In our hurried, mixed up, distracted lives, we oftenfail to find time—or to take time—to think about whatis really important.

Sometimes, at the funeral of a dear friend or lovedone, we may pause to realize how quickly the “hustleand bustle” of our daily lives could end. We may quiet-ly think and meditate on the real issues of life: Why arewe here? What is the real purpose of our lives? Howshould we fulfill that great purpose?

Most of us realize that we need to be more sure ofour relationship with our Creator, and truly draw closeto Him. Most people feel in a general way that theywould like to fulfill His will. So they think about itbriefly… until the phone rings, or it is time for theirfavorite television show, or… So, once again, theydelay their opportunity to draw closer to God.

Let me share with you a very important “key” thathas helped me during my 54 years in Christ’s ministry.I have experienced many trials and “ups and downs” inmy life. I have been terribly disappointed in years pastat the actions of some of my own teenagers and otheryoung people as well. I have been hurt by the slights orindiscretions of others whom I loved. My first wife ofmore than 20 years died in my arms, from cancer. Ihave seen dozens of friends and loved ones turn awayfrom the Truth of God. So there have been plenty of“reasons” to become discouraged.

However, one practice has always helped me to“bounce back.” In fact, it was that very practice thathelped me to become genuinely acquainted with Godin the first place.

That vital “key” is the regular practice of settingaside time and energy to truly seek God.

How?Although King David of ancient Israel experienced

literally hundreds of trials and tests—and profound sor-row—he always “bounced back.” In spite of his humanweaknesses, he became “a man after God’s own heart”(Acts 13:22). Scripture gives us a little glimpse of howDavid related with God: “When I consider Your heav-ens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars,which You have ordained, what is man that You are

mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?For You have made him a little lower than the angels,and You have crowned him with glory and honor”(Psalm 8:3–5).

David took time to meditate and to think on whatwas truly important. He often did this outdoors, in themidst of God’s marvelous creation, looking up at themoon and stars. He did not have a radio or televisionblatting away in the background, or a phone ringing,or other distractions while he was spending time seek-ing God.

When David was hiding out in the wilderness ofJudea, as King Saul was trying to destroy him, Davidliterally cried out to God: “O God, You are my God;early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my fleshlongs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there isno water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, tosee Your power and Your glory. Because Your lov-ingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up myhands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as withmarrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise Youwith joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, Imeditate on You in the night watches. Because Youhave been my help, therefore in the shadow of Yourwings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You;Your right hand upholds me” (Psalm 63:1–8).

This beautiful passage tells us a lot about David’sapproach to God. He would continually “seek” God inalmost every conceivable situation. God was the verycenter of David’s life, the One whom David genuinelyworshiped and adored and with whom he “fellow-shipped.” God was truly the center of David’s life! Wetruly are made in God’s image, and—just as Daviddid—He wants us to learn to walk with Him, talk withHim and fellowship with Him (1 John 1:3).

But, remember! To draw truly close to ourCreator, we must worship Him the way He tells us!Jesus Christ instructed us, “God is Spirit, andthose who worship Him must worship in spirit and

his world is teetering on theedge of oblivion. Thoughtfulmen everywhere are beginningto fear. We are living in the

shadow of violent death. It could comeany day or night. It could come at anymoment. It could be unleashed by thetiniest political spark in a far-distantland. Earlier this year, the Bulletin ofAtomic Scientists moved the famous“Doomsday Clock” forward two minutes,to just five minutes to midnight!

People know we are living in dan-gerous times, and many are restless.Many are thinking more seriously thanever before about many things—not theleast of which is the hereafter.

Increased Religious Interest

This era of violence and potentialworld suicide has helped stimulate an

increased interest in religion in theUnited States. Multitudes are thinkingmore and more about making peacewith somebody, preferably God.

But are people really “making peace”with God—being truly converted, beingchanged, and coming under His divineprotection?

The true Creator God says most reli-gious people are being deceived! YourBible describes our very end times as aperiod when Satan the Devil “deceivesthe whole world.”

Jesus described our day when Hesaid: “For many shall come in My name,saying, I am Christ; and shall deceivemany” (Matthew 24:5, KJV). Yes, themany preachers who claim to be Christ’sministers, who proclaim that He is Christ,but preach their own humanly devisedmessage about Jesus’ person, are deceivingmillions and millions of people!

Yet, in order to be regarded byGod as a true Christian—in orderto be under His protection in theseperilous times, in order to be ledby His Spirit—you must believeand obey the very message JesusChrist brought to this earth fromGod the Father. For Jesus com-manded, “The time is fulfilled,and the kingdom of God is athand. Repent, and believe in thegospel” (Mark 1:15).

In this age, above every other,you desperately need God—Hisguidance, His blessing and Hisprotection! There is no use in “kid-ding” yourself about this fact. Thisis your life—how will you use it?

What You Should Do

You need to face the fact thatyou are very likely one of the mul-titude going the broad way thatleads to destruction (Luke 13:24)!If you are following the crowd—ifyou have the same general attitudetoward religion that most peopledo—then without doubt you aredeceived! For remember that Satanthe Devil “deceives the wholeworld” (Revelation 12:9).

Thankfully, some of you aredifferent. Many thousands of you

realize that through the Tomorrow’sWorld telecast and the pages ofthis magazine, you are receivingthe very message that Jesus Christbrought to save this world fromitself. If you are to come under theblessing and protection of God,you need to be sure of that mes-sage—then act on it and obey it.

You need to prove to yourself,once and for all, that there is apersonal, living, active, all-power-

ful Creator God. You must knowthat the Bible is His inspired reve-lation of the real purpose of life,and of the spiritual laws of happi-ness and success. You must proveand know that the Bible carriesauthority—that its words arebacked up by the power of the liv-ing God who gives you everybreath of air you breathe.

You may already understandthis. But please be sure you haveproven it so completely that youwould fear to disobey what Godcommands. You must regardGod’s word as the authority overyour very life. Christ said: “Hewho rejects Me, and does notreceive My words, has that whichjudges him—the word that I havespoken will judge him in the lastday” (John 12:48). Once youhave fully proved these basicprinciples to yourself, you needto keep studying to understandand obey the true message ofAlmighty God contained in theBible.

Christ’s Message

Jesus Christ gave us the per-fectly clear revelation of God’splan and purpose. To be a

“Christian” simply means tobelieve in and obey what JesusChrist taught—to accept and sub-mit to the message He broughtfrom God the Father.

Jesus stated: “For I have notspoken on My own authority; butthe Father who sent Me gave Me acommand, what I should say andwhat I should speak” (John12:49). So Christ’s message comesdirectly from God the Father.

It is to be obeyed! For Jesusalso said, “Why do you call Me‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the thingswhich I say?” (Luke 6:46).

Jesus came to “reveal” theFather (Matthew 10:27). Above allelse, He revealed God as theSupreme Ruler of the universe. Hetaught that human beings are notto follow their own ideas and tra-ditions, but should “live… byevery word of God” (Luke 4:4).“Search the scriptures,” Jesus said.

In the “model prayer,” Christtaught His disciples to pray, “Yourkingdom come. Your will be doneon earth as it is in heaven” (Luke11:2).

Christ continually taught obe-dience to the law and will of God.When a young man asked Him theway to eternal life, Jesus answered:“If you want to enter into life, keepthe commandments” (Matthew19:17). So, to be a true Christian,you must yield yourself to obeyGod’s will, keep the TenCommandments, and surrenderyour will so completely to yourMaker that you will sincerely striveto “live by every word of God.”

The New Testament revealsthat God is now forming, withinthe people He calls holy, His right-

eous and perfect spiritual characteras a prerequisite to the preciousgift of eternal life in His kingdom.The basis of that perfect characteris absolute yieldedness to obeyGod’s perfect spiritual law—revealed by the TenCommandments and spirituallymagnified in the New Testament.

This requires completely surren-dering your personal will to God.This means a complete change in

You must prove and know that the Bible carries authority—that its wordsare backed up by the power of the living God who gives you every breathof air you breathe.

attitude, belief and way of life. TheApostle Paul was inspired to write:“And do not be conformed to thisworld, but be transformed by therenewing of your mind, that youmay prove what is that good andacceptable and perfect will of God”(Romans 12:2).

Remember, human will andstrength cannot bring about thischange. The spiritual love andpower must come as a gift fromGod.

God’s Help Is Required

Most of us have known peo-ple who made “resolutions” tolive a better life—alcoholics whodecided to “give up the bottle,”or criminals who “reformed” bysome means or other. Few ofthese changes are either perma-nent or satisfactory. Even whena change in one area of lifeseems to have become perma-nent, we can see that the per-son’s entire life, attitude, andactions are not totally yielded tothe complete and perfect will ofthe Creator.

Human beings cut off fromthe true God can “reform” them-selves to a limited extent. Butthey can never bring about theprocess we call “conversion.” Fortrue conversion is a total changewhich God brings about in one’svery mind and nature. The ApostlePaul proclaimed, “I am crucifiedwith Christ: nevertheless I live;yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:and the life which I now live inthe flesh I live by the faith of theSon of God, who loved me, and gavehimself for me” (Galatians 2:20,KJV).

That, my friends, is the“key.” Through genuine repen-tance from sin, then total surren-der to God through Jesus Christand humble faith in God’s for-

giveness of our sins throughChrist’s shed blood, we are thenpromised the “gift” of God’s HolySpirit—His very nature andcharacter implanted within us.This alone gives us the strengthto “overcome” ourselves andtruly obey God. For it is “Christin us” who is obeying God’s per-fect, spiritual law—just as Hedid in the human flesh (John15:10).

After real conversion, youbegin to study the Bible, meditateon God’s law, and pray and talkto God continually. You trulyseek God always (see myPersonal on page 2 of thisissue)! By this process, andthrough His Spirit, you come tohave the very thoughts and natureof God within you. For Christ isliving within you through theHoly Spirit!

Your whole life is completelychanged—converted—and yougrow in grace and knowledge dayby day. In spiritual attitude andcharacter, you become more likeChrist in every phase of life. A totalchange takes place within you thatcould never occur except as asupernatural act of the AlmightyGod.

However, God makes thissupernatural help available undercertain very important conditions.

You Must Believe the True Gospel

Jesus Christ and His apostlesalways preached the gospel of thekingdom or world-ruling govern-ment of God. We read: “Now afterJohn was put in prison, Jesuscame to Galilee, preaching thegospel of the kingdom of God, andsaying, ‘The time is fulfilled andthe kingdom of God is at hand,

repent, and believein the gospel’”(Mark 1:14–15).

Again, noticethat the two thingsJesus commandedwere repentance andbelief in His mes-sage.

Regarding belief,Jesus taught thatbelief in the truegospel He preached,and obedience to thelaws of God, are

inseparable. He said: “The law andthe prophets were until John.Since that time the kingdom ofGod has been preached, andeveryone is pressing into it. And it

is easier for heaven and earth topass away than for one tittle of thelaw to fail” (Luke 16:16–17).

