A Winter Fling by Bea Freiheiter

Where are my flakes? No not corn flakes!

Those soft fleecy white pieces

That fall from the sky.

Up from the atmosphere way up high

Mother nature covers the ground

So that her children sleep safe and sound.

What about we humans?

We are not chopped liver you know!

Here we are clamoring for snow.

Skiing, sledding, snow boarding too,

Snow ball fighting, everyone waiting to get you.

Ski racing, jumping, bob sledding for the gold.

You are never too young or too old.

You just have to be gutsy and bold.

Or

Curl up on the couch with a good book,

Watch the snow pile up.

Take a small nap, sip some hot chocolate

From your mug or cup.

Dream sweet dreams of the coming spring.

But hold on a minute, give winter a chance to have it’s fling!

DECEMBER

BIRTHDAYS

T h e L e s t e r

Thanksgiving has come and gone, Chanukah is

nearly behind us, and before we know it, we’ll

be welcoming 2014. Time sure does fly around

here! Winter is quickly approaching and it’s

time to unpack your winter gear and make the

necessary snow-removal arrangements with

Joan in the Administration office.

In December, we have a schedule packed with

many exciting activities to choose from. In cele-

bration of the last day of Chanukah, on Dec. 5th

at 7PM, the Lester Congregation will be throw-

ing a party featuring the Hester Street Troupe.

As we’ve done over the past number of years,

we’ll be hosting a group of teens at Lester on

Super Sunday, Dec. 8th and will have multiple

joint learning sessions. A full schedule of the

planned sessions can be found on page 5 of the

newsletter and I encourage you to participate.

JCHC-University classes have resumed. A full

course catalog is available at the Heller Conci-

erge desk. Two of the four sessions scheduled

this month (12/9 and 12/30) will take place at

Lester.

Like we did last month, we will have a single

building-wide December birthday celebration on

the 11th at 3PM with entertainment provided by

Ronni Aiello.

To help you ring in the New Year, on Tue. the

31st at 2:30PM we will have our annual New

Year’s eve party with the David Aaron Orches-

tra. At 8:30PM feel free to bring some snacks

new year!

Lastly, as we approach winter, I remind you to follow

basic infection-control practices and refrain from leav-

ing your apartment if you’re feeling under the weather

or have a bad cold. Also, I encourage you to use the

hand sanitizers that are mounted near each of the eleva-

tors; use them frequently so as to minimize the spread

of infection.

questions, comments, compliments and/or concerns. I

can be reached at 973-929-2747. You should also feel

*December Facts

December is the twelfth and final month of the Gregorian calendar and the first month of winter. It derives it’s name from the Latin word decem, meaning ten, as December was the tenth month of the oldest Roman calendar. The Latin name is derived from Decima, the middle Goddess. Birthstone: Turquoise Flower: Paper White Narcissus, Holly or Poinsettia

December quote:

“God gave us our memories so that we might have

roses in December” J.M. Barrie

* New Year’s Eve

History and customs: Since 1904, Times Square in New

York City has been a hot spot for New Year’s Eve cele-

brations. Originally, the owners of the square held roof-

top parties. Now the streets are flooded with people nose-

to-nose in the cold just to watch the big ball drop. The

first time the ball took the plunge was on New Year’s

Eve in 1907. Back then, the Times Square Ball was made

of iron and wood and decorated with 100 25- watt light

bulbs. Today, The lighted Ball descends 70 feet in

sixty seconds. The Ball is a geodesic sphere, twelve

feet in diameter, weighing 11,875 pounds. The Ball

is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and

lit by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs.

SEASONS OF LIFE

Meets the second Thursday of the month.

When: Thursday, September 12th

Where: Heller Card Room

Time: 3:00pm

Seasons of Life is a support group offered to all residents of Lester Senior Housing who are

experiencing a change in life.

During our previous session on 8/8/13 we discussed the difficulties experienced when ad-

justing to community living. Group members were able to offer valuable suggestions and

advice to help other group members cope with these new life changes.

I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who participated in the “Seasons of

Life” group, which began in January and concluded in November of this year. Every

resident who attended this group made it a success and I hope it benefitted those of you

who joined us. “Seasons of Life” was an open group that was held on the second Thursday

of every month. An open group is a group that allows new members to attend each ses-

sion every time it is held; this feature allowed residents to try out the group to see what it

was all about.

Beginning on January 9th 2014, I will be running a new group for the residents of

Lester Senior Housing. This new group will be called “Come Together with Heather,” it will

be held every Thursday and will run for six consecutive sessions, beginning on January 9th

and ending on February 13th. This new group will begin at 2:00pm and will be held in the

Weston Game Room. “Come Together with Heather” will be unique since it will be a

closed group. A closed group is a group that has the same members in it for all sessions,

and is not open to new members once the group has been formed. This group method al-

lows for a stronger bond between all members, since we will be seeing each other on a

weekly basis. Another special aspect about “Come Together with Heather,” is that after

the initial six sessions have been completed, the group will take a 2 week break. During

this break new members will be able to sign up for the next closed group that will begin in

March.

I invite everyone who is interested in attending “Come Together with Heather” to

sign up by Wednesday, January 8th 2014. You can sign up by calling Heather at 973-929-

2723, or feel free to stop by the office located on the 2nd Floor. Flyers for this group will be

posted around the community and will be included in your January packets. It is im-

portant to sign up in advance to ensure your spot in what is likely to be a very successful

group.

Safety

Avoid Slipping

Make sure to wear shoes with good traction and non-skid

soles. Replace a worn cane tip to make walking easier.

Take off shoes as soon as you return indoors because often

snow and ice attach to the soles and once melted, can lead

to slippery conditions inside.

Dress for Warmth

Dress in layers. Going outside? Wear warm socks, a warm

coat, hat gloves and a scarf. In very cold temperatures,

cover all exposed skin. Use a scarf to cover your mouth

and protect your lungs.
