Eight teams of disabledand non-disabled peoplespent one of the last

summer weekends, which intrue Scottish style proved to be a wash-out, on what is the ultimate challenge;conquering the UK’s highestpeak Ben Nevis.

The Bowmore Ben NevisChallenge was theculmination of months oftraining and preparation forthe teams who were guidedby ex-SAS officer and TVPresenter Ken Hames. Despite the appallingweather with almost constantrain and, at times, zerovisibility the teams workedtheir way across treacherousterrain, avoiding sheer dropsand contending with largeboulders and fences.

The first team to the top wasled by Rosie Smith (24) fromNitshill in Glasgow. She andher team ‘Rosie’s Runners’made the summit in just 5hours and 20 minutes. ‘Despitehaving attempted this before,I was still nervous’ said Rosie,‘but I was determined to makeit to the top this time, havinghad to turn back before. I’mecstatic to have got to thesummit.’

Andy Steen (45) fromGourock and his team ‘WeWant To Go Hames’ was secondto the summit. He commented:“How many people can saythey’ve been up Ben Nevis?I’ve joined an elite club! I hopethis event will help dispel themyth that sometimes existsthat disabled people need tobe wrapped in cotton wool!”

Whyte & Mackay has won theWhisky Magazine’s Innovatorof the Year Award for itsrecreation of a 100-year-oldwhisky left under theAntarctic ice by famousexplorer Ernest Shackleton.

Described as the “whisky story of the century”, the so-calledShackleton replica – properly knownas Mackinlay’s – was four years inthe making by the time the whiskywas found, excavated, shipped toScotland and finally reproduced.

Whyte & Mackay’s master

blender Richard Paterson picked upthe award at the ceremony. He said,“I am absolutely delighted. This hasbeen the highlight of my 40 yearcareer to date in whisky, but wouldnot have been possible without theefforts of a vast team of people bothin and outside the company.

“But my biggest thanks go tothe Antarctic Heritage Trust, basedin New Zealand, who found thewhisky and subsequently helped us get some bottles back toScotland. We have created a whiskywhich gives people a real taste of

the past.”Paterson spent eight weeks

marrying and blending a range ofmalts together to recreate the 100year old whisky.

The bottle is now on sale for£100, with 5% from every salebeing donated back to the AntarcticHeritage Trust. With 50,000 bottlesbeing produced, it is hoped that theTrust will receive £250,000.

National Geographic alsorecorded an exclusive documentaryabout the whole process which isdue to air at the end of this year.

NE WSn Ardbeg Alligator, wasunveiled in Septemer. Thislimited edition malt is theresult of years ofexperimentation by theArdbeg Distillery and itsteam headed up by Dr. BillLumsden,.

It’s so called because ofthe cask it is stored in whichhave been subjected to“Alligator Charring” themethod of charring (orburning) the inside of oakcasks before they are filledwith spirit. The burnt woodstaves take on theappearance of an alligator’sscales, hence the name. Theheart of Alligator is spiritmatured in ‘Level 4’ casks -the most intense type ofcharring possible.

This winter, Bowmore, the first Islay Single Malt whisky, hascollaborated withwhisky writer and Islayresident, Martine Nouet, known as ‘The Queen ofthe Still’ to create theIslay Taste Map. The map, which is the first of itskind, is the ideal guide tothe complex and veryvaried characters of Islay’seight magical distilleries:Ardbeg, Bruichladdich,Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila,Kilchoman, Lagavulin,Laphroaig and Bowmore. Not only is it useful tobartenders but consumerstoo can check it out online.

The map uses colour-coordinated taste profilesto illustrate how each ofthe elements is reflected inthe whiskies from eachdistillery. THERE’S GOOD NEWS on the whisky front in amongst what seems to beinterminable economic doom and gloom. Recent Scotch Whisky Associationexports statistics show that sales in Asia rose by 33% while sales increased inCentral and South America too. While the USA also proved popular spot fordrinking our national drink. MSP and Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, RichardLochhead, said, “It is clear whisky is leading the way with another record year -outstripping all trends and reaching new markets each year. We have greatambition for exports from Scotland. Other industries should be learning from thelong term strategy and continuing investment of the Scotch Whisky industry.”

If you want to buy a very special bottle ofwhisky – then the Glen Garioch 1986could be for you. Twenty five years ofpatience have been rewarded with therelease of Glen Garioch’s latest smallbatch vintage expression, the GlenGarioch 1986. At the end of Paul McCartney’s Long and Winding Roaddown the Kintyre peninsula sits the small settlement ofCampbeltown. Home to around 5000 people, The

affectionately-nicknamed Wee Toon has a history much richerthan many would expect as the former Whisky Capital of theWorld and one-time base for 37 different distilleries. It retainsits status as one of Scotland’s distinct whisky producing regionsand today boasts three working distilleries. Undoubtedly thebest known of the trio, and the whisky which has become theflagship of the region, is Springbank.

Springbank Distillery is unique. It is the oldest independentfamily owned distillery in Scotland. Founded in 1828 on thesite of Archibald Mitchell's illicit still, the Springbank Distilleryis now in the hands of his great great great grand son, HedleyG. Wright.

