We believe in safe boating -

take an Arrowhead class

THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR On the East Coast, they are winterizing boats to protect them from harsh winter storms and freezing tempuratures. Out here, we are gearing up for our Winter cruising that includes holiday boat parades in the harbors, coastal cruising and destination Santa Catalina Island. We see no need to slow down our boating activities just because the calendar says Winter. For us, Winter is an option -- and we opt out! I want to thank all of you who have participated this year in the Squadron and District activities. I

want to again welcome our many new members and invite them to join in on all the fun. We have many ac-tivities coming up that are highlighted in these pages including a Christmas Party, a New Year’s Eve progres-sive dinner in Long Beach Shoreline Marina, and a Winter Cruise to Avalon. For those who have not been to Avalon in January, we have had great weather and very smooth seas the last 3 years. As to my own boat, the new engines are in and fine tuning of the systems is underway. We should have the engine break-in and check-out runs complete in the next several days. It has a been a slow process for us, but we have paid a lot of attention to detail. I have insisted that every inch of the engine compartment be inspected and cleaned and painted so that we can have confidence in our boat with the new engines. Assuming the end result is as great as we expected, Carri and I will be on the boat even more this Winter and next year. Also, as promised, I will report on the cost of this re-power and I believe you may be surprized at how low my cost was, compared to stories you have heard about other such projects. Mark L. Gunn, JNCommander

Our entertainment activity for the January 2012, meeting will involve all of us, as we’ll be having our long an-ticipated and much requested nautical raffle! Everyone is encouraged to immediately begin scouting through your garage, back car seat, dock box, bilge, anchor locker, flat bed pick-up truck, and where ever else you hide your special and unused nautical treasures which you have been saving for all these years but don’t re-ally know why or what for. Well here is the answer: You’ve been hoarding them for our Arrowhead Power Squadron raffle this coming January! So, begin searching them out now so you’ll have tons of great “stuff” to bring to our January meeting.

And as always, please continue to bear in mind that if there are programs that you believe would be of interest to our fine group of nautical notables, continue to make a notation and share it with the AO for 2012 as I am certain s/he will appreciate your support.

LOG BENDING PARTY by Barbara Sausser

We Arrowheads always have a good time when we meet for a potluck to fold, address, label, and stamp our prize winning LOG newsletter.

The October get-together was no different. The weather was perfect. Stephen and Carolyn Lebo were the hosts at their lovely home in Hemet.

Stephen grilled bratwurst and entertained us with his new hobby, playing the Ukelele. Cal Amodeo was encouraged to bring in his accor-dion and we were soon singing lots of old songs.

Everyone contributed to the meal as usual. Cupcakes with candles celebrated Darrell’s 80th birthday.

Among those attending were Mark and Carrie Gunn, Wendy Sherwood, Debbie Neal, Cal and Connie Amodeo, Gil and Joyce Moe, Howard Fuller, Brent Freeberg, and Darrrell and Barbara Sausser.

My Friends, By the time you read this, Thanksgiving will have passed and Christmas is fast approaching. May each of you have a Blessed and Peaceful Holiday Season. Bob Cozad’s Seamanship is in testing. I know this because I received a certification letter from National that said Debbie Neal and Arnold Rowe attained the grade of Advanced Pilot. However I do not have the results for the rest of the Seamanship class. Next class: Weather (take this class and you will never look at weather the same way again) When: 07:00 PM, 1900 hours, class starts on Thursday, 5 January 2012 Where: Wiley’s Scuba Locker, 1043 W. La Cadena Drive, Riverside, Ca. 92501 Instructor: John Walker, contact John at (909)792-2654 or [email protected] Weather class will probably take 8 to 10 weeks. I have a need for an instructor to teach an Engine Maintenance Class. See you on the water

CATCH AMERICA’S CUP SPIRIT

The America’s Cup World Series has happened in San Diego 2 weeks ago with large spectator crowds on the Broadway pier. Next summer will be the Lou Vitton qualifiying races in July 2012 on San Francisco Bay. The actual America’s cup races happen on the West Coast - culminating with 2013’s two – month races in San Francisco Bay.

Follow the America’s Cup (americascup.com) and the U.S. team Oracle Racing (oracleracing;com) blogs and websites to stay on top of news lead-ing up to the July-September 2013 event, when 70 ft catamarans drag race on San Francisco Bay.

