———————— Remembering those who ministered unto

the Lord and us!

Father Constantine George Capoyianes

November 14, 1892 – June 28, 1980

The Rev. Constantine Capoyianes was

born in Konstantinou, Messinia, Greece,

son of George and Efrosine Capoyianes,

and was educated there.

He married Kondelo J. Sklires on Febru-

ary 14, 1911 at Meligala, Messinia,

Greece. In 1916 he came to the United

States with his bride and settled in

Haverhill, Mass. Where he continued his

education and served as teacher and

bookkeeper of the Greek Orthodox com-

munity there.

On April 13, 1923, Constantine Capoy-

ianes was ordained Deacon in Nashua,

New Hampshire and on the following

day was ordained priest. He served his

first Easter Season in the St. Nicholas

Greek Orthodox Church of Portsmouth,

New Hampshire.

In 1936, Father Capoyianes was elevated

to the rank of Oikonomos by the then

Archbishop Athenagoras. He was serv-

ing the Holy Apostles Church of Duluth,

Minnesota at the time.

The year 1951 was marred by the pass-

ing of Presvytera Kondelo, while he as-

signed to the Holy Trinity Greek Ortho-

dox Church in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

During Father Capoyianes’ long minis-

try, he served many communities, many

of them in their infancy, it was the period

of the expanding Greek Orthodox Church

in America. The communities served by

Father Capoyianes included: Manchester,

New Hampshire (St. George); Youngs-

town, Ohio (St. Nicholas); Warren, Ohio

(St. Nicholas); Mansfield, Ohio (SS Con-

stantine and Helen); Joliet, Illinois (All

Saints); St. Louis, Missouri (Assumption);

Kalamazoo, Michigan (Annunciation);

Duluth, Minnesota (The Twelve Holy

Apostles); St. Paul, Minnesota 1940 to

1948 (St. George); Fond du Lac, Wiscon-

sin (Holy Trinity); Appleton, Wisconsin

(St. Nicholas).

Father Capoyianes was also responsible

for the establishment of the new commu-

nities founded at St. Paul, Minnesota (St.

George); Rochester, Minnesota (SS Anar-

gyroi); Madison, Wisconsin

(Assumption); and Appleton, Wisconsin

(St. Nicholas).

In 1961, Father Capoyianes went into

semi-retirement after having served

twelve years at Holy Trinity of Fond du

Lac, Wisconsin. For the next few years

Father Capoyianes substituted for vaca-

tioning priests within the Diocese when-

ever it was asked of him, he went.

In 1963, he took on the task of serving

the new community , the then Fox Cities

Orthodox Community, now the St. Nich-

olas Greek Orthodox Church of Apple-

ton, Wisconsin, serving it until failing

health forced him to retire in 1975 after

twelve years. He had been honored the

year before for a 50-year anniversary of

his ordination. The period after retiring

found him often in Church, helping the

Chanter or helping in any way he could

until deterred by ill health to reduce all

activity. Father was called by the Lord

on June 28, 1980.

Funeral Services were held in Fond du

Lac, Wisconsin at the Holy Trinity Greek

Orthodox Church, Fathers George

Tsongranis, Nikiforos Tzerdimos and

Joseph Tzougros officiating. Father

Capoyianes was then taken to St. Deme-

trios Greek Orthodox Church in Elmhust,

Illinois to lie in state. Funeral Services

were officiated by Fathers Panagiotis

Malamis, Nicholas Nikokavouras, Dean

Paliologos, Theodore Stoupis and Chris-

tos Vagias with internment at Elmwood

Cemetery, River Grove, Illinois.

Father Capoyianes was a member of the

Eastern Orthodox Clergy Fellowship of

Wisconsin and Northern Illinois and a

life member of the Fond du Lac Chamber

of Com-

merce.

Survivors

include:

three sons,

Peter C.

Capoyianes,

Fond du

Lac, Wiscon-

sin; James C.

Capoyianes,

Merrillville,

Indiana; and

George C.

Capoyianes of

Villa Park, Illinois. One daughter, Mrs.

James (Fanny) Zubulake of Brooklyn

Park, Minnesota. Eight grandchildren

and three great grandchildren.

If you have anything to add about Fr.

Capoyianes service to our parish, please

email Fr. Rick.

AHEPA Honors Long-Time

Members

On January 3, 2015 AHEPA hosted a holi-

day party for the St. George Greek Orthodox

Church community to celebrate the new year.

