A Wonderful Christmas Assembly

at Tenby Schools Ipoh

On Wednesday 26 November 2014, we saw Christmas

cheer here at Meru Raya campus, when all students of the

whole campus gathered at the multi-purpose hall for a

colourful Christmas Assembly.

More news and pictures on this in our next issue!

I have just returned from the final assembly of the academic and calendar

year for Sekolah Tenby. Such occasions are always happy, but also tinged

with sadness as we say goodbye to those staff and students who are

attending their last school assembly with us. We are sad, in particular, to

say goodbye to Mr. Wong Kok Ken, Puan Afiquah, Mrs Ling and Puan

Zora. They have all made a wonderful contribution to our school and we

wish them well wherever the future leads them. As you are aware we also

said goodbye to Madam Soot today; Madam Soot has been an excellent

head of Sekolah Tenby and we wish her a happy and enjoyable retirement with many

opportunities to enjoy her hobbies of sewing and reading as well a foreign travel.

We also congratulate Mr. Lee Harvey today on his appointment as Principal of a very pres-

tigious international school overseas. Lee has made an immense contribution to Tenby as

head of the International Primary School as well as Vice Principal for the whole campus. Lee

will not be leaving us just yet, but he will be greatly missed when the time comes not least for

his generous nature, keen sense of humour and concern for others. We wish Lee, Lisa,

Emily and Jack all the best as they prepare for this exciting new phase in their lives.

This evening Cohort 8 of our Sixth Form will be celebrating their graduation night at the

Tower Regency Hotel. I am sure that this will be a very pleasant evening as they reflect on a

very happy and successful two years at Tenby. Yesterday Mr. Louis travelled to Kuala

Lumpur to be with Ashley Wong and her family as Ashley was presented with her world class

certificate from Cambridge International Examinations. This was a very special day and

enjoyed by all who attended.

Wednesday morning saw our whole school Christmas Assembly at the Meru Raya Campus.

My thanks go to Mr. Hayes and his committee for putting on an excellent show both in terms

of music and a very well performed nativity play from Years 1 and 2. It was a very special

morning.

Finally, please drop in at the open day being held tomorrow at our Early Years Campus

(former IISEYC!)

Howard Bullock,

Campus Principal.

From the Campus Principal

We are really proud to introduce a new member of the

Tenby Schools Ipoh team in Miss Helen. Helen joins

us in a guidance advisor capacity and will be working

with many students and teachers right across the

campus on a part-time basis. She has already met

many students over the course of the last couple of

weeks. From January, Helen will be holding weekly

clinics for students of all ages to drop in to see her, to

allow them a chance to seek advice, to share con-

cerns, to bolster confidence and to promote well-being

on a number of different levels. She will also be sup-

porting the school teachers in delivering some profes-

sional training workshops to promote staff continuous

professional development portfolios. If there are par-

ents within the community who feel that their children

may benefit from a one to one session with Miss Hel-

en, then by all means do let me know.

Thank you very much to Mr. Ian Hayes, our Key Stage

3 Coordinator, who did a terrific job in organising the

end of term Christmas assembly. He and his team of

teachers and students did a fabulous job of making it a

very special event indeed. Although this is my 15th

year overseas, with only 2 UK Christmas’ in this time, I

still struggle to reconcile heat and humidity with the

expected cold, wet and dark UK weather at Christmas.

Nevertheless, Ian did a magnificent job, and so my

thanks to him. He even managed to get through to

Santa on his hotline, who then made a surprise

appearance – fantastic!

My thanks also to Mr. Ricky Singh, our Key Stage 4

Coordinator, who put together a series of lessons

delivered by Key Stage 5 A-Level teachers to try and

promote the increased retention of students leaving at

the end of Year 11 next May/June time. Studies have

concluded that students continuing on in their existing

schools moving internally from Key Stage 4 to Key

Stage 5 are more successful in terms of academic

performance at A-Level. We hope that our Year 11

students are already considering staying with us for

A-Levels next year. I believe that the addition of new

subjects to the A-Level curricu-

lum in September 2015 with the

likes of Travel and Tourism,

Accounting, Physical Education,

Global Perspectives to name

just some under consideration,

might be the catalyst for greater

student retention and positively promoting continuity.

