; find a Volvo that is 25 years old in top condition and enjoy driving one of the world’s classic cars.

The big question is will any of the current cars still be around in 25 or 50 years? The big problem is that even the cheaper and simpler cars built in 2016 have computers and very complex motors, transmissions and suspensions. The bodies may last but who will be able to repair a very old computer?

PINNACLES OF AUTOMOTIVE DE-SIGN BY VOLVO – THE CLASSICS AND THE MODERNThe November 2016 General Meeting provided the opportunity to celebrate the production anniversaries of 2 classic series of Volvos and an appearance by a 2017 Volvo S90.Billy Smythe from the ULR Automotive Group, kindly brought along a new S90 for Club mem-bers to check out. There was sufficient time before the start of the meeting for members to have a good look at the car defined as the “pinnacle of automotive design” and expressed by Thomas Ingenlath (Senior VP Design, Volvo Car Group) as “we don’t want to fit in, we want to stand out”. Also, Club members celebrated the 60th an-niversary of the Volvo 120 series and the 50th anniversary of the Volvo 140 series - these classics continue to stand out as affordable club cars. Club Register Captains Philip Perkins (120 series) and Heino Nowatzky (140 series) pro-vided an overview of the characteristics and the charm of ownership of these cars, before the celebratory cutting of the anniversary cake.Doug Miller

I have previously written a couple of articles about the build-up of my 262 Bertone with the Chevy 350 small block so some bits have been covered before.

Three years ago I started, shouldn’t take long I thought as it was my second conversion and I had most of the bits etc. Wrong!

Along the way I thought of improvements so here we are, not quite finished.

I already had the 350SB, I rebuilt it, added some more minor performance bits, plenty of shiny bits.

Fitting the engine was straight forward already having the mounts etc.

This time just using the V6 radiator, the previous version had a larger custom radiator as I then lived in Mildura.

I had a much nicer 75mm. custom exhaust system fabricated, along with extractors

A VS Commodore Getrag five speed manual this time. A bit of a fiddle, starter motor on other side of bell housing. This also meant a custom clutch master cylinder, X-member, tailshaft is a modified 740 using the 740 centre bearing on a modified 240 mount.

Then I started on the suspension. I covered the front Kaplehenke coil-overs previously, well they have now gone. Graham Berry has them on the orange 240 panelvan. I still have the longer A-arms for more camber as previously documented and currently lowered stock struts.

I’m in the process of custom building new ones based on S90 struts with jumbo brakes. 7/9 series have superior hub/stub axles. Jumbos brakes in my experience are more than adequate and no adapting required (saving some money for other things ).

Rear suspension - I got a little carried away here. The exhaust required some more space so I have coil-overs where the original spring mounts were. There was not enough suspension travel to my mind with after market items so new trailing arms were fabricated which address this. I have Kaplehenke adjustable upper torque rods. In my studies of suspension systems it is pointed out that solid rear axles have a very high roll centre, too high compared to the front so the panhard bar has been mounted lower.

Where the panhard bar crosses the centreline in this type of suspension dictates the RC height.

240 Commando bumpers are great, really good for their purpose but not very

aesthetic looking and heavy so I trimmed them up, more work than it looks. So much so that I had moulds made for fibreglass versions. They will be available shortly for

sale in fibreglass/carbon fibre .

Of course they required a bit work modifying later type mounts.

Lots of little stuff - remote oil filter and oil lines, clutch lines, VS Commodore flywheel slightly different than Chev., special fuel pressure regulator for converting from injection to carbie, re-routing AC hoses, various brackets for ancillaries are all custom made, twin thermo fans and shroud, remote engine breathers from rocker covers plus a few other things.

What’s left to do -

I’m waiting on the Auto electrician to do the wiring for the engine loom.

Some springs for the rear coil-overs. I want to weigh front and rear for this but close to stock rate would do.

I currently have stock type front struts with 175lb springs from an earlier Chev-Volvo I did, they were fine. I will commission it with them, the rear suspension bits need painting, re-assemble the diff. A bit of tidying up here and there, polish up the shiny bits. Hopefully ready for Flemington. There is a clearance issue for the rear wheel arches with 16” Geminis, this needs to be addressed before they are fitted.

Vehicle safety inspections are an important event on the Club’s annual calendar enabling members to have their cars inspected by qualified and experienced Volvo specialists. Voldat opened its doors on Saturday December 3rd for its traditional “summer safety check”. Eighteen (18) Club members attended on the day with most cars ending up on the hoist for a close inspection by John Johnson and Mark Richardson.

Club vehicle safety checks provide the opportunity to learn more about our cars and to get good advice of what needs attention to ensure safe motoring and, importantly for those members with cars on Club Permits to ensure their cars are compliant with VicRoads eligibility guidelines.