Here we see that the law andthe prophets—the Old Testamentscriptures—were God’s only reve-lation to mankind before John theBaptist’s ministry. But throughChrist, the spiritual message ofsalvation, and the magnification ofGod’s laws in their spiritual intentand purpose, was revealed.

Notice also how Jesus con-nected obedience to God’s lawswith the New Testament gospel ofthe kingdom. Furthermore, as if tosquelch any doubt that He was

referring to God’s spiritual lawrevealed in the TenCommandments, He specified thetransgression of one of those verylaws to which He was referring:“Whoever divorces his wife andmarries another commits adultery;and whoever marries her who isdivorced from her husband com-mits adultery” (Luke 16:18).

Throughout the book of Acts,we find the inspired servants ofChrist continuing to preach thegospel of the kingdom—including,of course, obedience to the laws ofGod. We see that Philip preachedthis gospel in Acts 8:12. Paul saidhe preached it to the Gentiles atEphesus in Acts 20:25. And inActs 28:30–31, we find that Paulcontinued to preach this same mes-sage to the end of his ministry—even to the Gentiles at Rome.

This is the true gospel. It is amessage of the government ofAlmighty God over our lives now,as preparation for entrance into Hissoon-coming, world-ruling king-dom, when Jesus Christ will returnwith divine power and glory asKing of kings and Lord of lords.And, since God’s kingdom has laws,

it is a message of surrender and obe-dience to the laws and rule of God.

To prepare for that kingdom,you must first repent of your sinfulways. You must turn from sin,which is the transgression of God’sspiritual law contained in the TenCommandments (1 John 3:4), andbelieve the true gospel. Then, thereis another vital step you musttake: water baptism.

Water Baptism IsAbsolutely Necessary

After total repentance andbelief in the true gospel, water bap-

tism is the next essential step youmust take to be truly convertedand receive God’s Holy Spirit. Infact, it is a test of your real repen-tance and willingness to obey God.

Jesus Christ commanded theapostles: “Go into all the worldand preach the gospel to everycreature. He who believes and isbaptized will be saved; but hewho does not believe will be con-demned” (Mark 16: 15–16).

Jesus meant exactly what Hesaid!

In His parting commission,Jesus said: “Go therefore andmake disciples of all the nations,baptizing them in the name of theFather and of the Son and of theHoly Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

In Peter’s inspired sermon onthe day of Pentecost, he shouted:“Repent, and let every one of yoube baptized in the name of JesusChrist for the remission of sins;and you shall receive the gift ofthe Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

Notice that God only promisesthe gift of the Holy Spirit on thecondition that you repent and arebaptized. Later, Peter speaks of theHoly Spirit, which “God has given

to those who obey Him” (Acts5:32). You must do what God says.You must repent and be baptized,or you will never receive God’sHoly Spirit.

There is no other way!The Apostle Paul stated: “Now

if anyone does not have the Spiritof Christ, he is not His” (Romans8:9). In other words, unless youhave fully repented of your sins,come to God through Jesus Christas your personal Savior, and beenbaptized as He has commanded,you are not Christ’s—you do notbelong to Him. Therefore, you arenot a Christian in God’s eyes—

never have been, and never willbe—unless you are finally willingto surrender your life to God theFather, and accept Jesus Christ notonly as your Savior, but as yourHigh Priest, your coming King,your ruler, whom you will obeythroughout all eternity!

God’s Spirit is the very natureand life of God through which webecome His begotten children. HisSpirit will help us grow to maturi-ty in Christian character. Whatdoes it bring to us? “But the fruitof the Spirit is love, joy, peace,longsuffering, kindness, goodness,faithfulness, gentleness, self-control”(Galatians 5:22–23).

The Holy Spirit gives us powerfor self-mastery, self-discipline andself-control. Through it, God’s loveis poured out in our hearts(Romans 5:5). The Holy Spiritconforms us to the image of God(Romans 8:29; 2 Corinthians3:18).

You need God’s Spirit. Youneed His guidance and protection.

But it is a tremendous deci-sion to yield yourself wholly toGod—to live by His every wordand obey Him throughout all eter-

nity. Such a decision must not betaken lightly.

Baptism Involves a Vital Decision

Baptism symbolizes the deathand burial of our old, sinful self,and our rising from the waterygrave to a new, changed and con-verted life. It also pictures JesusChrist’s death and burial to pay forour sins, and His resurrection asthe firstborn from the dead.

The Apostle Paul writes: “Ordo you not know that as many ofus as were baptized into Christ

ys. You must repent and be baptized, or you will never receive God’s Holy Spirit.

Jesus were baptized into Hisdeath? Therefore we were buriedwith Him through baptism intodeath, that just as Christ wasraised from the dead by the gloryof the Father, even so we alsoshould walk in newness of life”(Romans 6:3–4).

Your decision to be baptizedhinges on your willingness tocompletely surrender your willand your life to God, throughChrist as your Savior. He paid thepenalty for your past sins. Butwhen you know the truth, youcan no longer do willfully whatyou know is sin and expect God’sforgiveness without genuinerepentance.

God rules by His law! “Keepthe commandments,” Jesus said.

Paul wrote: “Do you notknow that to whom you presentyourselves slaves to obey, you arethat one’s slaves whom you obey,whether of sin leading to death,or of obedience leading to right-eousness” (Romans 6:16).

When you must choosebetween following the ways ofyour friends and family, or obey-ing what you have found to bethe will of God—which course doyou follow? Do you take the easyway out and follow men? Do youserve and thereby worship theways of men more than the waysof God?

Do not “kid” yourself! You cannever fool God!

When you learn some newpoint of truth in the pages of thismagazine, on the Tomorrow’s Worldtelecast, or in your own personalBible study, do you put it intopractice in your life—do you obeyit—or do you reject it because itconflicts with what your church oryour particular society believesand observes?

Are you like the Phariseeswho rejected Christ because

“they loved the praise of menmore than the praise of God?”(John 12:43). God seems faraway to some people, and theirfriends seem so close and soimportant. Which do youworship? Which do you obey?

If you had to give up yourjob—your only source of income—

in order to obey some point oftruth you found in God’s word,would you do it? Would you exer-cise faith, as Jesus did, and rely onGod’s many promises to “supplyall your need” (Philippians 4:19)?Would you worship God—orMammon?

These questions apply to you!

Have you been properly baptized? Have you truly repentedof your sins, and begun living according to the will of yourSavior, with the help only He can provide? If God is callingyou, act now!

Answer: People sometimes use Mark 7:18–19to justify their desire to eat foods the Bible calls“unclean.” It is important, however, to under-stand this verse from a parable of Christ, in con-text, so we can truly appreciate what He wasteaching.

Notice the verses immediately following:“And He said, ‘What comes out of a man, thatdefiles a man, for from within, out of the heartof men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, for-nications, murders, thefts, covetousness,wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye,blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evilthings come from within and defile a man”(vv. 20–23).

Clearly, Jesus was making a point about theimportance of godly conduct. But was He alsomaking a point about diet? Notice the parallelaccount of this parable in Matthew 15. Here,Christ explained—in the context of ritual hand-washing, not dietary requirements—that everyplant “which My heavenly Father has not plant-ed will be uprooted” (Matthew 15:13). This wasa parable about godly conduct, not about whatshould be on our lunch menu!

If this were a literal instruction about diet, weshould ask ourselves, “Can Christians todayexpect to eat arsenic and other poisons, yet notbe affected?” Of course not! The parabledescribes that all foods pass through a man.However, it does not say unclean items are con-sidered “food”—Christ was not telling us to eatarsenic, nor to eat the animals Scripture plainlylabels as “unclean” in Leviticus 11.

The Apostle Peter confirmed this understand-ing in Acts 10. God gave Peter a vision of a sheetcoming down from heaven, in which were someanimals he considered “unclean.” In the vision, avoice told Peter to kill and eat the animals, butPeter refused, and God again spoke to him, say-

ing, “What God has cleansed you must not callcommon” (Acts 10:15).

Did Peter understand this as the revocationof the law of clean and unclean meats? No! Peterhimself explained the lesson of the vision, saying“God has shown me that I should not call anyman common or unclean” (v. 28). God had givenPeter the vision to show that he should preachto, and keep company with, Jews and Gentilesalike. There is no account of Peter eating uncleanfoods either before or after this vision!

An end-time prophecy from the book ofIsaiah demonstrates that when Christ returns,He will bring judgment on those who persist ineating unclean animals, including those “eatingswine’s flesh” (Isaiah 66:17). If Christ had trulyallowed human beings to eat swine’s flesh, thisprophecy would make no sense—unless weassume Christ plans to punish people for obey-ing Him!

The biblical laws of clean and unclean meatsare not merely a way God sets His people apart;they are laws that protect the physical health ofthose who obey them. As Eerdmans’ Handbookof the Bible reminds us, “These lists [of clean andunclean creatures] have a significance oftenignored. Far from being based on fad or fancy,these lists emphasize a fact not discovered untillate in the last century… that animals carry dis-eases dangerous to man” (p. 176). Those whoobey God’s law today can experience the bless-ings He intended for His creation.

n the last several years, a handful of militant atheists havelaunched a frontal assault on God and religion—especiallyon Christianity and the Bible. Their deliberate attack on reli-

gious belief is remarkable because it ignores the lessons of historyand the discoveries of modern science! Intentionally provocativebooks by Oxford zoologist Richard Dawkins and American writerSam Harris are clearly “no-holds-barred, anti-religion polemicsthat call for the eradication of all manifestations of faith”(Christian Science Monitor, January 4, 2007). Dawkins, a devoteddisciple of Darwinian evolution, has been called the “high priestof modern atheism.” In his own words, he says he is “attackingGod, all gods, anything and everything supernatural, whateverand whenever they have been or will be invented” (The GodDelusion, p. 36). Harris similarly asserts, “I have set out to demol-ish the intellectual and moral pretensions of Christianity” (Letterto a Christian Nation, p. ix).

What is the real significance of the currentattack by militant atheists on God and

religion? Where is it leading?

Amazingly, even while theseauthors are frantically waving the ban-ner of atheism and claiming that beliefin materialism and evolution are theonly rational conclusions any thinkingperson can hold, we are today witness-ing a worldwide resurgence in religiousinterest and activity! The appearance ofsuch deliberate attacks on the God ofthe Bible—at a time of increasing vio-lence on the world scene, growing con-cerns over planetary climate change andthe global resurgence of religious activi-ty—is significant in ways that few real-ize. The Bible provides vital insightsexplaining what is behind the resur-gence of religion and the skeptics’attacks on God, Christianity and theBible—and where this is leading. Beforeyou accept misleading ideas and argu-ments, you need to understand whythese issues are erupting today!