There are more and more staff starting to straddle

the two Key Stages 4 and 5 than ever before, and I

will be looking to extend this even further in the com-

ing months. Our A-Level staff have been in session

since early August and so we wish them a great va-

cation, and hope they return with batteries charged

anew.

A strange and perhaps eerie reduction in noise levels

is likely to occur next week. This is because from

Friday, KBSR, KBSM and A-Level students conclude

their respective school terms. On behalf of the staff

and students of TISSI, I wish all of these students

and their respective families a safe, happy and restful

vacation. For those who will be celebrating Christ-

mas, may it be a joyous time full of blessings and

wonder as we celebrate the birth of Christ.

There a few United Nation days coming up next

week; Monday is World AIDS Day, Tuesday is Inter-

national Day for the Abolition of Slavery, Wednesday

is International Day of Persons with Disabilities and

Friday is International Volunteer Day for Economic

and Social Development. All of these days have a

core theme that we should all seek to place central to

our thinking as we enter the festive season – namely

how we all can positively contribute to the lives of

others who endure suffering, ill health, life challenges

and impoverishment. I am pleased to see the school

being more and more a part of charitable campaigns.

Charity begins at home, so I hope and pray that we

can all search our consciences to charge ourselves

with the responsibility of reaching out to people in

need.

TISSI Sixth Form – preparing for Cohort 11 January 2015 intake!

I naturally wish all of our KBSM 5 students every success as they anticipate their SPM results in a few months-

time. I would also like to remind these departing National Stream students and their parents that enrollment for

Cohort 11 - commencing in 6th Form in early January next year, is already well and truly underway. I wish to

invite these students, and indeed the wider community to come and enquire about the study programmes we

offer here at A-Level, either we me directly, or through Mr. Louis who is the 6th Form Coordinator.

Allied to the traditional subjects, students are encouraged and supported to be part of Shakespearian Drama

productions, develop their public speaking and debating skills, develop critical thinking skills, and enjoy some of

the 6th form specific dedicated CCA slots. There are also plans already in the pipeline to broaden the range of

subject from September 2015 to include Travel and Tourism, Physical Education, Accounting and Global Per-

spectives all at AS and A2 level.

I would encourage members of our Tenby community to spread the word throughout Ipoh and beyond, that the

A-level programme in Tenby Ipoh is a thriving hub of learning.

Year 7 Yellow – January 2015

Well done to all KBSR 6 students who have just received their UPSR results. I do hope that they all attained

the success they aspire to!

At TISSI, we are very proud of how the school has grown and that we currently have record numbers on roll. In

Key Stage 3 we have waiting lists in each year group and I, broadly speaking, believe this is testament just how

happy parents are with us in terms of the progress we have made and the direction in which we are heading.

We are 3 form entry in Years 8, 9 and 10 with approximately 75 students in each year. To allow us to go to 3

form entry in Year 7, we will from January be opening a 3rd class, Year 7 Yellow. Our numbers are such that if

parents within the Ipoh community do not exercise the option to sign up, then there will be limited opportunities

to do so beyond January 2015.

If you know of any parents who might like to speak with me in regards to accessing a place for their child,

please encourage them to come and speak to me, or seek admission guidance from Ms. Joey Thum from the

Admission Department, or visit our website at www.tenby.edu.my/ipoh.

We look forward to enrolling even more students onto our roll from January – but places are very limited so

spread the word!

Have a great weekend,

Neil Page.

Introducing our Guidance Advisor,

Miss Helen.

Dear parents, it is with great shock that I inform you that we do not live

in a perfect world. As parents, you only want the best for your

children! And as teachers, we only want the best for our students.