All cars inspected on the day came away with a list of items requiring attention – some

more urgent than others. It is important for Club members to now follow-up on the advice provided by John and Mark. The Club’s Committee looks forward to increased future attendance by Club members at vehicle safety inspection days and thanks Voldat for its continued support in providing the “summer safety check”.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ADELAIDE

Late last year ended briskly with many of us volunteering in the annual Christmas Pageant and three other events in quick succession. We joined in on a Lolvo Cruise and lunch stop which

took us through the Adelaide Hills, taking in the scenery (I even spotted a koala), was a really great roll up and cross section of different cars, and a great meal. Special thanks to Michael Bennett for organising the event. We also participated in an All Euro Day display at Glenelg, and that was great to see a variety of cars, both new and old, modified and standard. We had a good Volvo presence that we hope will increase in the future as there was plenty of interest and questions asked, a really well organised day. Lastly our club Christmas Lunch, where we had 38 people for a catch up and chin wag, was great to see some new faces however would be great to see more of the club getting behind the events organised for all of us to enjoy.

Sadly this was the last time we will see much of a few members of the club who have been regular attendees at most events. Ralph and Renate are starting their next chapter heading for a new venture in Tassie – a B&B based at the Historic Hunters Hotel in Queenstown. And John and Joan (who have been a huge part of the events organising for many years) now plan to reduce their presence to club events. A big thank you to both couples and their families for the input and friendship you have added to our club over the years. Thanks also to those in the club who do contribute their time too, even providing photos from events, they really help provide lasting memories. Many of us are relaxing and enjoying events (which is of course what events are all about) whilst a few are bustling about making sure things run as smoothly as they can and snapping pics for future reference. Your actions certainly don't go unnoticed. I look forward to saying Hi to you all soon at an event this year. Amazons for life Chris

WELCOME : Joining the Car Club recently were: Sam Gue of Leabrook with a Gold 71 1800E currently undergoing a full restoration; Cliff & Jennifer Mayes from Coromandel Valley with a growing fleet of V70 & 850’s; and Peter Goeldi re-joins us after a several year absence with a 63 122S sedan.

In saying that I have not yet given up hope… I would love to see the Volvos return to the grid next year, even if it means running an alternative engine. :( Remember, have fun with your hobbies and make the most of your loved ones.. Life is too short not to. Cheers Rob Eldridge President

I hope everybody had a fantastic Christmas and is well placed for the start of the new year. This is the start of SSVC’s 4th Calendar year, and the year in which the National Rally comes to us. It has taken a lot of work to date and there is still plenty left to do… On top of this the club is planning a bunch of other events throughout the year... Exciting times. I would like to thank all of our members for being a part of the club in 2016, with a special mention to those in our committee and those who regularly attend our monthly club meetings. An extra special thanks to Mike Beamish, he has been a member of our committee since early last year. Mike has relocated and as such has resigned from his committee position. Mike will remain a valuable member of the club and I expect to see him at future events with his roof down (rain, hail or shine). The last weekend in November saw what could be the last of Volvos foray into the Supercars Championship, it was certainly the last for the driver that has brought so much to our brand in Australian racing circles. While it is disappointing to see all of that go, I would like to thank Garry, Barry and all of the GRM team for everything they have done for us over the past few years. I understand they are a factory sponsored racing team and with that comes a certain requirement to repre-sent the brand but their willingness to fit us in to team tours, car displays etc is not a given. They are a great bunch of people and deserve an extra thank you.

The Poker Run was scheduled for mid November and was looking to be a great event. Sadly, a weather warning went out the day prior with storms predicted right when we would be out having fun. This left the organisers in a tough position and ultimately the decision was made to postpone the event. Much to our dismay the so called storm ended up being a fizzer but knowing our luck it would have been the big one had we decided to go ahead. Thank you to our members for understanding. The good news is the Poker run has been re-scheduled for the 12th of March. Details are already up on the Club Facebook page. Please come along as the more we get for this one the better it will be. SSVC Poker Run

I hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas and New Year surrounded by great people, plenty of cheer and too much food and/or drink. It was during the festive season that I realised how affected my extended family had been by scam attempts of varying natures. I thought that this may make an interesting topic for a quick article. Scams vary from phone, email, website and face to face. Many people know when they receive a phone call or email which doesn't seem right they are not to provide any details and hang up or delete immediately. The thing that struck me as strange was the lack of knowledge around resources such as www.scamwatch.gov.au, the ability to block international inbound calls, have your phone provider trace calls and block them, or the ability to hang up and call the supposed company directly to make further enquiries. The other concern for many is skimmed or copied bank cards resulting in fraud on your account. While banks do their best to manage these threats they are sadly not always avoidable. If you notice something on your card or account that isn't yours call or visit your bank immediately. In most cases they will cancel the card and reissue a new one. Bank policies vary with some providing the money back immediately while the charges are being investigated and others only reissue the funds once the investigation has been completed so it is important to check with the bank during the reporting process. The most important thing is to ensure you never provide personnel information to people over the phone or email that you do not know and trust and to report anything suspicious immediately. Jay Holland.

