District 5M6

March 2019 District Governor Eileen Schirer www.lions5m-6.org

The snow is falling again today! With a new record of snow fall in the month

of February 2019 – Why is it I have thoughts of a parade marching through

my head? It’s because the LCI Convention in Milan Italy has the International

Parade scheduled for July 6th. Hope you are planning to attend.

The January 2019 LION Magazine has an article about The Service Journey –

I felt it is worth sharing some of the highlights with you. Also, there are tools

available on the LCI web site that will make your journey easier. Go to:

https://lionsclubs.org/en/start-our-approach/service-journey. This ties into

the district/club goals we started this year with: Determine if the needs of

your community are being met. Start or partner in a new service project.

Invite those who are not yet Lions to join you. Consider doing a project in

each of the five Global Cause areas. Report your club service on LCI.

The Service Journey – Is an approach to living and serving well. It takes time and

planning and can lead you somewhere new where you will change lives including

your own. There are four connected actions – Learn, Discover, Act, and Celebrate.

Learn – Seek information on the needs of your community so that you can provide

more effective service.

Discover – Understand the challenges you will encounter as you plan to meet the

needs that are revealed. Consider your own strengths and resources and those of

others who you can partner with.

Act – With the proper understanding of the need and an understanding of the

resources you’re ready to take action. This is what we do best.

Celebrate – Report your Service and Tell your story. It’s not bragging because it’s

not all about you. If you share others will gain insight into what they can do to make a difference where they are.

Every journey begins with a single step.

Hello Fellow Lions of 5M6-

I just got back from District Governor Training in St. Charles, IL. It was a terrific

week of learning and fellowship. There were 730 of us DGE from all over the

world. I think we will have a great year!

One thing the DGE’s were talking about is how to know if fellow Lions would like

to be in the leadership roles. It would be most helpful if you told anyone in the

leadership when you are available to be on the cabinet and what role you would

interested it. We could help you get all the information and training so when you

are ready it would be an easy transition. There are wonderful trainings that would

help you learn about the different titles. Some are Roar College, RLLI, ALLI, ELLI

and Northern Pride. There is always Lion’s University. You can get your

Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, and PH D all for free and on own time.

Where else can you do that? Please ask anyone if you are interested! We are not

mind readers and you all have skills!

Ciao

Lions, Lioness, Leos,

I would like to bring attention to our district-wide Service Event coming up on April 15th – LIONS DAY OF SERVICE 2019.

This event is now less than 2 months away and while I know we have been advertising this date in the previous VISION

Newsletters for quite a few months now, I would feel a lot better if we could get some Lions, Lioness, Leos, and friends

committed as soon as possible to helping out that day by registering on the FMSC (Feed My Starving Children) website.

So far, the results are not very good for our district.

The Chanhassen location has registered 51 out of 240 spots

The Coon Rapids location has registered 48 out of 380 spots (2:30 time slot is for Leos and friends)

The Eagan location has registered 5 out of 240 spots

There are 4 Districts (5M2, 5M5, 5M6, and 5M7) joining together at these 3 Feed My Starving Children facilities. Our Mission

is to pack food for the malnourished children of the World – fulfilling one of our five Global Causes! Our Goal is to have

EVERY club in the 4 Districts participate in one or more shifts on that day if possible. Collaboration among LIONS, LIONESS,

LEOS, FRIENDS, AND FAMILY will make this an achievable goal! All are welcome and you can work at the location most

convenient for you. I have included directions on how to sign up on the FMSC website in this newsletter and I have also mailed

letters to your club presidents.

*3 Locations = 860 Volunteers*

If you have any questions / concerns, please contact me at 651-402-6053 or [email protected]. I will be serving as coordinator at the Eagan location that day, so I look forward to seeing those of you who come out to that location with your fellow Lions, Lioness, Leos, family members, and friends to support this effort. It can never be said enough – THANK YOU for everything you have done, are doing, and will do to better the lives of those in need in our communities and around the world.

WE SERVE together in harmony,

Lion Gina

Childhood Cancer 5M6 Lion Linda Morrison

Childhood Cancer

The MD5M Lions Children’s Cancer Foundation of Minnesota, Inc. has been formally incorporated in Minnesota and its first officers have been elected! The president is Jeannine McDonald (District 5M5), Vice President, PDG Mike Janssen (District 5M11) and Secretary/Treasurer, Tom McCarthy (5M2).