Wild Ideas

Modern atheists like to promote theidea that their anti-religious views arescientific, intellectually mature and restupon solid, irrefutable evidence. Fromsuch a premise, you would expect theirbooks to be loaded with carefullyassembled facts and unassailable infor-mation. Instead, readers are pelted witha steady stream of wild claims, unsub-stantiated statements, false information,antiquated arguments, risky assump-tions, open ridicule and erroneous con-clusions. Echoing Sigmund Freud whoviewed religion as an illusion, an infan-tile delusion and a form of mental illness, and Karl Marx who describedreligion as “the opiate of the people,”Dawkins calls belief in a supernaturalgod “delusional,” and labels religion“the most common form of supersti-tion” and a “virus of the mind”(Dawkins, pp. 5, 15, 67, 186). Parentswho teach their children about God,Dawkins says, are guilty of brainwash-ing and child abuse! Dawkins asserts, asdo other aggressive atheists, “Thosewho believe in God are therefore dis-

honest, deluded, or stupid”because they follow an “idioticmedieval superstition.”

Dawkins’ book The GodDelusion has been hailed as“smart… brave… refreshing…demolishes religious leaders’attempts to prove the existence ofGod.” However, when examinedclosely and critically, the ammuni-tion Dawkins uses against religionand belief in God turns out to belittle more than “rubber bullets”fired by ivory-tower academicswho have a poor grasp of the sub-ject they are attacking. Perhapsthe most audacious exercise in badtaste employed by this currentatheist offensive is the “blasphemychallenge” directed at young peo-ple. An Internet group invitesyoung people “to create videos inwhich they renounce belief in the‘sky God of Christianity’ andupload it on the site” as “a way forpeople to show their non-beliefand encouraging others to comeout” (Christian Science Monitor,January 4, 2007).

“TheologicallyChallenged” Authors

Many critics have challengedthe arguments and informationpresented by aggressively atheisticwriters. Alister McGrath isProfessor of Historical Theology atOxford University and a world-renowned theologian who alsoholds a Ph.D. in molecular bio-physics. He writes: “To put itbluntly, Dawkins’ engagementwith theology is superficial andinaccurate, often amounting to lit-tle more than cheap point scoring”(Dawkins’ God, p. 83). McGrathcites Dawkins’ definition of faithas “blind trust, in the absence ofevidence” as totally ludicrous inthat it is merely “Dawkins’ owndefinition, constructed with his

own agenda in mind” (ibid., p.85). Harris promotes similar ideasabout the “stupidity” of religiousfaith. McGrath then provides adefinition of faith accepted by the-ologians: “the conviction of themind based on adequate evidence”(ibid., p. 86). This resembles thebiblical definition of faith as “thesubstance of things hoped for, theevidence of things not seen”(Hebrews 11:1). Real faith is notblind faith—it is belief based onsubstantial evidence! McGrath cri-tiques Dawkins as one “who,knowing nothing about Christiantheology, rushes headlong into thefield… There is a total failure onDawkins’ part to even begin tounderstand what Christian theolo-gy means by its language”(Dawkins’ God, p. 99). This samecriticism can apply to others whohave launched the modern attackon God, religion and the Bible—they simply do not understand thesubject they are trying to attack!

Dawkins frequently resorts toridicule in his attempts to provethere is no God. He claims theexistence of God is “no moreprobable than the tooth fairy” or a“Flying Spaghetti Monster”(Dawkins, pp. 52–53). In hisintemperate and irreverent man-ner, Dawkins asserts, “The God ofthe Old Testament is arguably themost unpleasant character in allfiction: jealous and proud of it; apetty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirstyethnic cleanser… homophobic,racist… malevolent bully… psy-chotic delinquent… the monsterof the Bible” (ibid., pp. 31, 38,45). This malicious diatribe, how-ever, simply does not disprove theexistence of God. In fact, it totallyoverlooks how the God of theBible challenges people to provethat He exists (see Malachi3:8–10). While Dawkins claims

many traditional “proofs” of Godare weak, his own arguments areoften lacking in substance.Regrettably, many in our dayaccept or reject the idea of Godwithout ever requiring or examin-ing any evidence.

The atheistic attack on theBible reveals a failure to understandScripture and an ignorance of his-torical evidence. Harris labels as“false” and an “absurdity” the ideathat the Bible is divinely inspired byGod (Letter to a Christian Nation,pp. 5–8). He completely overlooksthe evidence that the Bible is atotally unique text. Harris citesscriptural examples out of contextand then claims the teachings ofthe Bible are “muddled and contra-dictory” (ibid., p. 11). He states that“the gospels contradict one anoth-er” (ibid., p. 58), yet he fails tomention that the gospels are com-plementary accounts of events writ-ten by different authors—in whichwe would expect some difference indetails. He claims New Testamentwriters made the events of Jesus’ lifeconform to Old Testament prophe-cies (ibid., p. 57), yet he fails toexplain why thousands of Jews rec-ognized Jesus as fulfilling prophe-cies—including being visibly resur-rected from the dead—which hadbeen in Scripture for hundreds ofyears (Acts 2:22–41).

Harris dismisses the idea ofinspired prophecy because theBible did not predict such innova-tions as electricity and computers(Letter to a Christian Nation, pp.60–61), yet he fails to mentionhow the Bible describes propheticpromises that revealed the future ofAbraham’s descendants long beforethey arrived on the scene (for moreon this vital topic, request our freebooklet, The United States andGreat Britain in Prophecy). Harrisalso neglects to mention that thehealth laws recorded by Moses

were unique and far in advance oftheir time. Showing his ignoranceof comparative religion, Harrislumps the Bible together with otherreligious books which “pretend todivine authorship” (Letter to aChristian Nation, p. 79), yet he failsto acknowledge how the Bible dif-fers from other religious books.Harris simply does not know muchabout the subject he sets out todemolish!

Outspoken and combative,Dawkins makes similar outrageousand ill-founded claims contrary toexisting evidence. He asserts thatthe gospels are “ancient fiction,”no more credible than legends ofKing Arthur and his Knights ofthe Round Table. He opines thatthe apostles almost certainly nevermet Jesus, that Jesus probablynever lived and that David proba-bly never existed (Dawkins, pp.93–97). However, Dawkins fails tomention Peter’s claim that he andthe other apostles were “eyewit-nesses” to the events they record-ed about Jesus’ life (2 Peter 1:16),or that historians in ancient Romereferred to Jesus (see Tacitus, TheAnnals, xv:44; Suetonius, Life ofClaudius, xxv.4; Josephus,Antiquities of the Jews, XVIII.iii.3).Dawkins appears to be unaware ofthe discovery of a ninth centuryBC inscription about the “house ofDavid” (Is the Bible True?, Sheler,p. 60). Dawkins asserts that “thegospels are not reliable accountsof what happened in the history ofthe real world” and that “all werewritten long after the death ofJesus” such that “huge uncertain-ty” surrounds the New Testamenttexts (Dawkins, pp. 92–95).

Dawkins, however, chooses toquote only liberal theologians whoharbor doubts about the Bible. Hefails to notice that people andplaces mentioned in Scripturehave been dramatically confirmed

by history and archaeology, thatthe books of the New Testamentwere written during the lifetimesof the apostles (Sheler, p. 33;Baker Encyclopedia of ChristianApologetics, Geisler, p. 520), andthat manuscript evidence confirmsthat “in substance of the text theBible is certain… This can be saidof no other ancient book in theworld” (Evidence that Demands aVerdict, McDowell, pp. 44–45).

Frauds and Missing Evidence

Aggressive atheists are oftenquick to attack religious beliefslike the idea of Purgatory, and theassumption that the earth is only6,000 years old. Like CharlesDarwin, today’s atheists also recoilat the idea of a god who woulddevise the “damnable doctrine” ofpeople burning forever in the firesof Hell (Dawkins’ God, pp. 74–75).However, those “religious” ideasare not actually found in theBible! While they correctly pointout some weak spots in man-madereligious doctrines, atheists fail toacknowledge serious flaws in theirown “sacred” teaching—the theo-ry of Darwinian evolution.

And there are many suchflaws. Jonathan Wells, who holdsa Ph.D. in religious studies fromYale University and a Ph.D. inmolecular biology from theUniversity of California atBerkeley, has written an informa-tive book explaining how themajor “proofs” put forward forevolution “in one way or another,misrepresent the truth.” Wellspoints out that much of the “over-whelming evidence” for Darwin’stheory of evolution turns out to be“false or misleading” (Icons ofEvolution, pp. 7–8). He shows howsupposed “origin of life” experi-ments were flawed and did not

create anything resembling life. Henotes that, contrary to evolution-ary theory which asserts all lifedeveloped from simple to complexorganisms, the actual fossils in theoldest Cambrian rocks show com-plex forms of life appearing sud-denly, fully formed and withoutevolutionary ancestors—the so-called “Cambrian explosion” thateven Darwin recognized was aproblem for his theory (ibid., pp.35–39).

Wells points out how Darwin’sidea of a branching “tree of life,”depicting how all life developedfrom a single ancestor, is nowlargely discredited. He shows howthe variation in beak structure ofDarwin’s finches in the GalapagosIslands, and the coloration of pep-pered moths in England, are mere-ly examples of variation within aspecies and do not prove evolu-tion can produce new species. Hereveals that paleontologists nolonger regard Archaeopteryx—oncecalled “the almost perfect linkbetween reptiles and birds”—to bean ancestor of modern birds (ibid.,pp. 112–114). Wells relates howanother supposed “missing link”between reptiles and birds—Archaeoraptor, a fossil smuggledout of China—turned out to be ahoax, and that another possible“link” named Bambiraptor hasbeen depicted with hair and feath-ers, “but nothing remotely resem-bling feathers was found with thefossil. The hair-like projectionsand the feathers are imaginary”(ibid., pp. 126–129). He quotes anornithologist who predicts thedinosaur-to-bird theory will even-tually be “the greatest embarrass-ment to paleontology of the 20thcentury” (ibid., p. 130).

Wells also points out thatwidely published drawings madeby embryologist Ernst Haeckel inthe 1890s—which Darwin took to

be convincing evidence for histheory of evolution—were “doc-tored” by Haeckel to show similar-ities that do not exist, and havebeen exposed as “one of the mostfamous fakes in biology” (ibid.,pp. 90–92). Wells concludes thatthe “icons” that supposedly pro-vide the strongest evidence forevolution actually “misrepresentthe evidence”—and that somehave actually turned out to befraudulent (ibid., p. 229).

Even so, atheists like Dawkinshave latched onto Darwinian evo-lution because it is the only waythey can explain why we are herewithout invoking any reference toGod. True believers in Darwinismsimply refuse to accept any otherexplanation for why the world isthe way it is—regardless of theevidence, or lack of evidence. Thisis why Darwinism has been called“the greatest engine of atheismdevised by man.” Yet atheism, andDarwinian evolution upon whichit rests, both reveal serious short-comings to those who examine theevidence carefully.

