A very special ordinary girl
1. In some ways, Fran is a pretty normal 15-year-old: she’s a student at a normal high school, she sometimes fights with her parents, and she doesn’t know exactly what she wants to be when she grows up. In other ways Fran is pretty unusual: after school, Fran goes online and talks to an audience of over 100,000 people every day.
2. Several years ago Fran started a vlog called fantasticfran. In her vlog she talked about anything and everything – how her day was at school, what movies she saw, and which actors were her favourite. After about a year of vlogging, Fran uploaded a video where she talked about a certain brand of baseball cap that was popular with guys at her school. The silly part, Fran said, was that guys were leaving the sticker on – you know, the sticker that says the size – which you would normally take off after buying. “What’s up with that?” asks Fran in her vlog, and throws her hands up in the air.
3. The vlog about baseball caps changed everything. Before, Fran had about 300 subscribers, mostly friends and family. After, that number jumped to 5,000, and kept climbing. Fran was amazed at the change. And she kept asking the question: “What’s up with that?”
She asked this question about every trend that was supposed to be “cool”. New smartphones, piercings, tattoos, make-up ... she wanted to know two things: 1) Why was this stuff so important? And more importantly: 2) Why she was supposed to buy it? 4. She received a huge number of likes, comments and fans. Now Fran has over 100,000 subscribers, with new people subscribing every day. Some of the comments aren’t from people that like Fran, sometimes people are upset with her. But Fran says that she just ignores the haters, because you can’t be friends with everybody. All of this attention has started to make adults take notice as well. In her latest vlog, Fran told a little story. She said that she got an email from a certain company that sells energy drinks. They had watched her vlog on their product. Fran had tried their newest energy drink, but of course, she wasn’t a big fan. In fact, she had said that her teeth felt sticky after drinking it. Maybe it would make a nice perfume for girls, or hair gel for guys, but it wasn’t a tasty drink. 5. According to Fran, this company asked her in the email what drink she would prefer. What does Fran like? Fran smiled in her vlog as she told the end of the story. She said that she told the company “Thanks, but no thanks.” She wasn’t interested in working with them and her opinion could not be bought. “What’s up with that?” she asked. We hope it stays that way, Fran.