The Council of Governors at the Multiple Convention need to approve of the Foundation. This will be followed by the Foundation’s board of directors approving bylaws at the meeting at the Multiple.

Foundation Board members have been meeting with the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, the University Foundation, and the Children’s Cancer Research Fund to identify a project for the Lions Foundation to assist in funding. Watch for an exciting announcements about our fundraising program at the Multiple Convention!

There’s some frustration always in waiting for IRS to respond with approval for 501(c) (3) status, as we know this can mean a lot to gambling clubs in particular. The organizations that we have been meeting with are going to share a bridging document that gambling clubs are allowed to utilize pending this IRS approval. It will allow a club to donate to a partner organization and yet give credit to the club and Foundation for that donation. We should have that document shortly to share with our clubs in advance of the Multiple Convention.

Some Districts and clubs are also getting pumped up about do a “head shave” fundraiser at the Multiple Convention to raise money for the Childhood Cancer Foundation. We don’t have anyone yet for 5M6 – might that be you??? It could be an awesome way to kick off this new Foundation.

Funding is so critical for this newer Lions’ cause, Childhood Cancer. Funds for support services, research, and awareness are so important. The percentage of federal funds given to children’s cancer falls far short of the percentage of overall cancer patients in the United States that are children.

Meanwhile, local clubs continue to raise funds and support local families affected by childhood cancer. There are fundraisers, volunteer projects, and donations. If your club is doing any of those activities, please share ideas with us. Also if you have questions contact, Lion Linda Morrison

From the pen of Lion Lyle:

Lions All,

I wanted to bring you an update on where the eye bank legislation stands in the MN Senate and House:

1.) The Senate bill was introduced to the Senate floor on January 22, 2019 and the bill number is SF 301. This bill was authored by Senators Jerry Newton (DFL – primary author), John Hoffman (DFL) and Jim Abeler (R). The bill was assigned to the Senate committee on Health and Human Services Finance & Policy. On February 11th, two additional Senators were added to the bill as authors. They are Senators Scott Jensen (R – and a doctor) and Matt Klein (DFL). Both of these senators spoke with Dr. van Kuijk last week when he was at the state capitol as part of a contingent of physicians making the rounds visiting our elected officials. The bill is awaiting a committee hearing where it can be discussed, altered, and then voted on to either move it to another committee or back to the Senate floor for a formal vote. With 66 State Senators, we would need to have 34 votes in favor of the bill for passage. With five Senators authoring the bill, we need to convince 29 more to vote in favor for the bill to pass the full Senate.

2.) The House bill was introduced to the House floor this afternoon and the bill number is HF 1247. The bill was authored by State Representatives David Baker (R – primary author), Laurie Pryor (DFL), John Poston (R) and Kristin Robbins (R). We already have another state representative, Peggy Scott (R), who has asked to be added as a co-author and I’m attempting to recruit more. The bill was assigned to the House committee on Health and Human Services Policy. Now that the bill has been introduced, we are awaiting a scheduled committee hearing to go over the bill, make any necessary changes or additions, and then hold a vote on whether it should be moved to another committee or to the House floor for a formal vote. With 134 State Representatives, we would need to have 68 votes in favor of the bill for passage.

Dr. Van Kuijk will be visiting the state capitol again this week as a part of another group of physicians visiting our state senators and representatives. As it was last week, Dr. van Kuijk is meeting to discuss other business but will make an attempt to drum up support for our proposed legislation, if time allows. It should be noted that Dr. van Kuijk’s discussions with our elected officials regarding these eye bank bills are entirely done on his own time and he is not representing the University of Minnesota nor the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences in any official capacity. He is only speaking about this legislation as a private citizen.

I have asked our bill sponsors in both the House & Senate to inform me when the committee hearings are scheduled and I am monitoring the committee hearing schedules on the legislative website. My plan is to attend the hearings and I plan to speak on behalf of the Lions and the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation in favor of the bills. I feel there is much to be told about our request for this legislation. One thing I have been trying to emphasize with our elected officials is our foundation is not angry with LifeSource. Our foundation is disappointed in LifeSource bringing this for-profit entity know as CorneaGen to Minnesota.

