ovie making on DSLRs is a trend gaining momentum across the

globe. The ease of use, portability, complete manual control and high definition shooting mode is making them a professional tool of choice. NICC is the

only college in India teaching movie making on DSLRs along with other conventional equipment. As a part of our curriculum we shot two advertisements with a Canon 550 D in natural light, one for the 550 D itself and another one for IXUS 105. What helped us immensely in executing the production of these ads in

harsh conditions of reserves of Srimangala was the portability of our entire setup.

eing a Conon Pro Centre, one of our fortes has been the field of Photography. The department of Photography has

flourished under the guidance of Dr. Rose and students have learnt the tricks of the trade to make it big in this field. We strongly believe that along with the technical details hands on experience is of prime importance. Keeping this in mind we ensure that our students get live training and field experience. In 2010 we organized excursions to Madikeri, Kushalnagar, Srirangapatna, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry and Ramnagara, which was extremely useful to hone students’ skills in various photographic verticals.

othing excites photography enthusiasts like a one day excursion. This one was to a small town of Ramanagara

about 50 Km from Bangalore where the famous blockbuster Sholay was shot. A town famous for its stark stone hills which make a rugged landscape look like a fantasy land. It was a small group of 5 photographers who braved the heat and climbed up a hill through crevices and caves to reach the top to experience one of the most scenic vistas. On our way to the other location we encountered a settlement breeding silkworms and growing cocoons to extract one of the most priceless commodities of the region - Silk. The climb was treacherous making us scale a near vertical wall of rock but once on top was worth every heartbeat skipped. A quick visit to the local folklore museum to go through Karnataka’s tribal and social history made a perfect ending to the outing before returning back to the city.

ff The Beaten Path- was the name of

the four-day photo expedition organized by NICC Canon Pro Centre on 24th March, lead by Jeevan Pathare - HOD Photography NICC, John Cosgrove - a renowned photojournalist from New Zealand, and Vino John - veteran sports photographer. A 35-seater bus, with as many excited faces, armed (to teeth) with Canon DSLRs, an impressive array of lenses, tripods, extention tubes, filters, and laptops, stirred-up some major dust in quiet Hennur Gardens and started their conquest on the lesser-known travellers’ treasures of Karnataka. Direction - Shravan Belagola, Belur, Hassan, Srirangapatna, BR Hills, Mysore - all in four days time. The daily routine was like a boot camp where everyone was expected to be ready to leave by 6 am for shoot and get the right shots in the golden hours. Once done there, it was time to download the mornings shoot, charge batteries, rest for an hour and head to the next destination to catch the evening light. During the free hours, students were guided on how to approach the subject and what kind of shots were expected. Evenings were free until the evening shots were downloaded and ten best shots for the day were chosen and processed. Then the designers kicked in to put the photographers’ work in a magazine layout to be presented at night. It was a tight schedule, but the purpose was achieved. The intention of this exercise was to look at street, architecture and lifestyle photography from a commercial approach, and print layout as the final output. Towards the end of the workshop we saw a lot

of positive changes in the approach to photography, and a renewed understanding of working towards deadlines. It was another cross platform exercise which required teamwork between photographers and designers and it was a great success, and the guidance extended by John Cosgrove and Vino John were of invaluable impact. When the team returned to Bangalore on the 27th, there was only one question on everyone’s mind - When is the next expedition scheduled for?

n November NICCians participated in a fun two-day Copywriting workshop that was

hosted by the good folks at iReboot. We wanted to know what Copywriting was all about, and how much importance it had in the Advertising Industry. Apart from the imagery, everything you read on your printed billboards situated close to your neighborhood, banners right down to your newspapers, magazines, brochures, the articles that you read on the web, and obviously the content you read on television, hear on the radio, is a product of Copywriting! Copywriting is where, you use words, creatively and effectively to sell or promote an Idea, a Business, a Brand or a Person to the public. A copywriter’s job is to primarily persuade the public to take action.“The pen is mightier than the sword”? Acquiring and sharpening a skill such as Copywriting could very well get you, your own arsenal. Luckily for us, the opportunity just fell onto our laps, and needless to say -we grabbed it.Copywriting does require a lot of work, and a fair bit of imagination paired with a whole lot of creativity. Mr. Rajeev Nair, the man who got us acquainted with this craft. He has been with the Advertising Industry for 17 years now, currently working as an Executive Creative Director at TBWA/Tequila. He also, happens to be

certified by the Edward De Bono Institute (London) to teach ‘Lateral Thinking’ and a Cannes award to boot.Day 1: He discussed how necessary it was for one to cultivate Curiosity, Empathy, Discernment and Humility in order to become a copywriter. Importance of thorough research work and changing trends in advertising were discussed. We were shown examples of some popular print ad campaigns from across the globe to illustrate the same. Since the seminar was both highly interactive and involved numerous visuals, it turned out to be real fun for all of us. At the end of the day, Mr. Nair tested our wits with a copywriting assignment. It covered objective type questions, letter writing, coming up with taglines and strategies to promote a product. Day 2: We covered other media such as Radio, and Television. He showcased some amazing examples that showcased the power of copywriting to its maximum extent. We covered Radio jingles featured on popular radio stations in the city, most of which were interesting.Overall, this workshop was highly informative, interactive and insightful!

ICCians attended a 2 day conference held by Adobe at the NIMHANS Convention Centre,

Bangalore on the 25th & 26th August 2010. The conference focused on the Adobe’s Flash Platform & Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). The first day was devoted programmers & application developers and topics such as new pixel renderers, server based approaches to deploying apps and data mining were discussed at great length. The second day of the conference had a focus on designers and topics like user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design and best practices for interaction design were touched upon. The day also showcased numerous demos including that of, wire-framing applications and the brain-computer interface. NICCians had ample opportunities to interact with professional UI designers

e do push our students to ensure their optimum performance, but at the same time

we make sure they get to relax as well. Keeping this in mind, we have been conducting Yoga classes to help them cope with academic challenges. We have experimented with a few Power Yoga sessions also - just so we don’t get too relaxed! We hope to see this group of Yoga enthusiast at NICC grow.

Celebrations - Shankranthi & PongalStudents, dressed in traditional garb, proceed to the terrace to fly kites. For many, kite flying is a first-time experience, but the seasoned kite fliers are ready to show-off their skills. A sumptuous vegetarian lunch is served in the afternoon, and those more daring, as per tradition, bite into some raw sugarcain too. Following the post lunch lull, students accompanied the setting sun with singing and a lot of dancing...A good time was had by all.

he harvest festival known as Makar-Shankranthi in most parts of India and

Pongal in Tamil Nadu auspiciously fell on the 14th January 2011. In the past couple of years, the joint celebration of these festivals has become an informal tradition at NICC. The day begins with lamp lighting. The college doorstep is decorated with an elaborate Rangoli pattern and the doorway framed by two sugarcane stalks.