The party was extremely well attended and we

did our best to accommodate all that came. In

total 150 people celebrated the evening with us.

The event included great food, drinks and mu-

sic. The party also provided the opportunity for

AHEPA to recognize 5 individuals in our com-

munity and honor them with a small presenta-

tion and award recognizing their life long con-

tributions to our community. Spero Thomaidis,

Joe Weiser, Dimitri Dokos, Pendy Eliou and

Christ Kontenakos were recognized for their

life long achievements. AHEPA also recog-

nized John Lambros and Steve Zeece for

achieving the life long milestone of 90 plus

years of age and for their life long generosity to

the Church. The party was a complete success

on all counts and we were very pleased to see

many of our parish families in present. Both

adults and children enjoyed the music and

dancing after the meal. AHEPA thanks all those

who attended and we wish you all a very hap-

py, prosperous and holy New Year.

Basketball Tournament February 8th

Since the early 1950’s, St. George has been involved in the Western Re-

Tountas, Mary Ernst & Christ Kontenakos. In 1983, St. George

hosted 1000 guests at the Prom Ballroom, the largest attended

conference in tournament history. Our own James Kochiras

and James Theros helped the chefs in the Prom kitchen pre-

pare the lamb dinner!

The upcoming Basketball Tournament is being held on February 13-15 in Milwaukee,

WI. All Youth and their families are invited to attend this fun weekend. We invite all

past & present basketball players and coaches to be in church on Sunday,

February 8 to reunite and take a group photo.

Mission Statement of the Tournament: Western Region Family Basketba ll

Tournament's goal is to bring together the parishes of the Western Region in order

To the Parish of St. George's GOC,

I want to say thank you for inviting me in to your parish as the new youth minister for St. George's. It has been such a joy meet-

ing many of you over the past few weeks that I look forward to working with you and your community. Here, I thought it would

be a great idea to introduce myself so you not only get an idea of the person who will be working with your wonderful children,

but hopefully this will allow you to feel comfortable to approach me at any time.

Before being hired as the youth minister, I have attended St. Mary's Cathedral in NE Minneapolis. There, I've assisted in the

organization and participation of many youth activities with Fr. Benjamin Tucci. Some of the events that I have been directly in-

volved with include teaching 4th grade Sunday school, organizing youth activities for our family Faith Nights, working with and

managing the Altar Servers, and chaperoning and assisting in events for our SAINTS program, which is the equivalent to this

parish's GOYA. For those in college, as well as many adults in the parish, we set up a weekly Bible Study to grow in faith. I have

also been a part of St. Mary's Summer camp for over 15 years , both as camper and staff.

Early this June, I graduated from Augsburg College with a Bachelor's degree in Education as a Music specialist in Band. In

school, my primary instrument was the trumpet. Since then, I have been working as a part-time Substitute Teacher for the Spring

Lake Park school district and a part-time lead caretaker for St. Mary's OCA, which involves scheduling and managing those in-

volved in watching our parish center during various events.

It is my hope that in working with the youth in our community, we can strive to constantly build our relationshipwith Christ and

each other. I do not believe that youth ministry is solely for the growth and development of our youth, but also for the develop-

ment of all of its volunteers and parents. For this reason, I invite and encourage anyone who is interested in working with me to

build our youth program, to contact me with your interest. I would love to meet you and hear about your ideas and concerns (as

well as hopes, dreams, and fears).

For those interested in my availability, I will be around the church on Sundays during Liturgy, Coffee hour, and Sunday school.

If anyone would like to set up a time to meet, I am available by appointment. Please email me or give me a call to set up a time

that is most convenient for everyone. Thank you again for accepting me into your community and for the most warm welcome. I

look forward to getting to know everyone and growing in Christ together.

In Christ,

Nathaniel Kostick

Stewardship Thought for the Week: Bags of old, tattered bills were being returned to the United States Treasury.

A ONE DOLLAR BILL and a FIFTY DOLLAR BILL struck up a conversation…

FIFTY DOLLAR BILL: “I went to many places -- nice stores, good restaurants, clubs and exotic places.

How about you? Where have you been?”

ONE DOLLAR BILL: “All I ever did was go to church!”

FIFTY DOLLAR BILL: “What’s a church?”

Family night January 10, 2014!