Crisis of Meaning and Purpose

Theological historian McGrathwrites that one of Darwinism’smajor consequences is that “evo-lutionary theory leads to a godless,purposeless world” (The Twilightof Atheism, p. 108). In Dawkins’own words, “There is no need tobelieve in God after Darwin” andin a Darwinian world “there is…no design, no purpose, no evil andno good, nothing but blind pitilessindifference” (Dawkins’ God, pp.50–51). Darwinism postulates thathuman beings are simply animals,accidents of the evolutionaryprocess with no higher purposethan natural selection—survival ofthe fittest. McGrath observes, “If

there is no God… then there areno absolute values and truths…no sins… no judgment on sins”and therefore no limits on humanbehavior and no accountability(ibid., pp. 151, 153). By claimingthat human existence has nomeaning or purpose and denyingabsolute values, atheists promotethe idea of liberation from restric-tive morality systems that interferewith sexual freedoms and givepeople license to decide for them-selves what is good (ibid., p. 152).However, the sobering lesson ofthe last two hundred years of his-tory is that “to remove God is toeliminate the final restraint onhuman brutality” (ibid., p. 149).

Contrary to the expectationsof secular thinkers, the last half ofthe 20th century has witnessedthe “twilight” of the rule of athe-ism. The godless ideas of Darwin,Marx and Freud—which Dawkins,Harris and other atheists are pro-moting—came under discreditingfire. Not only did “the great athe-istic messianic ideology” of com-munism established by theRussian revolution collapse, butreligion in the Soviet Union andEastern Europe refused to die (TheRevenge of God, Kepler, p. 191).Today, we are seeing the rival of“re-Christianizing” movementssprouting from the ruins of com-munism—which has been a shockto secular intellectuals. Increasing

numbers of people have becomedisenchanted with the bleak, pur-poseless, random, atheistically sec-ular world of the 20th century,and are once again turning to reli-gion to regain a sense of meaning,ethics and order (ibid., p. 47). Asmore than one scholar has noted,“People need to find meaning andpurpose in life” (New York Times,November 21, 2006).

Prophetic Significance

Many who study the Bible areaware that prophecies about theend of the age describe a time ofincreasing concerns about war,violence, natural disasters andglobal environmental crises—which certainly fit our worldtoday (Matthew 24). However,end-time prophecies also foresawthe appearance of blasphemousattacks on God and the Bible, fore-telling that in the last days, “per-ilous times will come: for men willbe lovers of themselves… boast-ers, proud, blasphemers… despis-ers of good… headstrong, haughty,lovers of pleasure rather thanlovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:1–4).We can recognize this biblicaldescription in Dawkins’ referencesto God as a “tooth fairy… psy-chotic delinquent” and “the mon-ster” of the Bible. Harris claims

as the Son of God to be cru-cified for the sins of the world, and that He was buried,rose from the dead and ascended to heaven. The Biblepresents Jesus’ miracles and His resurrection as proof ofHis divinity. Scripture shows that these events were wit-nessed by many and were powerful reasons for the spreadof the Christian religion.

However, some modern writers and scholars aresuggesting that these fundamental teachings ofChristianity are only myths and fables. Skeptics havepostulated that Jesus was not divine, that He marriedand had a child—and that He did not rise from thedead, but was secretly buried in a family tomb inJerusalem with his wife and son. While some speculatethat this new “understanding” about Jesus Christ“could be among the most significant in history”(Charlotte Observer, March 4, 2007), what we are wit-nessing today is simply more prophecy coming alive!

Imagining the Past

Where are these “new” ideas coming from? Whatare their sources? A closer look is revealing. Dr. JamesTabor, author of The Jesus Dynasty, asserts that hisrecently published book “presents the story of Jesus inan entirely new light. It is history, not fiction” (p. 4).Yet he states: “History is not merely an assemblage offacts. It also involves an attempt to retrieve and imaginethe past” (p. 305). Critics note that Tabor’s book—andthe television documentary The Lost Tomb of Jesus towhich he contributed—contain “a lot of speculation.”In the concluding pages of his book, Tabor writes:“There is much we can never know… With regard tosome areas we are left to guess and speculate… [what]might have taken place…” (p. 308). That is not histo-

ry; it is conjecture that could well be fiction. Similarly,in The Jesus Papers, Michael Baigent provides no solidevidence—and certainly no proof—for his assertionthat Jesus did not die in the crucifixion.

Modern scholars often adopt ideas that run contraryto the biblical record because they do not believe theBible contains an accurate record of history, so they takethe scriptural accounts apart, then reassemble them in amanner they think is more correct. Tabor and other mod-ern scholars base their ideas about the Gospels on the so-called “Q” document” or Gospel of Q—a hypotheticalcollection of Jesus’ sayings envisioned by a 19th centuryGerman scholar. As one theological encyclopedia notes:“Since Q allegedly contains sayings, not works or mira-cles of Jesus, it is used as a basis for denying the resurrec-tion” and also the deity of Christ (Baker Encyclopedia ofChristian Apologetics, pp. 618–621). However, no one hasever seen this theoretical Q document, and one formerproponent of Q now states, “This is the stuff of fairytales” (ibid.). The idea of a Q document “is based on areconstructionist view of history that rejects NewTestament history in Acts. If the Q hypothesis is cor-rect… the book of Acts must be altogether false. Yet nobook in the New Testament has more authentication ofits historical accuracy than Acts” (ibid.). By postulating anever-seen Q document as the basis for the Gospels,modern scholars can take liberties in reconstructingJesus’ life as they imagine it to be—so it is no wonder thatthese “new” perspectives on the life of Jesus differ so dra-matically from the actual events recorded in the Bible.

Some scholars point to apocryphal writings—neveraccepted by the Church—for evidence that Jesus wasmarried and had children. One such suggestion thatJesus had a romantic relationship comes from theGnostic Gospel of Philip—a source considered spuriousand heretical by early Church leaders—yet some mod-ern scholars view it, and other similar writings, as validhistory. Dan Brown, author of the Da Vinci Code, drawson these sources as well as other pagan and occultworks—yet even scholars who rely on some of the sameworks recognize Dan Brown’s novel as pure fiction!

The Biblical Record

A study of the Gospels quickly reveals how the Bible differs from the speculative pronouncementsof modern liberal scholars. The Bible states plainly

that a “virginshall conceiveand bear a Son,a n d s h a l l c a l lH i s n a m eI m m a n u e l ” —meaning “God withus” (Isaiah 7:14).J e s u s ’ e n e m i e smocked Him as noth a v i n g a p h y s i c a lf a ther ( John 8 :41) .Modern scholars, operat-ing on the assumptionthat miraculous eventscannot occur, reject thebiblical account of Jesus’supernatural concep-tion and virgin birth.T h e B i b l e c l e a r l ystates that Jesus’ bodywas not present whenH i s d i s c i p l e sentered the tombon the third day, and thatcloths that wrapped the body were leftbehind (Mark 16:6; Luke 24:3–7; John 20:1–7).Unable to accept a miraculous explanation, some mod-ern scholars suggest Jesus’ body was taken from thetomb and secretly buried elsewhere, though the Bibleexplains Roman soldiers were paid to circulate that verylie in order to deny the fact of the resurrection (Matthew28:11–15).

Scripture explains that Jesus appeared alive after theresurrection on many occasions—even to a group of 500onlookers (John 20:19–20, 26; 21:1–7; 1 Corinthians15:6–8). Jesus’ resurrection on the third day was the pri-mary sign that He was the promised Messiah (Luke 9:22;18:31–33; 24:46). Modern liberal scholars, however,with their anti-supernatural bias, deny that a dead bodycan come alive and walk out of a grave, so they operateon the assumption that Jesus’ body must be buried some-where. Think about it: if Jesus’ body were buried in afamily tomb near the site of His crucifixion, as some crit-ics now assert, surely the religious and secular authori-ties would have been able to find that body and show itto the public to squash the new Christian movement!

The Bible explains that Jesus preached about acoming kingdom of God (Mark 1:14–15), which Hesaid “is not of this world” (John 18:36). Christ came to

die for the sins of the world, as His dis-ciples recognized (1 John 2:2). Yetsome revisionist scholars speculatethat the Gospels are mistaken, andthat Jesus had a wife and childrenwith whom He intended to start adynastic line. These scholars sayHe believed He would not die bycrucifixion, but that “God wouldintervene to save him from hisenemies at the final moment”

(The Jesus Dynasty, p. 310). This makes forentertaining speculation, but totally

contradicts what the Bibleclearly reveals—andundermines the very

message of the Gospels.

End-Time ScoffersProphesied

The increasing numberof scholars and writers mak-

ing headlines by openly challenging fundamental

teachings of the Bible shouldcome as no surprise to students

of Scripture. Long ago, Godforetold that “scoffers will come

in the last days, walking according to their own lusts” (2Peter 3:1–6). In The Expositor’s Bible Commentary thisphrase refers to “false teachers… who deny biblicaltruths” (volume 12, p. 284). The Bible states that “in thelast days” men “having a form of godliness but denyingits power” will actually deny that “all Scripture is givenby the inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:1–17). illions of families will observe Father’s Day thisyear on June 17. The United States is one ofseveral dozen countries that observe this much-

beloved holiday on the third Sunday of June each year.Other countries set different dates for Father’s Day; Indiaobserves it on the first Sunday of June (June 3 this year),and several European countries (including Italy, Portugaland Spain) observe it on March 19. In Australia and NewZealand, Father’s Day falls on the first Sunday ofSeptember (September 2 this year).

As we approach this day when we honor fathers, weshould ask: What is the state of “fatherhood”? Does ithave real significance in society today?

True fatherhood is not just the biological capacity tofather children. In-vitro fertilization can accomplish thatwith no father present. True fatherhood involves a fatherbeing in the home, training and loving his children in the con-text of a committed marriage relationship. By that definition,fatherhood in the United States is at an all-time low. Nearly40 percent of U.S. births now occur out of wedlock,according to December 2006 statistics from the Centers forDisease Control. In some European countries the figure is

even higher—41 percent in France, roughly 50percent in Norway, and 62 percent in Iceland(Daily Policy Digest, March 27, 2002).

Compounding the problem is that the U.S.has the second-highest divorce rate in the world.Recently, married couples for the first timebecame a minority, accounting for only 49.7 per-cent of households with children.

Choosing Fatherlessness

Increasingly, older single mothers are choosingto become pregnant without a husband. One 31-year old single mother noted that when shebecame pregnant “it didn’t matter if I had a man,because I knew I could do it alone.” A singlemother said that her 9-year old daughter “doescry sometimes about not having her dad around,but we talk about it… I do feel guilt sometimes,but we don’t let it overwhelm us” (MontereyHerald, December 25, 2006).

What about the effect on children? KayHymowitz, a senior fellow at the ManhattanInstitute, said, “Children raised by single momshave a greater risk of poverty, emotional prob-lems, school failure… Cohabitating parents don’tshow quite the same strength; neither do steppar-ents. Marriage carries with it a whole set of mes-sages about how to live, which are consistent withmiddle-class life in this country” (ibid.).