SSVC planned a re-visit to 2015’s Christmas venue, Pelican Park at Redcliff for a BBQ lunch. Numbers were down somewhat including our president who was forced to spend the day repairing storm damage on his property – the joys of a summer Christmas season. A small in-house raffle was conducted with many draws being made to find three Individual winners. I am sure that the separated tickets were “magnetised” to stay next to a previous number. Early BBQ, great cheesecake and eventual winners allowed a reasonable early home departure before the next round of storms. Estelle Dempster

Who could ask for more than delicious food, good friends, the sea air and a awesome view.... The SSVC met up by the Wynnum Wadding Pool overlooking Moreton Bay, after a great chat and catch up we headed down to one of the many fish and chip shops along the foreshore to pick up some grub then continued back to eat and take in more of that view!!! We stayed on in Wynnum for a while longer before jumping in the cars and heading for a light cruise, heading down through Manly and out towards Cleveland point. It was actually quite a sight having our Volvos lined up in front of the lighthouse. From there we took off once again. Now this was when I had planned to put a lovely little cherry into the cruise, West Mt Cotton Road, one of my favourite little drivers roads in south east Brisbane. Plenty of ups and downs, left and rights later we arrived at our final destination, IKEA!!! Everyone jumped out of their cars with huge smiles and we concluded this small event a success, even with my Parents getting a little lost.... Cheers to everyone that came out, you are the reason it was such a fun after-noon. Jared Wilson

I am going to the National Volvo Rally in Warwick THIS YEAR! This is the Yellow 1978 240 Volvo speaking again but I am so excited. I hope that if you didn’t get a registration for the Rally for Christmas, that you give yourself a New Year gift and send in your registration ASAP. My owner, John, gave me the PROMISE of some TLC both inside and out as his Christmas present. I am looking smart with my new tyres but I am keen to be detailed ready for the rally. I am a VIP car as “they” plan to make me the welcome car in the city of my first owner. To be honest, the success of this biennial rally is now up to all of you, the readers of your club magazine. Registrations and replies to the registration form, selecting your involvement and activities in the weekend, is now up to you. Please remember that most of the organisers have jobs and families beside their Volvos and so volunteer time is crucial. Even the retirees involved have other demands on their time. SO – PLEASE, PLEASE act ASAP and you will see me in Warwick in May. John & Estelle Dempster

I’m Going Home in 2017… Are you coming with me?

The Volvo 960, along with its 940 counterpart, is the final Volvo to carry the traditional 3 digit naming style. Other than a few little differences that only the most discerning Volvo enthusiast would pick, the facelifted 960 was identical to the S90, Volvo’s final RWD car. This essentially makes it the most refined RWD car Volvo produced.

Fortunately, these cars were very expensive new and as such many (but certainly not all) have been well looked after over their 20 odd year life-time.

Ryan and his Dad Graeme, like many Volvo owners in QLD have GLT Car Centre to thank for this vehicle. It was spotted on the GLT notice board a little over 2 1/2 years ago.

“This is the third Volvo in our family. We had a 264 and a 360 and now this 960, one the last rear wheel drive Volvos. It is quite simply more car than anybody should ever need unless you have a big family, are towing a heavy trailer or going offroading. It has all the luxury and comfort that I’ll ever want. The performance from that silky smooth 3 litre straight 6 is great and more than enough for our roads. The handling is, for a car of this bulk, great for everyday use and highway running and the brakes are simply the best I have ever had in a car. Then there is the safety. It gives you a great feeling of comfort knowing that you are driving one of the safest cars on the road despite it being 20 years old”

Unfortunately the car was damaged badly during a severe hail storm in December 2014. “Every panel on the car was hammered by cricket ball size hail stones, never broke any glass or plastic, lucky I guess”. “The insurance company was going to make it a statutory write off. Have since spent over $5000 getting it straight again”

Apart from the damage repairs, and a handbrake drum failure, the car has been incredibly reliable. Ryan and Graeme have retinted the win-dows and added a towbar.

Their current mission is to get it as close to perfect as possible in time for the National Rally in May. Luckily there is not too much left to do. Cant wait to see it there.