Gender selection in a brave new world By John Kass—CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Jayne and Jon Cornwill, an Australian couple, re-

cently came to America with a bit of trouble.

The trouble? Boys.

They have three little boys, and three rambunctious

boys were quite enough for the Cornwills, thank you.

What the Cornwills wanted was a little girl.

But all they got were boys. And this led to what is

known in the sex selection business as profound

"gender disappointment."

"It's like mourning the death of a child you never

had," Mrs. Cornwill told British TV.

Let that one sink in for a moment, will you?

"My husband wanted a little girl that one day he

could walk down the aisle," she continued. "I wanted

a daughter so I could have that relationship ... and

our sons wanted a little sister."

So they turned to modern science, which many

believe can solve the problems of the modern age.

And they found an answer to gender disappoint-

ment:: Pre-implantation genetic screening, or genetic

gender selection.

Currently, among people who think they already

have too many boys or girls, or those who belong to

cultures that prize one sex over the other, the trouble-

some gender can be discovered through amniocen-

tesis, or now even through a blood test, and then the

"trouble" is aborted.

In some cultures, China for example, the birth rate

of boys is higher. Families often abort girls because of

the government-mandated one-child per family rule.

But genetic sex selection can do away with all that.

The Cornwills could implant a female embryo into

Jane and have that girl. And that's just what they did.

However, in Australia, pre-implantation genetic

screening remains illegal. The Australians are wor-

ried about what happens to human beings when we

use genetics to select the traits of our children.

What's next? Height, aggression, hip/waist ratio, eye

color, arm strength? IQ? Imagine the possibilities

when we order up a master race.

Happily for Jane and Jon, the procedure isn't illegal

in the U.S. Reportedly they found an American clinic

and paid $50,000 and had that girl of their dreams.

1 in 200 mothers reports a 'virgin' birth, study finds

Actually, I'm not all that interested in the pathologies

of random Australians depressed at having boys.

Boys are trouble indeed, they're messy, they get

mud everywhere, they kick soccer balls in the house

and let the dog run on the carpet with wet paws. But

my wife and I happen to like boys very much.

The thing is, whatever we'd been blessed with, we'd

be thankful.

What I am interested in is what this means to the

future of humankind. So I called someone who

would know. Dr. Leon Kass, the renowned bio-

ethicist. Kass is no relation, but years ago, I used to

tell Tribune science writers when they'd visit the

University of Chicago to say hi to my Uncle Leon.

I've admired his mind for many years, and inter-

viewed him recently on WLS-AM.

"One should say right away that no person who is

honest with themselves can be an enemy of medical

technology," said Dr. Kass. "Many of us are alive, or

our loved ones are alive, and well, thanks to aston-

ishing advances in medical science and technology.

"But these devices and techniques that are used to

heal disease and relieve suffering are pushing against

the boundaries that make us human," Dr. Kass said.

People want children, and healthy children, but med-

ical advances also allow them "to begin to (produce)

children who satisfy parental wishes and whims," Dr.

Kass said. "And this the first step along that road."

Think of it. This business of genetic sex selection

moves procreation into manufacturing. It gives par-

ents mastery over the next generation.

Proved at last: Men really are idiots

"This is the difference between the traditional under-

standing of procreation in which children are not

made, but begotten, that they are the issue of our

love and not the product of our will," Dr. Kass said.

"We don't try to produce a particular child as we

might buy a particular brand of soap. We stand in

relation to our children as recipients of a gift and

these we learn to accept as gratefully as we can."

Genetic engineering for intelligence is far away. But

he noted that ads placed in college newspapers often

seek egg and sperm donors, with height and SAT

score requirements.

Having children become products of our wills,

beings we shape in accordance with our wants and

desires is a "very, very dangerous new orientation

between parents and children."

And this is how the world changes, or ends, with a

silly Australian couple and their need to satisfy their

whims with a gender-specific child.

Humanity won't wake one morning some 50 or 100

years from now to find that we've been transformed

into something completely unrecognizable.

In the famous Kafka story, Gregor Samsa wakes

after a night of anxious dreams to find he'd been

turned into a gigantic insect. Gregor's transformation

took only a few hours, so the insect knew he'd once

been a man. He could remember it. That's fiction.

But in reality, our transformation will likely be grad-

ual, perhaps imperceptible. It won't merely be a

matter of style or different languages or dialects. We

will have forgotten the questions.
