brain myth

Both halves play a role in nearly everything we do.

The two hemispheres of our brains don’t operate asON-OFF SWITCHES

Still, the two hemispheres take significantly different

approaches to guiding our

ACTIONS UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD

REACTING TO EVENTS

#4major realities

ABOUT OUR BRAIN

#1Our brains are contra-lateral.

The right hemisphere controls the left side

of the body

The left hemisphere controls the right side

of the body

#2Each side has specific function

The right hemisphere is simultaneous

The left hemisphere is sequential

#3Each side has different specialization

The right hemisphere specializes in context

The left hemisphere specializes in text

#4Our brain analyzes and synthesizes

The right hemisphere synthesizes big picture

The left hemisphere analyzes details

EMOTION WITHOUT LOGIC

LOGIC WITHOUT EMOTIONis chilly, Spock-like existence.

is a weepy, hysterical world where the clocks are never right and the buses are always late.

The two sides are designed to work together as a smooth, single, integrated whole in one entire, complete brain.“

YIN ALWAYS NEEDS YANG

Our teaching is more L-Directed than R-Directedand we need to integrate more of the R-Directed Teaching

into our curriculum and methodology

Newsflash for ALL Educators

How do we do that?Dan Pink suggests these six high-concept

high-touch senses:

Design. Story. Symphony. Empathy. Play. Meaning

1. designTeach not just function but also Design

As more students develop a design sensibility, we'll

increasingly be able to deploy design for its ultimate purpose:

changing the world.

2. storyTeach not just argument but also Story

The essence of persuasion, communication and self-

understanding has become the ability to fashion a compelling

narrative.

3. symphonyTeach not just analysis but also Symphony

Teach students to see the big picture, cross boundaries and to be able to combine disparate pieces into an arresting new

whole.

4. empathyTeach not just logic but also Empathy

Logical thinking is essential but teach students also the ability to understand what makes others tick, to forge relationships and to

care for others.

5. PlayTeach not just seriousness but also Play

There is a time to be serious but too much sobriety can be bad

for students' learning and worse for their general well being. We

all need to play.

6. MeaningTeach not just accumulation but also Meaning

We live in a materialistic world and we need to pursue more significant desires: purpose, transcendence and spiritual

fulfillment.