President’s Report Our club, amongst celebrating its 30 years, held its AGM on Sunday 16 October 2016. This marked the end of 10 years for Yours Truly as President, every moment of which I have enjoyed. There are no startling changes to our committee for the coming year. Our club remains vibrant with a strong core-membership who ensure the success of our club and I thank those people. I look forward to cele-brating the 50th year of the club! My avid followers will not be surprised at my next topic, being mainte-nance. Here are some tips. Firstly, open your bonnet. Find the reservoirs for the brake and clutch and open them up. Is the level up to just below the top? Is the fluid clear? Hydraulic fluid should be flushed every 2 years to prevent pre-mature failure of components, and stopping power! Next check your oil. Is it at the right level on the dipstick? Is it brown and slippery or is it thick and black in which case you urgently need to change it. Are the carbs clean on the outside or is there a pinkish stain which would indicate leaks? This can be dangerous if not properly looked at. Check the fan belt. It should feel firm, and there should not be cracks or fraying on it. How are your tyres? How old are they? If they are more than 10 years old, it may be time to think about replacing them. This is always good as modern tyres are smooth and quiet compared to the old tyres our cars came with. Whilst you are giving the old girl some lovin’, carefully wash the body. This is a good opportunity to check for any signs of rust, which if minor you can touch up with some paint.

25/11/16 Saturday Christmas Lunch and Wild Drive to Taboon Middle Eastern Restaurant at Robina The day was overcast and a humid time of year. Fortunately mother nature smiled and we had a good turn-out. Some of us met at the BP Stapylton around 10.00am and a few drove directly to Robina. Thank you to everyone that made it today. 1800S - Vicki and George, 1800S - Peter and Katrina, 1800S - Deb and Dave, 1800ES - Richard, 122S - Pat and Ian, 123GT - Gavin, 120 Wagon Maida and Peer, C30 Julie and Martin, Ruby, Due soon to be Volvo Parents - Bev and Mark. After coffee and snapchats we headed to Tamborine through Canungra. We stopped at Wongelpong for a quick photoshoot. Due to traffic it was hard to all keep together and we arrived at our destination. We adjourned to the restaurant just prior to the heavens opening and got into the serious business of seating (not next to Dave thanks!) , ordering drinks and selecting food from the vast menu offering. The food and service was perfect. After our epic food journey it was time for more Volvo chats. Oscar our beloved new boy, 1964 120 wagon was admired today. We were very excited that we could take him on his first official club run. Peer can now relax and enjoy his time with Oscar. It took Peer one and half years to do the full restoration. A short sweet description on our boy. Under the hood is a B20 reconditioned original engine. He has a 4 speed electrical overdrive. The body is with new grey paint original colour and the interior with new red leather seats. It has chrome mag wheels. The car has been modified in a lowering suspension. There is no carpet it has rubber flooring. In the rear floor is polished wood slats. Special feature is the vintage suitcase speaker. And to top it off it has classic headlight eyebrows. Oscar is a real jaw dropper. Thanks to George and Vicki for recommending this amazing restaurant and special thanks goes to Gavin for or-ganising today. HAPPY VOLVOING !! MAIDA SKAARUP

The South East Queensland members of the 1800 – 120 club are getting involved with the Oodnadatta Challenge. Our route has shorter driving days and includes nights with the overseas visitors in Adelaide, Warrnambool and Melbourne. I have included the proposed route with expected stops and we are well advanced with accommodation enquiries. We will have a mixture of models and some will be towing caravans. The entire route is on bitumen roads and includes a number of well known tourist destinations. Our plan is to have a touristy drive through Australia. The gaps in the route from Wollongong to Brisbane are to allow everyone to go their own way home. If anyone is interested in joining our group for all or part of the journey please con-tact Gavin Janson at [email protected]

123GTs Heading North The Queensland sunshine is having an effect on the homes of 123 GT’s in Australia. Earlier this year I purchased a 123GT from the original owner from new in Tasmania. John Earthrowl had purchased the car on the 29th July 1968 from a Volvo dealership in Subiaco for $3,965.00. He loved his 48 years of driving his Volvo all over Australia. In 2011 he had George Minassian do a full restoration on the car. The car had its official debut with the Queensland members of the 1800-120 club at the Christmas run and lunch. John has given me all the documentation on the car and I will have the full story of the car in an upcoming edition of our magazine. The new custodian, Gavin Janson.

Alec Lowe purchased this 123 GT from John Green in New South Wales in 2015. Alec is currently holidaying in England where he grew up as a child and forwarded to me the following story of how his interest in Volvos began. Last week I visited the garage where at the age of 13 I had a part time job de waxing and detailing new cars for the showroom of Bengry Mo-tors, the then agents for Volvo, Saab, Ford, and Volkswagen. As I had learned to drive long ago on farm tractors I was allowed to drive the new cars around in the yard. I loved the quiet starter and sweet engine on new 122's and also loved to give the Saab 96 two strokes a good rev! I also never forgot how I was often driven home at 10pm on a freezing winter night in a 122s after pumping petrol all day. Even at that age I couldn't believe how torquey that B18 engine was. Hence my renewed interest in Amazons today and I have not been disappointed.