Out-of-wedlock pregnancy and divorce are sowidespread, according to author DavidBlankenhorn, that “before they reach the age ofeighteen, more than half of our nation’s childrenare likely to spend at least a significant portion oftheir childhoods living apart from their fathers”(Fatherless America, p. 1). In studying divorce,researchers Paul Amato and Alan Booth concludedthat “at most a third of divorces are so distressedthat the children are likely to benefit. The remain-der, about 70 percent, involve low-conflict mar-riages that apparently harm children much lessthan the realities of divorce (“Two parents, evenunhappy, are better,” Today, January 7, 1998).

In Bringing Up Boys, psychologist JamesDobson points out that in spite of such evidence,some believe not only that fathers are unnecessary,but that the institution of fatherhood is harmful tofamilies (p. 65). He cites Carl Auerbach and LouiseSilverstein, authors of Deconstructing the EssentialFather, as well as Karla Mantilla, a radical feministauthor, who said, “I am highly suspicious of the…

necessity of kids to have a malerole model… The propaganda thatchildren, especially boys, needfathers I think, has contributedincalculably to the misery of chil-dren all over the world” (ibid.).

Roots of Paternal Conflict

Some mistakenly believe thatJesus Christ came to earth tocounterbalance a harsh “Father-figure” God. They fail to see howJesus showed only deep respect,honor and love for His Father. Hesaid, “Most assuredly, I say to you,the Son can do nothing ofHimself, but what He sees theFather do… For the Father lovesthe Son… I do not seek My ownwill but the will of the Father whosent Me” (John 5:19–20, 30). InJohn 14:28, Jesus said His Fatherwas greater than He, in positionand authority. He said He came toearth to reveal and declare theFather (John 1:18).

Christ taught that we are topray to, worship, and love “ourFather in heaven” (Matthew 6:9).He said, “O righteous Father! Theworld has not known You, but Ihave known You, and these [Hisdisciples] have known that Yousent Me. And I have declared tothem Your name, and will declareit, that the love with which Youloved Me may be in them.” (John17:25–26). Jesus, as our personalSavior and Elder Brother, is teach-ing us to love His—and our—heavenly Father as well!

Yet many still recoil fromfatherhood, in the family or in reli-gion. “Consider this dilemma ofthe father’s power. It is a funda-mental human problem, shapingpsyches and cultures. The anthro-pologist Weston La Barre, forexample, probing for the originsof religion in human societies,finally views the ‘anguish’ pro-

duced by paternal authority as ‘theroot of religion’ and ‘the secret ofwho we are…’ In short, antagonismtoward paternal power seems to gowith the territory of fatherhood”(Blankenhorn, p. 93).

Some years ago, a greeting-cardcompany started a special Mother’sDay program for federal prisoninmates. Prisoners received a freecard, postage paid, to send to theirmothers for Mother’s Day. Theresponse was overwhelming! Thelines were so long, representativeshad to return to the factory to getmore cards. The program was sosuccessful, the company decided tocome back on Fathers’ Day. Whathappened on Father’s Day? Nothing.There were no lines at all. Not a sin-gle inmate wanted to send a card tohis father. Truly, a loving relation-ship with a father has a profoundeffect on one’s life. And the lack ofan engaged, active father is a strongdetermining factor in behavior goneawry (Dobson, p. 60).

Where did antagonism againstfatherhood originate? In the distantpast, before mankind was created,the archangel Lucifer rebelledagainst God, our Father in heaven.We read: “How you are fallen fromheaven, O Lucifer, son of the morn-ing!... For you have said in yourheart… I will ascend above theheights of the clouds, I will be likethe Most High” (Isaiah 14:12–14).Lucifer became Satan, and as Satanhe transmitted his attitude of rebel-lion to Adam and Eve in theGarden of Eden (Genesis 3:5). Thatsame spirit of rebellion againstauthority—even the authority ofour heavenly Father—has beenpassed on to all mankind, and theresult is sin (Romans 3:23).

Human nature naturally resistsauthority—whether the father of afamily, or the Father-figure God(Romans 8:7). “More than themother-child bond, the father-child

bond is frequently charged withdistance, tension, and even hostili-ty, all stemming, at least in part,from the typically distinctive con-tent of paternal authority… thefather’s power, as a general anthro-pological proposition, is more con-flictual than the mother’s: morerule-oriented, more emotionallydistant, more aggressive… Muchof this tension is rooted in the factthat the child both craves andresents authority. So does a culture”(Blankenhorn, p. 93).

Is fatherhood a valid excusefor abusive behavior? Of coursenot! Violence against wives andchildren is a horrible and tragiccrime. Women and children needto take steps to protect themselvesagainst criminal behavior when itoccurs. However, it is wrong tobelieve, as some do, that thefatherhood role itself increases vio-lence against women. In fact, evi-dence from the National CrimeVictimization Survey showed thatboyfriends and ex-husbands—unmarried men—are six timesmore likely than husbands tocommit violence against women(ibid., p. 35). Clearly, when menare married, the risk of abuse isdramatically decreased. God man-dates that the father is to be thehead of the home (Ephesians5:23), but his role of leadershipmust be exercised in love andkindness (v. 25).

The Bible reveals four distinctroles that fathers are meant to ful-fill. We can also see these rolesfulfilled by our spiritual Father inheaven. What are these roles?

Fathers Provide

When God thrust Adam andEve out of the garden, Adam’s rolewas to provide for the sustenanceof the family (Genesis 3:17–19).The Apostle Paul taught that

wives’ and mothers’ primaryresponsibility was to be managersof the home (Titus 2:5; 1 Timothy5:14). These passages shock andembarrass some people today, butthey outline basic biblical roles.

Indeed, when men shirk theirresponsibility to provide, they causeuntold suffering. Author AubreyAndelin describes the reaction of awoman whose husband quit a high-er-paying job for another whichmade him happier, but at which heonly worked four hours a day. “[Myhusband] does not seem to carewhether or not he provides for us…we are desperate for money. Wehave been living with his parentsfor the past seven months and itdoesn’t even look hopeful that wemight possibly have our own placeto live. I am losing all respect formy husband and without respectthere is not real love” (Man of Steeland Velvet, p. 78). Yes, a man’sdesire and earnest attempt to pro-vide for family members is vital ifhe is to retain their respect.

Sometimes, of course, a manmay be unable to provide for hisfamily. Sometimes a wife may

need to step into the “primarybreadwinner” role. But the generalbiblical principle is that a husbandshould provide for his own (1 Timothy 5:8).

Does God, as our Father,provide for His children? Ofcourse! He sends the sunshineand the rain to all (Matthew5:45). God takes special care toput bread on the table of thosewho honor and love Him, so that“in the days of famine they shallbe satisfied” (Psalm 37:19).David wrote, “I have beenyoung, and now am old; yet Ihave not seen the righteous for-saken, nor his descendants [chil-dren] begging bread” (Psalm37:25). Jesus taught His disciplesto ask their Father in heaven to“give us this day our dailybread” (Matthew 6:11), and thatit is God’s pleasure to “give goodthings to those who ask Him”(Matthew 7:11). Let us look toour spiritual Father for our sus-tenance and needs. And let usuphold the biblical role of physi-cal fathers to do the same infamilies here on earth.

Fathers Protect

God designed fathers to pro-tect their wives and children. Menare generally bigger and strongerthan women—ideally suited forthe role of protector and provider.Their larger frames and strongermuscles were designed to helpcare for—not abuse and terror-ize—a wife and children.

Not that long ago, societytook for granted that a father’s rolewas to protect his daughters fromboys’ unhealthy advances. MegMeeker describes her father thisway: “My dad protected me fierce-ly, to the point where I was almosttoo embarrassed to date anyone…But he protected me, not frompredatory boys or monsters, butfrom myself. I was young and tootrusting of people and he knewthat long before I did” (StrongFathers, Strong Daughters, p. 3).

Today, we see rampant gangviolence in communities wherefathers are largely absent from theirchildren’s lives. “Neighborhoodswithout fathers are neighborhoodswithout men able and willing to

he had met, not one of themgenuinely loved his dad. Ninety-five percent of those on deathrow hated their fathers.

confront errant youth, chasethreatening gangs, and reproachdelinquent fathers… the absenceof fathers… deprives the commu-nity of those little platoons thatinformally but often effectivelycontrol boys on the street”(Blankenhorn, p. 31).

Does our Father in heaventake care of us? The Bible is full ofexamples of the protection ourFather affords us—especially inthe Psalms. Even salvation itself—rescuing us from the final destruc-tion of death—is God protectingHis children (1 Corinthians15:57). God loves us, even to thepoint of giving up His Son for ourlives (John 3:16).

If you value God’s protectionin your life, be appreciative ofHim. And be thankful for thesimilar role He established forfathers on earth.

Fathers Teach

God has also given fathers aunique role in the education oftheir children. The word “disci-pline” did not originally meanpunishment; it meant teaching.Just a few hundred years ago, incolonial America, fathers “borethe ultimate responsibility for thecare and well-being of their chil-dren… fathers assumed primaryresponsibility for what was seenas the most essential parentaltask: the religious and moral edu-cation of the young.” As theindustrial revolution removedmen from the household econo-my, women became the primaryinfluence in the home. This shifthas been one of the “defining fea-tures of American domestic lifesince the 1840s” (Blankenhorn,p. 237).

In general, mothers are betterequipped to pay special attentionto their children’s immediate phys-

ical and emotional needs. Fathers,on the other hand, are typicallymore concerned about charactergrowth than fulfilling immediateemotional needs. Scripturereminds us: “Chasten thy sonwhile there is hope, and let not thysoul spare for his crying”(Proverbs 19:18, KJV). Both moth-ers and fathers are necessary forbringing up healthy children,because they complement and bal-ance one another. Author TimRussert recalled, “Although Dad’sdisciplinary tactics were rarelyappreciated by his kids at the time,I could have filled this whole bookwith grateful testimonies fromsons and daughters who were atthe receiving end years ago”(Wisdom of our Fathers, p. 223).

Discipline, however, does notmean lashing out in anger. Paulwrote, “Do not provoke your children, lest they become discour-aged” (Colossians 3:21). Along with teaching, measured, consistent and firm discipline—“exhorting” and “charging”—iswhat it takes for fathers to “bring[children] up in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians6:4; 1 Thessalonians 2:11).

God our Father has establisheda program of character develop-ment for us. Sometimes thatincludes trials and tests (Jeremiah17:10), for our eventual good. Weare told, “‘My son, do not despisethe chastening of the Lord, nor bediscouraged when you are rebukedby Him; For whom the Lord lovesHe chastens… Furthermore, wehave had human fathers who cor-rected us, and we paid themrespect… For they indeed for a fewdays chastened us as seemed best tothem, but He for our profit, that wemay be partakers of His holiness”(Hebrews 12:5–7, 9–10). If we areto be in His Kingdom, we need togrow and change. God our Father

is committed to helping us do that,so we can enjoy “the peaceable fruitof righteousness to those who havebeen trained by it” (v. 11).

Fatherhood is not a curse. It isa necessary complement to moth-erhood for the training of the nextgeneration. If you had a fatherwho trained you, give thanks forthe guidance he passed on to you,however imperfectly. And let us allbe grateful that God, as ourFather, is willing to train us forlife with Him in His Kingdom.

