2 ◆ Update www.sohnnurse.com May 2020

Dear Colleagues,

During the American Revolution, the American essayist, Thomas Paine penned, “These are the times that try men’s souls”. Today, we are fighting a different kind of war, one that could have long lasting effects on the world, just like the American’s winning their war for independence. Today’s pandemic is affecting every aspect of our lives. New terms such as “Social Distancing”, “Safer at Home”, and many more in

efforts to keep society safe from the Corona virus. Nurses around the world are on the front lines caring for those most in need

of comfort and care. Isolated from family and friends, nurses are the people that are there for these vulnerable individuals. My hope and prayers are with each of you.

SOHN continues to work hard to keep each of you informed on what is happening in our organization. As many of you know, Sandye Schwartz is planning to retire from her position after being our Executive Director for many years. The SOHN board of directors has interviewed and voted to accept Margaret Hickey as our new Executive Director. Many of you know Margie as one of our past presidents. Margie has been a member of SOHN for many years and is very excited to take on this new role in her life. Margie will start shadowing Sandye, to learn the role of Executive Director starting July 1st. She will take over starting October 1st. Sandye will still be involved with SOHN and will continue to mentor Margie as needed.

Continuing with upcoming SOHN events, our annual election of officers will begin in July and run through August. The SOHN Board of Directors voted several years ago to begin electronic elections. With so much change in large group gatherings, it now seems fortunate that this change was made, so it will have little effect on our Business Meeting in September.

2020, the Year of the Nurse, is truly becoming a year that we will all remember for a long time. Thanks to the hard work of each nurse and health care worker, lives are being saved. Keep calm and keep doing things to keep yourselves, your families and your patients safe.

My prayers are with each of you,

Dr. Pandian is passionate about educating care providers on the best multidisciplinary approaches to improving outcomes of critically ill patients with airway issues. She also excels in mentoring high school and college students by helping them participate in research, quality improve-ment efforts, and evidence-based projects, and eventually publishing their work successfully. She has served as a director of practice, education, and research for the Johns Hopkins Airway Program that includes the Tracheostomy and Difficult Airway Response Programs. She is currently the associate director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) -Executive and DNP-MBA programs, director of the Research Honors Program, pres-ident of the Sigma Nu Beta at-large chapter, and vice president of the Society of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Nurses. Her entrepreneurial work surrounds developing, implementing, and evaluating various products and programs. She has been an active member of SOHN for the last 11 years. In the 11 years, she has been involved with several committees both at the MD/DC chapter and the national level. At the local chapter, she is currently serving as the President and at the national level, she is serv-ing as a member of education committee, research and practice commit-tee, and the editorial board. She has presented at several conferences and published 50 manuscripts related to tracheostomy and airways. The most important qualifications that she possesses are her interest in the organi-zation and her desire to become an ORL nursing leader. She considers it an honor to serve as a Vice President at the SOHN.

Position Statement:SOHN is a unique nursing organization that supports very specialized

ORL nurses. If elected to serve as the President-Elect, I would support the SOHN organization so that it will be central to the development of national education and research initiatives to fostering the professional growth of the ORL nurses within the organization through association with other insti-tutions and organizations. I will abide by the job description of a President-Elect as described in the SOHN Bylaws. One of my goals, in addition to learning from the SOHN president, is to see that every ORL nurse is engaged in SOHN. ORL nurses like other nurses face challenges such as staffing shortages, lack of control in workplace, and misaligned policies and regulations that can lead to burnout. I would like to use this leadership opportunity to help improve ORL nurses’ experiences and work cultures while embracing inclusiveness and diversity. I also want to increase the visibility of ORL nurses among all nurses and other healthcare professions. SOHN offers a pathway for advancement of ORL nurses, and I would like to be a continuing part of ensuring this vision of a dynamic organization.

Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners 2001-2004Membership Committee Member 2002-2003

Qualifications for this Position:I have experience in many leadership positions within the VA and SOHN.

I have developed the interpersonal skills needed to work with others in times of challenge, to discuss options, and to lead change. In addition, I am able to discuss membership growth ideas, envision mentorship oppor-tunities and provide podium and poster presentations to large groups. Evidence of these group efforts may be noted in the recent achievement of Chapter Excellence Award given to the newly established Southeast Michigan Chapter of SOHN in 2019.

Position Statement:I was introduced to SOHN when I first started with our local ENT depart-

ment at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System in 2000. The ENT care manager told me I needed to join the Society of Otorhinolarynogolgy and Head-Neck Nurses to learn more about ENT and to stay current with the changes in our practice- and she was right. This organization has taught me so much! We are involved in the clinical guideline creation, review and publishing with the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation and critically involved in conducting clinical research for establishing Evidence-Based Practice in our specialty. We provide multiple learning opportunities and programs along with continuing education. This is the place to be for ENT nurses!

I have experienced firsthand the networking and supportive environment of SOHN and have sought and found ways to become a more valued member. The early mentorship I received has inspired me to be a mentor to others in our specialty. From orienting new nurses in our clinic, sharing expertise with the community, establishing a local SOHN chapter and serv-ing in leadership roles within the organization, I have aspired to create an even larger network of nurse-led opportunities.

I look forward to serving as your next President Elect, continuing my growth and continuing that mentorship environment for our nurses. Thank you for considering me for this position.