Yet another 123 GT came to Queen-sland this year on the back of Neil Summer-son’s trailer. While at Cessnock for the clubs 30th birthday cele-bration, he and George Minassian made a short trip into Sydney to salvage a 123 GT that had been unused for many years. It came with the original motor, complete history and the body in good condition. It might be a while before we see it driving on the roads.

I'd heard about the Buzz in the gearstick on 1800's, apparently it sounds like a large bug caught in the gear knob and it only happens at particular revs. I hadn't suffered any infestation in Lola (70-1800E) until I removed the gearbox and enthusiastically cleaned everything - that started my encounter with the BUG in the gear stick -BUZzzzzzzzzzzz.

When the gear stick came out, I diligently washed and cleaned the accumulated 45 years of grunge off everything and gave it all a thorough inspection. There were some cracks on the inside curve of the Large Locking Nut which had chewed out sections of the domed washer beneath. So while the gearbox was being rebuilt, I set about refurbishing the gear stick setup. I carefully ground the sharp edges of the cracks and reground the curve to match a new domed washer. A satisfying afternoon's work - Job Done!

Imagine my dismay when I test drove Lola with her new gearbox. Gearbox was great, but a Bug had been trapped in there somewhere and the gear stick now Buzzzzzzed furiously around 3000 rpm.

I reviewed the chat lists and consulted with mechanical types, one school of thought suggested the buzz originated from the bottom of the stick where it engages the selectors, another suggested the buzz came from the spring and domed washer, and yet another thought it had to be from a large bug caught in the gear knob.

Since I had ground away some of the underside of the Locking Nut, I guessed I'd actually reduced the compression on the spring, so this was probably where the Bug had snuck into the works.

I removed the gear stick, cleaned everything, fitted a nylon washer under the spring to increase the tension, covered the spring ends with rubber adhesive, to reduce vibration, then smothered everything with sticky grease and refitted the gearstick - confident this time I had "killed the bug" !

I test drove the car ... there was a minor buzz at about 3200 rpm, but I figured I could live with that. That was until we set off for the drive from Melbourne to Cessnok for the 1800-120 Club 30th Anniversary Bash, half an hour into the trip the BUZzzz came back with a vengeance, right on cruising speed and this was one angry Bug, louder than it had ever been. The whole trip was a 2 person affair - one person driving while the passenger held/pushed/pressured the gear stick into silence. Something had to be done.

Back home, I added a second Nylon Washer - no change - then a third, and I covered everything with Molybdenum grease - all to no avail, that Bug was going nowhere.

So I needed to get serious to resolve this, I've got to find where it lives. I decided to start on the top section of the gear shifter - the section above the Ball - I need to isolate the spring and domed washer so they can't vibrate against the shaft.

I fitted some foam rubber tube over the shaft and down through the middle of the spring, then pressed the domed washer over that and glued the spring, top and bottom, with rubber

adhesive.

Nothing was going to vibrate. I smothered everything with Molybdenum grease and fitted the gearstick

and test drove. No change, that Bug was still angry - same volume, same pitch, same rpm.

OK, so now I know the buzz is not happening in the Spring / Domed washer section, it must be lower down.

What's the Buzz.... tell me what's happening? By Warren Townsend

Page 37: A U S T R ALI A NO.230 JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2017...March Wed 1 - Night Meeting, 8PM. Guest Speaker: TBA. South Camberwell Tennis Club, 332 Burke Rd, Glen Iris (enter from Bickleigh

I'd noticed that each time I removed the stick, the bottom of the Ball - where it fits the Socket - was always shinny and clean of any grease. I began to wonder if the 3 nylon washers created too much pressure and forced grease from between the ball and socket. Once again I consulted with some

mechanical types, this time with the gear stick in hand. They were quite surprised that there was no bushing between the ball and socket, most cars - they said - have a nylon bush to keep metal from metal and to stop it buzzing.

So now I'm formulating a plan. I suspected the Ball/Socket interface to be where that Bug lives, so I need to insulate the interface to exorcise the Bug. I need to keep grease between the 2 metal surfaces and keep the 2 metal surfaces apart from each other.

I stripped everything again and got back to a good clean start. I purchased some extra heavy duty grease, some rubber sheet and some Teflon (barbeque sheet) - I'm going to make some gaskets and swat this bug.

Let's start with a rubber gasket under the Gear Stick Socket on the Selector Cover. My theory is... this gasket is going to help hold grease in contact with the ball as it pivots.

