  • A Comprehensive Approach

Focusing on the Environment, Social and responsible Governance for the Future

  • From Joseph A. Mills, President and CEO of Samson Resources II, LLC

    A note from our CEO…

Samson was founded in 1971, grew through acquisitions and successful oil and gas exploration and has divested many assets over the years to become what it is today..... a privately held pure-play Powder River Basin exploration and production company. We strive to provide exceptional value to our shareholders through our drilling and operational activities and are committed to being a responsible Corporate Citizen in all aspects of our business.

Our focus on Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) issues helps Samson monitor its business to ensure we are acting in a way that investors and our larger society require and expect from a good Corporate Citizen. We take a Comprehensive View and Approach to ESG items, meaning, we look at each and every department and function of our Company to assure ourselves that we are always "doing the right thing" for our employees, our shareholders and the communities in which we operate on a daily basis.

  • A Comprehensive Approach to Minimize Our Environmental Impact

  • Air Quality

As a pure play Powder River Basin company, we operateonly in the state of Wyoming. Wyoming has some of thestrictest environmental regulations in the country, including strict air quality standards and reporting as wellas spill notification and remediation. Samson conductsquarterly air quality inspections at all field facilities, alongwith a quarterly inspection utilizing an optical gas imaging(“OGI”) instrument. Additionally, Samson has adopted thebest management practice of performing Leak Detectionand Repair (“LDAR”) in conjunction with the OGIInstrument quarterly in order to enhance detection andearly intervention of leaks. Samson also files a GreenHouse Gas ("GHG") report with the EPA annually.

    No Minimum Reporting Threshold

Samson’s incident reporting policy dictates that Operationsreports spills of any volume. Having no minimum reportingthreshold allows Samson to properly remediate anyenvironmental impact due to the spill.

    Staying Informed

Samson stays informed on industry trends and practices toensure we are operating at a best in class level in allaspects, in environmental practices in particular. Weparticipate in an annual EHS metric benchmarking surveywith the Independent Producers EHS Forum. The RY2018study included data from 37 E&P companies and includesbenchmarking results on EHS stats including OSHArecordable injury rate, lost time injury rate, spill occurrencerate, volumetric spill rate, and vehicle incident rate.

  • Waste Management

Samson contracts with some of the most reputable hazardous waste disposal services in the industry. These companies provide detailed waste manifests that enable us to ensure our waste is disposed in ways that are safe and compliant with regulations. On the rare occasion we need to dispose of contaminated soil, we contract a hydrovac or roustabout company from our preferred vendor list to transport the contaminated soil to the Republic disposal facility in Bill, WY, which is specifically approved to handle and dispose of E&P waste. This disposal facility has been audited by the Samson EHS department.

  • A Comprehensive Approach to Being a Good Partner, Neighbor and Employer

  • SafetyIndustrial Hygiene

    • Personal Gas Monitors- Samson has made significant investments in personal and fixed gas detection over the years. Since implementation of personal gas detection, employees have realized a decrease in exposure levels. Contractors are also required to utilize personal gas detection per the Hazard assessment.

    • Tank Radars- The potential for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) exposure is inherent to the Oil & Gas Industry. Historically, Lease Operators would open the tank hatches, and manually gauge the tanks in order to determine the height of product. Samson’s Automation group has installed Tank Radars, with read outs on ground level. Not only reducing the VOC exposure, but also reducing potential for Slips/ Trips/ Falls.

    • LACT Units- On high producing facilities, Samson has installed LACT Units (Lease Automatic Custody Transfer). These units not only eliminate the need for tank gauging, but also incorporate automated valves. Instead of Trucks hauling product, LACT units are connected to and automatically ship into Oil Pipelines. The results include further streamlined operations; reduced truck traffic, exposure, emissions and improvement of the overall safety of field employees.

  • Safety

Process Safety• We endeavor to operate our assets in the most economical and efficient manner. This requires continual modifications to facility design and process changes. Samson utilizes the Critical Facility Hazard Analysis Program to identify significant changes that trigger an Engineering and Operational review to ensure the facility meets Samson operational and EHS standards.

Critical Event Preparation and Management• Table Top Drills- We conduct quarterly tabletop emergency response drills with our corporate Incident Management Team (IMT) and a segment of operations (drilling, completions, production) in order to prepare for worst-case scenario events. Samson uses a third-party emergency notification system to send emergency correspondence to the appropriate employees and contractors via phone, text, and email. The IMT and Operations are sent an alert via the emergency notification system with instructions to call into a conference line at a specified time. During the call, an emergency scenario is introduced to the group, and the team talks through go-forward procedures and required notifications.

    • Manuals- Samson maintains a Samson Incident Management Plan (SIMP) that serves as an emergency response plan. It contains all the necessary Samson, contractor, and regulatory contacts along with guidance documents for each emergency type (injury/fatality, fire, release, etc.).

    • Behavior-Based Safety- Samson has invested in and implemented a program called SafeStart, a behavior-based safety program designed to train employees and contractors on the states of mind that lead to human error, and ultimately, to incidents. The program aims to teach participants to self-trigger during these states of mind and employ Critical Error Reduction Techniques (CERT). We are committed to a 3-year implementation program that includes formal training, leadership coaching, toolbox talks, development and regular meetings of both a steering committee and a leadership committee, and several mechanisms to gauge program effectiveness and knowledge retention within the employee base.

All injuries, Samson and contractor, are tracked and investigated. Samson also employs a medical case management firm as a service to our employees.

The policy provides multiple mechanisms for reporting discrimination and employees receive training annually. Additionally, Samson partner with a Private Employer Organization (“PEO”) that also maintains anti-discrimination policies and provides multiple training tools, as well as a confidential hotline that may be used by employees to report any workplace concerns. Samson treats any claims of harassment or discrimination very seriously.

Employees receive training annually.

  • Health and Wellness In the Workplace

Health & Safety- Samson maintains over 50 health and safety programs and routinely trains its employees on the requirements of those programs. We hold monthly safety meetings for all field employees. These meetings consist of training, incident review, and discussion of relevant EHS topics as they relate to ongoing or upcoming operations. In addition, all field employees complete computer-based training quarterly. Consultants teach our employees on specialized topics such as First Aid/CPR, Defensive Driving, Well Control, HAZWOPER, etc. Samson also maintains a contractor orientation video that all contract personnel must view prior to working on a Samson location. The video’s intent is to communicate Samson’s EHS expectations. In addition, Samson has a Hazard ID program in place for both Samson employees and contractors. This is an incentive program aimed at early identification and mitigation of hazards in the field.

Ergonomic efforts- Samson provides annual training on ergonomics and maintains an ergonomics program in which employees can request an ergonomic review and accommodation where appropriate.

Health and Wellness In the World

Health and wellness benefits- Samson partners with our PEO to provide comprehensive health and wellness benefits to our employees and their families. Employees have multiple plans to choose what best fits their needs and Samson contributes 87% of the premiums.

Employee’s Financial health- Samson participates in compensation and benefits surveys each year, which allows the Company access to salary and incentive data as well as trends in benefits and administration. This enables Samson to attract and retain top talent and ensures our employees are receiving compensation commensurate with the market.

Additionally, employees have the ability to contribute to a 401(k) plan sponsored by the Company’s PEO, with Samson contributing a significant match. The PEO provides state of the art on-line tools to aid employees in planning for retirement and other financial goals.

Community Involvement- Samson supports its local communities by encouraging employees to volunteer at local organizations and by sponsoring and participating in events aimed at bettering the community and its people.