Owned by Mr Wright's J&A Mitchell &Co Ltd, Springbank is the only distillery inScotland to carry out the full productionprocess on the one site. 100% of thetraditional floor malting, maturation andbottling is done at the distillery inCampbeltown.

It produces the most hand madewhisky in Scotland, with traditionalproduction methods being usedthroughout the process, and humaninvolvement at each and every stage.

It is the only distillery in Scotland tohave never chill-filtered, nor do we addany artificial colourings to any of oursingle malts.

It is the only distillery in Scotland toproduce three different single malts,Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn, using three different production methods.

Userreviews that people haveposted are in the main verypositive, although some dofocus on the fact that this appcan be a bit limited if you don’tshare the developer’s views. Forexample, one post commented,‘The reviews are kinda short, but spot on. I hated to spend alot on this app without testingfirst, but I was not disappointed.Hope future updates add morefeature & not just more reviews.’

The interestingthing about thisapp is that itpresents

INTERVIEW

16 DRAM

What brought you into theWhisky Industry?I am part of the 4th Generation ofthe family who own and manageGordon & MacPhail so I havebeen involved in the whiskyindustry for a large part of mylife. Before joining G&M what wereyou doing?I completed an Honours Degreein Software Engineering and aMasters in Marketing, followingthat I spent a year travelling andworking in Australia beforeworking in IT for a constructioncompany in Edinburgh. I thenstarted with Gordon & MacPhailin March 2008 and carried out a 2year Management TrainingProgram, which involved workingthrough every area of thebusiness. What do you do on a day-to-day basis?Currently my role within Gordon& MacPhail is split between UKSales and Marketing.

As part of my marketing role Ilook after our Digital Platforms. This has been particularly busy atthe moment as we have justlaunched our new Gordon &MacPhail website and will belaunching our new BenromachWebsite shortly, as well as tryingto expand our Social Mediafollowing.

As part of my UK Sales role I

look after our customers in theFort William area and also try andget involved with as manytastings and exhibitions aspossible. You must have faced a fewchallenges, what would yousay was the biggest one?I think the biggest challenge atthe moment is the currenteconomic conditions. It is verychallenging times for everyone inthe licence trade. However I feelGordon & MacPhail providesexcellent customer relations andoffers a very flexible service tohelp meet our customer needs. Would you order whisky on anight out?Yes! Working for Gordon &MacPhail I am very fortunate as Iget to sample a number of the350 fantastic whiskies we bottlefrom throughout Scotland.

If I had to choose one it wouldbe from our own distilleryBenromach 10 Years Old, it hasjust the perfect balance ofsweetness and complexity tomake it my favourite dram. How do you enthuse yourfriends about whisky?I am very passionate aboutwhisky and I feel it rubs off onthem!

I feel there is a whisky styleout there for everyone sosometimes it is just a matter ofhelping them find the right one,

if it is lighter style Lowland, peatyor a sherried Speyside. When you are not workingwhat do you like to do?Well apart from trying newwhiskies, I spend a lot of my timeon the water. I grew up in a smallfishing village and spent everyweekend and holiday sailing andracing. It is something I havecontinued to do and I compete

Whisky, software & sailingWhisky is in Richard Urquhart’s blood. He tells us why.

throughout the UK andsometimes Europe.

One of my most memorablesailing experiences so far wasback in 2007 when I took part inthe Clipper Round the WorldYacht Race, which Benromachsponsored. It gave theopportunity to race from SouthAfrica to Australia and sail in theSouthern Ocean, which has been

one of my ambitions since Istarted sailing. What’s your favourite bar, andwhere do you like to eat? This is a hard one to answer; Iguess it depends on where I amand who I am with:

If I am in Glasgow with somefriends I have been known to popin to the Oran Mor or TheUbiquitous Chip they both have

great atmosphere and a greatselection of whisky.

If I am through in Edinburgh Ihave some great meals with mywife in the Magnum restaurantand a chilled out drink or two inthe Albanach bar.

Inverness is reasonably close(compared to Edinburgh andGlasgow) so I love to go andenjoy the Italian food at Riva.

One of the newest whisky bars to open in Scotland is TheWhiski Rooms in Edinburgh. The new bar, which opened inthe summer is not just a bar, instead it is a bar, bistro and

shop. It is situated on North Bank Street just off the Mound andone of the reasons that the bar boasts a shop is that owners Anneand Gary Still, who also own the Whiski Bar on High Street, werecomplying with customers requests. Says Anne, “We were alwaysbeing asked by our customers where they could go and buy thewhisky we were serving, so we thought why not open a whiskyshop with a bar attached. That way, customers could purchasestraight away the whisky they’d tried in the bar. We have 500whiskies in the shop and 300 in the bar.”

Meanwhile the Whiski Bar’s the couple’s original bar picked upthis year’s Glenmorangie Whisky Bar of the Year award with theother finalists being The Fiddler’s in Drumnadrochit, TheBallygrant in Islay and The Anderson in Fortrose. All excellentplaces to try whisky.

TASTING NOTESThe great thing about malt whisky is that people can taste a whole variety of flavours inthe liquid. Whisky connoisseurs have a host of descriptives, on this page we give yousome that are used to describe the various Island malts. When we talk about nose wemean smell, and palate means the taste. The Finish, is the taste that remains once youhave swallowed.