I cut the centre to match the diameter of the gear shaft, and radial cuts to allow the gear shaft

to pivot unimpeded. The tricky part was to get this in place under the selector cover without dropping it into the abyss of the selector shafts. Some surgical locking clamps came in very handy, and with a liberal

bead of rubber adhesive around its edge, and securely clamped, I pushed the gasket through the socket hole and with some strategically bent metal rod inserted through the hole in the

gasket, I pressed from underneath to get good contact between the rubber adhesive and the underside of the selector cover - 24 hours to let that set.

Now to keep the Ball and Socket insulated from each other. I made 2 Teflon "gaskets" to fit snugly around the shaft Ball. And now I'm ready to put this plan into action.

I fitted 2 Nylon Washers above the spring - to compensate for what I had ground away - then fitted the 2 Teflon gaskets around the Ball, one over the other and with Heavy Grease between - well, heavy grease everywhere, then, just for good measure, some more heavy grease. The Gearstick slid snugly into the socket and locked nicely in place with the Large Nut. I was quite relieved and pleased to find the action was very smooth and no problems selecting gears.

And after a few test drives I can happily declare ... that Bug is DEAD! Dead quiet!

Maybe the Heavy Grease on its own would have been enough to quell the Bug - I doubt it, but I do know that I wasn't about to take it all apart again just to answer that question. I do wonder if the Teflon gaskets are a long term solution, in that regard only time will tell, but for now I'm revelling in the silence - that Bug is slain!

It is with great sadness we have to report the passing of our club member, John Todhunter who was 77 years of age. He had been ill for some time and was admitted to a nursing home only a week before he died. John was one of the original founding members of the Volvo 1800 Car Owners Association in 1986 which eventually evolved into the Volvo 1800/120 Club. In March 1986 I purchased my Volvo 1800ES in Sydney and I showed a photo of it to a Chemist in Sunnybank Hills. Only a few days later John rang me and told me that a group of 1800 owners were thinking about forming a club and would I be interested. You bet! What had happened was that John had taken a film to be developed to the same Chemist shop and when he picked up the prints he showed the owner photos of his treasured 1800. The Chemist told him that Kevin had “one of those” so John immediately contacted me. The club was officially formed a couple of months later and in 1987, with just 22 members, John was elected President. John was a very keen member, he always promoted the club and it went from strength to strength. At that time John & I lived in adjacent suburbs in Brisbane and we became firm friends for many years but then we moved out of Brisbane to Beachmere while John & Lyn moved in the other direction to Ipswich and sadly distance then dictated that we did not see each other very much. President’s Report for 2016

First and foremost let me wish all our Club Members and theirfamilies a Very Merry Christmas and good fortune for the NewYear 2017.The New Year will be shorter that this year and so we have tosqueeze everything we want to get done into a one day shorter time frame. We already know thatnone of us have enough time to do the things we want to do – well now you have less!Looking back over 2016 what did Our Club Achieve. Our Show and Shine – the Moveable Event –