We are all looking forward to the annual Arrowhead Holiday Celebration. Plan to be at San Bernardino Elks Lodge Sunday December 11 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. Please get your reservations in to Connie Amodeo by Friday, December 9. If you did not get your invitation in the mail, or if you have questions, please call her at (951) 522-0847. This promises to be an afternoon filled with friends, laughter, gifts, songs, and killer desserts. We are continuing with our tradition of supporting the 29 Palms Marine Base Toys for Tots, so please bring an unwrapped toy. Remember, reservations are required.

We are planning something a little different for New Year’s Eve this year. How does a Marina Progressive Dinner sound? We had such fun at Catalina Harbor that we thought it would be good to do this at Shoreline Marina. Many of our members have boats berthed there, and those of us who do not are going to travel and obtain guest slips for a couple of nights. Please let me know if you are interested so we can exchange details and arrange the dinner and party route.

Mark your calendars for our Fourth Annual Weather Permitting January Avalon Cruise. This will be the week-end of January 13-16, 2012. Plan a great time in a beautiful place. Please let me know if you are interested in participating. If you do not have a boat, you can always book passage on the Catalina Express and join in the festivities.

We are working on the calendar of events for next year. There is still time to add some activities, so call or e-mail me if you have an idea for an event you would like to suggest, and the date(s) you recommend.

Please plan to attend the Change Of Watch Saturday February 11, 2012 at the San Bernardino Elks. Details will be announced in the January Log, and invitations will be sent.

It is time to update the information for the Squadron Roster. If you have any corrections to report, please advise me or Barry Freeman by December 16. There will be roster correction forms at the Holiday Celebra-tion. During this wonderful season of giving, remember that you have something priceless to share – and please donate blood.

page 6Come Join the Arrowhead Weather class

The Power Squadron Weather class covers a very good survey of weather causes and effects. This class answers the how, why and maybe even the when will the weather do whatever comes next. Knowing how and when to observe weather indicators is stressed in the class.

We’ve added a little bit of local knowledge to the class including how to forecast a santa ana wind storm and whether you will be able to varnish the boat next weekend.

We need to know how many books to order and whether we need a larger classroom. Currently, it is scheduled to start at Wiley’s Scuba Locker just north of Columbia ave. next to the 215 freeway, January 5th, from 7 to 9 PM. It will take about 12 weeks.

Please RSVP via e-mail to John Walker, [email protected]

Thanks, we’ll make it worth your effort. -

WELCOME ABOARD

a monthly column to introduce our new members

Tony Wileyby Debbie Neal

Tony had a dream. In fact, his dream was so vivid, that 23 years ago he sent a post card to John Walker with a photo of where his boat would someday be lo-cated. While Tony has not yet achieved his dream, he is currently taking steps to move closer to that dream by taking power squadron classes. He would like to own a 40 foot sailboat which he would use to take fellow scuba divers to the south seas for diving ex-cursions. Tony is especially interested in water arche-ology and would like to find and identify ship wrecks of historical significance. He has made several trips to the south seas and is affectionately known, by the locals, as Ratu Tony. Ultimately, he would like to live on board his boat in the south seas. At the present time, Tony owns and operates the Scuba Locker. He has owned his business for 23 years. We wish Tony the best in achieving his dream. In the mean time, we welcome Tony to the Power Squadron and hope to see him at up coming events.

A NEW CRUISE ACTIVITY & log Bending too

We have a NEW cruise! Plan to join in on New Year’s Eve at Shoreline Marina, Long Beach. Bring your boat, get a guest slip (if your boat is not already berthed there) and participate in a New Year’s Progressive Dinner and party. December 31 is a Saturday this year, so plan the weekend on the water – with electricity available. Let me know if you would like to participate so we can work out the details and fine tune our party route.

Also, our Fourth Annual Weather Permitting Cruise to Avalon is set for Martin Luther King week-end, Janu-ary 13-16, 2012. Last year we had 22 people – and the weather cooperated. Avalon in January is delightful. If you are not able to bring your boat over, plan on book-ing passage on the Catalina Express so you can partici-pate in the fun. It is extremely important that I know who is planning to attend so I can communicate last minute details and confirm the weather situation.

See you on the water!

Rick
