January 13, 2019 Bap sm of the Lord

From the Pastor’s Deskw

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We have come to the end of the Christmas Season and the beginning of Ordinary Time, and as good as I was about using my Advent Season to prepare myself for the coming of Christ, Christmas itself was still a whirlwind. Looking back over the past few weeks my energies are spent, between funerals, extra liturgical celebrations, especially Masses, in and out of the parish, and the general business of the parish, I could use a couple of days off. But that’s not going to happen. This year we are looking at a variety of projects, ones that will improve the appearance of the parish grounds, ones that are necessary for the proper functioning of the parish, and others that will allow us to enjoy the 100th Anniversary of the parish, as we begin the next hundred years. What is on the checklist for 2019? As for maintenance, we are looking at a new roof on the parish center, cleaning the exterior of the church, replacing more exterior lights and adding to the existing lights, and clearing some of the overgrown landscaping and planting according to a set plan. There are a couple of interior projects, such as closets for the church sacristy, replacing ceiling tiles in the rectory basement and doing other repairs so that this area is in proper condition for the youth ministry and young adult apostolate. New carpeting in the sanctuary and music areas will be installed, not only to prepare the interior of the church for the opening Mass, but also because we have to replace weak boards underneath our music ministry. Our 100th Anniversary celebrations will begin with the 5pm Mass on March 2nd, celebrated by Bishop Barres, with a reception to follow. Many people have already signed up for the pilgrimage to Italy in June; for those still interested, contact M and M Travel at 1(800)773-2660. July 4th through the 7th, we will be having our parish festival, with rides, entertainment, gaming and refreshments. Just a couple of weeks after, we will celebrate our annual feast day, with a Mass and BBQ on July 20th; by which time we should have the bocci court in proper condition, as there is rumor of a Bocci tournament. September 27th, we will have the Centennial Ball at the Mediterranean Manor, details should be coming to the bulletin soon. Of course, we are a diehard parish, and as such we celebrate our anniversary for an entire year, even though we have not planned every event yet, but we will have our 100th Anniversary Valentine Dance in February 2020. On a spiritual side, we welcome Fr. Luke from the Friars of the Renewal who will offer our parish mission March 23rd to the 28th. For those who are looking forward to the following year, we will be blessed with a Passionist Mission to wrap up our 100th Anniversary. In between we will have Dr. Scott Hahn, who should be familiar to many of you who have benefited from Light-house Media; he is the author of Rome Sweet Rome; A Father Who Keeps His Promises: God's Covenant Love in Scripture; The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth and many other books. Last year we were blessed to host the Relics of the Crucifixion, and during our anniversary year we will be blessed again. There will also be the offering of a virtual pilgrimage to Lourdes. Details will follow as we finalize dates for these events. With all these things going on, we have attracted the notice of many people, from the diocese, and from surrounding parishes, as a result we have many new friends and some returning friends. Our parish is growing, experiencing what Bishop barres has described as dramatic missionary growth, and the secret to this is clear, because we are living out authentic Christian lives in witness to what we have received from Christ. As people of the promise, we recognize that the Resurrected Christ is in our midst, that what He has said in Sacred Scripture, in the Gospel, is Truth, and that from the Altar, we participate in the life of Heaven; anticipating the day when we will all be like Him, to live in Eternal Communion with each other and our God. That is how we witness as a Welcoming Eucharistic Community. Pax, Fr. Henry

The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2019

CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as “one mightier than I.” But he did as Jesus asked, and the “Holy Spirit descended” and heaven’s voice spoke to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son.” Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today’s sec-ond reading, he announces the heart of the message, “peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God’s word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Isaiah speaks of the Servant whom the Lord up-holds; he shall bring forth justice to the nations (Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7) or Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11. Psalm — The Lord will bless his people with peace (Psalm 29) or Psalm 104. Second Reading — Jesus was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit; he went out healing and doing good (Acts 10:34-38) or Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7. Gospel — A voice comes from heaven proclaiming Jesus as the beloved Son, with whom God is well pleased (Luke 3:15-16, 21-22). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — Miren a mi siervo, en quien tengo mis compla-cencias (Isaías 42:1-4, 6-7) o Isaías 40:1-5, 9-11. Salmo — Te alabamos, Señor (Salmo 29 [28]) o Salmo 104 (103).