was held in conjunction with the 1800-120 Club and the turnout was just fantastic. And it was a beautiful day. The new VOLVO flagslooked great and I believe everyone who attended thought the venue was most suitable.Speaking of venues – our meeting venue has been upgraded – and upped in price- but I think everyone who attends the monthly gettogether really enjoys the night – the food from the bistro has improved and I encourage all Volvo Club members to become ArenaClub members to gain the benefit of the discounts. And the Arena Club people really appreciate it as well.A band of Brothers and Sisters attended the Gnoo Blas Classic in Orange – it is just at the wrong time of year for traveling in daytimein our classic cars – without air-con.Arthur and Judy led us on a Magical Mystery Tour – Jan thinks it is the best event we’ve ever had!The Christmas in July was a hoot in Oberon – gotta do it again in 2017- just hope we don’t get the heat-wave conditions again – thetemp maxed at 11°C!!Jan and I were away but our P1800S did attend the Hunter Valley Bash put on by the 1800-120 Club. (Thanks to Gerry and Margarita)By all reports it was a great event and the SRCDM even managed a ‘highly commendable’.Tony and Olga Corona once again invited us back to their beautiful house for a great Christmas Party – and we had a visit fromSANTA – who sadly forgot his pants but wore a lovely dark pink set of tights!!! ‘Nuff saidI need to say to our ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE & ASSOCIATE COMMITTEE MEMBERS for theirdevotion to duty and friendship over the past year as well as all our fantastic & friendly members -THANK YOU -THANK YOU -THANKYOU.It has been great having Gerry as Vice President – and I thank him for stepping in and running the meetings in my absence. We had great fun inaugurating King Arthur and Queen Judy into the Hall of Life Membership and I am pleased to announce thattonight we will be similarly inducting Gerry Lister into the Hall of Life Membership.I hope everyone appreciates the thrill I know everyone gets as I do when we enter our meeting room and see it full of members ta lkingaway and really having a very pleasant social occasion, because this is what our meeting is. It is not and I hope never will be somedreary dissertation on the merits of 1¾” SU twin carbies over twin 43mm Dellortos – because we all know the answer anyway – don’twe Dani. Albeit there is always plenty of discussion and members available to help out with info on car problems, challenges or gettinghold of a new part or bit for a resto or fix. There will always be someone who can help.Congratulations to the Ashley Yelds/Andy White driving the ex- Works Volvo 122S and Kevin Elliott/George Minassian in the also ex -works Volvo 142S for their participation and in and upholding the Volvo Name in the re-run Southern Cross Rally 50th Anniversary –there were 3 other Volvos – 240s as I recall. A large WELL DONE and thanks to the teams.Look I know I am not half as funny as I think I am but I really, really do love going to the meetings and look forward to seeingeveryone. AND I need a new part secretary.I ran an advertisement last year about this time for a new Club Secretary. Julie is finding her total workload a bit onerous and wishesto shed some of it. She has been just amazing.‘Jules’ as we affectionately know her will continue with the magazine and I hope we can ask her to work up the occasional flyer for ourevents – but there is a Secretarial role up for grabs – and it can be split up to make it easier for everyone. Syd Neale is happy to takeon the membership officer’s role as it compliments treasurer quite well – assuming he is re-elected of course! Our finances are in good shape thanks to Syd’s excellent stewardship of Treasurer. Please remember to get your memberships in for 2017.As your new exec-committee – which I suspect might look quite similar to the existing – needs a sub committee for its assistance andalso you get to go out an extra night every second month, please give consideration to coming along as we need NEW ideas – NEWplaces to visit- NEW things to do.It is at the committee meetings that everyone’s ideas get a full airing. Thanks to Graham Bennett, Ray and Viv Zavattaro, Boyd &Karen Symington & Arthur & Judy for their continual input and support - we just can’t run the Club without you. And special mention toBoyd and Karen for always being prepared to do that bit extra – you both know how much I personally appreciate what you do – it isjust a shame Russ Arnold keeps hogging your hoist! Thanks for your confidence in The Club’s Executive Committee – I hope we are steering the Car Club in the right direction.See you in February at the First Monthly meeting – we don’t have one in January. Bring along your Christmas Presents and we canhave a show and tell!! See you on the Highways of Life , Ted Warner

AND John Davis Volvo dealership in Orange is very generously offering one full case of local wine (andmight I add, having sampled the wines from the region, they are exceptional) to each and every Volvocar attending the Gnoo Blas Classic. You can’t do much better than that people. So, get moving and get yourself booked in.

March 12th (Sunday) - Show ‘N’ ShineWe are going to the Australian Motorlife Museum in Kembla Grange. Entry to the Museum is $10.

April - Uncle Arthur’s Mystery Tour(Date is yet to be determined)It will be the North West this year but, just where to is a mystery. I guess that’s why it’s called a Mystery Tour. Ido know it’s a great day and loads of fun so don’t miss out on this one.

The Christmas PartyThe day was perfect - we nearly got the food correct - just some small excesses- but everyone’s contribution was just sensational-beautiful fresh prawns, lovely leg ham, Larry’s amazing beef and secret sauce, what a treat! Giant strawberries, gorgeous fruit cake, trifles, profiteroles- YUM- salads, fruit & cheese platters -giant strawberries - it was a feast.

Santa’s visit was spectacular particularly because he forgot his trousers and we could see that Santa wears red tights under his pantsand he had a very big bell!!

Several members took advantage of the pool to cool off and the water was the perfect temperature. Our host provided all swimmerswith a buoyancy noodle -which came in handy as a water spray to douse the girls cooling their feet, sitting on the pool’s edge

No drownings were reported - well none so far as Tony and Olga, who again were very generous giving the Club use of their beautifulhouse, probably haven’t cleaned the pool.

Please put the date for next year in your diary and keep it free.

The luxury car maker is trialling an app that lets Volvo owners order gas and other services from their phones.A new smart phone app may soon mean Volvo car owners no longer have to take their cars to get gas or a service. A pilot program inthe San Francisco Bay area will allow 300 Volvo owners to order services such as remote fuel delivery, valet car cleaning, and evenVolvo maintenance from the new Volvo Concierge Services app. This enables a one-time-use digital key, which is location and time-specific, to be sent to the relevant service provider so that they can access thevehicle. When they have completed their task, the car can be returned to wherethe customer left it (or a completely new location, at the customer’s request) andlocked. The digital key then expires. "Volvo Concierge Services will mean thatyou never have to stand out in the rain to fill your car again," said LexKerssemakers, Volvo Car USA’s chief executive officer.