Therefore it appears we have a common goal and we should work

together to achieve this.

As educators we in the International Primary school have started to encourage and

inform parents of the things that you can do to support your child’s education,

whether it is in the form of IPC presentations or information through things such as

year group assemblies. As a Headteacher, I feel the way forward for any school is for

parents to support the teachers and for teachers to support the parents.

Now, I return to my first sentence, the world is not perfect and we are not perfect.

Therefore I would like to encourage you to come forward with suggestions on how

you feel this learning partnership can be improved and developed. I would ask that

the suggestions be constructive and not just critical.

Please e-mail me at [email protected] and I look forward to developing a

home/school partnership with you.

Lee Harvey

Message from the Head of International Primary

Christmas isn’t Christmas until it happens in your heart - this is the

essence of Christmas. Not Christmas gifts, not Christmas parties, not

even Santa Claus! Christmas is a season of peace, joy and love. It is

a time for us to share our blessings with others. I am happy that the

Christmas Assembly Committee headed by Mr. Ian Hayes has includ-

ed a fund-raiser in this year’s celebration. Many students responded

to the invitation to take part in the Non Uniform Day Program and make a donation of

RM 5 to a charitable organization, thus inspiring the joy of giving to the less privi-

leged. And many thanks for a delightful Christmas Assembly. The little ones from

international primary presented the Christmas story in a most delightful way, with 5

year-olds playing Joseph and Mary and the three Wise Men, backed up by choir of

little angels.

As the academic year draws to a close for Sekolah Tenby, I’d like to express my

heartfelt thanks to all of the national teachers for working together as a team, and

alongside the school management team. We have achieved much this year, the lat-

est being the UPSR results where we are ranked number 6 in the district (out of 112

schools). Out of the 5 subjects taken by our students, there is improvement in three

subjects, namely BM Comprehension (5.8%), BM Composition (8.5%) and Mathe-

matics (8.5%) while maintaining 100% pass in English. Well done, teachers!

Happy Holidays and a Blessed Christmas !

Dear Parents / Guardians,

This has been an extremely busy week, and in particular with our

preparation for the Open Day which is scheduled for this Saturday,

29th November 2014 from 9.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. Details of the Open

Day are in the flyer which is attached.

Parents Tea-Party - 26th November, 2014

Although there was a huge downpour, it did not hinder our parents from attending the

tea-party arranged for them. It was an afternoon where parents mingled with teach-

ers, exchanged information and received feedback regarding their child’s progress.

The evening started off with Mrs. Denise Sinclair sharing their findings on our School

Review. We were all very proud of the feedback given, as we were the first school to

receive an overall rating as good (with some satisfactory aspects) among all the Ten-

by Schools. Their thorough feedback has been useful to us and we are working on

the recommendation given, and are confident that we can move the school to a better

level in the coming months. Parents were pleased and congratulated us for the rating

received.

As all of you are aware from the previous newsletter, IISEYC is now known as Tenby

Early Years Centre, Ipoh. This change of name is to help facilitate our identity

as part of the Tenby group.

Have a good weekend!

A Friendly Visit from Ave Maria

On Monday 17th November, 2014, the choir team

from Ave Maria Primary School together with ten

teachers came to our Meru campus for a friendly

visit. The purpose of this visit was to foster strong-

er relationships between the schools. There were

performances from our very own African Drums

and Hand Chimes ensembles led by Mr. David

Chu upon their arrival and they were warmly

welcomed by our Campus Principal, Mr. Howard

Bullock, Head of Sekolah Tenby, Madam Soot,

staff and school prefects.

Thereafter, they were given a brief presentation on

Tenby Ipoh’s history, school curriculum and

facilities before being ushered on a tour of the

school. The students also had the opportunity to

observe a few classes and participated in an inter-

active dance and drama class conducted by Ms

Nikki and a graphic and technology class with Mr.