We have been in discussions with LifeSource to find ways to work closer together in promoting donations by Minnesota residents. Sean has been meeting with Peter Farstad at LifeSource for several months and now we are taking the next step by including me in the meetings. Sean and I will be visiting LifeSource tomorrow and our hope is the discussion will be cordial and productive.

The big thing we need from you, your fellow Lions and our supporters is to contact your state senators and representatives. Everyone needs to ask them to support the bills in their respective chambers (SF 301 or HF 1247). Everyone needs to tell their elected officials that you support your local Lions-operated, non-profit eye bank and that you are against for-profit eye tissue sales. If you wish to secure a future for the Lions Gift of Sight, you need to get our state legislature to pass these bills!

Thank you for your attention to this lengthy, but important, e-mail!

Yours in Lionism, Lion Lyle

Fellow Lions, Lioness & Leos,

Again, on behalf of LCIF and myself I want to thank those clubs who participated in the Parade of Green at the Mid-Winter Convention in January. The overall total that has been given to LCIF since July 2018 is $44,605.64. This dollar amounts includes donations from clubs and members.

I want to encourage those clubs that have not made a donation to LCIF, please reconsider your position and make a donation. If you choose to do that please forward your checks to me for my records and I will forward your check, along with paperwork to ensure your donation is properly credited to your club.

All donations are eligible to go towards a Melvin Jones Fellow. Remember that 100% of the donation is used for Humanitarian Needs or Disasters. I would like to see District 5M6 be a District that is 100% participating.

I would also like to encourage club members to make a donation to LCIF. Any donation that a member makes goes towards that member receiving a Melvin Jones Fellow once they reach the $1,000 requirement.

Remember that there are now only two areas of giving, “LCIF Empowering Service” and Disaster Relief. Donors are encouraged to consider “LCIF Empowering Service”. “LCIF Empowering Service” covers all Vision, Youth, Hunger, Pediatric Cancer, Environment and other Humanitarian needs. If a club or member wishes their donation to go to just Disaster Relief, please note that on the memo line. Please remember that every donation to LCIF goes back to meet the needs of these programs in a communities here and around the world.

As a reminder, please send your checks directly to me, so I can see that they are processed correctly at LCIF. I will do all the necessary paper work and send them on to LCIF. This also allows me to have a record in case we have to research a check.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions on your Clubs current Melvin Jones Fellow balances or as a Lion or Lioness your personal donation totals. I’m also available to come to your Club for a presentation.

Children Benefit from Free Vision Screening at Stillwater School District

The Lion clubs of Afton/Bayport/Lakeland, Lake Elmo, North St. Paul, Scandia Marine and

Stillwater worked together with the Stillwater School District Preschools and the Early Child

Family Center two weeks in February to provide free vision screenings for young children.

250 children were screened by Lions club members which took place at each elementary

school and ECFC. Amazing coordination was given by Paula McDonald, Health Services

Supervisor and her staff with the Lions to do the screenings.

Paula McDonald said “Thank you and your team! We enjoyed working alongside you on this very important cause.

Sign us up for next school year- the first couple weeks of November 2019 would be better than snowy February.”

More than 12 million school-age children in the United States have some

form of vision problem, yet only one in three have received eye care

services before age six.1 Many vision problems run the risk of becoming

permanent if not corrected by age seven, when the eye reaches full

maturity. Vision also plays an important role in education. According to

educational experts, 80 percent of learning is visual.

• Made 5 fleece-tied blankets for children with cancer at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

• Made 25 activity bags for youth with cancer who are being cared for by Children’s Cancer Research Fund. Normally

CCRF has a volunteer available to engage the children in play, but when they don’t, activity bags are very helpful to

keep them busy and excited about something, instead of being anxious about their appointment. We made activity bags

for the two age groups that CCRF receives limited donations for:

10 activity bags for 1 ½-2 year old children

8 activity bags for 13-18 year old teen girls

7 activity bags for 13-18 year old teen boys

• Created 15 diapers from t-shirts for Global Health Ministries which uses them use to encourage women in developing

countries to seek prenatal care. They offer them as gifts if a mother visits a clinic before delivery, or chooses to deliver

her baby at a health facility.

• Collected over 14 pounds of food for the Scandia-Marine Food Shelf.

We were pleased to address several causes during the event: pediatric cancer, environment, and hunger.