Although the pilot program only offers fuel delivery, valeting, and servicing,Volvo expects other service to be added to the smart phone app in the future. The company’s research found that 70% of consumers surveyed want to beable to order gas from their phones, 56% want to arrange for their car to betaken away for maintenance from an app, and 49% liked the idea of providingaccess to their vehicle from an app so that it can be moved to another location.

BACK IN the day, you could order a car in (or for) Australia for collection in Europeand then use the car for a working holiday before shipping it ‘home’ to Australia. That’s pretty much what Mervyn Mitchell did with this Volvo: he bought this wagonbrand new in London in 1972 and used it for 12 months for travelling around Europebefore having it shipped home via Volvo.

In total, Mervyn has driven the legendary Swedish wagon more than 230,000 miles, with the original mechanicals.

Not only has he’s heard all the Volvo-driver jokes he has a keen sense of humour, too: "I keep a bowling hat in the back of it just to be a funny bastard!" he laughs.

Members for Life

Editor’s Note: At the GM on 7th December I read out a Thank You note from Arthur & Judy. I have published it here for all ourmembers who were’t able to attend the meeting. Jules.

It is certainly a singularpleasure to have received theunanimous agreement fromthe Club’s committee to grantthis award to our King Arthurand Queen Judy.

Arthur and Judy are true iconsof the Volvo Club NSW in itsmany iterations over the past40 odd years. There supportfor the club has beenunwavering. They support allevents and Judy has been aprolific provider of articles forthe magazine- no doubt ablyassisted by Arthur.

There is no aspect of the Club’s life that Arthur and Judy have not thrownthemselves behind

Also A & J organized a fantastic mystery tour earlier this year – and Ihope another for next year-

I extend to Arthur and Judy our Club’s warmest and most enthusiasticcongratulations for their amazingly long loyalty and commitment to ourClub and trust they accept this award with all the affection and well wishesof our members. A “well done” is truly deserved. Ted Warner

The Club became incorporated under State Law in the early 1990’sand its aims expanded to cover other activities such as social outings, car displays, junior driver instruction, etc.In 1997 the name of the Club was changed to its present "The Volvo Car Club of NSW Inc." to more appropriately coverits operations and to meet the desire of Volvo Car Australia in standardising the car clubs in the various states ofAustralia. This RHD car had been specially prepared for competition use bythe factory in Sweden, featuring a powerful 140 bhp engine, close-ratio gearbox, uprated suspension and big 18-gallon (82-litre) fuel tank. Itcould do 120 mph (190km/h) and had excellent fuel economy. Scuderia Veloce boss David McKay and Bill Orr drove it to outright victory in the

1966 Lowood 4 Hour race in Queensland, winning by more than a lap fromstrong GT 500 Cortina and BMC competition. Sadly it was destroyed in abig crash during practice for the 1968 Surfers Paradise 12 Hour race."The 122 was an amazing car, beautifully designed and with a huge heart.

On paper it didn’t go and shouldn’t have been able to do the things that itdid with only 1.8 litres, but it was so well balanced. Everything just clicked. Ithought those Swedes were very smart and after all these years I still do.

1968 LONDON TO SYDNEY MARATHON

I believe the idea was thought up over lunch by Sir Frank Packer of theDaily Telegraph in Sydney and, I think Lord Aitken of the Daily Express inLondon. We were the first entry from anywhere in the world and, I have aphotograph of Sir Frank Packer accepting it from André and myself. Thereason it ever actually took place was probably due to Packer’sdetermination to make it happen.”

“I drove a 144 B20 which was one of three factory prepared cars that Volvo built for the Amoco Team from Sydney. Ken Tubman finished 10th

and my car was a few minutes behind in 13th place. The 144 was very strong however it did have a weak point. This was the Front CrossMember. We worked on the problem and in 1970 I took a 142S Factory Car with John Laws and Bill Nolan in the Ampol Round Australia Trial. We finished 12th outright out of 230 starters and, the Cross Member survived.”“I took the 1968 Marathon Car (144), in the 25th Anniversary re-run of London toSydney in 1993 where the car finished strongly but an accident in Belgium anda rollover in South Australia kept us back in the field. I still drive this car fromtime to time and it amazes me how good it is.”

“I can honestly say that I believe the Volvo 120 Series is probably one of thebest cars of all time and even after 42 years of driving them. They never ceaseto amaze me. I would like to think that I have contributed to the developmentand success of Volvo in Australia and that it continues for many years to come.”

“Volvo 1800S - although I think the 122S is the best car of all I have been usingmy ’64 1800S in the AROCA 6 Hour Races, Targa Tasmania and the EastCoast Targa Tarmac rallies. This car, like my other competition cars, has neverlet me down and out performs many cars that it is not supposed to.”Gerry Lister is the first to have had a racing Volvo in Australia !