Fathers Nurture

Though fathers may not havethe same deep “emotional well”that mothers have, their comfortand encouragement is also essen-tial for their children’s growth.While gentleness, tenderness andaffection may not come as natural-ly to some men, those qualitiesmust be present in fathers whohope to nurture balanced, healthychildren. “Gentleness is to thesteel qualities what mercy is tojustice. When justice is meted outalone, it is cold, undeviating, andunsympathetic…. Although justiceis in reality given for the benefit ofthe individual, without mercy itappears intent on the suffering oreven the destruction of the per-son…” (Andelin, p. 213).

A father who is not attentiveto his children’s emotional needswill seem cold and distant. Whenwarmth, communication, andencouragement are absent in afather, family roles can devolveinto “master-slave” relationships.Sadly, as authors Ernest Havemannand Marlene Lehtinen note, this ishow many today see traditionalmarriage roles (Marriage andFamilies, p. 206). But God neverintended fathers to be cold andaloof. Notice how He describesHimself as our Father: “As one

whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you…” (Isaiah66:13). Paul explained that in his dealings with the church, he tried to be like a caring, compas-sionate father who comforts (1 Thessalonians 2:11).

As society becomes more deca-dent and self-obsessed, childrenneed more than ever the strengthand love of devoted fathers whowill stand by them, support themand be a hero for them. British psy-chiatrist Dr. Joshua Bierer onceobserved “[America is] still thefatherless society. The husbands arenot husbands. All the women arecrying out for a strong man and he’sjust not there” (Andelin, p. xi).Children need fathers—and womenneed husbands—who will not bendto peer pressure of “what other par-ents do.” Children need committedfathers who look out for theirfuture character—not just bowingto their every whim and wish.

In a speech for the NationalFather’s Day Committee, GeneralDouglas MacArthur said: “By profes-sion, I am a soldier… But I amprouder, infinitely prouder, to be afather… It is my hope that my son,when I am gone, will remember menot from the battle, but in the home”(Dobson, pp. 68–69). True father-hood is a noble and honorable rolefor a man, and is worth striving for.

Will “good family men” becomeextinct? Not as long as there aremen—and women—who appreciatefathers’ importance in society, todayand in the future. God has given usthe father’s role as a mirror-image ofHis protection, providence, disci-pline, and love for all humanity. AsFather’s Day approaches, we shouldthank God—our Father—for thegift of fatherhood.

• Girls who lived with their mothers and fathershave significantly fewer growth and develop-mental delays, and fewer learning disorders,emotional disabilities and behavior problems.

• Girls who live apart from theirfathers have significantly less abilityto control impulses and delay gratifi-cation, and have a weaker sense ofright and wrong.

Somepoints not addressed in your article: Burning fossilfuel releases carbon monoxide, not carbon diox-ide. Volcanic eruptions release great amounts ofcarbon dioxide. Water vapor contributes to the“greenhouse effect” about three times as much ascarbon dioxide. Solar activity also seems to play arole, as suggested by recent findings of “globalwarming” on Mars. Ice core data shows carbondioxide levels are the result of, not the cause of,temperature change. I wish your article had beenmore thorough in analyzing the different aspects ofthis complex issue. Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truthis not a credible source, as Gore is a self-interestedpartisan, not a scientist. Legitimate scientists still dis-agree about the causes of recent climate change.

erusalem is a focal point of conflict in theMiddle East. Across the Arab world, millionsoppose Israel’s hold on this historic city.Around the globe, millions of Muslims hope

the day will come when Jerusalem is no longer underIsrael’s control.

Will their hope be fulfilled? Last March, IranianPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with leaders ofthe Palestinian militant group Hamas, and expressedhis support of its efforts to wrest control of Jerusalemfrom Israel. “The time of fulfillment of the godlypromise is near. The Zionist regime [Israel] is goingthrough its worst phase, and is on the verge of elimi-nation. The Palestinians should stay vigilant and sup-port their elected government to prepare grounds forliberation of holy Quds [Jerusalem] and deliverancefrom wicked Zionist fetters,” said Ahmadinejad. Heurged Hamas to persist in its efforts “for continuingresistance and throwing out the Zionist tyrants fromthe holy soil of Palestine. Resistance should continueuntil not even an inch of Palestinian soil” is underIsraeli control, Ahmadinejad said.

Other less strident voices have also called forIsrael to give up at least some of its control ofJerusalem. In 1980, when Israel declared Jerusalem tobe Israel’s “united and eternal capital,” the Vaticanstrongly objected to that declaration. By 1984, PopeJohn Paul II was calling for Jerusalem to have a “spe-cial internationally guaranteed status.” More recently,Pope Benedict XVI has angered many Israelis byrefusing to condemn all Palestinian attacks againstIsrael, and by noting that Israeli response to thoseattacks has sometimes violated international law. Inhis Ash Wednesday message to Jerusalem’s RomanCatholics last February, Latin patriarch Michel Sabbahcriticized Israeli policy, calling for an end to “the evilof occupation, with all of its oppression,” anddenounced “the Israeli soldiers who, at any time,enter our Palestinian cities, kill people, take prison-ers, uproot trees, and destroy houses.”

To understand the future of Jerusalem, we need tounderstand its past. After Rome fell, Jerusalem cameunder the control of the Byzantine Empire untilMuslim armies conquered the city in 638. In 1099, the

First Crusade saw control ofJerusalem pass to Europeaninvaders, who held it until 1187when it was taken by the Muslimgeneral Saladin, whose successoral-Khamil gave the city to EmperorFrederick II of the Holy RomanEmpire in 1228. In 1244 theAyyubids of Egypt took Jerusalem,and it remained under Egyptianrule until 1516, when armies of theOttoman Empire seized the city.

Four centuries later, duringWorld War I in 1917, GeneralEdmund Allenby commanded theBritish forces that defeated theOttoman Turks and occupiedJerusalem. Britain issued theBalfour Declaration in November1917, declaring its plan to establisha Jewish homeland in Palestine,and the League of Nations ratifiedthe Declaration in 1922.

The League of Nations fellapart. But in November 1947,another international body—thenewly created United Nations—passed General AssemblyResolution 181, which included aplan to put the area aroundJerusalem under internationalcontrol. A year later, Arabs andIsraelis went to war, and theUnited Nations’ hopes for peace inthe region were dashed. From1947 to 1967, West Jerusalemremained under Israeli control,while Jordan administered the ter-ritory of East Jerusalem.

In the “Six-Day War” of 1967,Israeli forces countered Arabattacks and took control of EastJerusalem, uniting the whole cityunder Jewish rule for the first timein nearly 1,900 years. Not sincethe Roman general Titus and hisarmy destroyed the city in 70AD

had Jerusalem been under Jewishgovernance.

Since 1967, Jerusalem hasremained under Israeli administra-tion. Yet tensions persist in this

densely peopled city, with an esti-mated population above 700,000.About 32 percent of the city’s pop-ulation are Arab Muslims, whooften find themselves in conflictwith the 65 percent of the popula-tion who are Jewish.

Three Religions, One City

Jerusalem today is a city ofmany faiths; one survey in 2006identified 1,200 synagogues, 150churches and 70 mosques withinits boundaries.

Jews look to Jerusalem as thecity of the great prophets, and asthe capital of the Kingdom ofIsrael and Judah under King Davidand his son King Solomon.Ancient Israel’s first and secondtemples, in Jerusalem, were thecenter of Jewish worship until theRomans destroyed the city in70AD. Today, Jews worship at theWestern Wall, or Wailing Wall,which they believe is the only sur-viving element of the SecondTemple now accessible to Jewishworshipers.

Jerusalem is also the thirdmost holy city of Islam, afterMecca and Medina. Today, theMosque of Omar, also called theDome of the Rock, dominates theTemple Mount. The Arabic termfor the Temple Mount is al-Haramas-Sharif, which means “TheNoble Sanctuary.” Muslims believethat Muhammad ascended to heav-en from there.

Christians rememberJerusalem as the place where the

Savior was crucified, and where Hetaught in the Temple—and as theplace to which He will return toestablish His kingdom, withJerusalem as world capital.

Military MovementsProphesied

What does Bible prophecyreveal will happen to Jerusalem?Eventually, this ancient city willbe the capital of the wholeworld. But before that time, dra-matic military movements willaffect Jerusalem. A time willcome, near the end of the age,when enemy armies will invadethe Holy Land and surround thecity of Jerusalem. As Jesus ChristHimself warned, “But when yousee Jerusalem surrounded byarmies, then know that its deso-lation is near” (Luke 21:20).

These will not be just anyarmies of the Middle East; Christ’sprophecy shows that these will bearmies of the Gentiles. He contin-ued: “For these are the days ofvengeance, that all things whichare written may be fulfilled. Butwoe to those who are pregnant andto those who are nursing babies inthose days! For there will be greatdistress in the land and wrathupon this people. And they willfall by the edge of the sword, andbe led away captive into allnations. And Jerusalem will betrampled by Gentiles until thetimes of the Gentiles are fulfilled”(vv. 22–24).

Be sure to read the parallelaccounts in Matthew 24 andMark. 13. As you read these, notethat the destruction of Jerusalemin 70AD was a prophetic foreshad-owing of the end-time desolationdescribed in these prophecies.

After Jerusalem falls again toGentile control, for how long will

the Gentiles remain in charge? Theanswer is in the book of Revelation,which confirms that at the end ofthis age, Israel will once again losecontrol of Jerusalem. The ApostleJohn wrote: “Then I was given areed like a measuring rod. And theangel stood, saying, ‘Rise and meas-ure the temple of God, the altar,and those who worship there. Butleave out the court which is outsidethe temple, and do not measure it,for it has been given to theGentiles. And they will tread theholy city underfoot for forty-twomonths’” (Revelation 11:1–2).

Yes, Jerusalem will be underthe control of the Gentiles for 42months at the end of the age. Asyou read through the book ofRevelation, you will see that thisperiod of three and one-half yearsprecedes the return of Christ. Twoprophets of God will witness withgreat power during that sameperiod of three and one-half years(Revelation 11:3–15). These twowitnesses will contend with theGentile force then dominating theMiddle East.

Daniel’s Vision Explained

The prophet Daniel received avision from an angel, giving usanother perspective aboutJerusalem’s future. When he askedabout the meaning of the vision,the angel told him: “Go your way,Daniel, for the words are closed upand sealed till the time of the end”(Daniel 12:9). More than 2,500years later, we can now understandthese prophecies—this is the timeof the end! Then: “And from thetime that the daily sacrifice is takenaway, and the abomination of deso-lation is set up, there shall be onethousand two hundred and ninetydays” (v. 11). God reveals that atthe time of the end, shortly beforethe return of Christ, the daily sacri-

fice will be stopped, or “takenaway.” This obviously implies thatthe sacrifices must be started,before they can be stopped! Thereare indeed Orthodox Jews who arealready planning to reinstate animalsacrifices when it becomes possibleto do so. At the moment, however,Jews are not allowed to publiclyworship on the Temple Mount, so itremains to be seen where and whenthe Jews will begin sacrificing. Itwill likely take a national crisis toprecipitate that event.