Darren. They were shy at first but showed their

enthusiasm in our school curriculum and did enjoy

themselves after slowly but surely warming up.

Before leaving our school, the choir team

performed two songs during the Secondary

break time. Their visit ended with taking of

photographs with the Head of International

Secondary, Mr. Neil Page. It was indeed a

wonderful experience for both schools and

we looked forward to their future visits again.

KBSR 6 Graduation Night - ‘Shine Like A Star’

On the 21st November of 2014, SR teachers

successfully organized the inaugural Graduation

Night event for KBSR 6 students. The theme for

the night was `Shine Like a Star’. Our Campus

Principal, Mr. Howard Bullock and Head of

IISEYC, Mrs.Puvanes, graced the occasion with

their presence. The event started off with the

opening speech by Mr. Howard. A gong was

struck as a mark of the opening ceremony by

Mr. Howard, Madam Soot and Ms. Zainap.

Mr. Howard also presented the full attendance

certificates to five SR6 students.

Dinner was served at 7.15 p.m. followed by per-

formances where the students showed their

talents in singing, dancing and playing various

musical instruments. The students also enjoyed

playing games. Prizes were given out for the

activities which were conducted before and

during the graduation night. The highlight of the

night was the presentation of a slide show

prepared by SR 6 students as a token of

appreciation to their teachers. It was a colourful

event and the students and teachers enjoyed

themselves tremendously.

Early this month ‘The Sprouter’, a social enterprise that is devoted towards posi-

tivity, innovation, service and entrepreneurship had recently organized a charity

drive to an Orang Asli village at Kampung Sinju, Simpang Pulai, Perak.

The Orang Asli village consists of 37 families with over 250 individuals living there

and more than 50 children who live within the community and who do not attend

school. The charity drive managed to raise a total of RM1500 in goods through

various organizations (including the A-Level’s led by Harry Seggu) and many

other individuals.

The aim of this charity drive was to raise awareness and to bring in volunteers to

help these children and family with basic necessities. Many volunteers came by and

donations of goods were shared from Tenby International School, Ametis Interna-

tional School, and many other non-governmental organizations. The contributions

from these organizations and individuals range from food, children chairs, books,

toys, clothes and many other basic needs.

The event brought about volunteers from all walks of life and they were able to see how these communities live

a minimalistic life. There is a huge disparity between those who live in the city and those who live in these

villages. Some of the volunteers were surprised to see that these children had not even seen a toy before and

it was their very first time to even hold a toy. The children were also given some children’s books with illustra-

tions to help them with some visual learning.

The Sprouter will be organizing a second event along with the Interact Club, the Student’s Council and the

Prefectorial Board of Tenby School to celebrate Christmas and New Year with these families. We welcome all

donations of goods in kind that could be delivered to the school’s office at any time before the 19th December,

2014.

The next event details to the orang Asli village will be on Sunday 21st December, 2014. For more information

please contact: Harry 016.3912518 or Bernie 012.5156331. (See attached for another programme by The Sprouter.)

Introduction of A Levels to IGCSE Students

Sixth Form teachers were cordially invited to

give a foretaste of their teaching styles to Year

11 students. It was a collaborative exercise

designed to familiarize our Year 11 students

with our Sixth Form teachers. The content of

the lessons was strictly within the ICGSE

curriculum and was jointly prepared by the

incumbent teachers and their A-level partners.

Although there were mixed feelings at the

outset, the project proved to be a consum-

mate success as it created new and stronger

bonds between staff members as well as with

students.

There was also a greater appreciation among

our Year 11 students of the manifold benefits

of doing their studies at our Tenby Sixth Form.

Kudos to Mr Neil Page, the architect of this

novel idea and to Mr Ricky Singh, the

“engineer” of the project. A word of special

praise to all our staff (Y11 & Sixth Form) who

did much to break what remains of the “Berlin

Wall” in our school!