Notice the other key itemDaniel mentions, “the abominationof desolation.” What is it?Historically, the Greek rulerAntiochus Epiphanes issued adecree in 167BC that prohibitedsacrifices in the Jerusalem Temple.The Jewish historian Josephusdescribed Antiochus’s actions: “He[Antiochus] also spoiled the tem-ple, and put a stop to the constantpractice of offering a daily sacrificeof expiation for three years and sixmonths.” Josephus also explainshow Antiochus profaned the altar.“Now Antiochus was not satisfiedeither with his unexpected takingthe city, or with its pillage, or withthe great slaughter he had madethere… he compelled the Jews todissolve the laws of their country,and to keep their infants uncircum-cised, and to sacrifice swine’s fleshupon the altar” (Wars of the Jews,Book I, Chapter 1, Sections 1–2).

Antiochus further profaned thetemple. He erected a statue ofJupiter Olympus in the temple anddirected everyone to worship it.This abomination, referred to inchapters 8 and 11 of Daniel’sprophecy, was a foreshadowing ofan end-time event. This is whatJesus said: “Therefore when you seethe ‘abomination of desolation,’spoken of by Daniel the prophet,standing in the holy place (whoeverreads, let him understand), then let

those who are in Judea flee to themountains” (Matthew 24:15–16).

Jesus warns us to be alert to anend-time abomination of desola-tion. Just as Antiochus Epiphanesprofaned the Temple in 167BC andprohibited the sacrifices, so afuture profane authority will pro-hibit sacrifices. What or who willbe this end-time Abomination ofDesolation? Notice: “Let no onedeceive you by any means; for thatDay will not come unless thefalling away comes first, and theman of sin is revealed, the son ofperdition, who opposes and exaltshimself above all that is called Godor that is worshiped, so that he sitsas God in the temple of God,showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:3–4).

Yes, a great false prophet willsit in the temple of God. You needto be alert. You need to under-stand the future. Do not let your-self be deceived.

This false prophet will performamazing signs. Notice this descrip-tion: “Then I saw another beastcoming up out of the earth, and hehad two horns like a lamb andspoke like a dragon. And he exer-cises all the authority of the firstbeast in his presence, and causesthe earth and those who dwell in itto worship the first beast, whosedeadly wound was healed. He per-forms great signs, so that he evenmakes fire come down from heav-en on the earth in the sight ofmen. And he deceives those whodwell on the earth by those signswhich he was granted to do in thesight of the beast, telling thosewho dwell on the earth to make animage to the beast who waswounded by the sword and lived”(Revelation 13:11–14).

While the Beast power con-trols Jerusalem, God’s two witness-es will prophesy and prepare theway for the Messiah, the King of

kings, to take over Jerusalem, andthe whole world. The book ofRevelation describes the work oftwo end-time prophets. “And Iwill give power to my two wit-nesses, and they will prophesy onethousand two hundred and sixtydays, clothed in sackcloth”(Revelation 11:3).

The book of Revelation goeson to explain that at the end oftheir witness, the Beast power willovercome and kill these twoprophets, but God will resurrectthem after three days, to the aston-ishment of their enemies. God willthen begin His judgment by caus-ing a great earthquake in the city.Seven thousand will die. Then theseventh trumpet will sound thegood news of the Messiah’s returnto earth. “Then the seventh angelsounded: And there were loudvoices in heaven, saying, ‘Thekingdoms of this world havebecome the kingdoms of our Lordand of His Christ, and He shallreign forever and ever!’” (v. 15).

Peace Is Coming

Today we live in a world ofwar and terrorism. Nations strivefor peace. But, as the Apostle Paulcautioned us, “As it is written:‘There is none righteous, no, notone; there is none who under-stands; there is none who seeksafter God’” (Romans 3:10–11). Hecontinues: “Their feet are swift toshed blood; destruction and mis-ery are in their ways; and the wayof peace they have not known.There is no fear of God beforetheir eyes” (vv. 15–18).

The only one who will bringus world peace, is the Messiah,Jesus Christ. He is coming back asKing of kings, and Lord of lords,as it tells us in Revelation 19:16.And Scripture tells us the exactlocation to which He will return:

“Then the LORD will go forth andfight against those nations, as Hefights in the day of battle. And inthat day His feet will stand on theMount of Olives, which facesJerusalem on the east” (Zechariah14:3–4). The Mount of Olives isjust east of the Temple Mount inJerusalem, across the KidronValley.

Jerusalem will be prosperousand flourishing when the Messiahrules the world from Jerusalem.Notice this description: “And inthat day it shall be that livingwaters shall flow from Jerusalem,half of them toward the easternsea and half of them toward thewestern sea; in both summer andwinter it shall occur. And theLORD shall be King over all theearth. In that day it shall be—‘TheLORD is one,’ and His name one”(Zechariah 14:8–9).

I hope you are looking forwardto that day foretold by the prophetIsaiah. “O Zion, you who bringgood tidings, get up into the highmountain; O Jerusalem, you whobring good tidings, lift up yourvoice with strength, lift it up, be notafraid; say to the cities of Judah,‘Behold your God!’” (Isaiah 40:9).

Yes, as we have seen, theMessiah is coming to Jerusalem!The whole world will soon under-stand, that the God of Abraham,

Isaac, and Jacob is the Messiah.Remember the Rock of Israel?Speaking of ancient Israel, theApostle Paul writes, “Moreover,brethren, I do not want you to beunaware that all our fathers wereunder the cloud, all passedthrough the sea, all were baptizedinto Moses in the cloud and in thesea, all ate the same spiritual food,and all drank the same spiritualdrink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followedthem, and that Rock was Christ”(1 Corinthians 10:1–4). Yes, thatRock was the Messiah—and Hewill soon return!

As Isaiah wrote: “Behold, theLord GOD shall come with a stronghand, and His arm shall rule forHim; behold, His reward is withHim, and His work before Him. Hewill feed His flock like a shepherd;He will gather the lambs with Hisarm, and carry them in His bosom,and gently lead those who are withyoung” (Isaiah 40:10–11).

Yes, the Lord will save Hispeople, and He will educate andwisely rule over all nations. Noticethis prophecy concerningJerusalem. “The word that Isaiahthe son of Amoz saw concerningJudah and Jerusalem. Now it shallcome to pass in the latter days that

With very few exceptions(such as Canada), the governments of most oil-produc-ing nations now hate the United States, and many arefaced with the threat of war at home. When troublescome, U.S. oil supplies are certain to be hit hard.

The political and economic situation in the MiddleEast can be likened to anopen barrel of gasoline—and Iran, Iraq, Syria, SaudiArabia and the U.S. are allplaying with fire around it.When will it explode?America’s actions in theMiddle East are deepeninglong-held Arab resentmentsagainst the world’s onlysuperpower. An all-out warbetween Sunni and ShiiteMuslims in the region is also avery real possibility; not onlywould war interrupt oil pro-duction, it would also prevent oil tankers from safelytransporting their product through the Persian Gulf.Experts warn that as tensions escalate in the MiddleEast, the price of a barrel of the “black gold” couldrocket to $100.00 or higher.

Trouble Brewing South of the Border

In 2005, Mexico sent the U.S. 1.7 million barrels ofoil per day. By December 2006, shipments were downto 1.2 million barrels daily. Mexican oil production isdecreasing; experts estimate that in just four years,Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex will reduceits production by half. A recent Money and Marketsreport pointed out that since oil revenues sustainMexico’s social welfare programs, a drop in those rev-enues will likely spur greater social unrest in Mexico,and increase the rate of illegal immigration to the U.S.(March 7, 2007).

What can the U.S. do in response? Because of theireconomic indebtedness, Americans have largely lost theability to direct their nation’s future. That power isincreasingly in the hands of bankers and governmentsoverseas, controlling the money and oil needed to

power our energy-dependent and debt-riddled nation.We are seeing the truth of the biblical maxim, “The richrules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to thelender” (Proverbs 22:7). Americans have been living onborrowed money for the last few years, using the inflat-ed value of real estate to take “equity” out of theirhomes and fuel an ever-more-extravagant lifestyle.

America the Broke!

The U.S. government isbroke! It must borrow morethan $2 billion per day tofund its programs at homeand its military operationsaround the globe. America’strade imbalance is also ahuge problem for its econ-omy. At the current spend-ing rate, North Americansbuy $810 billion more ingoods and services each

year than they sell overseas. The TreasuryDepartment’s printing presses are spewing out new cur-rency at a frantic rate. These factors together put thenation in grave danger that inflation will soon spin out ofcontrol. As the dollar declines, everyone buying and sell-ing in dollars will see their purchasing power reduced.The dollar holds its value only so long as people aroundthe world have confidence in its strength. If you haveU.S. dollar holdings, what is your level of confidence?

Thankfully, for the time being, the nations holdingU.S. IOUs have not demanded payment. They know thatdoing so too quickly would destroy the value of the dol-lars they own. Just one rogue nation intent on destroyingthe U.S. could start a stampede away from the dollar byquickly selling off its U.S. currency holdings—bringingthe U.S. down almost overnight in an economic crash.However, any nation doing this would be committingeconomic suicide, as this would also plunge the wholeworld into the depths of another Great Depression,bringing worldwide political and social instability—andin all probability leading to World War III! Instead ofrisking such chaos, many national treasuries around theworld are slowly diversifying out of dollars, moving intogold, euros and other financial instruments they consid-er more stable and secure. The 400-po in tplunge in the U.S.s t o c k m a r k e t i ne a r l y M a rc h o f2 0 0 7 , w h e nAmerican markets fellin sympathy with decliningAsian exchanges, illustrated how nationaleconomies are intertwined. International currencytraders had been borrowing billions of Japanese yen atlow interest rates, and investing in higher-yield mar-kets around the world. When the central bank in Japanbegan to raise interest rates, a sell-off that began inShanghai ignited panic selling around the globe.

For years, foreign investments in the U.S. havepropped up the “housing bubble” which made cheaphomeowner mortgages available to poorly qualifiedbuyers. As those investments leave American soil, wecan expect real estate values to fall in many U.S. com-munities. This in turn will increase the number offoreclosures, and will slow the construction industryby raising costs for new borrowers. Warren Buffett,perhaps America’s best-known investor, referred tothese international money flows as “financialweapons of mass destruction” (Worldwide Credit‘Event’ on Verge of Going Boom,” Register Guard,November 14, 2006).

The Government Will Not Save Us

The costs of meeting America’s ever-increasingwants and needs is driving the nation to the poor-

house. War abroad and social pro-grams at home are devouring U.S.resources, even while the hungrywolf of inflation is at the door of theaverage citizen struggling to paythis month’s bills.

David Walker, head of theU.S. Government AccountabilityOffice, recently warned, “We’reunderwater to the tune of $50

trillion, and that number isgoing up three to four trillion a year... we

need to start getting serioussoon to make surethat our future is bet-

ter than our past.”America owes a

significant portion of itsdebt to nations it defeat-

ed in World War II. Godwarned that if His people

did not obey Him, theywould have to serve their

enemies. “I will give as plun-der your wealth, all your

treasures, and your highplaces of sin within all your

borders. And you, even your-self, shall let go of your heritage

which I gave you; and I will cause you to serve yourenemies in the land which you do not know; for youhave kindled a fire in My anger which shall burn for-ever” (Jeremiah 17:3–4). Just as a family that cannotpay its mortgage payment will lose its home, so toowill Americans lose their land if their national debtcannot be paid.

As gas prices rise—along with the cost of food andother necessities—due to scarcity and inflation, howwill the average citizen cope? Will you be prepared forwhat is coming? To whom will you look for your safe-ty and security—the governments of this world, or thegreat Creator God who made you and loves you?

The U.S. and the other English-speaking nationsare losing God’s blessings and protection, as describedin Deuteronomy 28. However, you can protect yourselfpersonally from the worst effects of the coming crash.God will intervene on behalf of those who are obeyingHim and seeking His protection. Turn to Him, whilethere is still time!

The Tomb of Jesus?Did you watch The Lost Tomb of Jesus—the

recent Discovery Channel special produced byfilmmakers James Cameron (of Titanic fame) andSimcha Jacobovici? It caused quite a stir when itaired, exploiting society’s current fascinationwith the Da Vinci Code spirit of “creative history.”

The show points us to a tomb near Jerusalem,which was thought to be uninteresting archaeolog-ically when it was discovered in 1980. The tombcontained ossuaries (coffins, or “bone boxes”)bearing a few names shared by Jesus’ family mem-bers—and one labeled “Jesus [Yeshua] son ofJoseph.” The filmmakers say this is the tomb ofJesus’ family, and that He was buried there—defi-nitely not resurrected from the dead.

What are we to make of such a claim? Well,for starters, scholars and other experts quicklypointed out that the show’s assemblage andinterpretation of the facts represented bad sci-ence and pseudo-archaeology. Even the proba-bility calculations were questionably applied.

In fact, the program’s loose science and slip-shod “archaeology” aside, the arguments thathave proven the truth of Christianity for cen-turies are as strong as ever, and suffered noteven a dent from this stunt.

Imagine the scene. A hush spreads across thecourt of King Agrippa, as the Apostle Paul windsdown his defense,discussing thecrucifixion andresurrection ofJesus Christ:“This thing wasnot done in a cor-ner. King Agrippa,do you believethe prophets? Iknow that you dobelieve.” Agrippathen says to Paul, “Very passionately delivered,Paul, but your tale is a fantasy. The tomb of thisman you say rose from the dead is there, thisday, outside Jerusalem! His bones rest alongsidethose of his mother and the rest of his family.Why you persist in this horrible and perverse lieto your own destruction is beyond me! Festus isright: you truly are mad!”

However, that is not how the exchangebetween Paul and Agrippa really happened; youcan read for yourself how Luke, the first centuryChurch historian, recorded it in Acts 26:22–32.Even in the white-hot heat of terrible first centurypersecution, when so many were desperate tostamp the young Church out, no one was able toproduce a body—let alone an entire family tomb—to refute the Christians’ persistent claim of Jesus’resurrection. No one! No matter how passionate-ly the Church’s enemies searched, no matter howviciously they interrogated the many Christiansthey arrested—there was simply no body to befound to demonstrate the Christians’ “lie.”

Paul and the other apostles would have becomelaughingstocks if Jesus’ tomb and body could havebeen produced. Instead, history regards them asmen who “turned the world upside down” (Acts17:6), who changed the course of history forever.

Is it reasonable to believe that the religiousand political authorities of Jesus’ time could not—with all the power and resources at their disposal—discover the location of a family tomb located inthe very area from which this disruptive new mes-sage was spreading? Are we to believe that Jesus’original followers voluntarily suffered unimaginabletorments—even violent deaths—to proclaim themessage of the risen Christ if they knew the mes-

sage was a lie?The men who produced The Lost

Tomb of Jesus want you to believeso—but believing their scenariorequires far more faith than a bad-sci-ence-but-ripping-yarn television spe-cial deserves.

The recipe for The Lost Tomb ofJesus consists of a pinch of fact, sur-rounded by a heaping cup of fancifulstorytelling. Yet not even the truthwithin that pinch casts any doubt on

the truth that has defeated all challengers for near-ly two millennia: the tomb of Jesus Christ wasempty. He is risen, and He lives today.

the Kingdom of God. This world-ruling kingdom will be governedby the Messiah, the King of kings,Jesus Christ! That is the goodnews we all look forward to. Ihope that you are looking forwardto that time of world peace! Ihope that you are yearning for theKingdom to come! I hope you arepraying for the Kingdom to come,as we are taught to pray inMatthew 6:10!

Notice this beautiful descrip-tion of future life in Jerusalem:“Thus says the LORD: ‘I will returnto Zion, and dwell in the midst ofJerusalem. Jerusalem shall becalled the City of Truth, TheMountain of the LORD of hosts,The Holy Mountain.’ Thus saysthe LORD of hosts: ‘Old men andold women shall again sit in the

The city of Jerusalem willfinally live up to its name, “City ofPeace,” because the Messiah, JesusChrist will actually dwell there.Only then will the whole worldbegin to experience genuine peace.

Jerusalem will be the capital ofplanet earth, and you can have apart in the glorious Kingdomruled from that capital.Tomorrow’s world will be heresooner than you realize. As eventsmove toward this wonderful cli-max, be sure you are watchingworld news in the light of Bibleprophecy!

that we do not need moral guidelines from the Bible,and that “our own search for happiness” is sufficientguide for morality (Letter to a Christian Nation, pp.23–25). The Apostle Peter warned that “scoffers willcome in the last days, walking according to their ownlusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His com-ing?’” (2 Peter 3:3–4). Dawkins scoffs at the idea ofGod. Harris ridicules the idea of the virgin birth andthe resurrection of Jesus and then makes the interest-ing observation, “If the basic tenets of Christianity aretrue, then there are some very grim surprises in storefor nonbelievers like myself” (Letter to a ChristianNation, p. 5). Today, in our “enlightened” and “intel-lectually sophisticated” world, many call homosexual-ity and same-sex marriages “good” and ridicule anyonewho promotes or follows biblical morality. Yet the Biblewarns, “Woe to those who call evil good, and goodevil… Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes…because they have rejected the law of the LORD ofhosts, and despised the word of the Holy One ofIsrael. Therefore the anger of the LORD is arousedagainst His people” (Isaiah 5:20–25). The Bible clear-ly reveals that a time of judgment is coming(Revelation 11:15–18)—Dawkins, Harris and theircollaborators have reason to be concerned!

Numerous prophecies also speak of a revival ofreligious activity at the end of the age. The ApostlePaul foresaw the appearance of a prominent end-time religious figure who will deceive millions withmiracles (2 Thessalonians 2). The prophet Isaiahpredicted that this person would promote an ecu-menical movement of “daughter” churches back toa mother church which claims to be the only truechurch (Isaiah 47:1–9). The book of Revelationindicates that this prominent religious figure willinsert itself into world politics and promote therevival of a European power with roots that go backto the Roman Empire and that this revival will haveglobal implications (Revelation 13; 17; 18). Allthese events will occur at a time when unbelieversare launching vicious attacks against God and theBible. Dawkins dismisses the book of Revelation, ofcourse, calling it “one of the weirdest books in theBible” and asserting that the Apostle John wrote itwhile he was “on acid” (Dawkins, pp. 257–258).But the time is soon coming when Dawkins’ attackswill be seen for what they are, and the Bible will berecognized as the source of truth that explains whatis happening in our world and what will happen inour future. If you read your Bible, you will continueto see how true biblical religion is relevant andprophetically significant in ways that few realizetoday!

truth” (John 4:24). Jesus Christ also stated,“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth”(John 17:17).

So, to worship the true God—the God who inspiredthe Bible—we must zealously study the Bible. We must“feed” on Christ by saturating our minds and heartswith God’s word—by constantly reading with an openmind, meditating on and honestly “seeking” God’s willas revealed in His inspired Scripture. Then we willlearn how to walk with God, how to pray to God andhow to “fellowship” with God. Otherwise, like most ofthe billions of confused people in this world, we willend up serving God with our human imagination—inthe wrong way—perhaps by following a false religion orsimply letting our human imagination tell us what todo. Yet the Bible strictly warns us not to do that!“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its endis the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25).

What may seem like the right way of life may bedirectly contrary to the will of our Creator! So wemust all be willing to study, to meditate and to “proveall things”—to compare any and all of our ideas andphilosophies with what God tells us in the inspiredpages of the Bible! Then we can truly “pour out ourhearts” to God in fervent and continual prayer! We canthen, in absolute faith, ask Him to guide our lives, leadus and use us in His service—and bring us into Hiseverlasting Kingdom!

This desire must be first in our minds and in ourlives, as expressed by the actions we take. As Jesussaid, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His right-eousness, and all these things shall be added to you”(Matthew 6:33).

Many Old Testament scriptures show us how Godtruly blessed all the men and women who put forth theeffort to “seek” Him. Notice: “Now the Spirit of Godcame upon Azariah the son of Oded. And he went outto meet Asa, and said to him: ‘Hear me, Asa, and allJudah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you while youare with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found byyou; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you’” (2Chronicles 15:1–2). How did they respond? “Then

they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD God oftheir fathers with all their heart and with all their soul”(v. 12).

The Bible describes how Uzziah was blessed whenhe walked with God. “He sought God in the days ofZechariah, who had understanding in the visions ofGod; and as long as he sought the LORD, God made himprosper” (2 Chronicles 26:5).

Again, God’s word helps us see how and why theserighteous kings were blessed. “Thus Hezekiah didthroughout all Judah, and he did what was good andright and true before the LORD his God. And in everywork that he began in the service of the house of God,in the law and in the commandment, to seek his God,he did it with all his heart. So he prospered” (2Chronicles 31:20–21).

The lesson is that if we truly want to do the willof the great God—who created us and who gives uslife and breath—we should zealously “seek” Himwith all our hearts. We should do this by urgentlymaking time to focus on God’s will by studyingwhat He has revealed in the Bible, then meditatingcarefully on what the Bible says His will truly is—then fervently praying to our Father in heaven forthe strength and understanding to know and do Hiswill. Finally, we must act on His will, and “walk withGod”—as did Abraham, David, Jesus and the manyothers whom God sets for us as examples in inspiredScripture.

Then, absolutely, God will hear us and answer us ifwe respond to His will, as He has done for those beforeus. Remember, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday,today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

For, as God promised His people when they werein captivity in Babylon, “I know the thoughts that Ithink toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace andnot of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then youwill call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will lis-ten to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, whenyou search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah29:11–13).
